Art not just for arts' sake.......2001-06-25
In this interesting and enlightening book, Lee Seldes takes us into a world few of us will ever know. Most of us go to museums and enjoy the works, but we never think of the wheeling and dealing behind it. Seldes first shows us the troubled artist, then shows how greedy individuals will do whatever they need to to scam, lie and steal to increase their bank accounts and inflate the prices of the works they own. We see how Kate Rothko, still in school, must fight multi millionaire art dealers and powerful galleries to get what is rightfully hers, and to see that her father's legacy is presented and perserved the way he wanted it to be. If you're a lover of modern art, the works of Mark Rothko or even to a degree a fan of mystery stories, you'll enjoy this book and continue thinking about it long after you've finished reading.
An EXCELLENT book on Mark Rothko!.......1998-05-11
Ms. Seldes has produced a superb book! This is a must read for anyone interested in Mark Rothko, the Matter of Rothko, or the ugly commercial world of art. While her writings on the lawsuits and the cast of characters are somewhat confusing, it's hard to blame the author because the subject matter itself was confusing! The book was almost hard to believe that it was non-fiction! It had all the intrigue of Swiss banks, Concorde jetsetters, the New York art scene, and tax havens like Bahamas and Lichtenstein -- and it all really happened! I congratulate Ms. Seldes on a very strong effort!

Book Description
Few authors are able to capture an honest snapshot of everyday life the way Harvey Pekar can. From ruminations on jazz musicians to back problems and traffic tickets, Pekar writes in a clear, unsentimental voice that not only explores the mundane, but celebrates it as well. This time out, Pekar focuses his sharp literary eye on Robert McNeill, an ordinary man who's lived an extraordinary life. McNeill recounts his time spent as a G.I. in Vietnam, on a tour through that surreal and horrific landscape that even now, thirty years later, we're struggling to define. Unsung Hero is a tale of cynicism and endurance, tempered by McNeill's distinct sense of humor and Pekar's touching wit.
Customer Reviews:
excellent.......2007-06-09
Pekar's early work was outstanding -- and it is good to see that with writing like this, and "Ego and Hubris", he is seeking new ways of expressing his central ideas.
One of his central ideas is intense focus on the everyday, in a kind of Naturalist style, and now he is moving away from recording the inner/outer battles of HIS OWN day to day life -- and looking closer at those around him, other "ordinary" people with stories to tell, in a full length book format.
This is nothing new: Pekar always gave us short, anecdotal one page stories about his workmates -- This book and "Ego and Hubris" differ , however, in that the entire book is devoted to the insights, mistakes, wisdom, saintliness, "devilishness" and foolishness of others, not focussing on Pekar himself at all.
The everyday may be too humdrum, too mundane, too banal for many authors to even consider writing about -- but not for Pekar.
The struggles of every day life, its tragedies, wonders, great characters, annoying characters, high points and low points, are all the very stuff Pekar considers central to a kind of "enlightenment" about the human condition -- In Pekar's literary "universe", bearing with the banal acts as a kind of "opening of doors" to a deeper knowledge of self.
This book concentrates on the life of one of Harvey's workmates, who survived the Vietnam experience. Like many other "ordinary people", society has apparently, considered his experiences to be of little importance,to have little value to speak of.
These are the very people Pekar considers to have something important to say, and the book records the central character's struggles through high school years, onto his mistakes in love, and onto his experiences on the battle field.
A great book in the Chekovian tradition, with a little Raymond Carver influence too, perhaps.
Crumb and Pekar still rule the graphic novel field, as this book shows -- essential reading for readers of short stories and comics everywhere.
Comics have been in decline now for about a decade, recycling old ideas and packaging them as the new, often relying on poor, shallow stories, hiding behind attractive packaging and design.
In the face of such a decline,Harvey just gets better.
In my view, for the LONG TERM readers of Pekar this is a better purchase than "The Quitter", which recycles older ideas from his earlier works.
A soldier's story.......2003-10-15
Harvey Pekar has done it again. He tells the story of Robert McNeill, who was a black teenaged Marine in Vietnam. Harvey uses McNeill's own words to convey the frequent horrors, and infrequent pleasures, of being in the Vietnam War. The story is ably illustrated by David Collier in stark black and white. Robert McNeill may have been just another marine, but Harvey Pekar has a gift for making ordinary life seem extraordinary, and he succeeds again here.
