I read Stlylemakers:inside fashion. I found the book fascinating in that I never knew there are so many people and personalities involved in a fashion company and its brand. The book is one of the most informative books I have read. It is a great guide for students going to fashion schools or entering the industry. Also, it is a fun book to read!!!

This book was a gift to me from someone who knows I love fashion. But loving fashion does not automatically mean understanding the creation of fashion--as I learned from this book. The book educated me to the great complexity beyond just designing and marketing. (And I thought I knew...)
The vignettes, bio's and photographs were exciting and fun.
This is a great book for anyone who loves fashion. And a great book for anyone who wants to peer into the hip & fast world of stylists, forecasters, editors, etc. The visuals of the book are beautiful. It now sits on my coffee table--and always gets comments.

Madripoor, Mutants, Vampires, and Possessed Swords.......2005-06-22

As the title suggests, this Wolverine graphic, reprinting Wolverine #1-5, from 1988 has a bit of everything. It's set in Madripoor back when Wolverine was using his Patch disguise, and like so many other stories set in that time, it has Logan neck deep in Lowtown corruption as he bumps into and saves people he knows from his X-Men days.

The first story, reprinting #1-3 is about the Black Blade, a fabled sword created by Maramasa, a master swordsman. Any time you have a story about Samurai and fabled swords, the Silver Samurai can't be far behind and that is the case here. Not only does he appear, but Lindsay McCabe and Jessica Drew, better known as Spider Woman. The story wraps up with a slightly surprising end, and it's a good read.

The next story, covering #4-5 showcases another power struggle between Madripoor crime lords, this time General Nguyen Ngoc Coy and Tyger Tiger. Two new badguys are introduced, Roughhouse a brawler, and Bloodsport, a vampire who's very touch causes people to bleed. Karma, formerly of the New Mutants also makes an appearance. However, just as the story builds up and gets interesting, the graphic is over, and the ending never supplied.

This book could have been made much stronger had it included the next couple of books which wrap up the General Nguyen Ngoc Coy storyline.

Overall, this is very typical of Logan's days as Patch and it's worth a look as long as you're forewarned it ends in an odd spot.

My Favorite Perelman.......2007-01-29

I have read a fair amount of Perelman and although I enjoy him I find his humor a bit dated at times, while at other times he is trying to be too clever, playing word games that interfere with the overall flow of the writing. I have no such reservations about this book, whose humor is timeless, and outstanding. Anyone who has ever felt they've been done in by a contractor, or anyone who has ever tried the country life for a while will especially enjoy the book. One of the stories, about staying alone in the country house at night, caused me to break out in tears of laughter the first three times I read it.

Perelman Is Truly a Humor Writer's Writer.......1999-02-19

I scribble the occasional humor book myself (most recently, Scratching The 'Net: Web Sites for Cats) but I can only dream of one day reaching the classy comedic heights of Mr. Perelman. He had an amazing command of language, yet wrote in a style so amazingly easy to read that it goes down like a fine wine. Acres and Pains is a decent sample of his work, telling tales of his travails in Bucks County, PA, where so many of the New York literati used to maintain country homes. His run-ins with the locals, relatives and the house itself (which he named "Rising Gorge") provide one hilarious situation after another. When it comes to 20th century humor writers, Perelman is a refined cut above.

Why do so few people know SJ Perelman's work today? Is it because of the strange way his last name is spelled and thereby eluding the casual library/bookstore searcher typing in something like: "Pearlman"? Or perhaps he has simply become overshadowed by his more famous and equally witty contemporaries, Robert Benchley and Groucho Marx. (Perelman did indeed help write a few Marx Bros. movies - and he writes hilariously about those experiences). Check out Mr. Perelman's work. Sadly, this short book is just about the only collection of his material available on the market, and that's a great pity. It's not really his finest work... but at the least, it's a start. One must let S.J. take them out for a whirl.

This book is a must for anyone interested in the history of Acting in America. Hirsch gets behind the doors of the elusive Actors Studio and shows, with respect, a glimpse of what goes on there. Hirsch does a magnificent job of tracing the path of the evolution of Stanislavski's system in this country, from the arrival of the Moscow Art Theatre to the Group Theatre and finally the Actors Studio. I couldn't put this book down.

This book is a definite plus for anyone interested in the development of the method in America. Foster Hirsch gets behind the doors of the Actors Studio and does an amazing job of conveying the work of the actor from an observer's point of view. Hirsch also does a magnificent job of tracking the path of the evolution of Strasberg's method. He covers the arrival of the Moscow Art Theatre to the formation of the Group Theatre to the influence and work of the Actors Studio. I couldn't put this book down.

What a waste of time. This collection is mired in typical Jacobs'School academic-speak. The language throughout is just like I remember it at IU grad school...people using big words to make themselves seem more important. Don't buy it. 1 star.

