Fantastic book!.......2007-07-14
Wow! This book is beautiful AND it really helps you to draw Marvel or any other character! A great guide for those starting in the world of drawing, and a good help for those who are farther along the path. The presentation is really breathtaking, the pages are big, colorful and detailed, and it includes transparent pages so you can see the rough work over the finished piece. By far the best "How to Draw Marvel Characters" book I've ever laid my hands on!
Good for beggining comic book artist .......2007-02-25
If I had to compare this book to another one I'd say it's like a new version of "How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way". This is very good introduction of comic book artist's tools and techniques. The book really encourages to start drawing. There are good examples of human figure drawing, comic characters types, basic forms, coloring, inking and more. The explanations are clear and short - It's all about drawing. Tracing papers with initial sketches included inside show how the character is built from basics which is very helpful. Although the book covers all basics the Author advises a reader to learn basic human anatomy from additional sources which is a good idea.
I like this book very much.
I love it!.......2006-12-13
I bought it because I am absolutely terrible at drawing men, and just wanted a book of references, but I didn't expect as complete a guide as I got! It's fantastic for anyone who wants to learn to draw, or even for anyone who loves to draw and has been doing it for a while. The overlays, especially the huge two-page spread overlay, is so incredibly useful.
I fully recommend it! If you're looking for a comic drawing book, get this one!
One of the BEST books about the subject!!.......2006-09-15
This book RIVALS Stan Lee's "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way"!!!
The sections/ chapters are logically placed.
Dan Jurgens is a TRUE veteran; his drawing is SOLID!!
a. The overlays are EXTREMLEY helpful
b. The illustrations are well drawn.
c. The section on inking/coloring is top notch.
This book is a MUST for beginners to advanced alike.
Old pros will find this book a useful reference especailly
as it deals with Writing, Pencilling, Inking, Coloring
to FINAL production.
The overlays alone are WORTH the price of the book!!!
A birthday present .......2006-07-27

Good battles evil, and the world hangs in the balance! Resurrected by the Shroud of Turin, the zombified Dr. Jameson intends to finish what he started 150 years ago -- destroying the earth with a giant space eel. Standing in his way is Dr. Ong, a would-be pastor turned scientist who now works in a government research facility infamously known as "Creature Tech." Aided by an unlikely cast of rednecks, symbiotic aliens, and a CIA-trained mantid, Dr. Ong embarks on a journey of faith, love, and self-discovery. All in a day's work at Creature Tech! ... And, by the way, 20th Century Fox and New Regency are currently developing Doug TenNapel's Creature Tech for the sliver screen. We'll keep you posted as things develop.
Customer Reviews:
An Amazing Sci-Fi Adventure.......2007-09-11
A few friends told me about this book while we were at a comic book convention and I decided to give it a chance. I knew that TenNapel created Earthworm Jim, so I figured it would be pretty neat based on that.
I was totally blown away.
The story and the art are amazing and fantastic. The crazy/absurd storyline is one you'll never forget and it will grab onto you and never let go. Highly recommended. The mix of serious storytelling and humor is very enjoyable and the story is very original.
Yes, there are a few Christan themes and references, but it doesn't take away from the story at all, it certainly adds to it and blends in nicely with the rest of the adventure.
You can't really take something with giant space eels too seriously anyway ;)
Stunning.......2007-05-08
I recently picked up this book and was immediately blown away. A long time fan of Earthworm Jim, The Neverhood and all manner of comic books, this was actually my first time reading one of Doug Tennapel's graphic novels. The art is beyond gorgeous and the storyline is quirky, engaging and evocative. I would compare it perhaps to Blankets and the X-Files if ever the show was turned into a graphic novel by Master Shake of the Aqua Teens. Truly a worthy read.
The most fun of TenNapel's books.......2007-02-27
A fault of much sci-fi/fantasy writing is an over-reliance on creative settings, at the expense of great stories. TenNapel manages to go nuts with monsters, rednecks, and mad scientists, but he keeps his eyes on the ball. The result: a thoroughly entertaining tale, a great love story, which will stick with you long after you've finished.
And wow, is this one bizarre story!
Hilarious, good artwork, spiritual elements: Excellent Graphic Novel.......2007-01-05
The title--CREATURE TECH--refers to the nickname given by a small town to the specialty scientific research underground facility (Research Technical Institute) that's located in their midst.
If you remember the ending to RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, with that notion of this bureaucratic warehouse for assorted, mysterious objects (like the ark), that applies to CREATURE TECH. This facility studies these crated up objects or creatures or apparati that no one knows what they are exactly, but they're something weird.
