Book Description
The international supermodel and actor details his rise to fame in the fashion world and reveals for the first time the truth about his stormy, passionate, and now famous relationship with Carolyn Bessette.
This is the story of a small–town kid who moved to the big city, fell in love with a beautiful, mysterious woman, and found himself in competition with the most eligible bachelor in the world, John F. Kennedy Jr.
Now, for the first time, Michael Bergin reveals the truth behind a life lived in the limelight and a relationship shrouded in secrecy. From his early days growing up in a small blue–collar Connecticut town, to his meteoric rise as fashion icon and television star, to the passion he shared with the enigmatic and complex Carolyn Bessette, this is an inside look at the world of beauty, power, and celebrity.
In 1992, Michael and Carolyn met in a bar in New York City. She was unlike any woman he had ever known–sophisticated, successful, with bewitching charm and grace. An intensely passionate relationship was born. Not long after, Michael landed the coveted Calvin Klein underwear campaign, and his career took off. The future looked bright, and Carolyn and Michael seemed destined for a long and happy life together.
But it was not to be. Four years later Michael was an international fashion icon and Carolyn was Mrs. John F. Kennedy Jr.–however, the story doesn't end there. This is the truth about their lives, a tale full of warmth, humour, heartbreak, and tragedy.
Above all, The Other Man is a testament to the enduring power of love and a story about the painful choices we make with our all–too–human hearts.

When a Man Loves a Woman....................2007-07-16
This book, to me, was not all that bad. I get tickled by the people who said "Well, Michael Bergin sure isn't a writer." No joke - he is a model.
I found this book refreshing in the fact that it was about a man pining after a woman. How often do you see that? All in all, I didnt think his writing was all that bad either. This book focuses on the relationship between Calvin Klein model Michael Bergin, and Carolyn Bessette (who ended up marrying John Kennedy, Jr, which eventually resulted in her untimely death since he was not as experienced at flying as he thought he was). There are parts of this book that are gut-wrenching and you can almost feel Bergin's pain as you read about how Bessette worked him like a "marionette", pulling his strings...pushing him away only to eventually pull him back closer. Although he says the book was to defend her, it just doesn't leave a very good image of her (3 abortions later) and bouncing between her husband's bed and her lovers bed.
If this book is true, I feel bad for Carolyn who obviously was looking for the happiness I dont think she ever found......and never will.
me, carolyn, and john f. kennedy.......2007-05-18
i bought this book about two years ago i never got to it until few weeks ago, and once i started i jusy could`nt put the book down not until i was forced by time.
the author is honest, and his heart and feeling are right there you can actually feel it. whoever claims tyhis is a poorly written book, i guess he never read anything written with a full heart (for example: "a royal duty" by paul burrell, the late princess diana`s butler).
Interesting.......2006-08-14
I usually don't read this type of book, but did purchase it and set it aside. I must admit that it was very interesting, although poorly written. For those who wrote reviews decrying his disloyalty, well, she wasn't that loyal either. Her name was CAROLYN not CAROLINE, Caroline is JFK, Jr's sister. I have read All that Remains, by Carol DeFalco Radziwill, and the personality that she describes Carolyn to have had is similar to Michael's description. I have never heard of him and really don't care what he has done to make a living. I believe Carolyn was neurotic and strange in many ways. She, also, must have had a very attractive side to her. I never saw her as "beautiful", but, obviously, others did. Including the author. It reads fast and it holds your attention. Certainly, not a must read, but entertaining.
Honest and Refreshing.......2006-07-12
Well, in reference to all of the people saying that Carolyn is not alive to defend herself-I didn't see too much in the book that really attacked her! It is evident to the last page that he was, and always will be, in awe of this woman(misguided as that may have been)! I don't see what all the fuss about her was, she was okay but not a supermodel or anything!! He really was in love with her! And that is sad, because if the account MB gave in this book about the mental torture he went through is true, then Carolyn was action-packed with issues. Anyone who has been in a relationship, or wanted to be in a relationship that ended up one-sided can attest to the mental torment you go through. This book is a horror story for those that have been there and done that. I just wonder if his poor wife is always living in the shadow of Carolyn, if he is always measuring her by the other woman because his obsession with Carolyn is probably still there. But anyway, this book is good because I really believe that this is how he thought the situation was. If it wasn't, he would try to make himself out to be much more macho. And about all the flings he had, sometimes when you are rebounding and hurt, you will do crazy things. I applaud his effort, and really liked this book.
I commend him!.......2006-06-14
The Other Man is a great book and a quick read. You continue to read and want to know what else is going to happen. The book is quite entertaining, but also leaves you with a respectable and sincere feeling from both sides.
