Schiele Drawings: 44 Works (Dover Art Library)
ASIN: 0300097484 |
Book Description
The Austrian artist Egon Schiele (1890--1918) is renowned for his intensely confrontational portraits, self-portraits, erotic images, and allegories. What is less well known today is that Schiele was also a talented and prolific landscape painter. These fascinating landscapes, however, are now gaining the attention of scholars and the art world. Indeed, Landscape at Krumau (1916) by Schiele recently sold at auction in London for about $20 million. In this beautifully illustrated and engaging book, Kimberly A. Smith provides the first full examination of Schiele's landscapes and townscapes, offering a new approach to and insights into the artist's work and motivations. Diverging from the conventional interpretation that Schiele's paintings are revelations of the artist's psychology and emotional experience, Smith focuses instead on how his landscapes relate to the political, social, and historical conditions in early-twentieth-century Austria. As Smith argues, Schiele's extraordinary landscape paintings are marked by a dialectic of resignation and renewal and convey the character of Viennese modernism itself.
Customer Reviews:
Pure landscape.......2007-05-23
This is a beautiful book on this sometimes overlooked aspect of Egon Schiele's work. It is divided into five chapters, the aim of which is to place these landscapes in the historical and sociological context of early-twentieth-century Vienna: the influence of the Gothic, of nationalism, of the idea of death, of the anxiety brought about by the mechanization of the modern world, summed up, how they are the product of the Viennese culture of the period. The author also studies them on a more purely aesthetic point of view in the second chapter, basing her analysis on the expression "pure landscape" used by one of Schiele's first collectors and patrons.
A valuable addition to the literature on the artist, with many first-rate illustrations of rarely seen works..

Product Description
This is an encyclopaedic study of English dress from the fifth to the eleventh centuries, drawing evidence from archaeology, text and art, and taking account of re-enactors' experience. It examines archaeological textiles, cloth production and the significance of imported cloth and foreign fashions. Dress is discussed as a marker of gender, ethnicity, status and social role, and its contemporary significance in terms of symbolism and stylistic messaging is examined - whether Anglo-Saxons were dressing a corpse for its (pagan) grave, condemning frivolous dress among persons in holy orders, bequeathing their own clothes or commissioning them for a king. The book discusses what modern observers can and cannot deduce from medieval representations of clothing, questioning stereotypes. Generously illustrated with 25 plates (12 colour) and 140 drawings, it demonstrates clothing in contemporary art (manuscripts, ivories, metalwork, stone sculpture, mosaics), and focuses! on surviving dress fasteners and accessories, explaining types and geographical/chronological distribution. There are colour reconstructions of early Anglo-Saxon dress and a cutting pattern for a gown from the Bayeux tapestry (by Robin Netherton). Old English garment names are discussed throughout and a glossary is appended. It updates and develops the author's groundbreaking Dress in Anglo-Saxon England in 1986, adding many new illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
An Amazing Concentration of Information.......2005-03-16
This revised edition of Dr. Owen-Crocker's 1986 book does not disappoint. It incorporates vast amounts of new research, archaeological material, and reenactor feedback and includes many more illustrations as well as reconstruction sketches and intelligent discussion of the available evidence for Anglo-Saxon costume between the fifth and eleventh centuries. A must-have reference for any Anglo-Saxon scholar, as well as for anyone with a serious interest in northern European costume during the so-called "Dark Ages."

Product Description
This archaeological study of textiles and costume considers all aspects of Early Anglo-Saxon clothing - how textiles were made in the Early Anglo-Saxon settlements, how the cloth was fashioned into garments, and the nature of the clasps and jewellery with which the clothes were worn. It is both a practical guide to the manufacture of clothing and a review of the significance of textiles and costume within Anglo-Saxon society.
Drawing from a database of 3,800 finds, the book includes a review of the primary evidence from 162 Anglo-Saxon cemeteries, where small fragments of the dead's clothes have been preserved with brooches, pins and necklaces.
Regional styles of dress, the social and cultural meaning behind changing fashions, the role of women in textile production, and Scandinavian and Continental influences help place the study in its broader historical and archaeological context.
This book will be suitable for general readers, undergraduate students, and re-enactors, as well as archaeologists excavating sites of the period and those working in the heritage industry on the reconstruction of Anglo-Saxon life.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent use of extensive archaological research.......2007-06-02
In this book, Professor Rogers has used her substantial archaeological knowledge and experience to give the reader clothing reconstructions for the early Anglo-Saxon period that comport with the most recent evidence. Richly illustrated, the book is a prime example of how archaeology can (but seldom does) enrich the study of costume. If the book has a flaw, it lies in the fact that Professor Rogers's use of period art to support hypotheses about period costume is not quite as skilled or persuasive as her archaeological analysis.