So, the graphic novel starts with this really wacky science guy way back when with an eel fetish, who has made a deal with a demon (who assists him in the lab/observatory) as he's luring a very odd thing to earth: some kind of giant space eel. It's quite funny. It doesn't end well for mad scientist dude and his demon hand.
Long time later (think a century plus) and our genius scientist atheist hero, who's dad is a preacher, is sent to work at CREATURE TECH, which is located in his old hometown. He doesn't wanna go back there, to that lab, since it's where his dad worked before going on to his ministerial duties.
AND NOW, the wacky, weird fun gets going.
You meet the odd, but oddly endearing, townfolk, who don't like the standoffish protagonist much. There's the handicapped girl who tugs at the hero's heart. His father the preacher, who loves his son and wants him to know Jesus. The kindly rednecks unfazed by the giant mutant bug they end up adopting. And the dead mad scientist, who comes back with the help of the Shroud of Turin (an object in one of the crates at CTI.)
Our hero has to battle near death, a symbiote who isn't as simplistic as one might first think, an effete English vampire dude, hellcats--and in the process learn about his dad, love, neighborliness, and God.
This is a seriously cool graphic novel. It's got a solid Christian heart and an off-kilter sense of humor. (If you don't laugh snot out of your nose at what happens to the butcher's meat when the Shroud comes into play, well...your humor meter need calibrating.)
I've since acquired a couple more TenNapel works. The guy is whack, in a very good way.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Greatest Graphic Novel Ever IMHO.......2006-06-14
This is Ten Napel's greatest work, easily. I found with this graphic novel, I didn't want the story to end. When it did end, however, I was very satisfied. It was a fantastic story and I'm looking forward to Iron West coming out when it does. Keep it up, Doug Ten Napel. =)

Hilarious jab at surviving La-La-Land.......2001-10-15
It's another fine skewering of the motion picture industry subculture like the Jay Mohr series "Action," focusing primarily on the glory jobs like Actor, Producer, Agent, Publicist, Writer (the only job that is given any sort of empathy or survivability), Poseur, and Model/Actress/Whatever. The Top 10 lists are clever--like how to get a studio deal, how not to get a studio deal, how to get into a big party, how to get thrown out of a big party, and so on--as are the nepotism lists and which applications of it were good moves and which weren't. I especially loved the five-year plan section (everyone seems to suffer career death--or literal death in the case of the Producer--except for Writer/Directors).
Perceptively funny.......1997-10-06
I howled at the observations in this book. Everyone was at the mercy of the pen and the light humor was in very good taste. Some references I didn't understand (guess that's why I needed the book....). I recommend it to anyone who is curious about what goes on beyond the scenes in Hollywood.
Best and funniest since "The Preppy Handbook" 10 years ago.......1997-08-21
Really good, easy and funny reading. The humor is targeted as much to readers in Middle America as it is to Hollywood insiders.
Like a bunch of well-written Spy Magazine features (back when Spy was good.) Includes funny "top 10"-type lists that are even better the second time you read them, because you start to get the various inside jokes involved. A dishy parody of all the Hollywood stereotypes whose images now populate the world.
Some of the "how to" lists are both real and absurd at the same time, which is one reason why the book is so funny.
The pictures and captions are great (unfortunately printed a bit too dark to be able to make copies to fax to friends). A few of the book's references are over my head, like when you can't quite figure out what unspoken joke David Letterman is laughing about, but you know it's gotta be funny so you feel like laughing anyway.
I think I'll end up buying a bunch of copies to give out as holiday gifts.
Book Description
Winner of the Golden Lion in Venice in 1989, A City of Sadness introduced Western audiences to the richness of New Taiwanese Cinema. Its director, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, is now recognized as one of the most profoundly original auteurs in contemporary cinema. A City of Sadness revisits a painful episode in recent Taiwanese history, creating an elliptical and impressionistic picture of Chiang Kai-shek's take-over of the island after the defeat of his Kuomintang army by Mao Zedong. Taiwan's politics and the suffering of its inhabitants are invoked by Hou in the story of an extended family of four brothers. The first Taiwanese film shot in direct sound, A City of Sadness echoes the forgotten voices of ordinary people facing political repression.
Bérénice Reynaud deciphers the complex social and historical threads that come together in the film while analyzing its aesthetics in the context of Hou's entire career.

These cryptograms, from the National Puzzlers' League, won't be easy because the creators have taken pains to remove the easiest steps usually available to solvers. Regularly occurring articles and conjunctions are gone; the sentences often don't even have the rhythms of ordinary speech. But that will make the reward even sweeter once the answers are found.
Customer Reviews:
the puzzler.......2005-12-30
I loved Sit & Solve Cryptograms, but I was very disappointed with S&SC#2. The authors were more interested in finding quotes that didn't contain words like "the" than they were in finding interesting and meaningful quotes. Most were just a bunch of jibberish. Also, the font used is very small and close together, making it very difficult to read what you've solved.
