Book Description
The coinage of the Indian Sultanates is a very important primary source for helping us understand the political and economic history of much of what is now India, Pakistan and Bangladesh from the beginning of the thirteenth century AD until the seventeenth century when the last of the sultanates was absorbed into the Mughal empire. The right of sikka, i.e., the right to strike coins, was one of the two jurdically recognised expressions of the right of the ruler to sovereignty, and it was a right that was jealously guarded.

Best catalog for this series.......2006-11-14
As a comprehensive catalog of the coins of the various Indian sultanates, this work not only supersedes the separate museum catalogs and other specialized works on Delhi, Gujarat, Bengal and so on, it also far surpasses the earlier "comprehensive" catalog by Dilip Rajgor. The end of the book includes a Rajgor conversion table in case your collection is catalogued using his numbers. Inscriptions are given in Romanized transliteration, but are not translated. Almost every type is photographed. This will be the standard reference for quite some time.
Book Description
R. Crumb's illustrations have appeared on the covers of albums by Big Brother and the Holding Company, on bootlegged T-shirts, and in several underground newspapers. He is, however, first and foremost, known as the father of underground comics and for work that paved the way for both satirical comics and autobiographical work in the comics medium.
He has been compared favorably to Brueghel, demonized as a misogynist, defended by feminists, and lionized as the subject of Crumb, an award-winning documentary film. Having created such iconic characters as Mr. Natural, Fritz the Cat, and even himself as part of his cartoon universe, R. Crumb (b. 1943) is firmly established as one of the most significant, controversial, and technically gifted cartoonists of the second half of the twentieth century.
R. Crumb: Conversations collects interviews that span the late 1960s to the beginning of the twenty-first century. In these Crumb proves to be iconoclastic, opinionated, and---despite his celebrity---impervious to the commercial moods of the public.
Crumb appears alternately as neurotic, witty, acerbic, gentlemanly, cruel, verbose, and reticent. His persona in comics form (as an unattractive, continually nervous, lecherous, obsessive man) is both confirmed and challenged by the person who emerges from these interviews.
Gathered here are interviews and profiles that span the various periods and events in his life and work, including his early days as a countercultural figure in San Francisco, his verging on a nervous breakdown after the release of the X-rated Fritz the Cat, his editing the groundbreaking comics anthology Weirdo, his move to France in the 1990s, and the resurgence of his popularity when Crumb was released.

