Book Description
What Argenteuil in the 1870s was to French Impressionists, Cos Cob between 1890 and 1920 was to American Impressionists Childe Hassam, Theodore Robinson, John Twachtman, J. Alden Weir, and their followers. These artists and writers came together to work in the modest Cos Cob section of Greenwich, Connecticut, testing new styles and new themes in the stimulating company of colleagues. This beautiful book is the first to examine the art colony at Cos Cob and the role it played in the development of American Impressionist art.
During the art-colony period, says Susan Larkin, Greenwich was changing from a farming and fishing community to a prosperous suburb of New York. The artists who gathered in Cos Cob produced work that reflects the resulting tensions between tradition and modernity, nature and technology, and country and city. The artists' preferred subjectscolonial architecture, quiet landscapes, contemplative womenheld a complex significance for them, which Larkin explores. Drawing on maritime history, garden design, women's studies, and more, she places the art colony in its cultural and historical context and reveals unexpected depth in paintings of enormous popular appeal.

Overall, Very Good.......2005-10-13
This book contains a few truly beautiful paintings, but also some that, in my opinion, are not particularly beautiful or interesting. It gets 4 stars by virtue of the genuine beauty of the few. It's hard to judge just how well any book reproduces works of art, but the quality of these reproductions SEEMS to be fine. And while I applaud publishers who print on acid-free or alkaline paper--as is purportedly the case for this book--the pages of the copy I saw (printed in 2001) are already starting to yellow at the edges.

Beautiful book, but..........2006-05-12
The author started with a great idea of finding inspiration in old paintings. The jewels are far from being perfect copies but their imperfection gives them an appealing style.
However, since this is a how-to book, it should at least introduce the polymer clay to the beginners. The author reduced the subject into a single paragraph. You have to guess where to obtain most of the material; don't look for a list of suppliers, there is none. This "je m'en fous" attitude may work for the French but the English-speaking reader expects a more thorough approach to details.
Beautiful Book.......2006-04-26
This book is just beautiful. Its an inspiration.I love the way they explain the lessons..and I can change them as I like with no problem.using my own inspiration. Its a all skills level book.on just doing that.Im ever so glad I was able to find it and get it.Its just a treasure.B.W.
Absolutely fabulous!!!.......2005-02-15
This book is a must have for those who like to have some inspiration for jewelry that's just a touch different from the trendy stuff you see all around. It's not available in Dutch unfortunately, but I still bought it and haven't regretted it for a single moment. I've had it ever since it came out and I've used it as a source of inspiration lots of times already. I use it for making pendants especially...and the result is always super!!!
The fun thing about it, is that the artist was inspired by art and when I'm in a museum nowadays, I often find myself looking closely at painted jewelry.
This book shows how you can make wonderful and stylish jewelry of very cheap materials. Also, the techniques used are not as difficult or as painstaking as many other polymer clay techniques like making canes for instance. It's a matter of preparing your clay, shaping it in combination with stones, glass, shells...etc...adding some colour with metal powders, baking, cooling, (painting), polishing, varnishing and attaching some findings...Ready!!! You can have a splendid result in one afternoon's work!
An Inspirational How-To Book!.......2003-05-12
I just completed two projects in this book and the pieces turned out beautifully! This is my first foray into the polymer clay medium and I can't wait to create more pieces.
I do not understand some of the previous reviewers' comments about the pieces being unsophisticated etc.... these are reproductions of ANTIQUE pieces which, by definition, didn't use modern "sleeker" methods of metallurgy etc... One reviewer also mentioned that painting with the model paints is a problem. Not so! My only conclusion is that the author of that review didn't try the techniques or didn't follow the directions for painting. The "Testor" brand paints I used worked great.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in recreating antique pieces. The projects are easy, fun, and a springboard to use one's own creativity.
Good for inspiration, but lacking in honor.......2002-11-27
As a beginning jeweler who has worked with polymer clay in the past, I was quite excited to read this book. Though it inspired me to create some new pieces, I found the projects offered to be a complete disgrace to the original artists.

