THE TRIMPHANT RETURN OF G.I. JOE.......2005-04-26

Marvel Comics began producing a G.I. Joe comic book back in 1982, the same year Hasbro rolled out the new 3 ¾" line of Joe action figures. The series was a big hit and would be one of Marvel's top sellers for many years and spawn several companion titles such as G.I. Joe Special Missions and G.I. Joe European Missions. But as the popularity of the toy line waned, so did the popularity of the comic and the title was finally canceled in 1994 after 155 issues. G.I. Joe lay dormant for seven years until resurrected by Devil's Due in 2001. "G.I. Joe Reinstated" re-prints those first four issues where we see the Joe team brought out of the mothballs to once again face off against arch-nemesis, Cobra. But this was not the G.I. Joe of twenty years ago which was squarely aimed at the young boys who played with the action figures. This was a grittier, edgier Joe, fully immersed in our modern world of terrorism and 9/11.

Reinstated begins deep in the Florida Everglades at the base of Dreadnok leader Zartan. Zartan hosts a meeting of Cobra dignitaries including the Cobra Commander, the Baroness, Major Bludd, Destro, Dr. Mindbender, Tomax, and Xamot. These diverse and ego-maniacal personalities instantly begin squabbling over power as the Cobra Commander presents Cobra's newest weapon...nanite technology which he claims will infect and destroy virtually anything it's introduced into, whether it's mechanical or organic. Destro manages to usurp power and imprison the Cobra Commander. But military has been keeping an eye on Zartan in the form of Snake Eyes' apprentice Kamakura, who relays his information to Joe command. After seven years the Joe team is reassembled with Duke, Flint, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Roadblock, Shipwreck, Gung Ho, Mainframe, Spirit, and more...We catch up with the Joe team and learn that Snake Eyes and Scarlett were to be married but Snake left three weeks before the wedding. We also learn rather humorously that Bazooka is no longer quite fit for active duty.

The Joe team begins their assault on Zartan's base but it is all a ruse to draw the Joe team in. Scarlett and Snake Eyes are captured and several members of the Joe team, including many new recruits are infected with the nanites. Furthermore, Cobra has begun infecting infrastructure in the U.S., hitting government installations, communications networks, and other targets, resulting in widespread damage and chaos. Cobra's plan is then to play the good guy and save the day so the government will be in their debt. The Joe team must now find a way to battle this new technology and save the men and the nation from Cobra's latest threat.

Reinstated was an extraordinary story and a great way to bring back the Joe team. Far from the more implausible Marvel stories, Reinstated handled the seven year absence logically with the various Cobra members quibbling over power. Meanwhile on the Joe side we are given some meat to the past seven years that the Joe team had been disbanded. While it would have been great to see a bit more of what's happened to the team in that time, it was at least nice to see the subject handled intelligently. And in a plot right out of today's headlines we hear that people are protesting in Washington over the Joe Teams attack on the Cobra base. Kudos to Josh Blaylock for playing up the whole sympathizing with the terrorists angle as many people today have done with Al-Quida. Steve Kurth and John Larter provide the striking artwork putting the finishing touches on this great trade collection. Devil's Due had done a great job of balancing staying true to the characters Marvel and Hasbro introduced and updating them for 21st century readers. I like having the stories aimed at a more mature audience than the "G" rated Marvel material. Clearly, G.I. Joe is in good hands at Devil's Due.

A great book for GI Joe fans worldwide. Definitely a Collector's Item!

Reinstated [is bad]!!!.......2003-04-02

I'm sure most of the people who will read this review have been fans of GI Joe: ARAH since it's inception in the early 80's like I am. I was very happy when they brought back the toy line and was equally excited when I saw the "Reinstated!" comics. I just read the book, and it was the biggest disappointment. First the story had so many holes in it. Second, too much love story, and finally inconsistency with the original GI Joe story line. There is so much I want to get into, but I will be giving the story away (and believe me, you'd thank me for it). If you give in to your curiosity and buy the comic, prepare to be very disappointed.