Won't buy this book.......2005-01-15
Although I love to do cryptogram puzzles, I won't be buying this or any other book of puzzles with a toilet seat on the cover. For this puzzle-doer, an instant turn-off. Sorry!
Book Description
It seems, at first glance, like an obvious step to take to improve industrial productivity: one should simply watch workers at work in order to learn how they actually do their jobs. But American engineer FREDERICK WINSLOW TAYLOR (1856-1915) broke new ground with this 1919 essay, in which he applied the rigors of scientific observation to such labor as shoveling and bricklayer in order to streamline their work... and bring a sense of logic and practicality to the management of that work. This highly influential book, must-reading for anyone seeking to understand modern management practices, puts lie to such misconceptions that making industrial processes more efficient increases unemployment and that shorter workdays decrease productivity. And it laid the foundations for the discipline of management to be studied, taught, and applied with methodical precision.
Download Description
President Roosevelt in his address to the Governors at the White House, prophetically remarked that "The conservation of our national resources is only prelimi-nary to the larger question of national efficiency." The whole country at once recognized the importance of conserving our material resources and a large movement has been started which will be effective in accomplishing this object. As yet, however, we have but vaguely appreciated the importance of "the larger question of increasing our national efficiency." We can see our forests vanishing, our water-powers going to waste, our soil being carried by floods into the sea; and the end of our coal and our iron is in sight. But our larger wastes of human effort, which go on every day through such of our acts as are blundering, ill-directed, or inefficient, and which Mr. Roosevelt refers to as a, lack of "national efficiency," are less visible, less tangible, and are but vaguely appreciated.
Customer Reviews:
Recommended from historical perspective.......2007-01-10
The principles of scientific management has been waiting on my bookself for me to pick it up and actually read it for quite a while. Taylors book has had such an impact on the modern management ideas that I simply had to read the original work.
Before reading the book, I had my opinion ready (which is not a good thing). The ideas must be stupid, I thought. However, when starting to read the book, I was taken by the situation described by Taylor and the thinking he had behind his theory. Much of it made sense, at the time and was not so stupid at all. I've thus read it in one sit (it's not very thick either). So what's it about?
Taylor's ideas were about studying the work and finding the best method for doing work and then training the workers in following this best method. Finding this best method is "the science" and management is very much responsible for finding and improving the work of the workers. So, this creates the separation of planning and execution, which is often mentioned when talking about Taylorism.
Why did he do this? Much of the reasoning, which is very visible in his dialog between worker and manager, is that workers are too stupid to improve their own work. They have no education and they wouln't be able to actually think about their work and improve it. This might have been a fact in his life. However, if this is still true today, personally I would doubt it.
Taylor considered workers stupid. He makes quotes like "A trained gorilla would probably be better in the job than these man" (not exact quote). These statements made me very uncomfortable and therefore I've long doubted about whether it should be a 3 or 4 star rating.
I've still decided on a 4 start rating. The book is a classic and very valid in his time. I recommend everybody to read it AND REALIZE THAT TODAYS WORLD IS NOT THE SAME. Thus take the good ideas (improving your work) but leave the ideas which were related to their time (strict separation planning and execution).
Worth reading.
Insight into the Capitalist Mindset .......2006-04-24
This book provides an incredible insight into the capitalist mindset and its (dehumanizing) treatment of employees, whereby employees are treated as objects which need to be squeezed to extract the most labor possible. If you've seen the documentary 'The Corporation,' you might remember that time trials are routinely used in sweatshops: the amount of time for doing every little action ("hammer the nail") is specified to a 1/1000th of a second. This book is the foundation of such management techniques.
The crucial motivation for this book comes from the realization that inefficiencies aren't just material (ie if we use less rubber in each boot, we can make more money) but inefficiencies also exist in personnel (ie this person could be working twice as fast and making us more money).
This book is fundamentally about distributed knowledge. Just as Wikipedia has become a centralized collection of knowledge which was previously distributed across thousands of people, Taylor's "planning committee" works in a similar way: it extracting and collects and studies the workers' knowledge of their own tasks. Upon finding the best (most efficient) methods for accomplishing each task, it redistributes that knowledge back to the workers creating a more efficient system.
An excellent and entertaining read. Highly recommended.
Phrase.......2005-01-19
I understand that some terms are well-known, but in 1998, to use the term "nigger in the woodpile" in quotes or not does not ride well with me. I have to read a handout from this book for a class. Had I bought the book, I would've returned it. But since I cannot return copies, I guess I'm stuck with it, but I will be complaining to my teacher about the use of this handout.
