5 out of 5 stars A Sort of a Saga is the funniest book ever written!.......2007-01-06

The first time I read A Sort of a Saga was about 15 years ago. I cannot remember laughing that hard at a book before or since. If I could I would give the reader a "thirty day money back guarantee" that he will belly laugh, lose his breath, shed tears of laughter, and drive other people around his laughter, crazy because the reader will not be able to relay the reason for the laughter. Honestly!
The author, Bill Mauldin was loved by the troops during WWII. He drew popular cartoons for them, but here he writes about his strange childhood.
This book is one of my treasures.

I enjoyed this book, the story of a family that wanted to grow citrus in New Mexico. They lived in hard times and also adventurous times. I enjoyed the part of the boys playing tricks on the constable, and the skunk musk on the manifold. I also enjoyed the tobacco shortage because of the flood. It was a long time ago, but I would like to read it again.

                    Book Description

An extremely rare and conspicuous find of oriental riding costumes in the late antique necropolis of Antinoopolis (Middle Egypt) brought together a number of specialists piecing together their evolution and historical context.

The first part deals with the evolution and distribution of the oriental riding costume in the Middle and Near East through the ages and the historical background on the find spot.

The second part focuses on the original costumes in various museum collections including much so far unpublished material, technical researches and reconstructions. Surprising new insights on the social background of their owners has been obtained by carefully studying and piecing together the finding context. Also the representations of riding costumes in and on different monuments are carefully examined. The book is richly illustrated with colour and black and white plates.

                    Book Description

In celebration of its 65th anniversary, the House of Ideas proudly presents a timeless testament to another true Marvel visionary! In 1961, writer Stan Lee penned Fantastic Four #1, an historic issue unlike any comic book that had come before. This super-hero team had true personalities - they doubted their own abilities, battled problems of money and illness, and even fought among themselves. The monumental popularity of this realistic comic-book style inspired Lee to create similarly themed titles - including Hulk, X-Men, and Avengers with artist Jack Kirby; and Amazing Spider-Man with artist Steve Ditko. By 1965, Lee had successfully established Marvel Comics as a cohesive universe populated by world-famous comic-book characters. Now, this deluxe keepsake edition collects his greatest moments - some never before reprinted: "Captain America Foils the Traitor's Revenge" (Captain America Comics #3): Stan's first story, a two-page text piece! "The Red Skull's Deadly Revenge" (Captain America Comics #16): The defining Golden Age Red Skull story! "The Raving Madman" (Suspense #29): Stan's satire on Frederick Wertham and the comics witch hunts of the '50s! "Your Name Is Frankenstein!" (Menace #7): A modern Frankenstein story, featuring many of the elements of the later Marvel books! "Where Walks the Ghost" (Amazing Adult Fantasy #11): A short, twist-ending story by Lee and Ditko! Plus: "Spider-Man" (Amazing Fantasy #15); "A Visit With the Fantastic Four" (Fantastic Four #11); "How Stan and Steve Create Spider-Man" (Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1); "In Mortal Combat with Sub-Mariner" (Daredevil #7); "The Final Chapter" (Amazing Spider-Man #33); "Bedlam in the Baxter Building" (Fantastic Four Annual #3); "And Who Shall Mourn for Him?" (Silver Surfer #5); "Brother, Take My Hand" (Daredevil) #47; "And Now, The Goblin," "In the Grip of the Goblin," and "The Goblin's Last Stand" (from Amazing Spider-Man #96-98); "No Longer Alone" (Captain America #110); "No More the Thunder God," "When Gods Go Mad," and "One God Must Fall" (from Thor #179-181); "While the World Spins Mad" (Marvel Premiere #3); and "The Circle of Life" (Spectacular Spider-Man Super-Special 1995)!

