Book Description
Fabled for her sexual allure and cunning intelligence, Cleopatra VII of Egypt has fascinated generations of admirers and detractors since her tumultuous life ended in suicide in 30 B.C. The last of the Ptolemaic monarchs who had ruled Egypt for three centuries, Cleopatra created her own mythology. She became an icon in her own lifetime and a legend after her death.
This lavishly illustrated catalogue coincides with a major international exhibition celebrating images of Cleopatra. It explores how she was depicted during her own era, in works ranging from coins to life-size sculpture. Exciting new discoveries are featured--including seven Egyptian-style statues believed to represent Cleopatra, and two portraits probably commissioned while she was living in Rome with Julius Caesar. The book also examines interpretations of Cleopatra from the Renaissance to modern times, as seen in paintings, ceramics, jewelry, plays, operas, and film. In addition, recent archaeological finds from Alexandria (Cleopatra's capital) and from Rome illustrate aspects of life in Cleopatra's day.

Excellent primary resource on Cleopatra VII.......2007-05-07
This is THE book that try to find the real Cleopatra VII. It has tons of photographs on historical artificts, either they were real portraits of her, image inspired from her, or artificts long mis-identified the image as her, or the artificts from her time, this book carries the invaluable information that is hard to find them anywhere else. And this book carries scholars essays that analyse and discuss all the aspects about this famous pharaoh. Great refernece book for anyone who wants to find historical, non-fictional information about her.
Cleopatra Comes To Life Again, After 2000 Years.......2005-10-12
This book, I would say, is the best book I have read, (and that's a lot) on the Ptolemaic Period and Egypt's last and fateful Macedonian Queen, who died for her ambition, and desire to restore her country as major power. She was brave enough to challenge the enslaving and powerful force of Rome, and dreamed of an independant Egyptian Empire. But her attempt to achieve her goal cost her her life, and her country.
After her death, the Romans destroyed most representations of her. They overlooked, however, the many exquisite Egyptian-style statues of the queen, however, and instead destroyed what would have been the many classical depictions of her, which are lost to the Romans wrath. But fortunately, the Egyptian art survived the centuries, and with these gorgeous and mysterious representations of the living goddess herself, Susan Walker, with the help of the British Museum, has pieced together an accurate and enthralling portrait of her eventful life.
The sections, on subjects such as Alexandria, The Ptolemies, and Cleopatra and Rome, this book contains dozens of well-written and powerful essays on the monarch's life and relationship, and also Egypt at the time. Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of full color images of Egyptian style artwork depicting the queen, and also many statues of the people that influenced her life such as her lovers Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, and her nemesis, the enigma Octavian, later to be Augustus, the first emperor of Rome.
I recommend very strongly this book to anyone at all interested in Egyptian, Greek, or Roman history, and art. An unearthly account of the last years of Egyptian power.
Great resource for Cleopatra.......2002-10-19
If pressed, I'd almost say that this is the single best book on Cleopatra. Granted, there are critical biographies, historical accounts, and all sorts of other sources, but this massive book is unique in that it shows nearly every sculpture, coin, or papyrus that can be tied directly to Egypt's last independent ruler. Its fascinating to finally see how Cleopatra presented herself to her subjects -- in traditional Egyptian style for the local population, in Greek style to the Greco-Roman world at large. It's also sobering to see how little remains of her reign. The Romans went after her Greek-style statues, but since they didn't understand Egyptian art, many works of art in that style survive. Besides the impressive visuals, the book includes important essays on many different parts of Cleopatra's reign, life in Alexandria, and the legends that have swirled around Cleopatra after her death. A good comprehensive look at this famous queen, scholarly and readable. But boy, those visuals...!