Book Description
A former nursing professor writes about her students with affection and humor. She introduces the reader to her favorite patients, the ones whose struggles with mental illness, inspired and illustrated her lectures for a quarter of a century. Hardesty's own experience as a mature returning student should encourage those who seek furthur education.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious!.......2007-04-17
I bought this for my wife, who is an advanced practice nurse. She loved it, and so did her nurse buddies.
Not really what I expected.......2005-07-28
From the title and description, I was under the impression that the book was full of "nursing student tales" told by the students themselves. Basically, nursing students sharing their clinical experiences: the good, bad, and the ugly, and how they got through nursing school. I wanted validation, encouragement, things like that. I wanted to say, "that happened to me" and to be reminded of my own experiences.
But it's a nursing instructor telling stories about students and staff from her point of view as instructor. It wasn't quite what I expected, and it isn't as interesting as I thought it would be. It isn't horrible, but it isn't wonderful either.
I expected a good read, a book that I couldn't put down. I had a hard time picking this book up. I got bored.
If you want to read stories about nurses and their experiences as RNs, I'd suggest "Tending Lives" by Echo Heron.

Customer Reviews:
Not Enough Stars.......2007-05-03
Au contraire, the book is extremely detailed and makes use of all the letters that Lawrence Harvey wrote his family. Anne Sinai reads between the lines and shows us that Harvey was indeed pretended to have been known as "Larushka" as a child, but he dared not sign letters to his family with that endearing diminutive, because he made it all up, God knows why.
His ambition and his sexual predilections made him frantic to be loved, and the early part of the book, where he leaves SA and goes to London to find work is quite moving in its clear-eyed case study of a young man on the make. No wonder he did so well, later on, playing Joe Lapmton in ROOM AT THE TOP. Joe's ambition and lying ways could have been patterned on Harvey's life. He seems to have been attracted to a, cute guys, b, older rich guys, and then c, older women who were fair and severe with him, just as his mother was. His marriage to Margaret Leighton is finally explained in several incisive Sinai chapters here, as well as his long term love affair with the much older soubrette Hermione Baddeley. When he became an international star with ROOM AT THE TOP, he just seemed to live more frantically, perhaps because he was under increased scrutiny and could now only rarely have a "night out with the boys."
James Woolf, the bouyant film producer who took Harvey under his wing and made him a huge success by careful placement, flying him to Hollywood over and over again until Warner took an option, winds up as the hero of the book, the one man who never let his boy down, and whose death spelled the end of Harvey's brief stardom. Sinai tells us innumerable anecdotes about the stars Harvey was involved with, but even more tantalizing are her accounts of the movies he wound up abandoning, including one which would have cast him as the man torn between Lana Turner (!) and Jennifer Jones (!!!!), a hot seat if ever there was one.
Highly recommended even though, once he becomes a star, Sinai rushes through the remainder of his career as though the house was on fire and she had to finish the book quickly to get a pail of water. He was so great--or so bad--that he deserves a slower pace, something more Mediterranean, not this Coney Island roller coaster of a climax.
Love the Actor - Hate the book.......2006-02-13
I was very happy to see a book about one of my favorite movie actors.
It was maddening that it was written by his siter-in-law, who obviously has an ax-to grind.
You might get the facts, but not the truth from this "Biography"
See his movies instead of paying for this junk, as I have.
Room at the Top, Manchurian Candidate, Summer and Smoke etc.
It is odd that she does not reveal the nature of her relationship to LH in the narritive----
I suggest reading it if you would like to know names dates etc., but do not expect a balanced insightful portrayal of an artist, that this author probably was resentful of.
Wonderfully researched book about a faded star.......2004-03-19
I first came across Laurence Harvey in the early '90s, when my seventh grade history class was shown John Wayne's "The Alamo". He was playing Col. William Barret Travis, and I remember thinking, "Wow! He's pretty good." It was some years later that I encountered "The Manchurian Candidate". Again, I was struck by how well Harvey handled the role, this time of a brainwashed assassin. He now seems to be almost a one-hit wonder (he was nominated for an Oscar only once, for "Room at the Top").
This biography by Anne Sinai, Harvey's sister-in-law, reveals a great deal about his brief but unquestionably "colorful" life. While it is interesting to see how he rose up from an obscurity in a Jewish community in South Africa, it is also easy to see why many people who worked with him ended up severely disliking him. His personality (especially in his early life) was a mixture of cut-throat ambition and downright arrogance, and he was known for leading a very extravagant lifestyle. But on the flip side, he also could be funny, generous, and caring. And there's no denying he had talent. The irony lies in the fact that, despite striving for the top, he never really managed to stake his claim there.
