Book Description
Celebrating the Italian Genius in fashion and design, each volume is devoted to a prestigious leader of Italian Creativity in couture, their design philosophy, style and products. The names that have become synonymous with glamour, celebrity, and star quality from the fifties to this day are the subjects of this collection.
Fashion in the late twentieth century has assumed its rightful place as an art form. It is not surprising that Versace originally studied architecture and Ferre has been called the Frank Lloyd Wright of Italian fashion. Couture is now a staple of many museum collections and at the the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York it has become one of the most popular targets for its throngs of visitors. The books in this series have been produced with the cooperation of the design companies. Each volume contains an incisive text covering the organization's history, creations, their materials, and accessories.

Book Description
It's perceptive. It's irreverent. But, more than anything, FoxTrot is reliably funny year after year, strip after strip. FoxTrot Collection is the latest collection of strips featuring the funny and flawed Fox family. It marks the 23rd collection of this comic strip staple that can be found in more than 1,000 newspapers worldwide every day. FoxTrot Collection is the latest chronicle of the chaotic Fox family-parents Roger and Andy, teenagers Peter and Paige, and ten-year old Jason and his pet iguana, Quincy. This book finds Roger behind his keyboard struggling to write a spy novel, prompting helpful writing advice from Jason such as "the 'on' switch is that little round one." The others add to the insanity, with Jason battling video games, Paige searching for a personal assistant, Peter eating and eating, and Andy stressing through it all.Everyone experiences day-to-day turmoil in their family life, which is why Bill Amend's FoxTrot Collection is sure to resonate with readers across the globe.
Customer Reviews:
Non-Stop Laughter -- Really!.......2007-02-23
I have been a faithful FoxTrot reader for years. Roger, Andy and their kids Peter, Paige and Jason are always good for a reality check with a large dose of laughter. I've got two girls and let me tell you, I see a lot of my kids in Paige with, I believe, even a healthy dose of Jason thrown in. And they have Peter's bottomless stomach. Of course, they're faithful FoxTrot readers too. I used to read the strip to them, explain what was going on, but now they get it just fine and we three all laugh together. Then my girls try and explain the strip to their dad, who pretends he doesn't get it.
The FoxTrot folks are a great family, one we sort of got used to checking up on every day, so we took the news that Mr. Amend was going to cease daily distribution of his wonderfully funny people and turn his strip to Sunday only, with a bit of sadness. Still, we have these terrific FoxTrot books to keep us going with our FoxTrot fix. Mr. Amend is to be commended for his great gift to our culture and his great gift to so many lives. I truly believe a laugh a day, helps keep the blues away and the FoxTrot gang are always good for a laugh. Heck there are a lot of laughs in the FoxTrot books. I know, I have them all and I am, along with my girls and my hubby dear, eagerly awaiting the next one.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention, we don't have an iguana, but my girls do have a pet gecko and, you guessed it, his name is Quincy.
His Code Name Was the Fox. Foxtrot, All Great!.......2007-01-19
I've been a Foxtrot reader for a long time and personally I think there is something suspiciously wrong with people who don't find Bill Amend's characters funny as all get out. If you want a good laugh, check out Bill in your local newspaper, or better yet, get one of the Foxtrot books. They are all great, really, they are.
Like many of Mr. Amend's fans I'm a bit disappointed he's switching his strip to Sunday-only, but fortunately I can still read him daily in the Foxtrot books. Get them one and all and you can keep right on a laughing.
"Can't you guys eat jelly beans like normal people?!".......2003-02-09
Here is another fabulous collection of FoxTrot comics, which proves that Bill Amend still has it at being funny and clever. Anytime I see a new one of these books on the shelves of bookstores, I purchase them immediately. I have lost track of the times I have read each of them. "His Code Name was The Fox" is a great collection filled with humor and surprises.
Once again we visit the Fox Family, who always end up getting into unpredictable situations. Jason is still finding new ways to torment his sister, Roger is just as unintelligent as ever (especially when he acts like he is smart), Andy is getting more and more strung out by trying to keep her family sane, and Peter is not gaining any weight, no matter how much he eats. All of them play a very important role in this very funny and entertaining collection.
Some of the stuff you will encounter in the collection:
*Roger's novel
*Basement cleaning
*Peter's return to working at the theatre
*Paige's new personal secretary
*Jason's new video playmate, and much more!
If you love Foxtrot, then you will fall in love with "His Code Name was The Fox." I have read it many, many times already and have not gotten sick of it yet. Bill Amend proves once again that he can keep the laughs coming. Very highly recommended!
