Book Description
This biography of composer Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) describes with unprecedented intimacy, affection, and respect the life of one of France's greatest artists. After long being regarded as an oddity and an eccentric figure, Berlioz is now being accepted into the ranks of the great composers. Based on a wealth of previously unpublished sources, and on a profound understanding of the humanity of his subject, David Cairns's book provides a full account of this extraordinary and powerfully attractive man.
Berlioz, Volume I, previously published only in Britain, is now available to American readers in a revised edition, together with the eagerly awaited, new Volume II. These two volumes together comprise a monumental biographical achievement, sure to stand as the definitive Berlioz biography.
In researching Berlioz's life, Cairns has had access to unpublished family papers, and in Volume I he is able to portray all the people close to Berlioz in his boyhood, and to evoke a detailed picture of their lives in and around La Côte St.-André in the foothills of the French Alps. No artist's achievement connects more directly with early experience than that of Berlioz, whose passionate sensibility began to absorb the material of his art long before he had heard any musical ensemble other than the local town band. Volume I also traces the student years in Paris and Italy and discusses Berlioz's three great love affairs, shedding remarkable light on his later character and development. Volume I ends on the afternoon of December 9, 1832, the day of the concert that launched the composer's career.

Brilliant portrait of a complex man, vol. 1.......2004-01-27
An amazing biography. A work such as this will most likely appeal to only 1 out of 100,000 Amazon customers, but those who read it will never forget it, and once having read it will listen to Berlioz's music with a knowing insider's grin.
Cairns has done what is extremely difficult: he has created an easy-to-read, engaging, yet methodical and thorough modern biography in English of a composer who was born 200 years ago and whose paper trail was written entirely in French. The book has good humor but is not fawning or hagiographic.
A little note (pun intended): this is about Berlioz the man, and not about Berlioz as an ethnomusicologist's project. In other words, this is the study of a young man and how he came to know and create music, but not about that music per se.
Bonne lecture!
Great Scholar.......2001-09-20
David Cairns is a great Berlioz scholar. Like to meet him someday. His translation of "Memoirs" is much superior to Newmans.I bought the 1st volume of the biography some years ago when it first came out and the second a couple of years ago when it was first published. I revisit these volumes frequently. Berlioz was one of the really great romantics. At least 50 years before his time. Glad to see SF opera is planning on staging Cellini & B & B over the next few years. Sixtus Beckmesser
Incredible........2000-05-14
This really is one of the best biographies of any subject to come my way.I didn't know a lot of Berlioz's music before approaching this but it didn't actually matter. All the elements of a gripping novel are here only for they're true!-fighting paternal disapproval, living in poverty in Paris, eloping with a virtuoso pianist-it's all here and Cairns paints such an intimate picture that you can't but fail to admire Berlioz and his dogged determination to be a composer and write HIS music only to be continually rebuked in his native homeland. The efforts that the man had to go to just to hear his own music is truly heartbreaking.Biography doesn't get much better than this-especially if you're only even remotely interested in music or art.
A Passionate Man.......2000-04-25
This is a wonderful book both for the lay reader and for the musically knowledgeable. It says a great deal about how well written this book is that someone like me who knows nothing about music could still enjoy the book so much. Mr. Cairns takes the tale from the birth of Berlioz in 1803 up until 1832, when he was in his late 20's. You learn about his relationship with his parents, who were opposed to his choice of composer for a career, and his sisters. We are very fortunate that this was a great age for letter writing. Mr. Cairns makes judicious use of the correspondence between Berlioz and his family and friends to the point where you almost feel yourself to be a friend or family member. You get inside the young composer's mind as he tries to convince his parents that his desire to write music is not just a "whim", but something that he is absolutely passionate about and must do. Berlioz was also extremely sensitive and romantic. After seeing the English actress Harriet Smithson perform on stage in several works by Shakespeare he developed an obsessive love for her, even though he had never met her. He had an apartment across the street from where she lived and would longingly watch her comings and goings. He eventually wrote her several notes expressing his feelings but she rebuffed him, quite understandably one would think! (She had also heard a rumor, which was untrue, that he was an epileptic.) Shortly after coming to the realization that Smithson was unattainable Berlioz met the virtuoso pianist Camille Moke and they fell in love with each other and eventually got engaged. Alas, when poor Hector had to go to Rome to live in order to receive grant money from winning the Prix de Rome, Camille dumped him and opted for security by marrying a wealthy man. This soured Hector on women for awhile but did not diminish his love for music, nature and life. Mr. Cairns has been a professional music critic and is also a scholar, so he understands and ably explains the technical aspects of Berlioz's music. I was totally lost in these sections but my ignorance did not diminish my enjoyment of this sympathetic and wonderfully written book.