A truly captivating book........2000-07-05
I have now spent many hours with this book with the hope of giving you more details. This book has captivated me. Instead of giving you the table of contents I will tell you a story about a woman I met in Miami Florida twenty-five years ago. She was an artist with some sinister connections and she placed a small solid gold Elephant in my had, it was about the size of my computer mouse but its weight drew my had to the floor at #8211; I was out classed I surely could not have afforded her or her Elephant. This magic book evoked that story I love dealing with these items and meeting people who share my interest in them. In each of the great civilizations ( From the time of the Pharaohs to the present had,, artists working with working with gold and other precious metals have created objects of eternal beauty, beauty so rich and well defined that it sets the standards for each succeeding age across the chasms of time for centuries and even millenniums With 580 superb and vivid color photographs. Some of them covering two pages this book is sort of a portal across time. The Worlds great art treasures will supply you with the next best felling to actually seeing and holding these objects. If you are an artist this is an idea book, if you are a jeweler this is an inspiration book, if you are a costumer or movie or television producer this is a source book, if you are a writer this is a reference book if you are student of high culture across the ages this is your stuff. More and more history is moving away from it textual obsession and back into the world because its public demands it, and in most cases is paying for it. This is the sort of item that makes a bookseller weep. This book is the physical record of Spanish Monarchy's Commemorative exhibit which took place at Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York honoring the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas, this breathtaking collection of Armor an Tapestries covering the 16th Century from the birth of Charles V in 1500, to 1598 The death of Philip II. With an Introduction by Spain's King Juan Carlos I is really Spain's gift to The America's and the world. Not just the world of art, however, because this wonderful book has something for everyone. From the Renaissance art historian to the weekend member of SCA (Society for Creative anachronism. This book will fascinate of the student of material culture, (like myself) who might want make an analysis of 16th Century Hapsburg Material culture. It would be just as interesting to the recreations or the late Medieval Interpreter Someone, for example who might what to try his hand at making a reproduction of the worlds best armor from the 16th Century one who might want to Look at the full-page detail on the joint of the suit of armor on page 116 and 117. I could write hundreds of more words about this book, and I might even touch on the historical narrative, and, allegorical tropes within the twelve tapestries presented but I must stop somewhere. You have Sword armor tapestries in detail where they could probably be computer scanned and reproduced if one chose, of course within the limits of copyright. This is a time when I wish I had a scanner but Probably am lucky I don't This is an amazing combination of Tapestries and armor, two very disparate art forms, which are collected together to portray the taste culture and formidable power of Hapsburg monarchs Charles V And his son Phillip II in Spain during the 16th century in this catalogue of an actual historical exhibition which Celebrates the quincentennial of the European discovery of America and introduces American audiences to two of the Patrimonia's most prized collections. Prestigious jewellery? YES. Prestigious book? NO!.......2000-12-31
What an absolute waste of your money. The book is just a collection of brochures taken from all the Haute Joaillerie Houses all over the world, bundle them together and sell it for a hardcover price. The photos are nevertheless breathtaking and, ofcourse, a feast for your eyes. The text is like a salesman in training.
Advertising by the pound?.......1998-05-10
The alliance of a cheap deals-minded person with, a devoted advertorialist copywriter should produce a very efficient pamphlet for jewelry companies in search of recognition (unfortunatly great Jewelry houses will realize it later on...) This book will be certainly used to display current(?) and complete(?)collections, trends and other over and over covered subjects about fashion and trends... Can and will readers learn something out of sterile press releases compilations?

Book Description
Masterful timepieces, made by the hands of craftsmen in the mountains of Switzerland, are increasingly drawing the attention of collectors and connoisseurs around the world. The timepieces are fascinating not only because they keep precision time with engines built by man, but often because they offer more than time-telling features, such as mechanisms that record the times of athletes in competition, tell the lunar phase, signal the hour with a gong, or tell the time in several places over the world, all smoothly and intricately finished inside small cases that fit on the wrist.
Stunningly complex, tiny parts, some as thin as a hair, are assembled in designs so artful and beautiful that proud craftsmen leave their work open for display through sapphire glass in what are known as skeleton timepieces.
This book features full-color photographs of these treasures and traces man's obsession with time to today's present leaders in the watchmaking industry, including Breguet, Breitling, Blancpain, Franck Muller, Patek-Philippe, and Piaget.