Michael Bergin allows you to feel his ups and downs with Caroline. I hold much compassion for him. He was in a controlling relationship due to feelings. Feelings are stronger than people can imagine. He does personify Caroline as being a control freak, but that was the way she was able to lead the double life she held. This relationship took on a life of its own due to her power. Michael allowed her to control him more than he thought. He should be proud for all of his accomplishments, and yes she had a lot to do with it. He needed molding and he allowed himself to get molded by her. That's what happens when you are young and learning. He learned from her and she learned from him. It is all part of a growing relationship, although it ended. Like she said everything good has to end. Impact is what she left behind.
Overall, I feel compassion and lots of sadness for Michael Bergin. He led a life of hope. Hope that he could be with his soul mate. He honestly had so much respect for her when in return she didn't realize what she had. Caroline toyed with many emotions and that is a hard thing to take. I commend Michael. It takes strength to write and tell your story. He put his heart down on the table, although it was after her death. I believe he did it in a way that showed true love. He never degraded her, but showed much respect to her.
Book Description
Men are the in the dark about their clothes, that's not news. Few know how to dress well and there doesn't seem to be anyone they can look to for advice. Yesterday, young men learned about style from their fathers; today, no one really wants to dress lik his father. So who do men look up to? Whom do they admire and want to emulate? Is there a man who doesn't identify with the power and charisma of John Travolta, Sean Penn, or Steve McQueen? This book looks at the stars of the screen for common sense examples of how to dress comfortably and stylishly. From the sporting life to formal occasions, from macho tough guys to urbane sophisticates, nearly every social situation and character type has been portrayed on screen in an eye-catching way. A unique guide, Dressing In The Dark gives men practical advice about clothes and character, shedding light on the sartorial secrets of the most stylish stars from the twenties up to the present.

A good idea gone awry.......2005-01-31
Certainly the concept of this book is intriguing, as I'm sure many of us have unforgettable images emblazoned in our memories of Sinatra strolling around "Oceans Eleven" nattily dressed in a pastel cardigan and tight slacks, of Sean Connery dispatching cold war baddies and martinis in a white dinner jacket or of Alain Deleon pulling off impossibly dangerous heists with nothing but tough guy bravado, a Gitane, and a dirty t-shirt. Perhaps you'd like to know how they look so cool, so charming, so tough? Well, Marion Maneker doesn't know either (or he just refuses to tell.) His selection of icons included is sometimes silly, sometimes baffling (I'm not sure he could fawn any more over the impossibly dull Gary Cooper and what kind of "lesson" does a picture of a shirtless Steve McQueen in nothing but boxer shorts and a tie around his neck provide?) While the list of those excluded would actually make a better book (Where's Peter O'Toole for instance?) Even more disconcerting are the clothes he features as a suggestion for approximating the actors sense of style. For instance, he shows a picture of Brad Pitt in "Fight Club" and then on the facing page features a white collared shirt and gold tie draped over a pair of purple, floral printed pants which he claims will give you a "tough, in-your-face attitude." I'm sure the Hells Angels would be trembling. While I agree this is comical, it's a fairly expensive joke when you include shipping costs. On another page he shows a suitcase packed with nothing but white sweaters, white shoes, white pants and white belts (if I remember correctly I think this was supposed to make you a doppelganger for Redford in "The Great Gatsby.") I guess this is fine if you're packing to compete at Wimbledon in the 1920's, if you're someone's guardian angel going to earth, or if you're Tom Wolfe, but with these suggestions the rest of us would surely become walking monuments to absurdity. Thankfully these recommendations are few and far between. By the way, if you think suspender-wearing, greasy haired corporate raider Gordon Gekko from Wall Street was/is the epitomy of style, and who doesn't really, than you're on the same page as Maneker. Congratulations, you're now qualified to write a terrible book. Frankly, the only lesson you're likely to learn is how to convince a local bookstore to exchange a book you bought from Amazon
dressing swellegantly.......2004-03-16
redford as gastby clothed by ralph lauren, and more recently, tom ford, late of gucci, is leaving milan for hollywood. does fashion imitate the movies or vice versa?
the book is a great concept, but it wasnt as exhaustive as it could have been. theres a real emphasis on steve mcqueen and cary grant-but we already knew those men were dapper dressers (does anyone remember adolphe menjou? he was as elegant as could be!). carson kressley was right, this book is a good primer for dressing swellegantly. its printed beautifully, the photos are some ive never seen before-but if youre looking for something a little more in depth regarding movies and american style, page through tommy hilfiger's 'all american'.
A seriously flawed book, but with such potential...........2004-03-08
If you can get beyond the incredibly shoddy editing of this book (for example, the identified Gable is not always Gable), the heavy empahsis on Cooper and other sartorial conservative icons, and the uninspired (repetitive) use of language, you might come away with something useful from this book. In the end, the book's abrupt ending--it just stops--is representative of how its wonderful concept is so very poorly executed. This book never lives up to its potential, and both men's style and the movies deserve more.