                    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic & MARVELOUS.......2005-12-31

                    (REVIEW WRITTEN BY BILLY INNES)

For the generations whose first exposure to stellar comic-book writing came from reading the likes of Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, the Hernandez Brothers or Art Spiegelman, then Stan Lee might seem a bit wooden or stilted by comparison. Still, it is pretty important to remember that many of the fine writers listed above may not have ever written a word for comic-books if not for the ground-breaking innovations brought forth by Stan Lee.

During the height of the "Marvel Wars"...when the artists who had worked for Marvel (including such greats as Jack "King" Kirby) were fighting to get their original artwork (a way of generating extra revenue for these artists is to sell their original penciled pages)...there was much criticism hurled towards Stan Lee. Criticism towards Stan Lee regarding his business practices...after all, it was Lee who failed to relinquish access to the Marvel artists' original artwork...may have been justified. In the midst of that controversy, though, came criticism aimed at Lee regarding his writing abilities. Rumors began to spread that Lee seldom fully scripted or plotted a full issue of the comic books that bore his name. Some rumors went so far as to claim that Stan Lee could not write a complete sentence in English to save his life.

All one needs to do is look at other of the books in the MARVEL VISIONARIES series to dispel such rumors. Granted, Stan Lee was often as good as those with whom he collaborated (and with artists such as Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and Wally Wood...just to name a few of many greats...one could not ask for finer artists) and, without a doubt, such artists were often elemental in helping Lee with plotting and pathos. Still, if one looks at the MARVEL VISIONARIES book devoted to the work of Jack Kirby, one notices that the finest stories are those where Kirby is given the credit as artist and Lee is given the credit as writer. When Kirby is credited as writer (issue 200 of CAPTAIN AMERICA or the issue of THE ETERNALS), the art remains majestic, but the writing is stiff and wooden. In other cases...such as Kirby's "What If" take on what life would be like if the Fantastic Four were the Marvel Bullpen, the writing is downright cringe-worthy.

The collection devoted to Stan Lee is probably the finest of the MARVEL VISIONARIES series. Much of this is due to our being able to see Lee's development as a writer (going from one-dimensional stories from Marvel's Golden Age to stories of great might and power as represented by the DAREDEVIL and SILVER SURFER issues included in this collection). And, of course, another joy of this book is being able to feast one's eyes on the wide range of talent that comes from the palette of wonderful artists who laid pencil to paper for Marvel.

As one who remembers many of these issues when they first appeared, reading this volume was much like a happy trip back in a Time Machine. It brings to mind the days when I found the soap-opera-like story of a superheroes true identity to be every bit as engaging (if not more so) than the grandiose battles of good versus evil. It brings back memories of story-lines that crossed over various comic-book titles, so that one had the feeling that the Marvel Universe really existed on some other plain (all one need do is read the titles from DC titles...or the lesser Charleston or Dell to see how profound this method was). Lee elevated many of the characters from cardboard caricatures and breathed life and believability into them. Sure, they've probably not aged as well as our imaginations remember many of these comic-books and characters, but they still are often breathtakingly a wonder to behold when one considers just how innovative and revolutionary these works were!

In celebration of its 65th anniversary, the House of Ideas proudly presents a timeless testament to another true Marvel visionary! Best known as the first artist to bring Spider-Man to life in the pages of Amazing Fantasy, Steve Ditko illustrated Amazing Spider-Man for four years - helping create characters such as Doctor Octopus, the Lizard, the Vulture, and dozens more of Spider-Man's classic villains. In contrast to the grounded realism of Spider-Man, Ditko also drew the adventures of Doctor Strange, a master of the mystic arts who defended Earth's citizens from bizarre otherworldly threats. Now, this deluxe keepsake edition collects his greatest moments. Stories from Tales To Astonish #26, 42; Strange Tales #94, 97, 110, 115, 126-127; 146; Amazing Adult Fantasy #7, 10, 12-13; Amazing Spider-Man #1, 31-33, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1; Hulk #6, 249; Tales Of Suspence #48, Daredevil #162; MSHS, Speedball #1.

