fascinating and useful relic.......2006-01-17
this is an intriguing book for several reasons--first, it must pointed out that it contains some shocking statements about race that seem to be based on an odd hybrid of neoclassicism and social darwinism. skulls of different races (highly caricatured)are compared to greek ideals using arcane measurements, and this becomes a springboard for a twisted argument about racial superiority that was, alas, probably quite maintstream during the 1920's. additionally, many photographs of live models have been strangely doctored; the faces appear to have been painted over to resemble greek classical sculpture, which, instead of looking beautiful, is rather grotesque... equally hideous (although understandable for the time) is the rubbing out of the models' genitals.
that being said, the anatomical plates are beautifully drawn and numerous, with a great deal of useful information. unlike many other books, photographs of models in bended and tensed poses are compared with diagrams that show the muscles in those same positions, depicting their contracted and expanded states.
finally, this is the ONLY anatomy book I've ever seen that compares male and female antatomy in any depth, showing differences in proportion and skeletal structure (with particular attention to the pelvis). this is something that elliot goldfinger's book completely missed the boat on unfortunately. for that reason alone it is a key book for any serious figurative artist.
Old book in a new cover.......2005-02-17
This is more like a text book with very few poor quality older drawings and photos of models. Nothing is more disturbing than blurred areas of the anatomy in a photo, looks more like mutilation than modesty. Essentially, this is an old book with a new cover, and it is not a handbook.
Book Description
Designed as a guide for students, The Art of Examining and Interpreting Histologic Preparations: A Student Handbook provides instruction on the examination and interpretation of tissue sections seen under the light microscope. Professor Krause's clear, expert narrative explains how to break down, examine, and interpret each tissue or organ and presents a systematic method that can be used to examine histological preparations. The handbook covers what to look for when making sketches, how to examine histologic preparations, cytology, and the basic tissue types. Each chapter contains space for sketches and labels and encourages the creation of a personalized atlas within the handbook.
Download Description
The examination and interpretation of tissue sections seen under the light microscope in a laboratory setting is an example of student-directed, independent problem solving. The proper reading of a histologic section is an acquired art that can only be developed through practice, close observation and repetition. This laboratory manual was designed as a guide for students to aid them in this endeavor. The laboratory study guide/manual was designed to be used as a supplement to any current textbook and/or atlas of Histology. Learning objectives provide the overall goals for each chapter. The narrative of the study guide explains how to systematically breakdown, examine and interpret each tissue and/or organ encountered, without regard to a given histologic slide from a specific slide collection. Thus, this systematic method can be used to examine and interpret histologic preparations from any collection or of any species. The student is encouraged to sketch, label and create a personalized atlas while using this laboratory manual as a guide. The vocabulary that should be developed and used during the laboratory can be found quickly by going to the bold face type in the appropriate segment of the text. Each chapter contains one or more tables in which key structures used in the identification of a tissue/organ are presented, offering the briefest possible summary of important histologic features. As a final short review, an appendix provides summary tables that compare and contrasts the basic differences of several structures that are somewhat similar in general architecture.

Cynical Orange is pretty juicy!.......2006-09-11
At first when reading this manga I thought, "Ok, so this is the korean version of Peach Girl right?" ...Right? Pretty girl is made fun of by all the other girls cause she's pretty. On her right is Maha Jang (if this were Peach Girl, he'd be the Kiley of the manga), who hangs out everyday after school just waiting to catch a glimpse of her. On her left is Jung Yun (in Peach Girl style, this would be the Toji), whom she's liked since middle school but he doesn't even give her the time of day!
Well this manga is on a different course than Peach Girl! The main character, Hye-min, for example, isn't as nice as she appears to be. Maha Jang isn't exactly what he appears to be either. And in this manga, nothing is what it seems! This manga has fabulous characterization. Hye-min's a great, really likeable lead, and how anyone couldn't like her crazy cousin Shin-Bi is beyond me.
The artwork style is whispy and plentiful with hotness! After reading the second volume today -- it's affirmed, I LOVE Cynical Orange. Anyone with a taste for shoujo (even though this Manwha, korean manga) will really get into this series. The day I began reading this, I had only planned to read the first half but I ended up reading the whole thing! It's funny, tasteful, and deep. Read Cynical Orange! It's addicting!
