Book Description
Street art is a phenomenon which exists across the world's urban centers. What was once regarded as a nuisance at best or vandalism at worst, is now increasingly being recognized as an important art form.
This book brings together the finest examples of street art in Berlin, a city bursting with artistic energy and expression. Working primarily at night, street artists leave their messages on building facades, mailboxes, advertisements, traffic signs and trash bins.
The author has spent many years photographing street art before it is erased by the authorities and he collects here the best work of the city's preeminent street artists.
Customer Reviews:
An enjoyable view into the Berlin Street Art scene.......2007-03-30
Only a smaller book, but a good selection of documented material and examples of the street art scene in Berlin-one of the noticeably more bombed cities in Germany. I really enjoyed repeatedly browsing thru the book, and recommend it to all with an interest in wheat-pasting and stencil work, aswell as other graffiti appreciators.

Book Description
Berlin City Language Christoph Mangler
This book looks beyond graffiti to decipher Berlin's hidden language.
Like many of the world's urban centers, Berlin is awash in signage that most people never see, let alone read. In this dazzling, kinetic collection of color photographs, more than 250 images create a tableau of urban hieroglyphics. Mangler spent nearly three years documenting these messages and iconsscrawled on walls, plastered to signposts, or strewn amid the urban detritus that his fellow Berliners pass by every day. Viewed in their environment, they emerge as an intriguing form of communication and powerful, though fleeting, works of art.
Christoph Mangler is a film director in Berlin.

It brought back the memories of a wonderful vacation........1999-04-09
The photography was excellent, capturing enough of the surroundings that you can understand some of the works. It was also a thrill to see some of my work in print since my friend Mongo and I were the ones who painted "Late night with David Letterman" on the wall. I have a posterprint hanging on my wall as proof of our endeavers. The historical facts of the wall listed in the book were also excellent reading. I only with I could have been there when they tore it down!

See What The Boys In The Back Room Will Have.......2005-12-29
One of my favorite books I've read this year is Schablone Berlin, which for some odd reason Amazon is storing under the title Berlin Schablone; I hope people continue to seek it out and find it, a fantastic candybox of images and speculation. It's very user friendly and you hardly have to know a thing about Germany or the German language to understand it. Caroline Koebel and Kyle Schlesinger are admirable guides, pointing out a set of signs which we might never even have noticed in the busy citiscape of modern Berlin. Maybe you have to be there and be intimate with the city before you notice its "Schablone," i.e. the stencils that graffiti artists and other activists have plastered over aevery conceivable publicx surface, whether it be the curbs beneath the fire hydrants, or the diagonal juts of the fire escapes. You don't even notice them at first, and then, like every other living thing, they become inescapable.
The photographs themselves are lovely: lucid, clear-eyed, deliberately rendered and printed in small, postcard sized images. (Well, large posrcards.) And the variety of stencilling is staggering. Every conceivable artist is involked, from the gabby, petalled overpainting of Raymond Pettibon to the UFA pristinity of Cocteau: if he (or she) can be reduced to a few lines and shadows, then a stencil can be made and reproduced, within a few seconds, on the streets of any city. Why does Berlin have so many? Our guides have a theory or two to explain it. In turn the stencils force us to look again at the public buildings and structures they decorate or detourn: the sad magentas and river blues of Berlin are themselves totally hallucinatory. You could be nowhere else, Kudos to Tucson's Chax Press for bringing us this strange;y bewitching treat.

Product Description
Berlin is an international epicenter for the arts and has become a destination spot for street art creators and admirers alike. Urban Illustration features the most stunning and innovative street art from Berlin, where unknown local heroes and famous international street artists share a common canvas. In the course of documenting over 500 of the best examples of art work in the streets of this dynamic German capital, the book transcends it's core function as a city guide and becomes a magic carpet for armchair travelers and street art officionados alike. With a focus on popular techniques such as stencils, cutouts, markers and wheatpaste, the author Benjamin Wolbergs documents the diverse styles of artists including D*Face from London, Faile and Swoon from New York and Fuck Your Crew from Berlin, just to name a few. In addition to the images, 17 in-depth interviews give detailed information about the artists backgrounds and methods. A separate City map leads the way to the locations in the heart of Berlin where author Benjamin Wolbergs took his fascinating photographs, and where new street art is waiting to be discovered daily.