3 out of 5 stars Not a good enough collection............2007-02-05

I agree with some of the other reviews. Ditko really shines on his Spider-Man and Doctor Strange work, along with his weird menace tales for Atlas. The Hulk and Daredevil stories here were rather dull and not representative of his best work.

Someone should collect all his monster stories and weird tales. His independent work, too.

3 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Weird and Wonderful..........2005-12-31

At his best, Steve Ditko's artwork was initially deceivingly pedestrian...only to later take the reader through twists and turns into wonderfully strange and haunting worlds. While the likes of Jack Kirby made everything grandiose and larger than life, much of Ditko's charm was his knack for being able to take the most mundane situations and render them with an artist's eye than seldom failed to captivate the reader. This collection assembles some of the best examples of Ditko's brilliantly bizzare worlds, jettisoned, no doubt, by some incredible scripts as penned by Stan Lee. The only drawback to this collection is found towards the end of this collection. Here we see the magic all but gone in stories such as "The Coming of the Squirrel Girl"...a dismal work that could not be salvaged by an artist at his very peak (let alone one who is headed towards a downward spiral). Still, the middle section of this book...with wonderful stories from SPIDERMAN and DOCTOR STRANGE...make this a beautiful collection and a fitting tribute to one of comic-book's true masters!!!

3 out of 5 stars beautiful, but frustrating.......2005-05-30

A beautiful but frustrating book. Ditko left a deep impression on me when I was young, and his work is one of the things from my youth that I still enjoy greatly now that I'm deep into middle age. The layout of this book-- the size of the panels, the color, and so on-- is better than the original comics were.

But it's a Ditko sampler-- bits and pieces from various phases of his Marvel career, hard to settle into when you get past the early Twilight Zoney-type-material (which is great).

The effect of Ditko, in Dr. Strange and Spiderman especially, was cumulative, so these cherry-picked selections are ultimately frustrating for me.

Also: after the first half, or maybe 3/5, we begin to see an altered style, I suppose under pressure, and I suppose this is the reason why Ditko left Marvel, but the later pages of the book are just sad for me, when I think about what he might have been able to achieve if he'd been left alone. Whereas Steranko and Kirby blossomed during this period, Ditko was obviously being asked (or required) to do something contrary to his distinctive vision.

I've seen things he's drawn since he left-- for example, "Steve Ditko's 160 Page Package" (1999)-- and it's visually true to the early Dr. Strange and Spider-Man.

It's clear to me that it was all about integrity for him.

I've ordered the Marvel Masterworks Dr. Strange vol 1.via e-bay, also available w/o color, "the Essential Dr. Strange."

I got this book for my fiance' and placed it strategically on the back of his toilet. He has confessed to having read every page!! It is easy to pick up and read any section, and its advice is sweet and thoughtful. it is a great conversation starter!!

4 out of 5 stars authentic, cute, and surprisingly wise.......2004-03-16

"The Husband Book" would make a good gift for your mate, ladies. It's a quick read, with one maxim per page. You can read it before you present it to him, and put a star by the advice that is most pertinent!

Probably not all of the sage advice will apply to your marriage---each one is different, after all--but there is a generous supply of common-sense adages that you are sure to find meaningful. (It can be astonishingly refreshing to realize how many of us share the same problems, misunderstandings, and communication failures!)

This book will make you both smile, and you may find some healing touches in its pages, as well. Recommended.

If only every husband would pick up this little jewel and read it we'd all be happier campers. Mr. Harrison's wife is a lucky lady.

5 out of 5 stars All husbands should read this!.......2002-06-22

Straightforward, funny and so true! Every husband should keep this book handy for a daily reminder. I gave The Husband Book as a gift to a new groom, but also plan on giving it to my in-laws who've been married for decades. It covers all the bases.