don't hate her cause she's beautiful.......2006-01-17
poor thing, she's the only beautiful girl I've ever met without at least one designated duff friend, or even any friends at all. She does however have a nutty older cousin, and a goofy pretty boy stalker. Great for laughs, lovely scenes, and some surprising character depth...I'd reccomend it to anyone with a sense of humor

A funny, non-serious book for car lovers!.......1997-06-29
MAN!! I had no idea of what was in store for me when I picked this book from the shelf. I read one page that was kinda funny and I thought it would be good. It turned out the it was so hilarious I was laughing so hard I could barely breath!!! I read the whole book in one day, and I loved it. The sheer stupidity of the book made it even more funny, with jokes about using engine parts to serve food and laying your tongue across the car battery terminals to test the battery. It had a wacky crossword puzzle that only the author could figure out because the clues made no sense, and that made it more funny. I would definately recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
too contemporary to be aptly critical.......2003-02-24
Contemporary French Cinema is certainly helpful as it is one of only a few books to be published in English about French cinema from 1980 on. Unfortunately, as is common with many contemporary cultural studies, the book lacks a historical perspective, and therefore explores some avenues that may be relatively insignificant, while glancing over others that perhaps should have been studied more closely. This book is also a little too unorganized, with Austin moving rather uneloquently between subjects, movements, and genres. Still, it gives a nice overview of stylistic tendencies and movements of contemporary French film.

Love the Enthusiasm and Material; Hate the Proofreading.......2007-08-18
This is a typical Cardoza book in that editing, proofreading, and careful production were not part of the equation. I can't understand why this publisher seems to take pride in sloppy work. That out of the way...
Schiller admittedly loves to hype the things he loves, but that's fine. He is a big fan of the Tarrasch, but he backs this with solid knowledge and extensive practice, so it all works to the good. And that's the upside of Cardoza's line of books: they brim with enthusiasm, excitement, interesting ideas, and above all a philosophy of getting out there and winning. After a couple of hours with this book, you just can't wait to get out there and play and try out your new ideas. That's no small thing--- how many chess books make you want an afternoon nap instead?
There are few full books to be found about the Tarrasch. Schiller's book fills a real hole. (The other book I know of is Aagaard and Lund's "Meeting 1. d4" which, while quite good, is more theoretical and dry.) Schiller definitely concentrates on ideas and typical plans and tactics for both sides. The writing style and presentation is cogent and easy to follow. You cannot get through this book without having a thorough conception of the flow of the Tarrasch. Enough material is presented on variants and alternatives to make the book a reasonable enough reference, though you might have to hunt around a bit; of course the book is not "theoretically complete" but it never seemed intended to be. As a good practical introduction, this book will have you playing the Tarrasch in tournament games rather quickly (as it is doing for me).
Later on if you want to become a complete Tarrasch specialist you'll need a little more material, such as a game collection. But for getting going and learning the concepts, this book will take you quite far. You just have to grin and bear it when really obvious typos appear multiple times in one line.
Overall 4 stars for content and sheer enthusiasm and energy; one star off for poor editing.
Great book on Tarrasch.......2002-12-12
Schiller is a Tarrasch fanatic, and it shows in this thick (288 pages) well-produced epic on the Tarrasch Defence. It brims with enthusiasm and with tactics, strategies, traps, theory, history--everything you need to play and love the Tarrasch. The overview and typical strategies sections at the beginning are beautiful. Schiller does not sugarcoat this Defence, but he does promise you exciting chess and that by studying this opening your overall game will improve. It is important to learn how to play with an isolated d-pawn. Another great benefit of the Tarrasch is you can play the pawn structure against nearly any opening (even against 1. e4 you can play a French and have the same structure. Even though Kasparov gave up the Tarrasch, obviously it is a worthy opening if several world champions have played it. Solve the problem of the Bc8 being trapped in the most forthright way! Play the Tarrasch, and get this book!
Awful Book Cover and Content..........2002-01-04
When you first see this book you figure, well the content has to be better than the cover. As amazing as it might sound, the content is even worse. The amount of errors really baffled me and stressed me out. Trying to look up things and the entire layout is just awful. How awful books like this get published is beyond my knowledge. Perhaps someone lost a bet or Schiller owns their soul. Maybe if your a 900 player this would help you break 1000. If your getting this book thinking your gonna be able to defend d4. I guess your gonna have to find out the hard way how shoddy this book is. A bad chess player that writes awful books is a scary thing. I think Ken Smith and Schiller should start their own club. Donate your money to a good charity or buy yourself something worth having. The only use this book has is the hope of being burned when no logs are left.
Poor organization and editing hurt useful book.......2000-05-15
The problem with this book is that it really seems like the author and editor didn't care about putting out a great product.
There are lots of problems with this book. There are far too many typos (it's hard to edit a chess book, but come one!) and the organization is horrid. It's easy to miss crucial subvariations, and the lack of proper indexing, combined with poor organization, makes it very hard to find the game you need.
Schiller's "strategic overview" in the beginning is a great idea, but it's executed poorly. A few examples concerning advancing the d-pawn here (rather than just scattered throughout the book) would work wonders.
So why two stars? Well, because despite its numerous flaws, I find myself using this book a lot. There aren't any other good books on the Tarasch defense these days, and it's an excellent weapon for the club player. There is a lot of good information in here, it's just so hard tofind!