Book Description
Costume And Identity In Highland Ecuador offers particular insight into the role of costume--clothing, jewelry, hairstyles, and bodily adornment--in a society changing from a subsistence to a wage-based economy. In some highland regions costumes are still relatively conservative; in others, machine-made cloth has replaced handmade cloth or distinctive costumes are disappearing altogether.
This work is the first detailed survey of Ecuadorian costume and will become a standard reference and a much-needed model for other areas of South America.

A Must Read.......2006-05-17
One of the greatest origin comics of our time. If you haven't been shut-in you entire adolescent life, in one way or another, you will be able to relate to one or more of these characters and totally get where they're coming from. That and super powers combined, make for a mighty fine read.
Tired of grit, angst and Wolverine in your comics? Try this..........2006-05-13
This book is fun. It's not over the top slapstick humor or full of witty conversations, but it is pretty fun. It's really well drawn by Leonard Kirk, who I remember from his great run on Peter David's Supergirl, and is written by Hugh Sterbakov, who I never heard of. Hugh mentions in his afterword that co-creator Seth Green is his best pal...so I think we all know how he broke into the field. The book is labelled Volume 1, but the story has a real ending and sequels, although welcome, aren't needed to enjoy the book.
The story: You've got a bunch of stereotypical college freshmen (except for the Amish guy and the beaver) (yeah, I just wrote the line "Amish guy and the beaver" in a review) who find themselves living in the school's science building due to a dorm shortage (except for the beaver - he is there for another reason).
When a science experiment on another floor misfires, the freshmen, and the aforementioned beaver, are all given super-powers related to whatever was on their mind at the instant of the misfire. It works out pretty well for the chick who was wondering how to get into other people's heads. But not so well for the guy looking at a squirrel or the guy who was measuring his, um, well, ahem, let's just call it his 'shortcoming'.
Anyhow, they all get drawn into a plot involving some bad guys and in the process turn into a super-hero team led by an uber-comic-book-geek who ironically happened to be out of the dorm at that critical moment when the others gained their powers.
The book collects the complete six issue miniseries, some art in progress pages, alternate covers, some pinups, introductions by Seth and Hugh, character bios and a short prose wrap-up story.
I don't think I'd give this book to anyone under the age of 14 or so since it does involve frank depictions of college age topics like sex and drinking. But for the super-hero fan looking for something lighthearted it's a good read and it is completely accesible to those who don't read other comics.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Dawn is a goddess, and wants to understand mortals a bit more, and she has a sort of antagonistic relationship with a god.
The point of view character here is a man, and warrior, in a 'different' New York that is fallen and a bit on the barbaric side, you could say.
They end up in a relationship, but not quite as nice as Garth's, for example.

Too Funny! .......2005-11-21
This calendar is a real hit in my family. It features old photos (lots of black and whites) from the 50's, 60's, 70's with crazy captions like, "She was nothing but a man-chasing booze hound. Why can't you be more like her?" and "Dear Diary, last night I became a woman. thank god for plastic surgery." Some may be offended by it, but we love it.
This is the smaller size calendar, but there is a bigger size one with different photos/captions.