The first novel in Gygax's Greyhawk setting is a good one. It is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a fast and fun read. The story continues in Artifact of Evil, at which point Gary and TSR parted ways. He then took his Gord the Rogue series to another publisher and come out with Sea of Death, Come Endless Darkness and Dance of Demons. There is also a collection of short stories. TSR has published other Greyhawk novels, but none have been as good or fun as the Gord the Rogue series.

Yes I have kept the book for over 10 years I lost it at about 18 and re-ordered it at about 28 - I wont lost it again.
True to the spirit of D&D, the most fun part is going from "level 0" to "level 1" and finally reaches the "named" level - which is exactly what happens in the book.

My favorite book EVER!.......2004-10-01

I had a friend give me this book to read when I was 13 and read it atleast 5 times before I gave it back to him. I asked him years later when he was home on a visit from the navy and he said sorry man my mom thru all my old books away. Can you believe that?? Anyway, I finally have found it again at age 32 and let me tell its even better then I thought! I was concerned maybe I outgrew it or something but no way as Gary Gygax is an absolute genius and it shows most I think in his books. I also want to point out there are several more books to this series all of which are great.

I am a slow reader, It takes me 2 months plus to finish novels but I read this book in 3 days!! I could not put it down. The characters are so endearing, the novel is filled with sweet poetic justice. I was a big fan of the Greyhawk Campaign but the Gygax novel really brought it to life! If you enjoyed Greyhawk in the least bit you'll be cheating yourself if you don't read this series. Gygax is such a creative mind!!! I don't think he gets all the credit he deserves.

Many movies have been made on lesser books than this one.Its simply a fun and entertaining book to read.I love how Gygax mixes the actions/events taken place with gords inner thoughts and feelings.Not to mention the brilliant interplay of characters that gord meets through his travels.Gygax mixes just the right amount of character depth with the characters roll in the story - theres nothing worse than reading page after page about a characters own past then he/her character disappear from the pages.

One of the most popular features of the book has always been its focus on the "Manager as a Person," which discusses managers as real people with their own personalities, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and problems. In the 4th Edition, the authors expand on this theme by discussing the importance of management competencies- the specific set of skills, abilities, and experiences that gives one manager the ability to perform at a higher level than another in a specific context. The themes of diversity, ethics, and information technology have also been greatly expanded in the 4th Edition through chapters dedicated to each of these topics as well as in-text examples, photographs, "unboxed" stories, and the end-of-chapter material- all areas of importance that truly serve to bring to life the workplace realities that today’s student will encounter in the course of a career.

Shipped Slowly.......2007-03-09

I was told there was over night shipping on this book which I requested. When it did not show up the next day I checked with the shipping company and they said it was sent 2nd day air. I phone Amazon and they confirmed there was no over night shipping. If I knew there was no over night shipping from Amazon I would have purchased it from another source because I needed it the next day.

Good but expensive........2007-02-16

I used this text while teaching an Introduction to Management class to undergraduates at SUNY. It is comprehensive, well produced, up-to-date and has a lot of engaging real world examples. However, it's very expensive.

Strengths:

- Business Week excerpts at the end of each chapter allow students to examine real companies and real managers
- Case problems are pitched at the right level - short, but with enough content to make the students think
- DVD has some excellent content, especially on the entrepreneurship chapter. Many "Hot Seat" segments depict provocative scenarios such as sexual harassment that engage students and stimulate discussion.
- Case materials are integrated into the text instead of being presented in "boxes" that disturb the chapter flow.
- Good material on women in management.
- Well produced
- Comprehensive: the only material I added was on problem-solving and analysis skills, and some extra depth in business strategy.

Could be better:

- The book lumps business strategy under "planning", which understates its importance. The boring material on business planning gets more space than the interesting topic of competitive strategy. The business strategy material focuses on SWOT analysis and (briefly) Porter's Five Forces model. I would have liked to see some material on the resource-based view - such as core competencies - which is intuitive enough for undergraduates.
- The online test material is mostly multiple choice/ fill in the missing word, and in my view tests facts more than management concepts. I found this entirely inadequate and used none of it. I ended up writing a lot of short answer questions.
- The authors use a strange selection of tools in the section on psychology. There is no mention of Myers-Briggs or Belbin, which are widely used in the real business world.
- The text is very expensive. I felt guilty asking some students to pay this much.

Good 'nuff.......2006-10-13

Used this book for a class. It is well organized and has plenty of thought-provoking exercizes. It presented ethics and morals as fluctuating things, based on the times and location - I don't agree with that stand. However, the book was good. The online material is awsome - good chapter notes, practice tests, and glossary.

Contemporary Management 4th Edition .......2005-09-29

The book was in very good condition and arrived just in time before classes began. Shipping was fast and the book was exactly what I needed.