Complete Queen's Pawn is a great place to start.......1999-11-29
After reading this book I am pretty much at ease defending the Queen pawn opening. The strategy presented here will get you through the first 10 or so moves and keep you out of trouble. After that you are of course on your own but not without some ideas and places to look for white weakness. I liked the summary of the strategy that was given in the Overview and Strategic Goals chapters. The short study of alternatives in the last few chapters is also very helpful if the game does not open exactly as planned.
Book Description
In this long-awaited book from the world's premier brand expert and author of the seminal work Building Strong Brands, David Aaker shows managers how to construct a brand portfolio strategy that will support a company's business strategy and create relevance, differentiation, energy, leverage, and clarity. Building on case studies of world-class brands such as Dell, Disney, Microsoft, Sony, Dove, Intel, CitiGroup, and PowerBar, Aaker demonstrates how powerful, cohesive brand strategies have enabled managers to revitalize brands, support business growth, and create discipline in confused, bloated portfolios of master brands, subbrands, endorser brands, co-brands, and brand extensions.
Aaker offers readers step-by-step advice on what to do when confronting scenarios such as the following:
Brands are underleveraged
The business strategy is at risk because of inadequate brand platforms
The business faces a relevance threat caused by emerging subcategories
The firm's brands are tired and bland
Strategy is paralyzed by a lack of priority among the brands
Brands are cluttered and confusing to both customers and employees
The firm needs to move into the super-premium or value arenas to create margin or sales volume
Margin pressures require points of differentiation
Renowned brand guru Aaker demonstrates that assuring that each brand in the portfolio has a clear role and actively reinforces and supports the other portfolio brands will profoundly affect the firm's profitability. Brand Portfolio Strategy is required reading not only for brand managers but for all managers with bottom-line responsibility to their shareholders.
Customer Reviews:
Indispensible.......2007-05-14
David Aaker might be the Kottler of brand strategy. Brand strategy is not an exact science. Aaker can't change that. But he does give the field a profound and comprehensive set of definitions, that makes the development process of a portfolio strategy a transparent one for al involved.
A Positive Contribution!.......2007-02-13
I am the Principal of Cohesion Inc, a marketing & business consulting organization, and also a part-time course director in the marketing faculty of the Schulich School of Business, York University in Toronto, Canada.
I believe that this book, which builds on some of the concepts from Brand Leadership by the same author, makes a positive contribution to marketing and branding literature, especially with respect to topics such as brand extensions and brand architecture. When read together with The New Strategic Brand Management by Jean-Noel Kapferer, it provides a strong grounding in these areas for students and serious practitioners alike.
Renowned Guru Aaker.......2006-05-06
I used Aaker's works since the Brand Equity (1991) to Brand Portfolio Strategy (2004) for the research of international marketing for cutting-edge technology in Taiwan. The brand portfilio strategy has made it an iconic and epic art of brand. I has known Aaker's works from the numerous citations in the leading papers of Journal of Marketing. Aaker's prophetic thinking is down-to-eatrh practical and always updated, with a central belief in pragmatic art of brand. The epilogue at the end of this book and the quotations in the beginning of each chapter is quite heuristic and humerous. Indeed, it is a "must-read" of marketing researchers and practitioners from cover to cover without dust bunny.
The Brand Argument GrowsThinner.......2006-02-25
In fact, after Building Strong Brands, Brand Portfolio strategy has been a big disappointment for me. The book failed to deliver practically on all of the dimensions from the title: it is not very relevant, it definitely doesn't energize the reader, doesn't offer much inspiration for brand leverage and clarity of writing also isn't one of its virtues. Well, it IS different - perhaps just becasue there are not very many texts on the issue. Not a big help for practical brand management, I'm afraid.
Excellent investment of time and money.......2005-06-23
As brands assume roles equal to or more important than the actual products, keeping them dynamic and relevent becomes ever more crucial for business performance. Yet that challenge is becoming more complex as brands proliferate, cluttering brand porfolios and diluting brand equities.
In this book, Aaker builds a framework for understanding the key issues in brand management based on analysis of common initiatives taken by leading companies. It takes a theoretical approach, but it is based in real world examples that make it easy to follow.
I found the section on brand extensions very useful. For example, when considering a brand extensions, should the existing brand be leveraged, simply using a descriptor to define the offering; or should a new sub-brand created...if so, which will play the greater role in defining the offering and driving purchase -- the subbrand or the master?
These are the sorts of issues brand managers and strategists face on a daily basis so Aaker's exporation of these issues is very useful.
"Brand Portfolio Strategy" is not in the category of "brand enlightenment" tales, like Scott Bedbury's "A new brand world". It takes time to get through, can be rather dry.... but overall I found it an excellent investment of time and money.