You can learn so much from Conversations.......2005-09-01
Poor ol' Robert Crumb, reluctantly labeled father of the underground comic movement has moved to France with his lovely, comely and protectant wife.
These conversations help the reader get into Crumb's head. They give an autobiographical and historical perspective of Crumb, from his harsh family atmosphere to when he escaped from a greeting card company to find the summer of love in California.
Many have been offended by what he has produced. He is an artist and as an artist he does what he is supposed to do; make you look at the (our) world in a different way.
These conversations give the reader the opportunity to be an auteur into the artistic psyche. Whether you believe Crumb is an artist or not, he was there; he saw, he came (in more ways than one) and he went away. It's a fascinating read and brings you closer to him. (It is impossible to meet him. Don't bother him in France and he no longer does any tours/talks-too busy drawing!)
It is worth it to have reviewed or be familiar with some of his comic work if you have not done so already. (Where have you been?) There are many sources on the Internet as well as published to accomplish this.
These conversations begin in the 60's and break into the 21st Century. I look forward to the next conversations, if he allows them.
An excellent gathering of interviews and profiles .......2005-01-06
Fans of underground comix art who wish for insights into the counterculture artist and innovator R. Crumb, whose illustrations have received wide distribution both in his own collections and on the faces of records, newspapers, and t-shirts, will find R. Crumb Conversations an excellent gathering of interviews and profiles covering various periods of Crumb's life and works. Comic art jokes, interactions with publishers and the public, and Crumb's influence on the underground comic art world are all revealed in the course of some excellent surveys.
Explains comix with old blues.......2004-11-08
Freudians should read this book. Crumb has a very modern set of aversions. Instead of doing a pamphlet for Planned Parenthood, he says, "But it's political. I don't know how I feel about all that. It's all so complicated." (p. 68). The topics discussed in this book cover the psychic interior, and the corporate entities have subtle names, as in, "Nevertheless, Last Gasp has gone on to become the second largest underground publisher in the country." [back in 1974, when eight hundred dollars covered printing costs for an underground title] (p. 93). R. CRUMB CONVERSATIONS (2004) has an index (which only has boldface listings for 6 pages showing cartoon characters, and it should've had boldface for Lenore Goldberg on p. 193 and Crumb as character on p. 198) on pages 233-244, and the Chronology on pages xiii-xxii includes such great years as 1993:
"Crumb illustrates INTRODUCING KAFKA. Summer: The last issue of WEIRDO (No. 28) is edited by Aline. June: THE COMPLETE DIRTY LAUNDRY COMICS is published. R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK, May 1987 to April 1991 is published. Fall: A Crumb wall calendar for 1994 is published. November: R. Crumb Retrospective is shown at Alexander Gallery, New York City. Kitchen Sink issues a Mr. Natural squeeze doll."
Four pages in the index are devoted to Crumb's views and works. For example, on page 235 you can find:
on Fritz the Cat, 120, 212-13; on Fritz the Cat (movie), 12-13, 28, 57-61, 174;
But anyone who is in the part of the index devoted to Crumb's works will notice that Works on page 236 begins with THE ADVENTURES OF FRITZ THE CAT (Cavalier), xvi; and includes eight lines of listings of other Fritz the Cat characters in the second column on page 237, up to "Fritz the Cat Superstar," 174, 213.
Crumb has problems he feels because of his being a celebrity as a result of the documentary movie that was made about his life. `When people asked me if I liked it, I said, "It's a good movie. It completely ruined my life, but it's a good movie!" (Laughs).' (p. 218). I usually feel that Crumb is being most honest when he says things that correspond to my feelings, but my situation has more concerns about sexual harassment in the workplace. Comics is work that takes a tremendous amount of time and energy. I used to subscribe to "Funny Times Magazine" (if you get a subscription and die laughing, it might be my fault, but it's not likely) and see what the more politically observant cartoonists were producing, but I was usually too tired to read each issue. R. CRUMB CONVERSATIONS is more like reading a book. With 18 major selections, mostly interviews, originally published in 1968, 1972, 1974, 1978, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1998, 1999, and 2003 (with an illustration from 1971 on page 11, from 1970 on p. 19, from 1967 "I wish somebody would tell me what `Diddy-Wah-Diddy' means..." on p. 22, from 1968 on p. 25, from 1959 on p. 30, from 1961 on p. 31, from 1972 on p. 32, from 1965 on p. 43, from 1963 on p. 45, a greeting card "I got a German shepherd" from 1967 on p. 46, "Keep on Truckin'..." from 1967 (the hit song "Truckin" by the Grateful Dead was years later, but the idea came from an old blues song) on p. 70, from 1967 on p.86, Whiteman on p. 89, from 1970 on p. 110, from 1985 on p. 124 and p. 139, from 1987 on p. 145, from 1971 on p. 153, from 1967 on p. 173, from 1970 on p. 192, from 1969 on p. 193, from 1982 on p. 198, from 1981 "Excerpts from Boswell's London Journal, 1762-1763," on p. 207, and from 2002 on p. 228), the book does not explain that "Diddie Wah Diddie" was an old song until the final interview conducted by mail in April, 2002.
`I don't spend nearly as much time dwelling on items that I "must have" for my collection as I used to. That said, I recently found an old collector willing to sell me an old bunch of fabulous and rare old 1920s blues records, stuff I've been trying to find for decades, such as Blind Blake's "Diddie Wah Diddie" and Memphis Minnie's "Cherry Ball Blues." They're not cheap, but not top dollar either.' (p. 226).
It is easy to find Academy Awards twice in the index, but only because of the Chronology for 1991 "April: Crumb's account of his attendance at the previous year's Oscar ceremony is published in `Premiere' magazine." And for 1994 "September: CRUMB, Terry Zwigoff's documentary about his longtime friend, premieres at the Toronto Film Festival and goes on to become a hit. Controversially, it is not nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary." About his participation in the movie starring his character, Fritz the Cat, he said, "Me and him [Ralph Bakshi] and my wife went out to lunch. After that I said: I'm going to do something, I'll see you later. And I just skipped and didn't come back for a week. I left him with my wife--it was really a bad mistake. He talked her into signing the contract. I never signed anything. I can't blame her, she had my power of attorney." (pp. 105-06). Crumb is not as rich as he deserves to be.
Robert: They gave me ten thousand dollars.
Al: You haven't got any royalty checks or anything?
Robert: Nah. Ten thousand dollars is what I've gotten from them. You know, I ain't poor. I'm probably upper middle class compared to most people I know.
Al: All these products that have been coming out with Mr. Natural on them and Keep on Truckin', that's really pirate stuff.
Robert: Most of it is. (pp. 69-71).
Back in 1972, it was the most famous cartoonist who was getting the most money. "Charles Schulz has the highest salary of anybody in the world." (p. 71).