Customer Reviews:
Why isn't this in Stormwrack?!.......2007-01-09
This is truly an outstanding supplement for those planning on running adventures on the high seas. As I went through this book, I kept asking myself "Why isn't this in Stormwrack?" For those that aren't aware, "Stormwrack" is the official D&D supplement covering adventures in Aquatic environments.
Don't get me wrong, the material in Stormwrack is good. I'd give it 4 stars as well. However, there is a TON of great stuff in here that Stormwrack doesn't mention. For example, how are skills affected underwater? There are some really good adjustments DM's should consider to certain skills when used underwater...most notably things like Listen, Spot, and so on.
There are also some good and reasonable feats for use in aquatic environments, some nifty spells, and really tons of other material that I would very nearly deem "essential" for those running campaigns aboard ships or under the waves. Again, it makes one wonder why Wizards of the Coast didn't have some sort of similar material in Stormwrack.
I should also add that the book is good quality, and that the art and so on are good quality as well. This isn't a cheap supplement of low quality, like some OGL stuff tends to occasionally be. This won't fall apart on you. I will mention however, that when I ordered it anyway, Amazon had it on 6-8 week backorder, so make sure you check availability before buying it here. If it's not available here, I'm sure you can find it elsewhere on the net.
I highly recommend this product in addition to Stormwrack, for those who are planning to play or run games where the Sea is a primary setting location.
One of the best supplements I've purchased.......2003-10-06
I just recently bought and read this book with the aim of adding some watery adventures to my (typically) land-based adventures.
I was not disappointed. I'm only 2/3 way through this book at this time, but felt compelled to write a review because I just WANT TO RUN A WATERY CAMPAIGN now! :)
The book details three underwater races and provides ideas on how their cultures interact with each other and the land-based races. There are prestige classes, spells, etc. as with other supplements, and I found these ones a nice fit with the context of the book -- especially the Reef Warrior for added mystique. There's also the ships (as detailed in other reviews) and a few rockin' adventure ideas/hooks.
I highly recommend this book. It beats many of the WOTC-published books I've purchased in terms of value & aid to my campaign.
The Most Realistic Seafaring Supplement.......2002-11-09
Calling it realistic may be a stretch since I'm no expert on wooden ships, but I would say that it's more realistic than any of the 3rd edition competitors I've seen.
This is mostly a book for lovers of "crunchy bits". It has lots of good rules for expanding your characters into aquatic adventures and a lot of rules for building your own ships. I think it may be the best D&D sailing supplement either, even knocking out the venerable Of Ships and the Sea.
If you've ever thought you'd like to try a Pirates or Treasure Island campaign, then this is the book for you. The only moderate disappointment is the lack of color illustrations, but the artwork is mostly very good and none of it is bad.
Sailing to new horizons.......2002-07-19
A great resources if you want to add a splash of water to your campaing or want to sail away from the adventure your DM wants to plunge you in.
Published under the open gaming license, this book fits in great with the WOTC rules for D20 3rd edition D&D. Giving you a couple of new races, that I would never use for a PC, but that can be very cool NPC's, both supporting and opposing the players.
The new feats and skills fit in great with the thema of the book.
The best part for me personaly is the chapter about ship construction and the chapter with the already designed ships. There is also a chapter concerned with moving and fighting ship based. The fighting part is realy detailed and nice, but I am afraid I will nearly never use it. That could just be personal, if you want to have ships fight, the rules do make sense and seem very balanced.
The only reason I did not rate this a 5 star book is the fact that it is in black&white. Besides that, the artwork is good quality and so is the binding of the book.
Add Seagoing Adventure to your 3E D&D Game.......2002-02-20
The Seafarer's Handbook is the third book of Fantasy Flight's Legends and Lairs Core Rulebooks (the other two are Mythic Races and Traps and Treachery). Like their first two books, this one is high quality construction with excellent writing and content. The graphics are good, not great, but they do adequately convey the ideas. The book integrates very well with the Player's Handbook and Dungeonmaster's Guide and expands on aquatic topics covered in those books. There are six chapters covering the following; 1) Seafaring Adventures, 2) Seafaring Campaigns, 3) Undersea Adventures, 4) Ship Construction, 5) Ship Designs, and 6) Ship Combat. This book clearly establishes Fantasy Flight as one of the top d20 material producers.
Chapters 1-3 provide extensive material to describe and design the world that borders on or is under the sea. Chapter 1 covers three aquatic races that could be encountered while travelling by ship. In addition, it describes the use of skills and feats while underwater and provides some new feats. Also, it provides lists and descriptions of new equipment, spells, and magic items with an aquatic focus. Lastly it expands on the underwater combat rules. Chapter 2 includes an extensive example of a coastal city, while Chapter 3 provides information about the underwater environment and a template to create aquatic versions of monsters.
The greatest value of the book starts in the final three chapters. The chapter on ship construction is very detailed without being overly burdensome. It provides enough flexibility to truly personalize your campaign, but, also provides basic examples of construction, propulsion, and weaponry. Chapter 5 contains 20 ship design ranging from the basic (non-fantasy, more historic) to exotic (submarines, marine propulsion) ships. The final chapter presents a new combat system for seagoing combat. In this case they have developed a system that is very flexible and provides a wide range of options without being cumbersome. It includes maneuvering, shipboard artillery, ramming, boarding, fire, and weather conditions. For each section, they provide a gameplay example of the concepts just presented.
In summary, the Seafarer's Handbook provides a wealth of information to expand on material just touched on by the Wizards of the Coast core rulebooks. It is a great value for the money.

