Book Description
The Education of the Eye examines the origins of visual culture in eighteenth-century Britain. It claims that at the moment when works of visual art were first displayed and contemplated as aesthetic objects two competing descriptions of the viewer or spectator promoted two very different accounts of culture. The first was constructed on knowledge, on what one already knew, while the second was grounded in the eye itself. Though the first was most likely to lead to a socially and politically elite form for visual culture, the second, it was held, would almost certainly end up in the chaos of the mob. But there was another route through these conflicting accounts of the visual that preserved the education of the eye while at the same time allowing the eye freedom to enter into the realm of culture. This third route, that of the sentimental look, is explored in a series of contexts: the gallery, the pleasure garden, the landscape park, and the country house. The Education of the Eye sets out to reclaim visual culture for the democracy of the eye and to explain how aesthetic contemplation may, once more, be open to all who have eyes to look.
The book will interest historians of eighteenth-century British culture and historians of architecture, art, and landscape, as well as readers generally curious about the origins of our current visual culture.

Regarding spoilers in this volume.......2004-06-29
Another reviewer notes: "this one spoils the suspense of other volumes (Shards - Ascent - Reunion) by telling what happens to the elves who are fighting elsewhere while Ember is muddling through 'Huntress.' I'm amazed that the authors did such a clumsy thing!"
It's worth noting that the reason for this is that the original comics of Huntress and Shards were being published simultaneously. References back and forth were to keep the stories current with each other -- but I agree that if you are reading them in this book format, rather than the original serials, there is risk of such spoilers.
(Amazon requires that I give a rating, so I'll rank this book 3 stars, on a scale from 1 (anything Barry Blair did in the EQ world) to 5 (Pini art & stories). To one who spent decades with only Wendy Pini's art, the very different art style here is jarring, and the story sometimes clumsy -- but worthwhile once I got past that.)
Flawed, but be sure to read it anyway. It grows on you........1999-11-05
This book was disappointing on first read, mostly because it doesn't fill in the emotional details for you. It makes you use your imagination to realize how the characters feel about the terrible things that are happening to them. My advice is to buy the book (yes, definitely buy it) and read it slowly a few times. I like it a lot, now that I've had time to ponder it. The artwork is quite good, the characters look pretty much the way Wendy Pini would draw them, and the sharp, clean pen and ink reproduces nicely in black and white. This book contains quite a lot of violence but very little nudity and no "adult situations" (yay). I really liked the continuing character development with Skywise and the very interesting new guy, Teir. On the down side, the story revolves around a pretty unbelievable group of adversaries, and I don't see why the authors have decided to make Winnowill responsible for every big problem the Wolfriders encounter. Not very plausible. Also, it's frustrating that the mysteries regarding Teir are not explained in this volume -- although apparently that is to be done in an upcoming book. But WORST OF ALL (!) this one spoils the suspense of other volumes (Shards - Ascent - Reunion) by telling what happens to the elves who are fighting elsewhere while Ember is muddling through "Huntress." I'm amazed that the authors did such a clumsy thing! And if you read "Reunion" first, it will spoil the end of "Huntress." ("Huntress" is meant to be read before "Reunion.") Very bad! But I do recommend that you read this book. It's an important and poignant part of the saga.
Ember and Teir: a story about the decision from hell.......1999-06-21
"Huntress", the follow-up to the book "Legacy", describes the struggle of the young chieftess Ember to reconcile her love for the stranger Teir with the scary possibility that his presence could lead to the deaths of her tribesfolk. (Without giving too much away, let it be said that the ending of the story is NOT neat and clean, but raw as an open wound - and very moving for that reason. This story-line does not reach closure for a dozen years; but that is another story, another book - and not anytime soon.)
Compared to the artwork in "Legacy" (both books together comprise the last 14 issues of the "Hidden Years" comic-book series), that in "Huntress" is nearly all of a piece, and of a much higher standard. The one controversial point is the abrupt switch, after the second chapter, from color to black-and-white. WaRP's spin on this change is that it was an artistic decision. Don't believe it - in fact WaRP Publications faced a cash crunch in late 1995 that forced them to abandon color publication in order not to have their several stories - seven, at one point - orphaned. This is unfortunate, even though the present book is not in color; much of the extra visual richness comes through anyway.
A final note: to get a full grasp of the complete story, read this volume in conjunction with volume 12a, "Reunion" (not yet published), whose story parallels that in this book.
A worthy continuation of this magnificent series!.......1999-06-05
I was first introduced to the Elfquest world over 13 years ago, and I fell in love with the story. Unfortunately, I was too young at the time to have enough money to buy the other books, however, that's all changed. I now have a job of my own, and can buy the series whenver I feel like it. This story tells of Cutter's grown up daughter, Ember, who must lead her people away from the war that her Father is fighting, thus giving the Wolfriders a chance to survive. In this story, Ember must make some hard decisions, which show that she has truly earned the right to be chief.

Funny Stuff from the Queen of the Trailer Park!.......2004-11-18
Whether or not you actually execute any of Ruby Ann's kitschy krafts, this book will amuse you and put you in the campy Christmas spirit.
Sparkling with humor and innate sense of down home fun, this holiday How-To manual will transform your white elephant trash into treasures to be cherished far beyond the next swap meet!
A fun stocking stuffer for anyone who appreciates a good bouffant hairdo or the culinary value of potato chips in any casserole recipe.
THE BEST ONE FROM RUBY ANN SO FAR.......2004-10-09
Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed all of Ruby Ann Boxcar's books, but this one I ended up reading twice already and I just got it at the first of the month. She is one of the funniest writers in today's market and she even exceeds that if possible with Move Over Santa. This is a must regardless of who you are. And the photos are as funny as the writing. Thanks Ruby Ann for another winner.