Amend is still the best!.......2002-09-29
Once again the journey into Amend's world is a treat. His ability to sustain characters who are believable while remaining likable is not to be taken lightly. The last cartoonist who did that was Charles Schulz.
One request, Mr. Amend: Please let Jason have a real computer! At least give him a scroll mouse with five buttons - he deserves it!
Another Great FoxTrot Book.......2002-08-14
This is the 3rd FoxTrot book in the new smaller size. But don't let the smaller size of this book put you off. The strips inside are as large as ever (some even larger) and there are no problems reading it!
This book covers strips from Christmas 2001 through summer 2002 (actual dates not known at the time of this writing). The cover refers to an attempt by Roger to write a spy novel in which he is the star. The strips covering this funny even are all inside as are the usual fun caused by the Fox family and friends. Clean artwork and clean, fun humor abound in this comic strip book. Great for light reading before bed, or any other time!
Book Description
For the first time, Tom Green—who shot to fame as host of MTV’s The Tom Green Show; starred in a hit movie; wrote and directed his own film, which was soundly trashed by the entertainment press; married and divorced Hollywood royalty; and suffered a very public, poignant, and even darkly comic battle with testicular cancer—tells the wild story of his unlikely journey from media darling to media punching bag and how he survived the Hollywood hype machine.
Seven years ago, Tom Green was a skateboarding fanatic who lived with his parents in Canada, worked on comedy with his friends, and dreamed of becoming a talk-show host. He was doing a public access show up north when MTV heard about him and brought him to New York to see what he could do in the big city. Tom became an instant smash, slicing up dead raccoons on stage, introducing his parents to Monica Lewinsky in the middle of the night, and pioneering a type of shocking humor that begat Jackass, Fear Factor, and other reality shows.
In the next few years, Tom starred in the hilarious Road Trip and three other movies (Freddy Got Fingered, Stealing Harvard, and Charlie’s Angels), married and divorced Drew Barrymore, and recorded his surgery for testicular cancer in a well-received, hysterical, and oddly moving documentary for MTV. But the fearless Canadian with the outrageous sense of humor, hit show, and tabloid-hyped marriage got a taste of the darker side of Hollywood, too, as the media that made him the toast of Tinseltown cut him down to size in the wake of his divorce, illness, and some professional bumps in the road.
Hollywood Causes Cancer not only tells the full story of Tom’s wildly entertaining trip to celebrity but is also an absorbing and even revelatory look at a dramatic, excessive, ruthless place called Hollywood, and how one man survived his journey into the heart of it all.
Customer Reviews:
So much better than you'd expect........2005-12-01
If you like Tom Green, read this book. If you hate Tom Green, read this book. Tom is a genuine talent. Amazing. I was riveted by Tom's story. I read this in one day.
My Favorite Book.......2005-07-30
Wow, this is now my favorite book, (Although that isn't saying much, I rarely read) It is a funny, but also serious book about Tom Green's life. I read this book in 1 day (I got home from a friend's house a 12 AM and read until 5 AM, went to sleep, then woke up and finished it) I just couldn't stop reading it. This is a great book whether you are a fan of Tom Green or not.
Much more than just a biography.......2005-07-14
I was never a huge Tom Green fan, as I was a few years too old to appreciate his MTV show. I was intrigued by his story, which as I'd heard was that he was a small town Canadian boy who struck it big with gross-out humor and MTV.
After reading his biography, I have definitely changed any and all assumptions about him and his work. The insane rollercoaster of the best and worst luck in the world he experienced within a few years would be unbelievable were it not true. The decade of persistence that preceeded those huge years is in itself impressive. The anecdotes about giving a speech, a night with a rather wild woman, having and making use of a cell phone before cell phones were everywhere, plus so much more all adds up to one of the most interesting and captivating books I've ever read. Another point to mention is that in a world of gossip and salacious tales, Green gives more information and personal feelings than I expected, but never, not even once, uses the book to criticize anyone else or to try to make himself look like a hero. He shows a lot of appreciation and humility, and reveals an immense depth of character. I had intended to read this book over a period of time and started reading it on a four hour flight. As the plane landed I was only 30 pages away from the end. I exited the plane only to sit in the boarding gate and reopen it because I couldn't wait to finish the final little bit. It was that good. I highly recommend this book to fans, non-fans, and everyone else.