Book Description
How businesses can thrive by learning which customers are creating the most profit-and which are losing them money.
One of the oldest myths in business is that every customer is a valuable customer. Even in the age of high-tech data collection, many businesses don't realize that some of their customers are deeply unprofitable, and that simply doing business with them is costing them money. In many places, it's typical that the top 20 percent of customers are generating almost all the profit while the bottom 20 percent are actually destroying value. Managers are missing tremendous opportunities if they are not aware which of their customers are truly profitable and which are not.
According to Larry Selden and Geoff Colvin, there is a way to fix this problem: manage your business not as a collection of products and services but as a customer portfolio. Selden and Colvin show readers how to analyze customer data to understand how you can get the most out of your most critical customer segments. The authors reveal how some companies (such as Best Buy and Fidelity Investments) have already moved in this direction, and what customer-centric strategies are likely to become widespread in the coming years.
For corporate leaders, middle managers, or small business owners, this book offers a breakthrough plan to delight their best customers and drive shareowner value.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Piece of Work .......2007-03-21
This book is a highly relevant must read for anyone serious about customer-centricity. The model used has the potential to drive economic benefits that far outpace traditional marketing, CRM, and customer satisfaction focused programs.
It should, however, be read along with some other good material on CDI and Customer Experience Management (CEM) like Collin Shaw's books on CEM [...] - I have no connection to them.
I've talked with a few companies and consultants who have attempted to implement customer profitability management without the underlying CDI and the programs failed - even in smaller markets like Europe. It places a little too much faith in just demanding data from IT on the premise that millions have been invested in systems so the data must be there. That is certainly not always the case. A good CDI strategy is critical to this program. But the focus of this book is the financial model and it should be read for what it is.
The other section of material that could be more developed is the Value-Exchange methodology. Intermixing operational customer segmentation (not the kind done in direct marketing programs) with the profitability deciles would seem to be the kind of thing that is needed to mature the strategy and place relevant value propositions where they belong in the CEM/marketing mix.
But alas, customer centricity is far too broad and complex of a topic to knock out in one book. This book is excellent and makes a much-needed contribution to a field that is sometimes more enamored with attempts at operant conditioning (a.k.a. CRM) than common sense management. I bought out the entire stock of this book from a store and continue to give copies give copies away to this day.
A few simple ideas that are woefully uncommon.......2006-01-12
The central thesis of Selden and Colvin's book is that not all customers are desirable. Some are "angels" who deliver net profit while others are "demons" who cost more to serve than they generate in revenue. A well run company must understand who its customers are and then organize around serving them effectively, securing its relationship with angels while repairing (or ending) its interactions with demons.
The authors write with a simple and bright style that keeps the book interesting. They touch on a number of case studies they've performed in their professional careers to help illustrate their points. I wish that they had included more data in the book, but what they do provide is about right for an introduction to the topic.
Some reviewers deride the content of this book as obvious, but even more obvious is that a tremendous number of businesses don't get it. I see the problems the authors describe play out repeatedly, from perspectives as a professional within my own industry, as an investor, and as a consumer. This book is an exciting rebuttal against the mentality of "The customer is always right" (what if the customer wants to pay less than your cost?) and a wakeup call to move forward from smokestack-age business organization in the information-age economy.