Loeb and Sale tackle the HULK.......2007-08-15
If you have read any of the other comic character studies by these guys, you know what you're in for. If not, this is a fine place to start. the art is incredible. it has an old school, art deco feel, bu in a modern way. the story is an interesting exploration on the origin of the incredible hulk. highly recommended!
great read.......2007-07-18
exciting from beginning to end. gives a better understanding for the hulk and his supporting cast. loeb & sale never fail in bringing comic book gold.
Gray Matter.......2007-07-06
Gray is a well written, well drawn reexamination of the Hulk's origin.
Using a Sopranos psychiatry session narrative device, author Jeph Loeb explores the rise of the Hulk and the complex relationship the gray giant has with Bruce Banner, Betty and General Ross.
Tim Sale's artwork is its usual "brutish beauty", employing Milleresque linework and mood. Matt Hollingsworth's coloring is fantastic and really compliments Sale's minimalist style.
Bruce Banner's end of story epiphany is sobering and kind of depressing. An excellent work and well worth the ticke price.
Smashing.......2007-07-05
I haven't been too fond of the Marvel work from long time collaborating partners Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, but Hulk: Gray has gotten a worse rep here than it deserves. Hulk: Gray is better than Spider-Man: Blue and Daredevil: Yellow, and continues the color schemed, emotion laced look at Marvel's iconic heroes. Hulk: Gray finds Bruce Banner recounting what happened after transforming into the Incredible Hulk to Doc Samson as Loeb examines the world set up by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby way back when, as well as just what drives Banner, his love Betty Ross, her father General Ross, and Banner's unlikely ally Rick Jones. What makes Hulk: Gray work so well is the territory that Lee and Kirby paved before that Loeb mines, re-works, and pays homage to while putting his own spin on the events. Tim Sale's artwork is exquisite as well. Pay no attention to the negative reviews panning Sale's work, as his Hulk is more akin to Kirby's original Frankenstein's monster-esque vision of science run amok. All in all, Hulk: Gray is by far the best of the Marvel, color coded works from Loeb and Sale, and is definitely worth picking up for Hulk fans.
Not their best work.......2007-03-05
The comics-writing team of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale have certainly made a splash in the industry, creating some landmark stories for both DC and Marvel in recent years. They have their detractors as well as their rabid fans; I fall somewhere in the middle, enjoying some work while believing other productions to have missed the mark.
That brings us to "Hulk: Gray," a collected miniseries that addresses the beginnings of the Hulk's existence -- before he turned green. This one, I fear, is a flop.
Probably the biggest failing here is the art. Sale's distinctive style doesn't lend itself well to the Hulk, who is supposed to be an awe-inspiring figure of strength and rage. Here, the Hulk has beady little eyes, splayed toes and jagged teeth, all of which makes him more comical in appearance than inspiring. If that's not enough, he looks less muscular, more pudgy. Right, those rock-hard muscles have run to fat, giving us a creature more suited to beer and pizza on the sofa than epic battles with Iron Man.
As for the story -- well, there's no denying Loeb is a talented writer. But Hulk's origins have been explored and revisited countless times in the past, and I can't see how this version adds anything of substance to the tale. Sure, it's all couched as a big, psychological exposition as Hulk's unwilling alter-ego, Bruce Banner, relates the facts of his first 48 hours to psychiatrist pal Doc Samson. But really, we already knew General Ross was obsessive, that Betty Ross had father issues, that Rick Jones had problems with authority, that Banner himself struggles with guilt, that the Hulk is simple and childlike. This isn't new ground.

Book Description
Jewish humor mirrors the minds and hearts of the Jewish people. It reflects their joys and sorrows, hopes and disappointments. Perhaps most significant, it demonstrates their willingness to poke fun at themselves, which has no doubt enabled Jews to endure centuries of hardship with head held high and a smile on their collective face.
In the Encyclopedia of Jewish Humor, hailed as a landmark work when first published, Henry D. Spalding presents delightful anecdotes, quips, jokes, and yarns featuring the colorful folk who have added spice and spirit to Jewish life from biblical to modern times. Some of the selections are pungent, many are scornful of deceit and pretense, others are alive with brotherhood. Most are just downright hilarious.
In thirty-nine chapters, Spalding allows forty centuries of Jewish life to speak through characters we have all grown to love. Here, you'll find the itinerant shnorrer who arrives in a small Lithuanian town late one Friday afternoon with no place to stay; the Yiddishe papa whose task it is to instruct little Mortie in the ways of the birds and bees; the congregant whose life's goal, it seems, is to make his rabbi miserable; the hypochondriac who complains of ailments as yet undiscovered. The author (re)introduces us to the shlemiels and shlimazls, rebbes and rebbetzins, mamas and papas, doctors and patients, marriage brokers and divorce lawyers, yeshiva students and sisterhood presidents whose peculiar antics never fail to entertain.
In the preface to this classic work, Henry Spalding writes that the surest way to destroy humor is to analyze it. So no more analyzing...Now it's time to read a little something!

