This lavishly illustrated history of the American railroad poster whisks us away to an era when the rails were king. These enticing advertisements to visit the cities and landmarks of the growing United States make for a truly sentimental journey--and a luscious feast for the eyes!
Customer Reviews:
Stuck-up trains........2004-06-22
The American railroads sold their services using posters but had a problem deciding what should be shown. European train posters mostly favored showing the end destination rather than the American graphic idea of showing the train. The first few posters shown in this beautiful book are a mixture of route maps, flamboyant lettering and illustrations of trains, sometimes all on the same poster, too.
Santa Fe, to my mind, really kicked off the great railroad poster by using the talented Louis Treviso and Oscar Bryn. They both produced knockout, straightforward graphic solutions, with bold colors and strong typography, clearly influenced by the leading European poster artists, Ludwig Hohlwein, Lucian Bernhard and the Beggarstaff Brothers. Into the twenties Santa Fe used Sam Hyde Harris to continue the trend in strong graphics. Southern Pacific used Maurice Logan to design equally powerful posters, page sixty-two has a stunning Logan graphic of two trains selling the Great Salt Lake.
Other artists and designers who get a good showing are Hernando Villa, who developed the memorable Indian's head for Santa Fe, Leslie Ragan for the New York Central (he has the most illustrations in the book) Sascha Maurer for the Pennsylvania Railroad and many artists who have one or two works shown. The authors combine all these creative folk and the way their output was used by the rail and ad industries up to the Fifties.
I thought the book was very well produced, though the caption typography is rather fussy, using the rather old fashioned Fig.33 and then capital directions in brackets (FACING PAGE TOP LEFT) in every case there is enough space to put the caption below each poster. The back of the book has a bibliography and index.
This is probably the best (and only) title about American railroad posters, some good work is shown in 'All Aboard' by Lynn Johnson (ISBN 0811817474) which also covers general railroad graphics. European travel posters have had plenty of coverage and I can recommend a really super book of British work, 'Railway Posters 1923-1947' by Beverly Cole and Richard Durack (ISBN 1856690148) with over two hundred illustrations in a well designed book.