One good idea.......2005-09-10
The book has one good idea in it. You should know your good customers and seek a more profitable way to deal with "not-so-good" customers. It is pretty simplistic - but some companies probably need this insight.
There are more in-depth research out there on this topic in the marketing and operations management journals.
Make your Angel Customers Happy.......2004-03-29
We should all be aware of unprofitable Customers. Anyone in business should be already aware of the 80/20 rule - that 80% of your profits come from 20% of your customers.
This book goes that one step further - by some excellent case studies it shows how 150% of your profits come from 20% of your customers - they are the Angels. The Demons are those 20% of your customers who actually lose you money equal to 150% of your profit.
Its not another book about CRM (Customer Relationship Management), but it is about being Customer-focussed rather than Product-focussed.
I have multiple relationships with Companies who could do with reading this book - including my own employer, with whom I have around 20 Contracts, and yet any one Business Unit only seems to know about 1 or 2 others at best. All those lost selling opportunities - for example they know the ages of my kids from my Travel Insurance Policies, but have never tried to sell me any College Savings Plans!
Read the book and make your Angels happier - and get rid of the Demon ones!
This is a great strategy book.......2004-02-23
This is a skillfully written, subtile and insightfull book.
I believe that the reviewer who said that "this book stated the obvious and that outside of a novice business student, anyone who finds this book interesting or useful may want to consider another profession than business" has missed the point of this book...completely.
The importance of this book is NOT in stating that "the customer is important .. some more than others". This we all know.
The importance of this book is in outlining a practical methods for ascerting which customers are money making one and which are not money making one **by going at the junction of customer marketing and customer finance**. It is by offering a practical way to relate the two perspectives (the qualitative and the quantitative one) that this book was useful to me.
The key thing I learned from this book is the introduction of detailed customer-finance reasonings to evaluate clients.
I also was greatly inspired by their concept of CUSTOMER DEAVERAGING. I too often see company that thinks in terms of their "average customers" and thereby miss any valuable & actionable insight on how to relate to their customers in a way which is both more profitable and more meaningfull (from both the customers and the client perspective).
Well for company who are like that, I think this is a GREAT book that uncovers what needs to be done in both a practical and theorically sound way.
I can testify that having applied a big part of the framework of this book to solve one strategy problem of one of my european client, we did uncover some really devishly customers (50% of their client acquisition was focusing on customers from which their will be never enough money generated to cover the initial customer acquisition expense) and some really angel ones (25% of their customer acqusition was focused on clients that represents overall 65% of their actual profit). We were also able to do some detailed financial modelling to discover that, in their specific case, they should refocus their attention on the angel customers and probably completely change their business model and value proposition for dealing with their demon ones.
If I had one critic it would be that the part relating customer oriented strategy and the stock valuation is treated without enough precision.
Having said that, I can also state the customer business I was speaking about is a recurrent one and that as a result the benefit of acquiring an angel customer goes well beyond the financial revenue derived from them in the first year. So, beyond the immediate profit improvement that are likely to results from their refocusing on the right customers this year, I anticipate this company to achieve a surge of their financial results in the following years (This hopefully will ultimately also find a reflection in their stock price...)