Book Description
This out-of-sequence first volume in Hans Ulrich Obrist's Conversation Series is devoted to the influential cult comics artist, Robert Crumb-creator of Fritz the Cat, Zap Comics and Mr. Natural, among many other iconic underground mainstays. Both Obrist and Crumb are great conversationalists, and here they make a great match:Obrist: Could you tell me a little bit about how you feel about America and world politics right now?Crumb: Well, when I was young I really believed in the revolution. I don't really believe in revolution any more; I'm too old now. I think that any violent over-turning of a government or society causes a reaction that is bad or worse than the thing that they were revolting against to begin with... In the early 1970s I believed in that whole thing. I had basically left-wing sympathies but, I don't know, as someone said about communism: great idea, wrong species!

Tears of laughter.......2005-10-27
I am 39 and I thought that at my age I was far too mature to enjoy juvenile political satire. How wrong I was. I started reading this book in the bookstore, and was pleased to find myself laughing and snickering uncontrollably. Sure many of the attacks are unfair and the situation exaggerated, but what else do you expect from a satire? It was still extremely well done and extremely funny. I am outside the U.S. and find it refreshing evidence of a vigorous political struggle going on within the world's superpower; and great to see some American humour which I can relate to, and which can make me laugh.
Funny and perceptive.......2005-06-13
This book is not only funny but a worryingly accurate portrayal of how those of us who live outside of America and her subversively censored media see your country's immediate future. Those reviewers who believe there are many facts that are `out-right lies' are unfortunately exactly the ones who are being attacked by this book. Yes there are exaggerations but please for the sake of every human being - think for yourselves, and don't be the sheep this book seeks to parody.
A lucid, hilarious view of modern-day politics.......2004-07-09
Very rarely does a novel capture/skewer the essence of contemporary American politics with the unabashed hilarity and intelligence that Citizen You! does. Between this novel and Fahrenheit 9/11, I finally feel that I can make an informed decision come November.
Simply put, today's America NEEDS Citizen You!

An interesting read.......2004-07-08
As a fan of the Onion I decided to check this book out. While not what I expected there are some great things here. It would've been easy for the authors to simply satirize the current administration, but they've done some serious research. Hidden beneath the jokes is some scary factual information (most sources are in the back of the book). Don't miss the bit about Rumsfeld and Aspartame (better known as Nutra Sweet). Also surprising is the 9/11 section. Instead of jokes, it contains around 80 questions that have yet to be answered about the 9/11 attacks. The sources are all there, so you can follow the trail that sparked the questions yourself if you doubt the authors.