Based on the list of cartoonists and artists interviewed in Dangerous Drawings, you know it's bound to be a great book. But as you pour through the discussions, you'll realize that it's far more than that. The questions posed by RE/Search Books cofounder Andrea Juno are always insightful, and relatively few punches are pulled. The 14 comix and graphix artists interviewed--including Art Spiegelman, Dan Clowes, Julie Doucet, Chris Ware, Diane Noomin, Chester Brown, Ted Rall, and Phoebe Gloeckner--offer extremely personal revelations about art and life. Taken together, the thoughts of these artists form an interesting singular commentary on the state of comics and graphic literature: by using a popular art form that, for the most part, remains outside of the establishment's critical eye, these cartoonists are able to deliver potent, highly charged, personal work.
Customer Reviews:
maybe it's me..........2003-05-17
I have owned this book for years, and I still find myself picking it back up and re-inspiring myself to be more devious in my own comic-writing.
Personally, Julie Doucet is my favorite comic book artist, and I learned about her first through this book. Eli Langer has pushed the limits so much & gotten away with it. I love his story. It's also nice to be able to put a "face to the name" and get to see the artists' mugs- which are often also quite amusing.
All that I have to suggest is that if you are not willing to expose yourself to the whole "bloody-pedophelic-rape-abused" experience, I would say don't buy this book. Otherwise, it s a great read, especially to an aspiring underground-comic artist.
Mostly interesting interviews with mostly comic artists........2000-10-18
A nice addition to the post RE/Search works, and follows heavily in the steps laid by RE/Search. This is a collection of interviews with 14 artists, along with a single essay by Art Spiegelman that gives an alternate view of comics history than the one related in Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics. It seems to be a primer for non-initiates to the world of underground pop-art, especially comics.
Some of those interviewed are independent comic "gods"- Art Spiegelman, in particular, has won a Pulitzer Prize for his work Maus. Other artists, like G.B. Jones and Emiko Shimoda, expose the new reader to a world they probably had never thought about, let alone see in print. All of the artists chosen are, while working within the confines of pop-art, outside of the mainstream. Looking at familiar motifs, like comics, album covers, or even gay art (for those familiar with tom of Finland), in new and different ways is what this is all about.
Andrea's interviewing style is good; these aren't antagonistic interviews, nor are they rigid- they are open ended, to allow the artists to expound and expand on a subject. While some of the artists fall a little flat and come across as dull, there are some gems. The Chris Ware interview in particular is a great read, and will convert most who read it into Ware fans.
So, why only three stars?
Like another reviewer stated, the fact that the majority of the interviewees are comic artists makes the ones who aren't stick out like a sore thumb. Eli Langer's inclusion is especially offsetting. While his status as an "edgy" artist merits inclusion under this book's broad title, he has little in common with the other artists. His pseudo-child-porn drawings, while not appealing to a pedophile and not pornographic, also show little artistic merit. (One picture of a man holding a baby above a baying dog reminds me of a Gary Larson "Far Side" cartoon.)
The inclusion of Keith Mayerson as an interview subject- although shoved to the back of the book- seems somewhat self-serving, as Juno Books had just published his Horror Hospital Unplugged graphic novel (his first published work).
The paltry number of essays- only one- is disappointing, considering how reference-quality earlier RE/Search books have been. A collection of interviews, while interesting, does not demand rereading and reference.
Some of the interviews, especially the potentially intriguing Matt Reid one (grafitti/hip hop artist), are too short and convey no real message beyond a pedestrian view of currently published works. In other interviews, where Andrea obviously is acquainted with the interviewee, much time is spent talking about inside knowledge or incidents- for a book that aims to be an introduction to avant-garde pop art, it's a mistake to assume readers will understand what is going on. Finally, while some of the interviews were interesting, they never really got beyond anything that the Comics Journal is capable of.
This isn't being said to ward off potential readers- in fact, for people unfamiliar with "comix", the rating should probably be higher. But, I'm familiar both with "comix" and with RE/Search books, and while the book is a worthwhile and readable book, it doesn't quite come up to my heightened expectations, and comes across as a good- if average- book with occasional bursts of excellence.
Great way to become acquainted with hip comix artists.......1998-06-22
This book contains a whole bunch of interviews with a whole bunch of artist, mostly comic-book artists working outside of the mainstream. The interviews themselves are quite interesting, but for me the best thing was getting a look at some work by cartoonists that I was not very familiar with. The book is filled with samples of each creator's work.
The interview with Chris Ware made me go out and buy all the issues of "Acme Novelty Library" that I could find. In fact, a single excerpt from his work (printed on page 51 of this book) made me decide. He draws in about 12 square inches what takes Scott McCloud 100 pages to describe in Understanding Comics.
The one complaint that I have is that a few of the subjects don't seem to fit. Three out of the 14 interviewees don't work in comics. While they are interesting interviews (I remember the Eli Langer case, so his interview was fascinating), they don't feel like they belong in this book. Either they should have been cut, or we should have had *more* of them. Because as it is, 11 of the 14 interviewees work in comics. And that makes the other 3 stand out oddly.
In any case, this is a great read, and it makes a good gift to people interested in cutting edge art who *aren't* into comics. It will let them know how cool some comics really are.

Book Description
Joan Foster is the bored wife of a myopic ban-the-bomber. She takes off overnight as Canada's new superpoet, pens lurid gothics on the sly, attracts a blackmailing reporter, skids cheerfully in and out of menacing plots, hair-raising traps, and passionate trysts, and lands dead and well in Terremoto, Italy. In this remarkable, poetic, and magical novel, Margaret Atwood proves yet again why she is considered to be one of the most important and accomplished writers of our time.
Customer Reviews:
A fun romp!.......2007-08-08
I loved the Handmaids Tale and enjoyed this book as well, though it is much lighter. The best part of the book was not included in the reviews - her abusive childhood and subsequent eating disorder. The end of the book got more and more implausible and I started to feel like I was reading Jennifer Weiner instead. But, all in all, a really good book; very entertaining.
One of the better books I've read.......2006-04-29
I randomly stumbled across this book and I'm so glad. I'd never read any of Atwood's books before this, and was extremely impressed. Her book is a truly inspired blend of hilarious farcical elements combined with haunting, melancholy passages. Joan is an extremely well drawn and three dimensional character, easy to empathize with in spite of, and because of, her numerous quirks, neuroses, and personalities. Combined with Atwood's fluid, flawless writing style, it made for a unique and highly entertaining experience I will not soon forget. Looking forward to reading more from this author.
an early and relatively weak effort by Atwood.........2005-10-08
"Lady Oracle" has many elements found in Margaret Atwood's later, and better, novels. We have a woman reminiscing about her rotten childhood, especially in dealing with bullying female classmates, as in Atwood's "Cat's Eye". This same woman is also a writer who blurs her fiction with her own life, as in Atwood's "Blind Assassin". In truth I sensed "Lady Oracle" to be in some sense autobiographical, with the author working through her personal complex issues and expressing them in prose ... and not very successfully.
Oh, there is a story. Woman writer fakes her death and escapes to Italy. She then recounts her entire life, husbands and affairs and all. It all has a 1960s trashy soap opera feel about it. Unlike other amazon.com reviewers I didn't find this book particularly humorous, although the prose itself is quite clever ... Atwood's most notable trademark.
Bottom line: disappointing and entirely forgettable. Not recommended.
Worlds Colliding.......2005-02-15
This is the third Atwood book I've read, and I really enjoy her work. Her stories tend to suck you in, and by the middle of the book you're having trouble putting it down because you want to finish it. It's as if some of her stories are so implausible that you can't imagine what could happen next, so you have to keep reading.
In Lady Oracle Atwood describes the life of Joan, a woman who has had many negative experiences as a child and makes some bad choices as an adult. The story goes back and forth from her present life to her childhood, and the flashbacks continue through the story to bring you up to speed on her life. This is the same form that Atwood's two other books that I have read have taken as well. Joan becomes a celebrated author, but her husband, the impetuous Arthur, has negative things to say about her and her work. She becomes involved in scandals and finds that the only way out may be to fake her own death (which continues her pattern of placating others and not being able to do for herself).
In all this is another great book, but I personally felt that the ending was anti-climactic, leaving the reader with no sense of closure.
Awesome!!!.......2004-04-30
Like so many of her books, it's mostly about the inner workings of the female main character. It seems a bit quirkier and at times funnier than some of her other books. Reminded me a lot of Cat's Eye, which has to be one of my favorites by her. If you have read any of Margaret Atwood's books and liked them, you'll enjoy this one.