5 out of 5 stars Wish my ex-husband had read it!.......2002-05-16

Mr. Harrison's book was witty, fun and SOOOO true! I'm sure his wife appreciates his love for her! The book was full of very true insights that were hopefully not too hard earned! Mr. Harrison made me laugh out loud and repeatedly reminded me that perhaps there are sensitive men out there in the world! I also read his book, "Father to Son," another extremely insightful book on raising boys. As a single mother of two teenage boys, I think Mr. Harrison is right on track. His words hit home in both books. I plan on giving these books as gifts to all soon-to-be or new husbands and/or fathers of boys. The books will make you laugh at his wit, sigh at his insights and make you wish he held seminars for husbands and fathers alike! Great books! Fun reading!

4 out of 5 stars Short and Sweet.......2005-03-29

This is an excellent book for those who want a snappy and accurate summary review of the book's reception and the associated films'impact.Enables a synoptic overview and a gives an indication of the cultural climate at the time of the book's writing and the films being first distributed.

                    3 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2001-11-27

Like other reviewers, I bought this without actually looking at it and I agree that it could have been done much better. It's a very good idea which seems to have fallen down in the execution. To the list of serious omissions I would add: The Ice Storm, The Godfather (!!) Rosemary's Baby, Midnight Cowboy, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Primary Colours, Lady In The Lake, Fear & and Loathing in Las Vegas (if we are talking about Hollywood here.) National cinemas other than American are very poorly represented. The book does acknowledge that it's the 'abridged' edition, and I would not have liked to have to choose what went in and what got left out, but still. The individual essays vary a great deal in usefulness and quality, with some being really very good and others abysmal. In future editions I would like to see more attention given to non-US filmmaking.

1 out of 5 stars Great idea gone terribly awry.......2001-03-02

Well, it was a good idea, but...There are far too many omissions to make this book worthwhile. I can understand why genre novels made into genre films could be excluded--after all, how many people know or care that SOYLENT GREEN was based on a Harry Harrision novel titled MAKE ROOM, MAKE ROOM? Or that the movie COP was based on James Ellroy's BLOOD ON THE MOON? Or that DARK OF THE SUN was based on a Wilbur Smith novel of the same name? But at the same time, how could the authors of NOVELS INTO FILM fail to make reference to Lew Wallace's BEN-HUR? Or Howard Fast's SPARTACUS? Or Jack D. Hunter's THE BLUE MAX? Or Eugene Burdick's and Harvey Wheeler's FAIL-SAFE? Or Pierre Boulle's PLANET OF THE APES and THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI? Or Edison Marshall's THE VIKINGS? Or choose to talk about a failed Richard Matheson adaptation like WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, but leave out THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN? Or forget to include..well, never mind. The list of omissions goes on. Yet the above works were all major mainstream novels of their eras, novels that were made into much-beloved and/or critically-acclaimed movies. These novels into films should have been included--especially since the authors of this so-called "Encylopedia" saw fit to pencil in adaptations of currently-popular--but hardly literary--authors such as Stephen King and John Grisham. I bought the book sight unseen--more fool me. I was cheated. Don't get cheated yourself.

                    3 out of 5 stars Film Primer.......2000-09-10

It is interesting if you like to read. It is also interesting to see how what were once thought as interesting and new stories are old, recycled from novels that few knew existed.

2 out of 5 stars Great idea; poorly executed.......2000-09-05

Being more of a "browser book," I did not feel the need to read the entire thing to get a glimpse into its quality. Instead, I read its comparisons of three novel-film counterparts in which I was especially familiar--_Frankenstein_, _Jurassic Park_, and _The Wonderful Wizard of Oz_. None of these comparisons contained much substance and were frequently loaded with factual errors. At least the writer of the Oz essay was familiar with Baum's other works, although there many factual errors about them, including the first, as there were for _Frankenstein_ and _Jurassic Park_. The comparisons were very simplistic, and the Oz entry in particular argued for the superiority of the film to the novel, referring mainly to another essay to explain why. While even the best argument probably could not convince me, if it had been better thought out I could at least understand why the writer felt that way. Alas, I could not, as so much of the argument was based on severe factual errors suggesting a very poor memory of the literary counterpart. The Oz entry even cited the Henry Littlefield Populism analogy as fact, despite Littlefield retraction and strong evidence about L. Frank Baum to the contrary.