Fascinating stories.......2005-03-26
Tom Green is the funniest man on the planet. It's no shock that he has alot of stories to tell. I was shocked that I read the book so fast. It usually takes me a long time to read a book. It's not a story about cancer. That's just a minor speed bump in this crazy man's life. I'm sure there are major projects in Tom's future that will have us all laughing and laughing.
Interesting and fun read.......2005-02-24
I can't say that I'm a big fan of Tom's but I have seen a couple of his movies. Tom writes in a very honest and funny style and I enjoyed this book a lot.
Book Description
Alfred Hitchcock's films are a testament to his autonomy-but there was one person whose ideas and advice he valued above all others: his wife, Alma.
Who was the woman behind the most famous film director in the world?
Pat Hitchcock O'Connell offers rare insight into the life and career of her mother and father, and finally reveals Alma's extraordinary contribution to the Hitchcock legacy. Filled with fascinating personal anecdotes, Alma Hitchcock is also Pat Hitchcock's story-that of a young girl growing up in Hollywood, and her own on-set experiences in such films as Psycho and Strangers on a Train. With behind-the-scenes stories, moving testimonies from friends and family, and never-before-seen personal photos from the Hitchcock family album-as well as some of her mother's favorite recipes-Pat Hitchcock O'Connell illuminates the lives and careers of her parents as only a daughter could.
Customer Reviews:
There's No Substitute for Writing Skills.......2007-07-25
I feel bad saying anything critical about this book, since it's obviously written with love and care. But. . .it's also a testament to an important truth: even if you have a fascinating family, even if you have good stories to tell about them, even if you have an interesting (though not fully convincing) premise -- it's all for naught if you can't write.
(And why do so few of the photos have captions? It would be helpful to have some names, dates, places, contexts.)
a worthwhile addition, but nothing special.......2004-11-24
In skmming through the other customer reveiews for this book, it seems that they split between the typically gushing five-star reviews and the typicallly dismissive one-star reviews that are the bane of this website. Folks in both camps... please learn how to be sensible. You're not helping anybody by being shutter-eyed.
That said, maybe this review will provide some actual perspective on the book. Pat Hitchcock O'Connell's aims with her memoir are to chronicle her mother's contributions not only to Alfred Hitchcock's films, but to the emerging medium of film itself.
Is she successful in these aims? Well, not, not really. The book is not insightful enough to become truly noteworthy; too many of the passages are merely reflections, as opposed to examinations. But neither does she totally fail. After reaing the book, it is impossible to not feel as though Alma was, indeed, a tremendous part of what we now think of as the Hitchcock legacy. We may not find out as much about her contributions as we would like, but this book does seem once and for all the establish Alma as a vital element in Alfred's films.
Another problem: the book is way too breezy. When the making of a seminal masterpiece like "Rear Window" is covered in a mere page or two, something has gone wrong. I suspect that much of this is due to O'Connel's lack of any real knowledge of what went on collaboratively between alma and Alfred.
This breeziness is also something of a virtue, as well. It makes a relatively swift journey from the beginning of the Hitchcocks' careers through to their deaths, and that approach may not be terribly detailed, but it is easy to digest, in the same way that a suite from a musical is easy to digest when compared to the whole score. It cannot, and never should be, a replacement for the whole score; but it's satisfying enough in and of itself.
I also rather enjoyed the section in which many of Alma's recipes and dinner menus are reprinted. This may actually be the book's most significant contribution to the Hitchcock mythos, as it provides a peek into the inner workings of the family that no other writer has yet offered. I can't make much of an analysis of the recipes, since I am anything but a good cook; but they made me hungry as I read through them, and seemed sufficiently challenging to a culinary doofus like myself to make them seem to be genuinely good recipes.
Final thoughts: if you're a serious Hitchcock fan, then this book ought to be on your shelf. Don't expect any sort of a masterpiece, but it is certainly well worth reading.
Save your money.......2004-08-16
As a great Hitchcock fan, I really looked forward to this book. However, it reads like a high school freshman's term paper and the only really interesting thing you learn about Alma is that she was petite. If you want a list of all his movies by date, release date, foreign distribution date, etc., etc., then you'll enjoy this. I would have rather spent my time reading a calendar.