The Roots of Modern Management.......2004-06-13
Taylor's ideas are commonly viewed as being antiquated because of the time and circumstances under which he worked. Not so! If you think TQM (including Deming, Juran, Shewart, and Taguchi) and Collaborative Management are the answer, you'll find the roots of of these and more in Taylor. It is true that Taylor applied his efforts mainly to work consisting of brute force - but that was the workplace world which existed then.
Before reading Taylor, you should first get up to speed on modern management/leadership concepts. Then, travel back to a time before machines replaced human labor. (If you are my age it should be easy!) Now read Taylor and use just a bit of imagination to visualize what he would be doing today. Then, and only then, can you begin to understand and appreciate what this man and a few other pioneers like him did.
Would his mindset change the way you do business? Then you'd better change because TQM and Collaborative Management are just Taylor on steroids. You can't understand management/leadership unless you understand Taylor. And you can't compete unless you understand both of these.
Still relevant.......2004-04-26
Although dated this short book contains intersting lessons. The book presents scientific management. Scientific management applies to the management of industrial processes and is based on four principles:
- Development of a science: The various ways of doing the task are analyzed and the best way is identified (note that further progress may be made due to new innovation);
- Selection and training of the work force: The most suitable people are hired and trained to perform according to the science;
- Constant help and feedback: The employees receive regular feedback on their work and help if they are falling behind;
- Deep management involvement in production: Management plans ahead to make sure that the tasks are performed in the best possible way.
The book also emphasizes the human aspect of management: change can only be done slowly and by convincing the employees of the benefits. This explains why it takes a long time to switch to scientific management. Employees need financial rewards for performing well and employees who create better practices should also be recognized and rewarded.
Most examples in the book are dated and not particularly relevant today. They still provide data to judge the improvements that scientific management may provide. The language is also dated and politically incorrect. However if you do not let this distract you, the core of the book remains relevant. Even for modern intellectual work, there are many lessons that can be learned from the book. For example, for software engineering (which I am familiar with):
- Make sure that you use the best practices ;
- Hire smart people and give them the right tools;
- Give feedback on performance and training when needed;
- Actively manage the project, especially the scope of the project when changes occur.
Although scientific management can be applied to turn employees into automata, there is something good about its emphasis on hard numbers and best practices.
I suggest that you read the book with an open mind and pick the core material that applies to your situation.

Review of Standardization Essentials.......2001-09-28
Standardization Essentials, Principles and Practice, Steven M. Spivak and F. Cecil Brenner, published by Marcel Dekker, Inc. New York, NY
Review by Ken Krechmer, Technical Editor, Communications Standards Review
Standardization Essentials is an introductory text on the development (standardization) and use of standards that define similarity. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, repetitive manufacturing processes have been used to economically produce similar things. The standards associated with such manufacture may be termed similarity standards. This book clearly develops and explains the economic advantages of creating and using similarity standards to increase the size of served markets and decrease the per unit cost of manufacture. Although the focus of this book is on North American standardization, there is considerable discussion of the value and importance of world wide standardized manufacturing and the international standardization organizations associated with similarity standards. The important issues of conformity assessment (testing to insure conformance with similarity standards), ISO 9000 (quality management system) and ISO 14000 (environmental management system) standards are addressed. There is a good introductory chapter on both ISO standards series, and an excellent contributed chapter on implementing ISO 9000 in a medium size chemical company.
More than half the book is devoted to 18 independent articles (some previously published), 15 from different people with broad experience in the standardization industry and three from the authors. These articles offer a wide view of current aspects of standardization and are quite interesting to read. These articles range over different manufacturing fields: air conditioning, tires, information technology, automotive and chemicals; they address standardization from multiple vantage points: consortia, US Department of Defense, consumer product safety, developing countries, laboratory accreditation, trade barriers and product procurement. Some of the articles are very descriptive and all are helpful to understand the different views of similarity standards and standardization.
Standardization Essentials concludes with a copy of a US Government document: Office of Management and Budget revised Circular A-119 (1998) on the federal use and development of voluntary standards. Considering that such documents are available over the Internet, it is not clear why the authors chose to include it. The book offers a listing of some of the more significant formal standardization and related organizations in North America and some regional and international standardization and related organizations. But only names are provided. no contact information. Considering how rapidly most standardization committees are moving onto the Internet, the lack of web addresses and pointers is quite surprising and reduces the value of the book as a starting point for further study.
In summary, Standardization Essentials only partially fulfills the promise of its title, offering a view (although a good one) of just similarity standards. It does not address unit of measure standards and the related metrology (e.g., calibration) issues, and addresses only slightly compatibility standards and the related communications issues.