The book is fairly long and isn't a light read, but it is very well researched and written. I would have liked more information about his experiences working on a few films--namely "The Alamo"; Col. Travis will always remain my favorite of his roles--but Sinai provides a good chunck of information nonetheless. For those who are interested in the olden days of Hollywood stars, or (like me) are interested in an actor the world seems to have forgotten, then this book is worth your while.

Now, these same truths are delivered to millions of eager readers with the added kick of Chandler's trademark lively and entertaining writing style and powerful self-motivational tools. This book tells you not only how to guarantee that your business will be profitable, but also how to motivate yourself each day to do it!
Steve Chandler is one of America's best-selling authors whose eight booksincluding the bestsellers 100 Ways to Motivate Yourself and Reinventing Yourselfhave been translated into more than 11 languages. Every Business Owner Should Read.......2007-01-16
Absolutely a must read for a small business owner. It will make you rethink things.
Give your Business a Chance by Reading this Book!.......2006-09-18
I know, I know; you are downtrodden and are frustrated with your business. You try everything, lowering your prices, advertising and nothing seems to work. I tell you, I'm in that same spot, but I am climbing out of that hole and I'm going to make a difference thanks to this book.
I was wandering aimlessly through a bookstore, a bit down about my failing business. I randomly came across this book, "9 Lies...". Since I like to know the truth, I figured knowing what the lies are would be helpful to me.
Boy, was I right.
I sat down in the store and read the first chapter. I was completely humiliated and deeply offended by the first chapter: "I just need to know how to do this." I thought, honestly, that it was right on, that it wasn't a lie. Steve and Sam basically tell you, point blank, that it isn't that simple. It's not about the "how". It is about the "want". We as small business owners have to be OWNERS. We have to WANT to make it succeed. That means putting aside any ego or pride and putting our greatest talents forward.
I left the book at the store, to punish it of course, for offending me. As I mulled it over, I knew it was right. I also knew these crazy authors might be able to help me. It was worth a try; what I had been doing up to that point wasn't working.
This book is worth every penny. You will be embarrassed reading it, but do not worry, so were all of us brave enough to read it. I truly believe if we apply these techniques to our businesses, there is no stopping us. But, you have to do everything DIFFERENTLY. Probably everything you've learned? Unlearn it. NOW. I'm already seeing a difference in my business and I just did a few changes. I need to give this 150% and see what happens. You do too. We all deserve to have successful, thriving businesses.
Thanks Steve and Sam.
Annie Bathgate
antiquated marketing thoughts.......2006-08-18
I heard this author on a financial radio talk show (Bob Brinker) and the few things he had to say were interesting, to the point and powerful enough to make me buy the book. Should have quit with the talk show. If this guy is still building a new and successful business with flyers and Magic Marker posters he should read a little Ries & Trout or Seth Goodin (Purple Cow). We ARE in the 21st Century. We have the internet along with carefully focused radio and myriad other ways to reach people and mold thinking. There was nothing in the book that was not merely a stone cold rehash of old, old thinking. I was very disapointed. B. McDonald
A Whole Bunch of Great Business Concepts Boiled down to a few Hundred Pages.......2006-07-29
This book is packed with great concepts that the authors have learned the hard way. It is nice of them to offer their experiences for us to learn from. Here are few that I would like to remember.
"Nothing great was ever created without enthusiasm." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
"The word enthusiasm comes from the Greek "en theos" which means "the god within" which is the level you need to play at to win big"
"The whole concept of succeeding versus not succeeding is a result of thinking versus not thinking. Anything that stops you from thinking and gives you a vacation from creative thought and innovative ideas is going to harm your business."
This is a concept I always try to remember, and it is very very hard:
"Ask yourself this question about all your daily efforts: Is this something that leads me to greater profits?"
In other words, it's more important to work smart than to work hard. The authors explain how most business owners operate at the, "busy is better" level, while they may be working really hard their way be way more productive ways to spend their time.
Another great concept is, "Time is the new money". They talk about how important it is to "work on your business rather than working in it" going as far as saying that victims work in their businesses while owners work on it.
And some quotes on time management that I would like to remember:
"Start by doing what's necessary, then what's possible, and suddenly your doing the impossible." - St. Francis of Assisi
"Learn to use ten minutes intelligently. It will pay you huge dividends." - William A. Irwin
"You will never `find' time for anything, if you want time you must make it." - Charles Buxton
"You have more to do than you can possibly do. You just need to feel good about your choices." - David Allen