Dress in Anglo Saxon England.......2000-11-14
This is a wonderfully thorough, academic book. It breaks male and female dress into eras, and then examines clothing form, fabric, and accessories in a very scholarly manner. The author is not afraid to note when the record is unclear, and equally unafraid to give her own opinion. The index and bibiliography are extensive. At the same time, the book is very readable and well written, and easy for non-academics (such as myself) to follow. This book is _the_ source for Anglo Saxon costume recreationists.

Customer Reviews:
If you want a Pokemon manga thats cute and funny..........2003-05-31
... then you should get this one! This is the first and only shojo Pokemon manga that has been made, and it's great! The main character is Hazel, a love-sick blonde girl that is desperately trying to win the affections of Almond, the boy that she has a crush on. The problem is, Almond seems to only think about one thing: Catching Pokemon. So Hazel goes to her grandpa, a diminuitive fellow, and asks him to make her a love potion. Unfortunately for Hazel, the love potion doesn't work while she tries to give it to Almond during a picnic. Hazel begins to get fed up with her grandpa, and he decides to give her a love potion that actually works, but for a price: He asks her to catch alot of Pokemon for him, so he can discover stuff about 'the evolution of Pokemon' and how it benefits mankind or something. Hazel agrees, and runs into a whole mess of situations. She ends up befriending a cute Pikachu, helping a Clefairy gain some confidence, joining Jigglypuff at it's baloony party, discover Tangela's secret, and spending Christmas with her loved ones. This graphic novel also includes 3 bonus stories, and 3 'bonus bonuses', in which one of it's hillarious scenarios unites the Magical Pokemon Journey cast with the cast of the Pokemon anime, Ash, Misty, and Brock.
If you like shojo manga, or the humorous side of Pokemon, you should get this book before Viz stops publishing it.
Magical Pokemon Journey.......2002-02-01
The Magical Pokemon Journey manga is quite entertaining for those of you who are into shoujo (or 'girly' manga n_n). I will suggest this one to fans of all ages. This is, by far the best Pokemon manga Iv gotten my hands on. Cuter snd more original than the manga by Toshihiri Ono and Pokemon Adventures.
I never really thought I'd like something Pokémon ...........2002-01-13
I never really thought I'd like something Pokémon .... but then again I didn't think I'd like Gundam Wing and Fushigi Yugi either .. you never can tell what you do or don't like until you try it. I think I just proved this to be the truest thing of all.
See my grandmere knows I like manga and anime so I guess she put it upon herself to find me some this Christmas, well you know grandmothers ... all the anime she knew of was Sailor Moon and Pokémon, (and she only knew of Sailor Moon because I've been obsessed with Sailor moon since I was about ten) so what she came up with was a couple of really nasty looking Sailor Moon dolls which are virtually noseless (despite the fact that I'm [age] years old I still somehow always wind up with dolls ^-^ not that I mind though ... shh ... me and Rose still play with all our anime dolls!!) and of course this Pokémon manga, I decided to read it because even if I'm not exactly a Pokémon fan the cover was adorable and I loved it! Read it if you are a shoujo fan, or just a plain fan of cute manga, you will enjoy it.
.....
A different world of Pokemon!.......2001-05-05
I've watched the animated series, I've played the game, I've read the comics but I've never ever seen a comic about Pokemon that is sooo adorable as this! This is what I want! I've been searching for this kind comic. So cute, so funny and so...wonderful! I never thought anyone could make Pikachu any cuter than he is already.
WONDERFUL!!!!.......2001-04-21
...
This is a story about a girl named Hazel who wants a (working) love potion to make the guy of her dreams, Almond, hers. To do this she must go around collecting Pokemon for her Grandpa. She meets lots of Pokemon (four of which can speak human language) and has lots of adventures.
There are three bonus stories, and three bonus bonuses. The former three are like normal stories, and the latter three are special thingamajigs.
There's also a one-page preview of Journey Two, which I am SO buying after seeing how good Journey One was!!!

Book Description
Hollywood Fantasies of Miscegenation analyzes white fantasies of interracial desire in the history of popular American film. From the first interracial screen kiss of 1903, through the Production Code's nearly thirty-year ban on depictions of "miscegenation," to the contemplation of mixed marriage in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), this book demonstrates a long, popular, yet underexamined record of cultural fantasy at the movies.
With ambitious new readings of well-known films like D.W. Griffith's 1915 epic The Birth of a Nation and of key forgotten films and censorship documents, Susan Courtney argues that dominant fantasies of miscegenation have had a profound impact on the form and content of American cinema.
What does it mean, Courtney asks, that the image of the black rapist became a virtual cliché, while the sexual exploitation of black women by white men under slavery was perpetually repressed? What has this popular film legacy invited spectators to remember and forget? How has it shaped our conceptions of, and relationships to, race and gender?
Richly illustrated with more than 140 images, Hollywood Fantasies of Miscegenation carefully attends to cinematic detail, revising theories of identity and spectatorship as it expands critical histories of race, sex, and film. Courtney's new research on the Production Code's miscegenation clause also makes an important contribution, inviting us to consider how that clause was routinely interpreted and applied, and with what effects.