Book Description
This is the first full-length study of personal ornament in use in Roman Britain. Written by Catherine Johns, a staff member at the British Museum and the leading authority on the subject, The Jewellery of Roman Britain emphasizes the presence of two distinct cultural and artistic traditions, the Classical elements introduced by the Romans and the native Celtic background. The interaction of these traditions affected all aspects of Romano-British life and is vividly illustrated in the jewelry, many pieces of which have only recently emerged from the soil of the British Isles.
The meaning and significance of personal ornament in various cultures is discussed, and the special problems inherent in the study of archaeological material are explained. Handsomely illustrated and accessible to the nonspecialist, The Jewellery of Roman Britain represents an important contribution to the study of British history and will be welcomed by amateurs and professionals alike.
Catherine Johns is Assistant Keeper, Department of Prehistoric and Roman British Antiquities, the British Museum.

All the alien wonder of a sci-fi fantasy world and the familiar trials of being sixteen years old are brought to life in a series that does for fantasy what "Harry Potter" does for magic.

Book Description
ed Handy was captured by Germans in April 1944, after his B-24 was shot down. Sent to Stalag 17, the infamous Nazi prison camp, Handy soon led an escape team determined to tunnel to freedom. Along with the unforgettable comrades he vividly describes, Handy worked relentlessly for months on a tunnel that was to prove instrumental in saving the lives of four fugitives sought by the Gestapo. One of those fugitives would become the only American ever to escape permanently from Stalag 17. The Flame Keepers is a vivid first-hand account of an American soldier's experience as a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany and a poignant portrait of the POWs who worked to survive within the wire and their German captors. Illustrated with original photographs taken inside the camp from a smuggled camera and published for the first time in the trade press, The Flame Keepers recounts one of World War II's great untold stories.
Customer Reviews:
Reading it was like Dad telling me about the whole ordeal.......2007-08-15
My Dad was a POW in Stalag 17 during the same period of time as Handy. Dad had a hard time of it and it really was difficult for him to talk much about it. I now know that it would have been much better for him, and us, if he had been able to talk about it. He died in 2004.
Many of the things he did tell me in bits and pieces over the years about his experiences Handy described also. The Kregie who killed imself by deliberately crossing over 'the wire', the tunneling efforts, the dirt in the rafters, the sawdust bread, the interrogations, solitary, the bunks, the cold, the hunger, the frightened guards, the end in the forest. Lot and lots of pieces of the puzzle.
Dad was a most devout Catholic and, as it turned out, the only prisoner in camp who had been trained to be an Altar Boy. He gave lessions in Latin to train many other prisoners who were 'getting religion' in those desperate times. Dad described the Christams Mass in great detail, and it was striking to read Handy's account of that sermon. It was erie to read Handy's account of it all and how identical it was to Dad's. It was a very uplifting sermon that Dad and Handy never forgot.
My Mother told me about this book and I ordered it immediatly from Amazon and couldn't put it down until I had read all the way through. It was as if Dad was sitting in the room and describing the whole horror, step by step, and in chronological sequence for the first time which enabled me to put it all together for the first time. Now I have an even deeper understanding and appreciation for what Dad had endured, and how tragic his ongoing suffering had been, what it meant for his life, how much he had sacrificed, not only for those 16 months as a POW - but throughout the remainder of his life. I also got some insights regarding how it impacted mine life and my family's. I wish Dad could have read it him self 50 years ago. Thanks, Ned for getting it out for all of us to understand.
If you have any POWs in your immediate family, especially if that POW is or was your father - or you were a POW and you have children, I would say that this is required reading.
A worthy read.......2007-05-21
Loved this book. It grabbed my attention from the very start and never let it drift...housework and commitments be damned! Knowing it was a true story made it all the more gripping. I highly recommend it.
A true and accurate account.......2007-02-03
One of the heroes in this book, Gene Meese, is a friend of mine. He no longer talks much about his war experiences but he does say that Ned Handy tells the story with great accuracy. Oh, sure, much was omitted -- some of it quite bad -- but the core and substance is there and treated well.
Knowing Gene and reading the book deepened my appreciation for all the terror our troops, past and present, have endured for our country.
Incredible Tale of Successful Ingenuity, Perseverance, Courage.......2005-08-04
It is not hyperbole to say that The Flame Keepers is an excellent, well-paced book that will captivate readers of all ages and backgrounds - from teens to seasoned citizens. Not only about World War II, or even strictly a "war story," the book covers the effects on human behavior of war, imprisonment and defiance of one's enemies -- all well beyond the armored battles that raged.
Author and protagonist Ned Handy tells the unvarnished story through his eyes of a network of men and comrades-at-arms whose sudden imprisonment brought out their individual and collective ingenuity, bravery, stamina and perseverance in ways they could not have imagined. These qualities possessed by so many "ordinary" sergeants came to the fore when they faced the stark choice of surviving or giving up behind a wire, while watched by armed guards, deep in enemy territory, and in spite of brutal weather and a starvation diet. The incredible story of a brash and brilliantly conceived escape attempt from Stalag Luft XVII-B plays a major part in the narrative, and it is spell-binding.
Mr. Handy employs simple but eloquent language that takes the reader on a hard-to-put-down journey through five seasons in the life of a 21-year-old B-24 flight engineer and top turret gunner, who survives a shoot-down only to be imprisoned in infamous Stalag XVII-B. Events inside Stalag 17 are interwoven with interesting vignettes that bring to life Mr. Handy's memories of home, family and early life, which inform his ability to survive the prison ordeal. He ascribes well-deserved credit to his colleagues, from his crewmates to POWs with whom he lived in extremely close quarters for more than a year. He describes how each POW used the talents he had to their utmost, such that they were able to survive, defy the enemy at times, and create a vital internal safety net for their fellows when it mattered most. For a man imprisoned and isolated for a time due to circumstances that are movingly presented in the text, Mr. Handy presents a fair-minded view of the individual human beings behind the generic descriptors, "soldier," "prisoner," "enemy," "guard," and "civilian."
It is easy to get "lost" while reading this book, and is a challenge to return, during the intervals one puts it down, to the regular and occasionally mundane tasks of everyday living. For it is the ability to do these tasks, and to take advantage of all the small and large freedoms we have today, that was denied the prisoners of war like Mr. Handy and those whom he describes so vividly. And although the author doesn't indulge in self-praise, the reader cannot help but thank God for stalwart men like Mr. Handy and his comrades, who sacrificed so much for the liberty and prosperity we all enjoy today. It's a must-read for all ages.
Up Close and Personal View of Stalag 17.......2005-01-05
I am a WWII buff as I know had it not been for those who served we would not be here. So reading and appreciating those sacrifices is paramount to me.
I found this book "disturbing" (in a good way) in that the book literally took the reader inside the walls of Stalag 17.
It was a fearful experience and filled me with dread and agony for those who lived through that experience.
Some of the material mirrows what the movie "Stalag 17" depicted but certainly not with the Hollywood context of stalag life.
Ned Handy is one of countless heros who served all of us. God bless them, each and every one.
This is a book to cherish and help us understand the horror of war and the sacrifices of so many.