The classic work on Jewish humor.......2007-02-18
This is the definitve work on all of the old Jewish stories and/or jokes which your parents knew. A must have
Encyclpedia of jewish humour.......2006-02-25
In my opinion this book should be on the shelves of every Jewish family ,not just for display but as a study and reference ,
Informative, but not funny.......2006-02-23
There is much to learn about Jewish slang and the structure of Jewish humor in this collection, but the author has a knack for taking funny material and making it sound stupid. Let me give an example by relating one of my favorite Jewish jokes, in my own words.
Hymie and Sophie owned a little convenience store in a nice Jewish neighborhood, and they made a nice living. However, the neighborhood began to change, the Jews moving to the suburbs and a wave of Catholic immigrants replaced them, working in the growing factories around the city. Their business fell to almost nothing. One day Hymie says to Sophie [please add Yiddish accent here and throughout], "you know, if we were Catholics, we would get our business back." So the next day the couple went to the local Catholic church and professed their desire to become Catholics. Father O'Reilly was suspicious and put the pair through months of study and service, but the couple pulled through with honors. On the Sunday they were to be baptized, the whole Catholic community attended, each in his or her best attire. Hymie and Sophie looked radiant. They knelt before the alter, ate the wafer, and the good Father O'Reilly blessed them. Three times to each he said, "you're a Catholic," sprinkling the water on them. There followed a great feast and celebration.
Well, business did pick up. The couple were doing so well that one day Hymie said, "You know, Sophie [add Yiddish accent] we must invite the priest to dinner." Father O'Reilly accepted with pleasure, and showed up Friday evening for dinner. The had some wine and hors d'oeuvres, and Sophie came out of the kitchen with the steaming piece de resistance: a magnificent pot roast. Father O'Reilly was horrified. "After all your studies, you don't remember that you must eat fish on Friday!" Sophie, mortified, quickly regained her composure. Taking some water from the pitcher, she stood over the pot roast, intoning "You're a fish, you're a fish, you're a fish" while sprinkling the steaming dish.
Now, that is a funny joke! Forever after, when you want to say that you can't change the leopard's spots in Jewish, you just say "You're a fish."
What is the joke like in the book? It occurs on page 61. I won't repeat the whole joke, but only the last three paragraphs. "This is disgraceful!" cried the indignant priest. "Didn't you promise to abstain from eating meat on Friday?" "Meat? Who's eating meat?" answered the other blandly. "This is gefilteh fish." "You must take me for a fool!" snapped the outraged priest. "How can anyone make fish out of meat?" "The same way you made a Catholic out of a Jew," answered the convert smoothly. "I sprinkled water on it!."
Isn't that just awful? Lots of adverbs and adjectives ("indignant" "outraged" "smoothly"...) but no subtlety. I invite someone to take these joke and restore their humor.
By the way, if you liked my version of the joke, someday I'll tell you "I Could Have Saved Mama". Now that's a funny joke.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for the basics.......2007-08-24
Wanted to know how to do some basic analysis on stocks, and this book was great. I reviewed several other books that went into exurtiating detail, which is not what I wanted. After reading this book, I can now quickly identify trend lines, bullish patterns and bear-ish patterns.
It was a simple read and highly recommend it to anyone that needs a quick and simple way to learn the 8 basic stock patterns.
Stikky Stock Charts - A MUST for first time forex starters.......2007-06-27
A very good, easy to read book that is a MUST for people starting out into the forex business!
Best introduction to charting on the market........2007-06-05
I believe this is the best introduction to charting securities that is on the market. The book starts with establishing trend lines of support and resistance and moves on to show how charts tell the story of buyers and sellers establishing patterns. All major chart patterns are explained, head and shoulders, double bottom, ascending and descending triangle, rectangles, and channels. If you know little or nothing about charting this is the place to start, you will leave this interactive book with all the basics you need to begin serious study in analyzing chart patterns. This is the book to begin with.
ONE OF THE BEST INTRODUCTION TO CHARTING........2007-05-22
This book is one of the best books for investors who have no idea how to trade stocks and the book is quite inexpensive. This book is more valuable in the knowledge you gained which will help you on your trading technique the rest of your life. Draw those lines on a chart and see how well they line up.
If you have read this book you are well ahead and more advanced in knowledge than other investors in my opinion who are still looking for this kind of book at the bookstore in search of how to trade stocks or the "Holy Grail". The only "Holy Grail" you will ever find trading stocks is yourself there is no quick fixes to learn to trade stocks it all takes lots of time and practice. Its going to take lots of work becoming a good trader since there are no free gifts on wallstreet.
An interesting Chart pattern book would recommend you to read after you have read this book.

Good Beginner Book.......2007-02-16
Good Beginner Book for people who are beginning to invest. He didn't go over the cup and handle methods that William J O'Neil knows, but this is helpful for the beginner that doesn't know a THING about investing. Got through this in about an hour, as I knew somethings but didn't want to rush, but if you are first learning about this, go through this chapter by chapter by pausing in between as suggested. You'll learn more from it.