Book Description
Like its descendants the Ouija board and the Magic-8-Ball, The Ladies’ Oracle, first published in the sixteenth century, divines answers to questions inquisitive women through the ages have asked about life and love.
Shall I soon be courted? Ought I to grant that which he asks so ardently? Shall I be happy in my enterprises? What young woman hasn’t at one time or another fretted over these most perplexing of questions? One has only to put to The Ladies’ Oracle these and a multitude of other queries, and the book will lay forth its wisdom. Ask and the Oracle shall answer. Compared in its wisdom to the I Ching, the Oracle derives its infallibility from a reliable mathematical plan. It’s easy to use with satisfying results and includes an addendum of charms, ceremonies, and spells. For those preoccupied with the details of their destinies, this elegant volume based on the original English edition published in 1857 is an absolute necessity.
Customer Reviews:
A delightful surprise ... very accurate.......2006-06-29
Hmmm... this is one of the most coolest oracle books on the market. Several of the responses were neat and I suspect the equivalent to counting cards in poker games is behind it. Nevertheless, this Victorian-style fortune telling device is lots of fun!
The Oracle is Always Right! .......2005-12-19
I got the a copy of The Ladie's Oracle in college - almost 16 years ago. My girlfriends and I swear by it - the Oracle has great knowledge, but we have found, she can be pretty rude too if destiny is not with you. In the end, she is always right, especially on matters of love. Trust in her, and don't use her on off days, and remember, you can always ask her again tomorrow and your fate may change.
Don't hesitate to buy this - I've been looking for copies in print every year since the mid 90's, and this is the first I've seen. You will love her, and keep this book with you forever!
Mysterious and Accurate Book.......2002-06-14
This is a very misterious book, it will give you honest answers to your questions, you will be surprise how a book that was probably writing about 460 years ago and reprint in our time, can still can be use as a fortune telling tool in the year 2002. I love it, and it took me 26 years to find one so buy one if you can, be one of the lucky ones to own it and leave it as a family treasure to the young ladies in your family, they will be facinated by this book.
FORTUNE TELLING AT IT'S BEST.......2002-04-17
What a brilliant book, being interested in fortune telling, tarot etc,I was fortunate enough to come across this book "THE LADIES ORACLE". A group of friends and I sat all night asking the book questions, the hours of fun just rolled by. i would recommend this book to all the ladies out there, but "BEWARE", THIS BOOK IS ADDICTIVE.... happy reading.
addictive oracle........2002-04-17
being very curious about fortune telling, tarot etc, my friends and i came upon this book and "WOW", what a great night we all had asking the book questions, the hours went so quickly,a great book, be warned you.ll be addicted too.