Book Description
Stalag 17 (1953), the riveting drama of a German prisoner-of-war camp, was adapted from the Broadway play directed by José Ferrer in 1951. Billy Wilder developed the play and made the film version more interesting in every way. Edwin Blum, a veteran screenwriter and friend of Wilder's, collaborated on the screenplay but found working with Wilder an agonizing experience.
Wilder's mordant humor and misanthropy percolate throughout this bitter story of egoism, class conflict, and betrayal. As in a well-constructed murder mystery, the incriminating evidence points to the wrong man. Jeffrey Meyers's introduction enriches the reading of Stalag 17 by including comparisons with the Broadway production and the reasons for Wilder's changes.

Cinematic Magic........2002-05-01
Billy Wilder adapted the stage play of STALAG 17 and improved it every way he could. This is a copy of the original screenplay for the movie so all of the scenes are here, including a few snippets that were deleted in the final version of the film. The story is brilliantly put together and it only takes about an hour to ninety minutes to read the whole thing, including the informative introduction. This is a wonderful example to explore for anyone who wants to write or is writing screenplays and it is also great for any movie buff or fan of Wilder.
Quite Simply- Brilliant.......2000-12-11
If you enjoyed just one episode of Hogans Heroes then you will love Stalag 17, which was the inspiration of that show. Although I must admit that I am not a big fan of the Animal character the script itself is darn close to perfection. Stalag 17 is one of the funniest films of all time. The plot is simple and is basically just several episodes in a german prisoner of war camp in world war II as the prisoners suspect that they have an informer in their midst. The scene where they find out who the informer actually is, is one the best scenes that you can watch or read. William Holden won the best actor oscar for his performance in this film and with material like this too work from it is not hard to understand why.