Thorough research and excellent writing.......1997-02-16
Berlioz - Volume One: The Making of an Artist, was previously published by Cardinal in 1989. The book is an extraordinary achievement - one of the most thoroughly researched and best written biographies I have ever read. Cairns, of course, is a (perhaps, the) preeminent Berlioz scholar, and has already written other fine books on Berlioz and liner notes for numerous recordings of Berlioz's music. The book is liberally sprinkled with excerpts of critiques of his music from several of his contemporaries, enlightening quotations from letters to and from Berlioz, facsimiles of manuscript pages, and photographs of friends, lovers, musical acquaintances and antagonists. Cairns approach in this book has been to assemble seemingly all pertinent facts from a diversity of sources, and explain their full importance and relevancy intelligently and honestly. His writing is lively but clear and concise, allowing a full, and often revelatory image of Berlioz to step forward and assume center stage. Cairns, unselfishly, therefore, is most concerned with projecting Berlioz's personality, and not his own. This book made be extremely anxious for its sequel (covering the remainder of Berlioz's life), but unfortunately, it has not yet appeared

great daria book.......2005-08-13
This isn't a book about the history of daria or an episode guide. That stuff's been done to death. This is very original. It has letters written by the characters, Jane's artwork, photos, and stuff like that. I highly recommend this book to all daria fans!
THIS IS THE SECOND BEST BOOK I EVER READ!.......2005-02-28
The Daria Database is full of sarcastic funny remarks. it is totally accurate about the Daria universe. the quinn remarks are fantastic and it includes every character. i strongly recomend this book and it's predercester The Daria Daries. it is a must have to anybody who is a daria fan or who has ever even seen an episode of this great and witty show.
this is the best book ever.......2001-07-22
The book is really good if your a big daria fan. It has all of the characters and also a lot of funny quotes from Quinn and Daria. I would get this book and the daria daries which is also a good book for big Daria fans.
This is an OK book.......2000-11-07
I read this along with the Beavis and Butthead book(see my Beavis and Butthead review). The "Daria Database" is much more sarcastic. Although it was much more sarcastic, the Beavis and Butthead book was much funnier.
It was eh...OK I suppose.......1999-10-20
I enjoyed many of the pages, but yet I felt myself disappointed due to the lack of information on Jane. Get more Jane info, darn it!

In The Mother Trip, her follow-up to the cult classic, The Hip Mama Survival Guide, Ariel Gore offers the kind of down-to-earth, truthful mothering conversations that you'd expect to have with a best girlfriend. In this collection of essays--some lasting one page, some stretching to five--Gore deftly spotlights the messy corners of motherhood: sleeplessness, depression, weird pregnancy dreams, the restless hunger for creativity, and the passionate love of children. This is comforting turf, especially for mothers who have felt patronized and bored by the numerous advice-laden mothering manuals on the market. Gore mixes straight talk with dreamier musings, using sensual details and thoughtful subtext to illuminate the spirituality of motherhood. (Her essay about being 19, pregnant, and living with a transient boyfriend in Italy is a masterfully crafted gem.) A sexy, political, and highly conscious mother who refuses to diminish herself, Gore is one of the best mothering role models to show up on the written page. In the essay "Children Need Interesting Mothers," she writes,
We need time to ourselves, moments of awareness, connections, meaningful work. We need cheap art, good sex, nights at the bowling alley and days at the beach. We need good coffee, hearty meals, lush gardens and time to relax and enjoy our lives without worrying so much that we are good enough mothers or skinny enough girlfriends or wives. We need to take care of ourselves so that we can mother our children soulfully and lead lives worth living.
Amen, sister. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
In her last book, outspoken urban mom Ariel Gore offered help for real-world mothers. In The Mother Trip, she gives her inspiration, encouragement, and moral support to unconventional moms. In these essays, she bashes the stereotype of the "good mother" and encourages readers to follow their instincts and redefine motherhood in their own terms.