Bleh.......2005-11-20
First I should state that I do, in fact, love Ravenloft as a campaign setting. I also love the novel Frankenstein. So I thought it would be a good idea to run a game involving Mordenheim and Adam and it would be helpful to read the novel about them first. Well, while the novel did add to the characters from the source material but it didn't do anything else. It just felt like I was reading a long source book on two NPCs that pretends to be a novel. The story really isn't based on Mary Shelly's Frankenstein but rather the Frankenstein archetype. Mordenheim has a hunchbacked assistant, he loves science, hates philosophy, built Adam out of bodies stolen from graves, made him live from a lightining bolt, etc. It is poorly written, I am unsure if the author is a high school graduate. It's not terribly entertaining either.
I would only suggest buying this book if you plan on running a Ravenloft game and want to use the characters of Mordenheim and Adam. It does greatly expand upon their backstories and personalities. Even then I should caution that it is a terrible novel.
A wonderful re-imagining of a classic tale.......2003-10-21
This retelling of the old Frankenstein story is more psychological than most horror novels, but also has its share of really weird and scary scenes. If you like classic horror, you should eat this one up.
Ugh.......2002-12-11
I really don't know what the other reviewers are talking about, as I had the distinct feeling I had read this book about a dozen times. Adam is interesting, the two "heroes" are not. The good doctor has some interesting points, but rather than expand upon them the author sort of drifts about between the monster and the doctor telling their tale intersprsed with the action. Thus the book starts out in third person, goes to first, then back to third, and then back to first, then back to third. It makes for disjointed reading. The 2 necromancers are boring. This book is not distinctive enough to set it apart from its source material. Mordenhiem is not particularly evil either, he is more indifferent than he is evil. His biggest crime is being self absorbed. Check out the original tale, skip this version.
Great book in the tradition of Frankenstein.......1998-10-17
If you like traditional horror stories and fantasy novels, this is a great read. Williamson expands on the Frankenstein plot and even works in a lot of the philosophy of the Shelley novel, but you never feel like you are reading the same book.
New additions to the legend include werewolves, gypsies, flesh golems, and Jack London-type treks across dangerous plains of ice.
A great book is one you don't want to put down, long after you should have been asleep. This is such a book!
An excellent take on Frankenstein with a fine literary twist.......1998-09-05
Ravenloft has done it again: taken an old story and made it better. This time, the victim is Frankenstein, though the way this one resolves itself is quite different than your grandfather's walking behemoth. Adam- the flesh golem (the best term to describe Frankenstein's monster in RL) Darklord of Lamordia -is the villain (sort of) in this tale, though it is his creator, Dr. Victor Mordenheim, whom I saw as the true Evil and more deserving of the curse than Adam.
Perhaps the best thing about the book, though, was the fact that it takes place far after the inception of Lamordia, but doesn't leave you guessing. At no less than three points in the book do you receive an account of past times that dictated the final outcome, two of them being the same story, only from two greatly different vantage points. The best part about it, though, is that all three are told in first person, without any quotes, chapter by chapter, but as part of the storyline- which is, other than these instances, in complete third person.
The characters were fantastic, and though it took more than half the book for him to arrive, the true masterwork in this novel was Ivan Dragonov, the loup-garou ranger. Williamson did a fine job, too, with the use of firearms (which do exist in Lamordia) and the Vistani, especially their wrath upon an unwitting, unwilling servant.
So, to finish my rambling, Mordenheim is an excellent read and a fine novel. I say cheers to it, and cannot wait for another book by the author.

GREAT INSIGHTS!.......2007-01-09
Bennett does and excellent job of giving an overview of how to run a daycare facility. I have found this book insightful and useful in my day-to-day operations.
Excellent resource!.......2006-12-25
I got this book to learn about the dog daycare business and it has great tips and ideas that the average person wouldn't think about. I learned a great deal about dog daycares and how to set one up. The author is definitely very well versed in the business and I don't doubt her credibility in the business.
The ONLY disappointing thing about this book is the number of grammatical errors like: if instead of in, an instead of as, etc. Things that spell check doesn't recognize.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking information on the dog daycare business, the only downfall is the need for a better proofreader.