Using only three entries may seem an unfair litmus test for the book, but my justification is as follows: if the books I'm familiar with are discussed with gross errors about the facts of the texts, how am I supposed to know that other essays, for films and novels I am not familiar with, don't contain erroneous junk that negate their usefulness?

I would love to see a new edition of the book with much more well-thought out essays. Granted, this is published as a "popular" text, but even a popular text should be credible, and this, alas, isn't.

                        Book Description

How one tough cop became one tough businessman.

Bo Dietl is a legend in the New York City Police Department. His hardheaded attitude and never-give-up ethic of crime fighting earned him a reputation as a man to be respected-and not to be taken lightly. After retiring from the force in 1985, Dietl went into business for himself as a security consultant and built an international company worth millions. Here, in his own inimitable style, Bo Dietl shows how, through smart networking, anyone can make it just as big as he did.

Using examples from his own vast experience in dealing with business friends and foes in a variety of situations-including his "lunchatation situations," where personal connections and opportunity can come together in any setting-Dietl tells how knowing what to say, how to say it, when to say it, and who to say it to can count more than anything when it comes to success in the winner-take-all arena of big business.

                        5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-12-09

I purchased this book when it first came out but had not gotten around to reading it until now. I was a little suprised by some of the negative comments. I think this book delivers exactly what the title indicates. How a regular guy was able to use common sense and natural charisma to become a success. It reminded me of a lot of the conversations I had with my family growing up in NYC. In my opinion it fills a valuable niche and is worth a read.

                        3 out of 5 stars Colorful Figure.......2005-12-30

In 16 years, Bo Dietl made 1,400 felony arrests with a 95% conviction rate - the average NYPD cop made 120 in the same time period. While working as a decoy he was mugged over 500 times, and hospitalized in over 30 instances. Dietl made little headway in the NYPD hierarchy, based on his distaste for taking written exams that focused on paperwork and were the primary province of those assigned to desk jobs so they would have time to study. Regardless, after injuring an ankle skydiving, he chose retirement rather than a desk job, and began a career as a private security expert and investigator, with his own company.

Dietl has several lists of "how to succeed," starting with being well-dressed and in excellent physical condition - both build confidence and impress people,

Other suggestions include set deadlines, don't go for perfection (eg. the last 10% takes too long), don't focus on being an innovator, and do work you enjoy. Networking is also stressed - pick up the check, start conversations, look for wallflowers rather than butt in on on-going conversations, and make notes about those you meet. Success on the job benefits from perseverance, asking for more work, taking on different work, thinking big, having an interest in people, and careful listening.

Nothing earth-shaking, but interesting nonetheless as a quick one-hour read - primarily for the mini-stories of Bo's accomplishments as a cop. However, I would not spend $15 or so on it.

1 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money.......2005-09-12

The book does cover some business relationship basics. But, it has been covered in many other books and nothing new was received from reading this book.

The book came with a CD. The CD was poorly made. Too bad I listened to the CD first. It gave me a bad first impression and that may have carried over to reading the book.

The book did not keep my attention. I have three types of books. There are those that I can't put down. There are others that I throw away after the first 100 pages. And, there are those that I read a little every day when I am on the stationary bike at the gym. This was a bike read because I couldn't handle it for too long.

                        4 out of 5 stars Common sense.......2005-09-07

Network, network, network... reinforcement of the old way to suceed in business. Good reinforcement of that rule.

                        1 out of 5 stars A Joke.......2005-08-16

Bo's way of doing business may work in NYC, but in the rest of the country you would be laughed out of the room. What a joke. Some of his great advice is to: wear a fine watch(it's a sign of success),Clean. Shower daily. Use deoderant and cologne. I cant believe I wasted my money on this one.