A daughter's tribute to her mother.......2003-09-30
I really enjoyed reading this biography because I have been a huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock for years and have always wondered what his family life was like. Who better to tell us than his and Alma's one and only daughter. While it was interesting to read about the film stuff in this book, I am so happy she did not go into analyzing them because ultimately I don't see this as a critical film book. As a family memoir and biography, this worked for me. While I would never try them, I loved reading through the menus and recipes in the back of the book because it gives you and extra special peek into the Hitchcock daily life. Alma was a wonderful woman, feisty like nothing else, a huge contributor to his films and others, and obviously a wonderful mother. Pat Hitchcock did a great job bringing us into her childhood and family life.
Disappointed.......2003-08-23
I have been waiting for someone to write a book that would recount the huge contribution that Alma Reville Hitchcock made to the films for which she received little or no credit. Unfortunately Pat's book does not do this in any depth.
The book is poorly written and disorganized skipping from one time period to another without transition. At times it is difficult to know who the speaker is with the use of many long quotes.
She is obviously uncomfortable calling her parents Alma and Hitch and so switches back and forth between those names and Mama and Daddy.
The book is not a bio of Alma but rather a blend of the work of Alma, Hitch, and Pat. There is little fleshing out of characters and aside from mentioning that Hitch listened to Pat or that Pat codirected or wrote a film script there is little detail of what Alma did.
Alma is portrayed as a mother of her time who was content largely to stay at home and cook. Pat portrays an idyllic family with a "daddy knows best" philosophy. If this book is intedned to document Alma's huge contribution to Hitch's films, it falls short.
Book Description
This collection of etudes, written during the 1970's, was composed as a reult of Jimmy Wyble's explorations into the musical worlds of counterpoint, harmony and chord melody improvisation for the jazz guitar. The right and left hand fingerings presented in this book were also developed as techniques needed to improvise jazz in two lines. Jimmy uses very standard jazz guitar chord shapes in these etudes; however, these shapes move through the harmony in lines rather than block chord structures. This broken chord technique creates a unique contrapuntal sound that separates Jimmy from the rest of the fingerstyle jazz guitar world. It is hoped that jazz and classical guitarists playing and working through these etudes will see many familiar chord shapes moving in new ways and creating new sounds. These new harmonic sounds combined with beautiful melodies will inspire any guitarist to new levels of musical creativity. Written in notation and tablature.
Customer Reviews:
The Unassuming Genius.......2003-11-19
I was a student at Guitar Institute of Technology in 1980 when Jimmy was teaching there - he quietly taught the whole first class without introducing himself! This book is largely his studies that he wrote to lead himself into a way of composing and improvising using the symetric diminished scale, among others, and will give a bluesy yet otherworldly modern classical feeling to the player that can hang in with the reading.
At the time I orignally bought this, there were some mistakes in the transcription, so if they haven't corrected them the CD that comes with this is vital for it's interpretation. Jimmy taught me most of my foundation of right hand fingerpicking independence with this book, I highly recommend it for anyone that want their hands and their ears to get a challange!
Customer Reviews:
A very worthwhile opening book with lots of neat analysis!.......2005-11-25
This is one of Mr. Schiller's best books! If you really want to get some new ideas in the openings then this book is worth considering. It has a lot of different type of analysis. Don't just get a standard opening text like MCO without getting "World Champion Openings" to go along with it!
Mediocre at best. Okay for beginners but lacks detail.......2003-10-06
World Champion Openings by Eric Shiller is not a good book. Eric Shiller rountinely criticsized for the vast amount of errors in his books.
Good points:
It is easy to read. It gives a nice simple overview of the major openings so you can learn the basic response to many openings. If you have no concept about any openings and are a absolute beginner, this is a okay book to buy.
Bad points:
It lacks detail or options. For many the variations to each opening, he only gives one line. Then it wastes too much time and space going over a whole example game. You're not buying a book to learn the middlegame though.
For example, the Caro-Kann defense Advance variation. After "1.e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5..." The next move he gives is "c5." Well what if you opponent plays something else? He admits, that "c5" isn't even the best move, but this is the only move he talks about. What about "Bf5"? What should you do then? Then he plays out whole annotated game between Tal-Botvinnik. Why it's a book about openings?
He should spend more time talking about different variations of openings and/or potential traps and less time analyzing entire games. If you are buying for a beginner, it could be considered, but otherwise, get Modern Chess Openings or Nunn's Chess Openings.
Excellent reference book - must have.......2003-01-26
This is a "must-have" for those who are striving to get into the 1000~1500 rating (USCF rating) range. This serves as a good reference and many variations are reviewed and discussed. After he gives the moves for several variations, he gives us an analysis which is benefitial to your game in chess. Many of the openings in this book may not be used commonly - that's why it is helpful surprising your opponent in which moves you play in the opening. It is worth your expense.