MORE THAN A BIT OF BETTE..........2003-06-01
As a big Bette Davis fan, I looked forward to reading this biography of her, particularly as it had been written by an individual who had also been a film critic. I was not disappointed. This is a very well researched, extensive book of the life of Bette Davis, her relationships, and her body of work. The author takes the reader through her early beginnings in Lowell, Massachusetts to her last breath in Paris, France. It is evident that for the author this was a labor of love.
Given the author's own connection to the film world, as well as the fact that he, himself, is a big fan of Ms. Davis, much of his writing is peppered with interesting insider information. It is the culmination of an amazing forty three years of research. Being a member of the cognoscenti, the author provides a great deal of colorful background that fleshes out her life, grounding it in the context of the time in which she lived and developed as the great star that she eventually became. He does this through extensive interviews of the people who had played a role in her life, news clippings, film reviews, and his own interviews of Ms. Davis.
The author takes the reader through her relationships, many of which were rocky, with her family, her fellow actors, directors, writers, producers, and studio heads. The author discusses her marriages, of which there were a four, and her lovers. It is, however, when discussing her films, her highs and her lows, that the author's knowledge really comes to the forefront. Having seen most of the films of which he writes, I especially enjoyed and was totally fascinated by all the background information, skullduggery, and behind the scenes hoopla that went on in the making of these films. I will definitely go back and see some of these films again, as they are now couched in a new light.
This fascinating book is, without a doubt, the definitive biography of Bette Davis, warts and all. The author succeeds in painting a three dimensional portrait of a feisty, determined woman, who brooked no nonsense when it came to her craft, but who also had a softer side, wanting to love and be loved. This is a woman who asserted herself and refused to countenance anyone who would try to make her be something that she wasn't. While this may not have made her very popular with those who lived or worked with her, this quality shone through in her films, making her one of the most popular and enduring superstars of all time. Bette Davis eventually became more than the sum of her parts. She became a legend.
A difficult read.......2002-05-06
I bought this book several years ago, and only just got around to reading it. I am a big fan of Bette Davis' and have read her autobiographies. I was dissapointed by this book. The writing isn't great, and the author goes into the lives and other movies of other actors and actresses too much. He goes movie by movie, and it does get tedious after awhile. While it is nice to read the behind the scenes info of each movie she was in, exhaustively going through each and every movie gets old.
I would have liked to have known more about her life with each husband, and with her sister, mom, and children. But the author seems to focus more on the films, rather than her personal life.
If you want to know about Bette Davis, best to read the books she wrote herself.
Good reading for Bette Davis fans.......2000-07-12
As an avid fan of Bette Davis, I was really excited to get my hands on a copy of this book because I'd been told it was one of the best biographies about her. The author (himself a film critic) takes you through her life, step by step, taking time to focus on the films (good and bad), the men, and the events that defined her career. From her outstanding performance as Mildred in Of Human Bondage to her slightly campy double role in Dead Ringer, the author covers them all. The book is impressive in the amount of research and personal interviews the author conducted with former co-stars and other Hollywood notables that helped frame this book. Bette had no shortage or enemies or admirers, that's for sure! Before I read this book, I always believed that Bette and her mother Ruthie were very close because that was merely the nature of their relationship; in reality, Ruthie was one of Bette's many hangers-on. I'd expected to hear more about Bette and B.D.'s relationship - or lack thereof - but it wasn't there. Bette cut her only natural child out of her will, and it was even mentioned that B.D. would have been prevented from attending the funeral (she wasn't going anyway). It would've merely added to the book to have heard more about B.D., but the author devotes only a few passages to her. This book represents a total of 43 years of researching, interviewing, and writing, and the author makes it clear how much admiration he has for Bette, as he frequently uses the first person and interjects his feelings about a film or an event. Bette Davis was a fireball on and off screen, and this book does good justice in illustrating that. Because of the author's comments about some of Bette's lesser-known films, I will be heading out to the video store in search of more Bette. Great book.

Great Musical- Great Book- Few Songs........2001-05-05
Although 'Closer Than Ever' is one of my favorite Broadway revues, and all the sheet music in this book is very good, there aren't that many songs included. The songs are: Miss Byrd, One Of The Good Guys, Life Story, If I Sing, Back On Base, and Closer Than Ever. 'If I Sing' is an amazing piece. That alone is worth the price of the book. However, I would've given the book a fifth star if it had included more songs from the show. Such as... You Want To Be My Friend?, What Am I Doin'?, Three Friends, Another Wedding Song, or Father of Fathers. As I said, 'If I Sing' is absolutely amazing. If you have a tenor range and are interested in singing 'If I Sing', buy this book. If you want a taste of some great sheet music from an impressive revue musical, buy this book. But if you want to have a more complete collection from 'Closer Than Ever', buy the vocal score instead.

Book Description
High rollers need not consult this guide for beginning gamblers and seasoned players of video poker who aim to prolong the enjoyment and minimize the risk in playing one of the most popular casino games. A sensible, responsible system for playing is presented in detail so that players can apply the techniques to any of the flashing and spinning variations of the game. Games such as jacks or better, four of a kind, double down, deuces wild, and sneak peak are featured with step-by-step instructions. Advice on identifying poker machines with more liberal payouts is also included.