Yay for Hip Mamas!.......2007-04-12
This book is awesome. Funny, smart and a really quick read.... After wading through at least 40 baby books and childrens books this one really got me. Strait talk, lots of laughs, I highly reccommend this book!
Really helped me............2006-07-21
get through that first month! lol I got it when my son was just born and I was having a serious hard time adjusting and newborns HARD HARD work. Very overwhelming. Some of the stories in here made me laugh and look at things in a different perspective, just what I needed!
What's the Point?.......2005-12-05
I am currently expecting my first child, so maybe I don't have enough first-hand knowledge to really appreciate the message here, but halfway through, I started to feel mildly irritated by this book. Three quarters of the way through, I was actively disgusted, though I can't put my finger on exactly why. I bought this book thinking that it would provide a good counter-balance to a lot of the mainstream parenting literature that wants us to believe that parenting is all joy, all the time. What I got from this is a sense of Ariel Gore's tremendous self-promotion and self-involvement, and a vague and unsettling sense of feeling like I'm doing something wrong for being in a standard-issue and happy heterosexual marriage. As we're reminded frequently, Gore was unwed and backpacking through Europe when she became pregnant. I get the impression that to her mind, we should all be so hard-pressed by circumstances, rather than, say, making an informed and well-timed decision to become parents.
There are a lot of suggestions in the book about taking time for yourself, and not ignoring your spirit and creativity. I agree with the sentiment whole-heartedly, and would have appreciated some insight into the practical implications of how we are to go about doing that. Instead, what we are presented with is a series of poorly-written and half-formed notions of "self-time," with no real insight into the actual reality of having to provide for the care and feeding of your child in your absence. She seems content to sort of noodle her way through a notion, leave off without a conclusion, and remind us how very healthy she is for being able to drop everything to pay attention to her own needs.
I'm not impressed with her or her message, and frankly, I don't understand the great groundswell of support that she appears to enjoy. While her take on motherhood is a different one from what you're most likely to find in mainstream media, that doesn't make it worthwhile by default. There is nothing helpful in this book, and there is no support to be found in a book that just sort of leaves you feeling unimaginative and boring for not having art projects to attend to or never having been on welfare. It's the mother-guilt that she so rails against, just packaged in a more deceptively colorful package.
Fantastic!.......2005-10-17
I loved this book. Ariel Gore made me feel empowered, encouraged and important. There was no "expert advice." Nobody telling me that what I am doing is too much or not enough. I felt justified and understood. As soon as I finished reading The Mother Trip, I lent it to my friend, a mother of two. I think every mother should read this book.
It's not a parenting book.......2005-04-03
If you are looking for a book to teach you about parenting, then this is not it. This book is about one womans life as a mother, and it is very enjoyable.
She made me laugh out loud in a few spots, and even though I don't agree with everything she has to say on the subject, I did think this was a very good read.

A Girl's Guide to Keeping Her Money........2007-06-14
I am always on the lookout for funny scripts for females to do for the Dramatic events in Debate. This book failed my expectations and hardly lived up to rave reviews. Maybe I'm a member of the wrong generation, but I didn't find any of the jokes funny and I found it boring and lacking in any depth at all. There's no plot, no solution, there's not even much characterization. I'd say if you'd like to buy a funny book, look somewhere else.