Enjoyable thou not a must have.......2001-12-31
I have been going through this book recently while looking for some new openings to try out. Schiller does a good job of showing the openings that World Champions like to play, and shows some nice sample games from each of the openings.
One thing that I like about the book is that you can go through each of the games, and get a point of how the openings work, and what the main purpose is without having to look at a ton of variations, which (for me at least) often leads to to forget what was going on in the main game. I was able to go through the games rather quickly and painlessly.
This is a good gentle introduction to the most common openings. I also enjoyed that some non common openings were shown, such as when Tony Miles played 1. ..h6 against 1. e4 against World Champion Anatoly Karpov - and won! This was probably my favorite game in the book.
Schiller writes for Joe Chessplayer the average guy, who is looking to learn more about chess, but not neccessarily be obsessive about it. I think he is very readable. After finishing this book I ordered Standard Chess Openings and Unorthodox Chess Openings from Amazon. I look forward to them.
...
This book is not a must own, like Logical chess move by move, but it is not a waste of money if you are looking to explore some new openings in a painless manner.
A great addition for beginners and tournament players alike!.......2000-08-05
A thorough, exemplary work, Schiller expounds on the essential openings requisite to any blossoming chessplayer's repertoire.
There are many great features I find appealing about it.
One, the book is very clear. The book pictorially presents the moves in each of the openings providing the reader with far more than just a tedious list of annotated moves.
In addition, the book is very direct. Instead of trying to explain myriad openings, it qualifies its efforts to concentrate strictly on those openings which are considered the most essential so you don't overwork yourself like a mad man. And moreover, the openings are explained not just move-by-move but also by means of an explanation of the motives and skill factors needed of the chessplayer to successfully execute each opening.
Each opening is presented with de facto games played by leading grandmasters including Fischer, Kasparov, Karpov, etc. The book explicitly identifies where moves by such grandmasters are now obsolete and provides the new theory for each move. Thus, I cannot agree with other reviewers who claim that this book is just a book of games and thereby has no qualifications to instruct. The games were simply implemented to better explain the concept of each opening.
Finally, the book contains graphs of the moves world grandmasters preferred to begin games. For example, about 60% of world chess champions prefer the open game in response to the King's Pawn Opening, 30% the Sicilian Defense, and only 5% each for the Caro-Kahn or French Defense! This statistic as well as many others make this book a fine source for up-and-coming chessplayers. I would highly recommend this book for any chess player at any level of competition as a mentor for general chess opening schemes and strategy.

Great book to read and start your busines........2007-08-25
Many people want to get into real estate but they don't know how to start. This book really helps you with a good start and you will be motivated.
READ BEFORE BUYING -- Excellent info.......2006-11-15
This book has excellent information on real estate, the 40 days to success is spaced out accordingly and offers delightful insights from an investor's point of view on how to flip, how to rent, etc. The main theme of the info is to buy properties cheaply and then find a buyer.
I also bought this book along with Investing Without Losing (ISBN: 0978834607 NOT on amazn, on other stores), which taught me how to buy the properties and find out where to get the buyers within a week.
This is a call to action.......2006-10-11
This is a great call to action for those of us that have analysis paralysis. You will either take action or throw this book across the room. I recently returned from a Robert Allen Enlightened Wealth Retreat where I met several, and I mean more than a few dozen ordinary people that took action. One couple amassed over a million dollars in just 90 days. One couple has made 10 million in Real Estate in the past 3 years. Many folks made over $100k in a few months enough to quit the J.O.B. So this is real stuff my friends, I witnessed it myself.
Real Estate is a numbers game and the close ratio is about 1 out of 10 offers will be accepted. So if you are not making offers every week, you will NEVER SUCCEED. You just have to start somewhere to get comfortable and this book helps.
So "Get 'er Done" with this book all your excuses are taken away.
Another GREAT book Robert!.......2006-09-29
I have enjoyed all nine of your books and give this one 5 stars. I think that this is a must have for all investors or beginners. If you like the down to earth approach that is easy reading for all people you found it in RObert's latest book.
Great Book!.......2005-08-18
I am just getting started in the world of Real Estate Investing and picked up a copy of Roberts book to help get me started. Wow! The knowledge he shares with you is extremely helpful and easy to understand! This book is helping me get my foot in the door...Cant wait to do my fisrt deal! Thanks Robert!