Life of the King.......2006-05-05
I recently stumbled on this biography. I meant to flip through it to look up some trivia and ended up reading it cover to cover. It's an eye-opening and quite moving account of the actor we've come to associate with The King & I. The book details much of the circumstances around Brynner's films which I found most interesting. It's sad that such a gifted actor with a talent for directing ended up making so many B-movies. I really enjoyed this book. His rocky relationship with his son (no pun intended), adds a new dimension to his persona. The only drawback for me is that some of the events are told out of synch. For a good companion piece, read Yul Brynner: The Inscrutable King by Jhans Robbins. The chronology of events are clearer there. Plus, it has a complete list of Brynner's works.
Sad tale.......2005-11-21
I recently saw some movies of Yul Brynner and was much impressed by his talents as an actor and his incredible screen presence. I read this book to find out more about the man behind the actor. I felt extremely sad after learning how he would put fame above family and friends. Myself an immigrant twice in two different countries, and having to learn French as a second language and then English a while later, just like Yul had to, I experienced the same exclusion and injustice as he did and I understand his anger against the Fox executives and those who profited from the actors. I wished he did get a chance to become a movie director...and succeed as such because his life probably would have been very different. It is ironic that he would hate his father so much to the point of wanting to kill him for not being there for him but that he, would too, abandon his wives and children. Despite being disappointed in his behavior, he remains the greatest actor to my eyes. Bless his heart and I wish that in his next life, he would be a more forgiving and compassionate person.
The man who would be king.......2005-09-19
This excellent biography of Yul Brynner, written by his son Rock, is a must-read for all of the King's many fans. It clarifies the often-conflicting stories of Yul Brynner's birth, describes his childhood in Paris (where he spent his time entertaining in gypsy night clubs), and his memorable stint on Broadway in "The King and I" in the 1950s. His film successes, such as "The King and I" and "The Ten Commandments," and his many screen flops are discussed, but it is Yul, the family man, who is at the center of the book.
When Rock was young, his father doted on him; even after his parents divorced and Yul moved on through three more marriages, the two were close. But when his son failed to achieved stability or success as a young adult, Yul summarily cut off all ties with him for a while. In the 1980s, out of money (as always), Yul began an eight-year tour of "The King and I" which was hugely successful, but he identified with the role so completely, he became an unreasonable tyrant, alienating himself from those closest to him. He kept doing eight shows a week even after he was diagnosed with cancer, dying just weeks after his 4,633rd performance as the King.
This is a riveting biography about a fascinating man.

Yul Brynner - A Flawed King.......2003-06-22
This book, written by his son Rock Brynner, is a poignant and revealing look into the life of his famous father, Yul Brynner. Rock unveils "The King," and shows that his father was a flawed, and sometimes wreckless man behind the "King's" facade. Rock uncovers how life was growing up with his famous father, and how he could never live up to the expectations of a King. Rock's literary style mix fact with his own feelings about - The Man Who Would Be King.
Sad overall picture.......1999-09-16
I enjoyed the honesty of Son Yul Jr. He tried so hard to please his Dad and follow his footsteps Never could quite live up to SR. expectations. So sad that he dumped so many of wives and children the final blow DISOWNING his children in will.. Sad Sad yet I loved him as a talented actor. Where and how is YUL Jr. today I wish him well. He loved his Dad so much

This book is a must for anyone in sales........2007-03-09
This book is a must for anyone in sales. Actually, if you have any contact with anyone at anytime in your life, this book is worth reading. This book is a great reminder on good salesmanship for those who have been in sales for a while and a very good place to start for people new to the sales world. Hal Becker also explains how good sales techniques aren't just for sales people they are for everyone. This is a must read for anyone in sales, business or customer service.
It works if you will........2005-04-12
Hal Becker's book is the number 1 book for those of you in sales. Persistance, knowledge and courage are the ingredients, and Hal takes the time to help you apply them. This little book is worth more than its' size will convey. IF YOU ARE IN SALES THIS BOOK WILL KEEP YOU IN THE GAME.
Excellent.......2004-03-29
I met Hal on an airplane ... little did I know that the total stranger I struck up a conversation with was about to change everything I thought I knew about my career! He gave me a copy of his book - and even autographed it for me. I am buying 10 copies to give to my sales staff. It reinforces all of the most important aspects of selling, and it's funny too. If I could give it 10 stars, I would.
Is it really that simple!.......2002-03-07
I received Halýs book after listening to him speak at one of our company offsite meetings. I have only been in sales now 3 years and just from reading his book and listening to him speak I have learn 5 times what I learned in 3 years. Hal makes everything about selling seem so simple and easy that you want to smack yourself in the head. ýCanýt be that simple, and if it is why didnýt I think of thisý?
Once I started to read the book I couldnýt put it down, you will fly through this book in 2 hours and not even realize it. It easy to read, itýs fun, and more than that itýs just full of the simplest ways and steps to selling. I have applied some of what I learned from him and his book and they work, bottom line! If you are in any area of sales I highly suggest you read this book. In the 2 hours it will take for you to read it, your view on sales will change forever!
Outstanding! Quick and easy read........1997-05-05
As a sales professional, I found this book very worthwhile. Becker breaks everything down to simple, easy to understand examples. His pride and professionalism shine through in each chapter. If you are going to read only one book about how to sell, make this the one
