Book Description
Boris Vallejo’s exotic, sensual imagination has long placed him in the first rank of “heroic fantasy” illustrators. Here are 28 of his most dramatic paintings, each so intensely powerful it seems like a dream—or nightmare—come to life. Among the included works: Egyptian Warrior, a vision in bronze; Tattoo, where the dragon etched into a power-fully strong and veined arm morphs into the real thing; and Discus Thrower, which shows a silvery, robotic man in outer space.

Red, AKA Ash, takes on Pokemon Kidnappers.......2007-06-23
This was the first Manga I'd ever bought for my 8 year old child. It was inexpensive when I bought it (has gone up considerably now) and I was worried it wouldn't be one of the most compelling. Have no fear, Snorlax is a gas! The book is divided into chapter including a kidnapping from a Pokemon fan club and a race. It was a huge hit with my child, and I found my introduction to the world of Manga compelling as well. The adventures are less preachy and more compelling than those in the novels, though perhaps not as good as a chapter book for developing reading skills. It makes a nice change for me to read this with him at bedtime, but I do get tired of reading the action and Pokemon sound effects. Warning to Pokemon neophytes...check out the Wikipedia explanation for Pokemon Manga before embarking on these "Adventure" stories. The characters have different names and histories in these original black and white comics.
Trouble on board.........2003-06-15
This Pokemon manga, called Pokemon Adventures, is drawn out more like the Pokemon RPG videogame. In this issue, the Pokemon Fan Club sends Red on a mission to free some Pokemon from a ship called the S.S. Anne. Unfortunately for Red, the person responsible for all this is actually Lt. Surge, the Gym Leader of Vermillion City. Getting past his Electabuzz won't be so easy. Also, Red enters a race, which leads him into many comical hijinks, including a run-in with Snorlax, one of the largest Pokemon that ever existed. If you liked the Pokemon game, or liked the anime but didn't like Ash, you should get this manga, especially since it's at such a [good] price.
Excellent Series.......2001-07-14
This series is the best of any pokemon series because the hero is not a dork. he actually trains and captures pokemon that are very strong. if you are a fan of pokemon this series is for you!!!

Book Description
Long before Puccini wrote his masterpiece, the tale of the poor Japanese girl abandoned by her foreign lover had been taken up by numerous Western writers as part of the wave of Japonisme in late-19th-century Europe. But was there a "real" Madame Butterfly? Following the tragic trail back to its roots in Nagasaki, Jan van Rij believes he's found the answer. Opera lovers will delight in the revelation, and learn not only about the cultural forces and personal fixations that inspired this popular work but why many Japanese remain unconvinced.
A long-time opera buff,
Jan van Rij served as an E.U. diplomat in Japan, highly regarded for his intimate understanding of Japanese-European relations.
Customer Reviews:
informative, comprehensive easy to read........2007-01-19
This book is based on extensive and thorough research. It's analytical, yet not dry. I got much more out of seeing the opera on stage after reading this book. This book helped me a lot writing my college paper.
Kami Sarudahiko.......2005-06-29
We were interested in seeing how historically accurate Puccini's opera, Madama Butterfly was, so we purchased Van Rij's book. However, in his section entitled "How Japanese is it" he speculates that "Surandasico" might be a garbled reading of "zurugashikoi" meaning cunning, an adjective. First of all, he misspelled "sarundasico" as it occurs in the opera librtetto and somehow never discovered that there is a Shinto kami named "sarudahiko" which we found via Google. If this one detail is so far off, how can the rest of the book be much better?
Additionally his assessment of the character, Butterfly, is unbelievably dismissive. It should not take a great deal of imagination to figure out why she would want to marry an American, considering her station and the lack of true and binding marriage rights for women of her station in Japan at that time. Nevertheless, the other parts of the book were interesting and the photographs from the Meiji Restoration Period were helpful in our research.