Excellent, but not easy..........2004-01-23
Elegant and not superficial book.
Not for everybody but only for style amateur of Hollywood men actors.
Many photos and fine advices.
Because Carson Kressley said it's a good book!.......2003-08-17
I love watching Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. Carson used this book to show a case on how to dress with style via Cary Grant!

Cute Silly Fun.......2005-08-26
This is a fun book, with cute pictures, and a wry sense of humor seen throughout. Buy this as a gift for the guy who is coming out...or for the guy who is long out....or just for anyone who enjoys gay humor.
Get little book to read cover to cover under the covers.......2001-10-09
I found this book on holiday in San Francisco, and loved it so much I brought back to the UK for a friend. It's a great book with good drawings.
A Sexy Little Book!!!.......2001-01-11
This is a little 6" X 6" case-bound book that I bought for myself and now plan on giving as gifts to all my friends. Every gay household should have one on display. What with all the erotic colored drawings that reminded me of Tom of Finland's work, this is a sexy little book. Each letter of the alphabet from A-Z holds the key to hot and funny scenes of gay sex. Maurice Vellekoop is a wonderful artist and has written very funny lines here. I really enjoyed this book. My advise is to get your copy now before you forget & or it goes out of print.
Love this little book!.......2000-08-02
I got this book when I babysitted my friend's pets. I loved that book! It is so cute and farout! Many friends of mine LOVED it and wanted to buy them! Seem that Amazon is only place that I could be able to find this little book. I tried many stores, no luck!

Perfect Overview.......2004-01-17
If I'd had this book before I sold my car, I wouldn't have had my identity stolen. Author John Q gives an overview of identity thieves that lets you know what areas you need to look out for. Also gives you information on the tedious follow up while you try to repair the damage done--who to contact, what to say or write. This is a real good book for the average person who is just trying to protect their privacy. I hope Loompanics has him write more on this subject. I checked with them, but although there is more in the way of privacy books, no other identity theft books come close to this for clear, concise information.
Good for a quick Glance.......2001-08-21
This book very informative in dealing with the identity theft that is present in the US which is what I was interested in. However, I did noticed it was lacking in content when dealing with other countries. For this one needs to apply previous knowledge of local systems to understand what Newman is describing. For anyone interested in Identity theft I recomend this for a once over lightly te get a quich understanding on a large topic. This book is suitable for the general public who may know very little about this crime. However, there really is no new information to be gleaned from the book.
Book Description
Here's Looking at You: Hollywood, Film & Politics examines the tangled relationship between politics and Hollywood, which manifests itself in celebrity involvement in political campaigns and elections, and in the overt and covert political messages conveyed by Hollywood films. The book's findings contradict the film industry's assertion that it is simply in the entertainment business, and examines how, while the majority of Hollywood films are strictly commercial ventures, hundreds of movies-ranging from Birth of a Nation to Fahrenheit 9/11-do indeed contain political messages. Here's Looking at You serves as a basic text for political film courses and as a supplement in American government and film studies courses, and will also appeal to film buffs and people in the film industry.
Book Description
Here's Looking at You examines the relationship between Hollywood films and the world of real politics, from the silent era to the dawn of the new millennium. What is discovered contradicts the film industry's patented response that the only messages its films deliver are messages intended for entertainment. While the vast majority of commercial features are designed to attract a mass audience, Hollywood has produced several hundred films that contain political messages. These range from D. W. Griffith's silent classic, The Birth of a Nation, to recent entries like Wag the Dog, Primary Colors, and Bulworth.
Customer Reviews:
Here's Looking at Ernest Giglio.......2003-01-24
This is a good book. Giglio does a good job of surveying films with political content that were produced or distributed by Hollywood studios since the turn of the century. He has an interesting chapter on the treatment of lawyers in film with some interesting observations about female lawyers. He does a good job of introducing readers to film theories without going into depth. I used it in my undergraduate course on Politics and Film last semester. The students seemed to like it.
Here's Looking at Politics in the Movies.......2001-04-10
Here's Looking at You takes a detailed look at the ever-changing relationship between Hollywood and the political arena. It not only focuses on how Washington affects the films that are made in Hollywood (from the age of the silent films through the end of the 20th century) but also how Hollywood has a certain level of effect on politics and how politics and politicians are viewed by the general public. Giglio uses numerous good examples from popular (and the not-so-popular) films to prove his numerous points. Here's Looking at You is well organized, with sections focusing on the cultural and economic backgrounds for the films made. One of the better and more abundant topics is his look at war, and how Hollywood will either support or deny support in favor of the war effort. Giglio also attemps to explain what it is that makes a film political. Although there is no obvious answer, he does use numerous examples from the media to serve as a basis for comparison. Overall, this book is a teaching tool for the younger generations. Giglio's obvious biased against certain genres or topics in film does make reading a little difficult, but the biased is accepted, if not ignored, for the quality information provided. Here's Looking at You is a fine example of the influence Hollywood has on the world, especially in the political spotlight.