Brilliant Story Design book.......2006-03-22
This is perhaps the most brilliant story design book ever written. It is destined to be a classic and a must read book for all screenwriters. It takes the theory of screenwriting to a completely higher level than anything ever written by McKee, Field or Seger. Stefanik is an innovator who focused of the principles of creating emotional reactions in the audience, years ahead of such derivative works as Iglesias. Stefanik gives constuctive techniques that a script writer can use to create excitement and unpredictability in stories. He draws on examples from the most popular event tentpole movies of the past twenty years, those which he rightly calls megahits. His seminal theories are being recognized by the Oxford International Festival of Films, where he is scheduled to speak in the Sheldonian Theater in May 2006. Empty.......2003-03-19
I'm stunned by all the people that recommend this book. Yes, it doesn't talk about formatting, or the three act structure, or snappy dialog. But it says almost nothing valuable about what it professes to educate on. It's a constant reminder, near dogmatic, of simple statements: "Your audience must like the protagonist." "You should have a payoff at the end of the script." Well, no kidding.
The other flaw of this book is how little it takes into account of why these megahit films TRULY succeeded. A huge rash of them were surrounded by enormous hype and marketing. Sometimes upwards of $100 million alone in advertising. Independence Day was sold on the concept of the trailer alone, and went into production before even one word was typed on a page. What are the chances that the rules that applied to those films, will apply to the spec script you are trying to break in with? Even if he did clearly explain those rules, which I felt he did not.
Skip this book. I won't recommend any other books, but I'll recommend something else. I'll recommend to you what Mike Rich did before he came out of nowhere to win the Nicholl's and sell his first script,[...] Read spec scritps and early drafts if possible. And read the scripts that not only succeed, but succeeded not on raw financing power, but on merit.
The Alternative.......2002-11-24
The Megahit Movies by Richard M. Stefanik is the alternative to the traditionally structured screenplay. If you are interested in the principles of story design and construction, the Megahit Movies is the book to read. I found it to be interesting how he structured his book because I have actually seen movies that complied to a similar pattern. Stefanik starts off the body of his book by introducing the protagonist-the hero, the antagonist-the villain and then the love interest-the girl. Once he establishes who the major players are, he begins to expound on audience empathy. He is detailed in expressing that the filmmaker must get the audience to love the protagonist and absolutely loathe the antagonist. Although the villain is shown as having more power than the hero and as the one who creates dangerous obstacles, Stefanik alerts the reader to the importance of establishing supportive emotions in the audience for the protagonist. He touches on the motivation, objectives, decisions, codes of behavior and personality of each character. The Megahit Movies teaches you how to establish plot, subplot, events, action and scene structure. He substantiates his argument by making reference to the blockbuster movies such as Batman, The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Forrest Gump, which seem to employ this particular method. I highly recommend this book to all filmmakers, screenwriters and novelists. It is a healthy alternative the the Three Act structure. Megahit Movies is indeed a megahit. Kudos!
A Brilliant Book.......2002-05-22
The MEGAHIT MOVIES book is probably the most brilliant book ever written on Story Design, and will outlast the books written by Robert McKee, Syd Field and Linda Seger. Stefanik breaks new ground by focusing on the psychology of the audience and arguing for the position that movies are popular because they create an "emotionally satisfying experience" for the audience. But he gives so much more in this book: by applying the cognitive theory of emotions to popular movies, he gives the writer concrete techniques for placing characters into situations that will elicit specific emotions in the audience. This is something that McKee, Seger or Field never discuss.
Stefanik also introduces the importance of SUBGOALS in the creation of PLOT TWISTS as a tool for creating unpredictable stories, a topic not even discussed in any previous screenwriting text.
Then there is Stefanik's theory of humor in which he provides writers with specific instructions on how to create humorous dialogue, characters, and scenes, topics not included in the books by the above mentioned story gurus. It should also be mentioned that THE MEGAHIT MOVIES book is an expanded version of Stefanik's book, STRUCTURES OF FANTASY, in which he published all of these ideas in 1992, five years before Robert McKee published his book STORY, in 1997.
Stefanik's THE MEGAHIT MOVIES book is destined to become a classic text on the craft of story design, comparable in influence to Lajos Egri's THE ART OF DRAMATIC WRITING.
Buy the book. It is great!

GREAT BOOK!!!.......2006-04-22
I love cross sums, and I love this book. The puzzles are just hard enough to really make you think before you can complete them. Perfect!!
The right level of challenge in the puzzles.......2004-01-04
A cross sum puzzle is similar to a crossword puzzle, in that it is formed by putting together interconnected rectangular sections that are across and down. However, for a cross number puzzle, the entries are digits rather than letters. Instead of clues for words, the parameters are the sum of the digits in the rectangular sections. Furthermore, no digit can appear twice in a particular horizontal or vertical section.
The approach to solving these puzzles is similar to that used in solving crossword puzzles. First identify a location where there are few options. For example, when there are only two digits and the sum is 15 or greater, then there are at most two options for the pair of numbers. Without such a reduction in the possibilities, there is a combinatorial explosion that can be overwhelming.
I found the puzzles in this book to be challenging, but not overwhelmingly so. The restrictions are loose enough to create difficulty and tight enough to make it reasonable. By first scanning the entire puzzle searching for the sweet spot where the restrictions are greatest, I was able to solve most of the puzzles in a short time. In some cases, I found it necessary to resort to algebra in order to represent and understand the options.

No look inside.......2007-02-22
Did not purchase.....there was no look inside to see if it was what I was looking for
This book is only for those who want to sell more..........2006-10-17
Are you a person who wants to sell a product or a service?
If so, I heartily recommend this book.
This book is for rank beginners and seasoned pro's. For beginners, it is an excellent introduction to the world of sales. For the seasoned pro, it is an excellent checksheet to make sure that all the bases are covered before going into that "big deal".
This book is a book about "sales think". That is, how to think in terms of making sales.
Also, this book is easy to read and because it is easy to read, I can easily imagine that some people might "skim" right through it and totally miss the incredible depth that is contained within this book.
For example, sales people know that people buy based on emotion not logic. Yet, sales people everywhere continue to use logic to sell. Why do they do this? It's because they don't know how to create emotion. My point is, on page 64 Mr. Sugarman shares a portion of an ad that he wrote. Within it is embedded the secret to creating emotion that sells.
I'll wager that the few people who've given this book a poor rating never even saw the real message and the real depth of this book.