Mme. Butterfly Story Marred By Omissions & Errors.......2002-10-16
The book is a very interesting study of the whole Mme. Butterfly story written by a highly educated career diplomat who, like many of his profession, had a lot of the free time necessary to pursue his pet research topic. As an opera buff and linguist the author is able to gain many interesting insights into the Butterfly story. For example, he approaches the opera from the angles of Pierre Loti and Siebold and examines the phenomenon of Japonisme which swept 19th century Europe. Unfortunately, despite the author's meticulous research, the book is marred by spelling inconsistencies (for instance, the personal name and honorific O-Kiku is rendered correctly but Oine (sic) is not). The book also suffers from not having made full use of Japanese sources (including a book written by a descendant) as the author does not read or speak Japanese (this last point was confirmed by the author himself).
Who was the Real Madame Butterfly? A Fascinating Study.......2001-03-28
If you've ever seen Miss Saigon on Broadway, David Henry Hwang's postmodern play, M. Butterfly, or Puccini's original opera, Madame Butterfly, you'll love this book. This is a fascinating, thorough re-telling of the Madame Butterfly story... answering the age-old question, "Was there a real Madame Butterfly who inspired Puccini's opera?" A meticulous, nonfiction detective story of a book, the author goes back to Puccini's earliest historical and cultural sources, debunking old myths and identifying earlier incarnations of the story, and discovers the tragic, real-life love story behind the opera. A great read for any opera buff or anyone who's interested in Japanese culture! Great photos, too. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Not What I Expected.......2007-01-17
I learned of the subject matter through my brother, who advised me that I "had to" learn about this information. I went to Amazon to buy the book, admittedly not scanning the reviews first. Big mistake. This book involves a behind the scenes at the "making of" the documentary film. It does not discuss with any great detail the issues or criticisms of Walmart, which is what I was really looking to know. As anxious as I was to receive and read the book, I am disappointed now. If anyone is interested in these issues, it would be my advice to get and watch the film---do not buy this book.
The making of the film - with unlimited access to the filmmakers.......2006-03-18
This companion to Robert Greenwald's documentary WAL-MART: THE HIGH COST OF LOW PRICE provides a behind-the-scenes focus on both the making of the film and the grass-roots pressure campaign challenging the world's biggest business. Greenwald and his crew went on a nine-month underground investigation kept secret from Wal-Mart as they put together their film: Spotts received unlimited access to the filmmakers and reveals their tactics, objectives, and how political filmmaking is changing businesses and the film world alike. It's hard to easily categorize this book - it could just as easily have been featured in our film column - but businesses shouldn't miss the discussion of the film methods and focus, which hold wide-reaching implications for future political film surveys of business inner circles.
Fantastic Insider's Look at the Top Doc of 2005.......2005-12-24
Wow - what a great window into the new docs that seem to be springing up like mushrooms in response to the political and social issues of the day. Along with Michael Moore, there's no doubt that Robert Greenwald is the leading director in the genre and this book provides a fascinating insider's account of his process, both on the making of the film and the making of the grass roots campaign promoting it and the larger effort to push Wal-Mart to change its business practices. Top Marks - Highly Recommended!
The Wrong Book.......2005-12-18
Usually, when a book is published to coincide with the release of a documentary film, the book contains details and information that serve to flesh out the synoptic look that the documentary format provides. If you're looking for that sort of book here, I'm sorry, my friend. This is the wrong book.
Instead of looking at the information stored in the movie, this is a making-of document. It goes point-by-point through initial research and primary shooting up to about halfway through post-production. Also there are little pointers interspersed through the film on how to make politically motivated documentaries, in case the reader wants to be the Cecil B. DeMille of political harangues.
I'm sure there are people who are interested in the internal controversies that accompanied designing the poster for this film. I'm sure some people are interested on why one of the principal interviews, with a former Wal-Mart manager, takes place in a car and looks so incredibly cramped. But that's not why I bought this book, and that's probably not why you're considering it. This is E! True Hollywood Story stuff, not the content of a companion volume for a political diatribe.
Where this should be a book of hard facts that can be used in arguments against the continued invasion of the Wal-Martians, instead we get backlot gossip and pelf. Perhaps another book is in the offing in the near future, containing a more detailed look at the information in the movie. In the meantime, unless you hope to be a documentarian yourself, save your money. This isn't the book for which you're looking.
Book Description
The largest company in the world by far, Wal-Mart takes in revenues in excess of $280 billion, employs 1.4 million American workers, and controls a large share of the business done by almost every U.S. consumer-product company. More than 138 million shoppers visit one of its 5,300 stores each week. But Wal-Mart’s “everyday low prices” come at a tremendous cost to workers, suppliers, competitors, and consumers.
The Bully of Bentonville exposes the zealous, secretive, small-town mentality that rules Wal-Mart and chronicles its far-reaching consequences. In a gripping, richly textured narrative, Anthony Bianco shows how Wal-Mart has driven down retail wages throughout the country, how their substandard pay and meager health-care policy and anti-union mentality have led to a large scales exploitation of workers, why their aggressive expansion inevitably puts locally owned stores out of business, and how their pricing policies have forced suppliers to outsource work and move thousands of jobs overseas.
Based on interviews with Wal-Mart employees, managers, executives, competitors, suppliers, customers, and community leaders, The Bully of Bentonville brings the truths about Wal-Mart into sharp focus.