Book Description
Margaret Atwood's novels are photographs of her characters' lives: while words only ever describe her protagonists' blurred visions of their pasts, their 'true' stories are told in subtexts which run parallel or even contrary to the main story line and which depict the unseen, the buried, the 'untrue'. Replete with intertextual references, her fiction illuminates that and why "[w]hat isn't there has a presence, like the absence of light" (The Blind Assassin). She plays with our conventional modes of perception to make us aware of the way we frame reality in our minds. In her book, Andrea Strolz discusses the interrelation between metafictional and intertextual features in two of Atwood's novels that share many similarities, even though written in different decades. She examines how Atwood weaves intertextual references into her fiction, how she facilitates a reader's recognition of the intertexts, and she shows that Atwood's narrator-prota-gonists also reflect on our age as one of intertextuality.

June 19,1992 was surface finding in a plowed field in Wilmore Ky., found to my surprise found a 10 pound mint, polished axe. Was very excited... I have found 2000 pieces over the past 10 years. Just found a top to a water jug. Would enjoy any correspondence from other collector's. have many different types found in only 5 fields. cannot identify all of them...One is a triple fulton turkey tail arrowhead, notched at bottom. I also have a piece of drift wood with a large spear inside wood with a celt, and other piece unidentified.

Business process outsourcing (BPO) is one of the very few business tools available to managers with the power to fundamentally transform their organizations. Done on a global scale, BPO enables companies to simultaneously reengineer their existing operations, create a more flexible and adaptable organizational structure, and tap the best minds in the world to create an innovation explosion.
For the first time ever, BPO's best-known expert and pioneer, Michael Corbett, who helped craft IBM's entry into the outsourcing business, details the opportunities presented by BPO as well as a plan for implementing and sustaining its benefits.
The Outsourcing Revolution is written for executives and managers in organizations of any size who want to learn how BPO can improve their company's performance. More than a ""how-to"" book, it provides a comprehensive framework for decision making and action based on the real-life experiences of executives heading up successful initiatives for their companies today. Readers will learn how to:
* Determine the value of BPO for any process.
* Analyze risk, evaluate its potential impact, and use a range of techniques to reduce, eliminate, and manage that risk.
* Identify, evaluate, and select the right partner or partners.
* Turn contractor relationships into long-term, successful BPO relationships.
* Transition people, processes, and technologies to the BPO state.
* Identify, develop, and reward outsourcing managers.
* Create new ways of doing business ahead of the competition.
The Outsourcing Revolution features case studies detailing how specific companies planned, implemented, and are managing BPO. Results from surveys of more than 1,500 companies provide real data on what organizations around the world are doing and why, as well as what does and doesn't work.
Customer Reviews:
Outsourcing is a great concept .......2006-06-12
This book gave me a logical and linear process to review the value of outsourcing in my business. I'm a marketing consultant to the accounting industry and my customers are always complaining about a shortage of qualified staff. Knowledgeable accountants are just plain not available to hire at just about any reasonable cost in the past 6 years.
I liked the `value chain' process of determining what other functions could be outsourced in a business, not just to India but maybe local vendors as well. We discovered that with a little thought we might be able to move up to 40% of our operation off site this year, and possibly another 20% next year.
I'm recommending to my accountant customers that they all consider hiring one to five staff from India and start moving all low value, boring tasks off shore.

Good for Historical View on Outsourcing but Not Cutting Edge Current View.......2006-05-06
This books is a short, conversational style (not instructive or informational) read that will leave you largely unsatsified if you are looking for a how-to, why-is, where-are, or what-if.
Outsourcing and offshoring are evolving too quickly and they've already left this offering behind. This book addresses the when-did and who-was, as in personal memoirs. Its not what I would categorize a business book and I think that is what people have expected of it. You get what you pay for so don't let the value price fool you. It was one of the originals but the bookshelves have filled with dozens of much more value provided guides on the subject matter.
Borrow - don't buy, is my advice
Best of Breed.......2006-04-27
For my money, clearly the best book available on outsourcing. While others seem loaded up with simplistic templates and general information readily available over the web, Corbett actually explains what's happening and why and provided me (and my company) a clear roadmap for all of our outsourcing work.
Nothing New .......2006-03-16
The arguement on why to outsource has been debated ad nauseum. Either you see the financial and organization value or you're behind the curve.
Most business leaders are convinced, but if you're not, this book will provide you the same old reasons. I found the book dated as compared to other selections on outsourcing in the book store.
My suggestion is borrow this one...don't buy it.
Nuts and Bolts Offhsoring and Outsourcing Story.......2006-02-25
I, too, failed to see the "how to outsource", but its a well-crafted overview which can assist anyone who is looking to get the history and "pro's vs' con's" of outsourcing.