Stalag 17: Check out both the play and the film.......2002-08-09
This is the original script for the stage presentation of Stalag 17. I have seen the film countless times in whole or in part. I have never seen it on stage. I did read this script about 28 years ago, and now I have finished it again.
There are some major differences in the complexity and focus of the play and the film. Some of this is obviously logistics: A play, especially with one stage setting over three acts, cannot be as complex as a film.
As I read through the script, I of course visualized each character that was in the play. I could picture Robert Strauss and Stosh (The Animal) and Harvey Lembeck as Harry Shapiro. I had a little trouble relating the Bill Holden version of Sefton to what is in the stage play. In the play he comes out as not always cynical and able to dialogue with the other characters more.
The play is good as far as it goes, and we have to remember that it came before the film. I think the film is a definite improvement on the basic story. Edmund Trzcinski co-wrote the play based on his own experiences, and then played in the film later. This implied that he approved of the changes made to make this story work on the screen.
I rank the film as my number three favorite of all time, following The Godfather Trilogy and West Side Story. Casablanca comes in at number four. (All rankings subject to change)

Great listening!.......2006-05-03
Handy does a great job of bringing the listener into his WWII experiences as a prisoner of war in Stalig 17. Honest, articulate, interesting, comprehensive. His writing style is absorbing. If you have to stop listening, you'll look forward to the time you can return to it. The voice inflections of the reader takes a little getting used to, but the content will soon overcome this initial distraction and leave you anxious to return to Handy's world.

This is not a guide to the online game!.......2005-06-28
It is important to note that this is a players' guide for a "pen-and-paper" role-playing game. This IS NOT a guide to the online multiplayer PC game called EverQuest II.
dated information.......2005-03-19
I quickly scanned this book upon receiving it and saw some information that is badly out of date involving the Isles of Refuge. I was hoping to received a useful reference and this was not so I returned it.

Growing Pains : Transitioning from an Entrepreneurship to a Professionally Managed Firm.......2007-03-09
This is a great book for anyone in business. It offers tools such as the Growing Pains Questionnaire that you can use in your organization to gather valuable information to work from.
Textbookish but useful.......2006-08-30
This is a book about an important topic - the transitions compnies must go through, from the struggle for surival to becoming a large, mature company. It contains a very useful and credible model in the form of a pyramid depicting the 'normal' growth stages of a company, beginning with defining product/market and ending with establishing a corporate culture. Two noticeable shortcomings: the authors seem to largely ignore strategy and business models in their description of the growth path, and second, it is written in a very lieless and textbookish style. The management jargon rolls on and on, dulling the reader's mind, and making him wonder if he is reading the same page again and again. The entire approach is extremely conventional, with very little appreciation for more modern theories of management. Overall, a good book, not great.
A High-level Roadmap for Building a "Professional" Business.......2005-11-30
Flamholtz (the author) does and excellent job of describing the various stages of organizational growth. In each stage he describes what an organization must be doing in order to grow into the next level. The book provides plenty of real-world examples that Flamholtz has himself been a part of. Flamholtz also does a great job of interjecting his business street smarts. The guy understands how to grow a business and he does an even better job of laying it out for the reader in this book through frameworks and human resource concepts.
A Must Read..........2002-01-30
This book is a must read for anyone in business. For the entrepreneur, it can be used as a guide. For the more experienced business person, it can be used as a dose of reality. Having just completed my MBA and writing my thesis on this very topic, I only wish I had read this book 6 months earlier.
The authors provide an excellent framework for growing a business along with relevant case studies. And while it may look like a typical text book, it is less theory than most. This is one to be kept for years to come!
Thin on ideas, long on text.......2001-05-07
After having spent three years working at a pretty disorganized dot.com, I wanted to learn more about the right and wrong ways that young firms grow up. This book presents a fair framework that charts a company's growth, though it assumes that the troubles start when too many orders pour in and sales do not result in profits. (Not the case at a dot.com)
Firms are classified into four stages of development, and the text describes the good and bad of each. Some methodologies are presented for "scoring" the company for an offhand appraisal of its strengths and situation. (Kind of like the CMM scale, I guess)
But the worst part about the book was how tedious it was to read. The author spends hundreds of pages explaining just a few core concepts. The text describes, on and on, what the author is going to say next, then says it, and then reminds you about it for page after page. Just get to the point!