Now I Love Playing Video Poker!.......2004-09-01
I always had a good time at the Poker machines; but in the past not only have I NOT won, I've never been able to make my budgeted funds last as long as I'd like them to. What fun it was to take Carol's tips to the casino and try them out. Not only did I play longer, I took home all of my money, and some of "theirs" too. Even if that might not happen every single time, these new techniques just make the trips to the casino a lot more fun. Woo-hoo!
Great System.......2004-08-28
Costa's system really works. After reading this book, I went to the casino, tried it out and came home a winner. In addition, the book was easy to read and very entertaining. I highly recommend it!!
Practical, but Simple Advice.......2004-05-19
If you've NEVER played video poker, this is a great starting place for tips and very basic strategy. Some of the statements the author makes are along the lines of; "I've heard that machines can be programmed to give better hands to lower bets." These make for interesting anecdotes, but not much in terms of substance. However, the author provides good information for introductory strategy that will definitely save the novice player money. In a book of this nature, I think it is essential that there be information on which machines are statistically full-pay machines and which are not. For instance, if a jacks or better machine pays 9 to 1 for a full house and 6 to 1 for a flush, perfect play over the long run will yield close to full paybacks, while a machine that pays 8 and 5 to 1 respectively, is only a 94% payback machine. This information is critical if you want to play for very long, but isn't found in this book.
Money winning tips.......2004-03-16
I have read Ms. Costa's new video poker book and found it quite interesting. After reading her tips and tricks on playing video poker, I thought why not give it a shot. I live in Las Vegas so what better place to try it out. I must say I was optimistic when she described some of the little tricks other avid gamblers do especially when it came to holding three cards for about 30 seconds and the majority of the time the fourth one will come up. I can't tell you how many times I have tried this tip and actually got the fourth card. This is amazing and especially helpful when you get those four aces with a kicker. I have been leaving the casino with their money. My husband laughed the first time I did it and told me it would never work and just looked at me when the four of a kind appeared on the screen. Now I notice that he is doing it with success. I also try and get the noisest machine on the line and the ones closest to the door. Now, if I can only take Ms. Costa's advise and know when to leave a machine and take my $$$ with me. Thumbs up on this book.

Real Wisdon With A Little Humor.......2007-04-08
This book is easy to read and has a fun style. It shows the authors' sense of humor in conveying the potentially "dry" information and with the use of colorful anecdotes.
I found the book to have timeless wisdom about what it takes to succeed as an SAP
consultant, and look at it from both the advantages and disadvantages of
independent consulting versus salaried consulting. The book includes case studies of consultants in transition and how they weighed their priorities and made effective career decisions.
Realizing that SAP information can become stale rapidly, the authors built in a "longevity resource" where readers can access a free website to get Jon Reed's latest career advice and market information.
The greatest benefit is that these guys don't seem to be consumed by their egos. I've emailed Jon with a question I had after reading the book, and he was very responsive.

A bit disappointed..........2006-08-25
After reading the many wonderful reviews here, I decided to get this book. Honestly, the material was disappointing. Sure, Jon Reed explains what it takes to be a good consultant, but fails to mention how.
I guess, if you're THINKING about making the leap to SAP, this book does give you a very good idea on what to expect. But if you're currently practicing SAP, forget about this book. There's nothing here that you don't already know. There was one chapter though, that did provide something new to me. SAP contracting. Jon Reed explains when to go into contracting, the pros and cons, and even analyzes (with examples) the lifes of some contractors.
Jon Reed undoubtly knows a lot about SAP. But unfortunately this book does not do him justice and does not capture the wealth of information he obviously has. I would've liked a book that explores a typical SAP project environment. How to deal with your team mates, with your clients? The best way of getting information from clients. If you're looking for this sort of information, look elsewhere as it is not here in this book. Other than that, as I said...a good introduction to someone trying to get into SAP.
SAP America trained consultant.......2006-06-21
I worked for SAP America for a few years, and I must say that this book would have been a great learning tool to teach us new employees on the skills of "how to be a software consultant." The authors give good examples on the pros and cons of entering into the world of SAP, and gives some real-time truths behind the software world. I wish that all book about SAP were so up front! Great job Mr. Reed and Mr. Doane.
The SAP Consultant Handbook.......2006-02-28
Our company choose to convert the operating system that we have used for 20+ years and I found myself needing more information about this system. This book gave me a great deal of insight in the workings of the SAP program and how to use all the tools that are built into it. I have offered advice to individuals who are being trained to teach this program and it has helped tremendously. I would recommend this handbook to anyone preparing to adapt SAP into there manufacturing enviroment. Just a note that the SAP consultants that were brought in to assist in starting this program here are making $85.00 an hour.