Book Description
Loads of quotes and a trio of puzzle types make this collection challenging fun. All three types involve rearranging letters in a quotation in some fashion, but each has its own particular, artful trick. The wise and witty statements come from such well-known people as Billy Wilder, Tom Stoppard, Winston Churchill, Lou Reed, Benjamin Franklin, and Katharine Hepburn.
The author lives in Brooklyn, NY.
Book Description
In his new edition of When Corporations Rule the World, David Korten updates the reader as to the deepening human crisis of the global economy. The gap between the rich and poor continues to grow, and the planet continues to be exploited. He writes of the new global citizens movement of activism in response to corporate globalization, the efforts of civil society groups to restructure global economic governance and focuses on the role of spirit and culture in a "civil-ized" society.
Customer Reviews:
Most important book out today.......2007-07-31
People need to read Korten because our very future as free human beings is at stake. What he describes is nothing short of a fascistic world system in which huge, private, unaccountable corporations trump nation-states that are at least in part accountable to their citizens.
There is no doubt that the political process has its flaws and that even democratically elected governments can end up being illiberal (see Fareed Zakaria, "The Future of Freedom"), but once the world treaty system and national constitutions and laws are aligned to give the corporate form clear advantages over human rights, it's all over for us. It's vitally important that we not let this happen.
When Corporations Rule the World provides heavily documented evidence that trends are strongly against the survival of the sort of democratic republic that most Americans still think we live under.
I place this book at the top of the reading list that I provide my graduate Economics students.
Pinnacle of Knowledge, Other Books Support the Thesis.......2007-01-29
Others have done well at addressing the strengths of this book, what I can do is bring to bear a few links to other books that deeply support this author and his views.
We must begin in the 1970's, when Richard Barnett in Global Reach and others first began to understand that corporations were amoral, disconnected from communities, and beyond what Kirkpatrick called "human scale." Joining the authors focusing on multinationals as a unique new breed of corporation were authors such as Lionel Tiger, whose book Manufacture of Evil: Ethics, Evolution, and the Industrial System remains a standard. The industrial era disconnected kinship and community from the manufacturing process, and trust was a casualty (a thesis confirmed in the 1990's when a Nobel Prize was awarded for a man who proved that trust lowers the cost of doing business).
Now we have an entire new literature on how corporations have abused the personality status intended for freed slaves, and been largely freed from all accountability and transparency. Books like The Informant: A True Story and Conspiracy of Fools: A True Story and the books about Wal-Mart, Enron, and Exxon, all support the concerned premise of this author.
Corporations have created a global class war (see the books by that title), and have compromised virtually all governments. Corporations have bought the US Congress (see Breach of Trust: How Washington Turns Outsiders Into Insiders and The Broken Branch: How Congress Is Failing America and How to Get It Back on Track (Institutions of American Democracy); they have compromised national, state, and local social safety networks and standards, they have enhanced the power for 45 dictators world-wide, and they have bribed or created and then bribed elites in virtually every country on the planet so as to loot the commonwealths of those nations with the permission of the elites and against the public interest of the larger population.
Corporations do not rule the world, they are killing the world, and as one wag whose name I cannot recall has said, those doing the killing have names and addresses. Hence this book is a natural lead in to the author's latest work, The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community (Bk Currents) which I am also reviewing today.
There are *many* books on the evil of unfettered corporations, if I were to recommend only two, they would be Barnett's "Global Reach" for historical context, and this one for the current threat. I also recommend the DVD, The Corporation
"Free trade" is war of the rich against the poor........2006-11-10
Korten's book, When Corporations Rule the World, is a clear, devastating look at what's been going on under the radar of many Americans for the past three decades. Hey! Free Trade! What's there not to like? Well... plenty, and Korten tells it such that even a boob like me can understand. There's still time to take back control of the world from the transnational corporations. This book helps to show the way.
Masterful review of your world and mine. .......2006-11-10
So, economics is not your thing? Well, take time to get educated with a real "down home", easy to follow explanation of things that control your world. David Korten is a masterful writer; an explainer extrodinaire who documents his ideas with excellent reasoning and bibliographic notes. You'll be amazed.
A MUST READ for every American.......2006-11-03
Buy it, read it and tell everyone you know about it.