And Knowing is Half the Battle!!!!!.......2002-08-21

No one was more happy to see the return of GI Joe then i was. I grew up with them. I read their comic, I played with their toys, and I watched their cartoon show. i am not ashamed and enjoyed all three immensely. Even now I am older, with less free time, and fewer toys to play with, but still the return of GI Joe left me very excited. This Volume contains the first 4 issues of the new Image comic being published by Devil's Due and I have to say that it is just great!!! The comic brings us up to speed with the GI Joe team who must once again stop Cobra, and Destro, and everyone's favorite maser of disguise Zartan. The stories are all well done, and the art is simply beautiful. Mind you this not a reprint, but all brand new first run stories. So if you are a closet Joe like me. Then do yourself a favor, and pick this one up!!!! Now drop and give me 20!!

Old(er) Golf Writers Like This Book!.......2005-12-29

It has been taught to us that psychiatrists, bartenders, and cab drivers are the three
occupations that understand the most about human behavior; we can now add a fourth --
beverage cart girl. 'Secrets of a Tee Time Girl: Golfers, Scandals and the
Beverage Cart' is Nicole Kallis' softcover composition describing human and
inhumane behavior on the golf course. It is the "book of revelations" encompassing
conversations and actions by golfers when they hail down the beverage cart. Kallis' spicy, witty
style proves that she is a scribe from Venus who writes quite comfortably and naturally, as if she
has visited Mars. Readers may well want to apply sunscreen (SPF100?) before
cracking open Nicole's book -- it's HOT! Golfers and non-golfers, alike, will enjoy the book.

Enrique Granados (1867-1916) is one of the most compelling figures of the late-Romantic period in music. During his return voyage to Spain after the premiere of his opera Goyescas at New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1916, a German submarine torpedoed the ship on which he and his wife were sailing, and they perished in the waters of the English Channel. His death was mourned on both sides of the Atlantic as a stunning loss to the music world, for he had died at the pinnacle of his career, and his late works held the promise of greater things to come. Granados was among the leading pianists of his time, and his eloquence at the keyboard inspired critics to dub him the "poet of the piano." In Enrique Granados: Poet of the Piano, Walter Aaron Clark offers the first substantive study in English of this virtuoso pianist, composer, and music pedagogue. While providing detailed analyses of his major works for voice, piano, and the stage, Clark argues that Granados's art represented a unifying presence on the cultural landscape of Spain during a period of imperial decline, political unrest, and economic transformation. Drawing on newly discovered documents, Clark explores the cultural spheres in which Granados moved, particularly of Castile and Catalonia. For devotees of Spanish music, Walter Clark's biography on Isaac Albeniz was a hard act to follow, but he's done it again with this biography of Albeniz' contemporary, Enrique Granados. Clark brings both Granados and his music back to life in a brilliant work that sets new standards for musical biography.

More Accurate Info Before Purchasing.......2007-06-15

First, the cover is misleading. In Spanish it says that it's for VOICE. For some unknown reason, in English someone translated it badly into HIGH VOICE. Only a few of the songs are for high voice.

Second, the book contains songs in Basque, Gallego, and Catalan. No pronunciation guide is given for these languages. No warning is given that not all songs are in Castillian Spanish.

Third, seven of the songs are written for children.

Overall, there are three songs in Castillian that are suited for high voice.

No clarity here, just a broken refrain.......2007-05-13

One of those I really wished I could have browsed at a local store. Judging from the quotes she pulled from books listed in the bibliography, you'd be better served buying some of those. There is little that is original here, and the whole "achieve clarity" mantra comes across as an attempt to create the next BIG THING in management fads. Soon we'll all be going off on expensive training sessions to work on our clarity.

Frankly, and I know some readers won't appreciate this, I gave up detailed reading after a few pages, skimmed the rest of the chapter, skipped and skimmed around a bit more, and had had enough.

I'm clear about one thing: I wasted my money.

Luda Kopeikina has captured and provided an excellent process toward sound decision making for any individual on high performance teams and puts it together in an easy to read book. Certainly the above is nothing unique. However, thanks to the author's excellent writing and presentation skill, the book is outstandingly readable and practical. The abundance of carefully picked wise sayings, exercises, examples, techniques in individual chapters do help readers a lot to get the most of it. For those who wanna enjoy an edge in decision making, dont miss it.

The book "The Right Decision Every Time" contains concentrated and very practical methodology with intensive pace and push for personal concentration and active participation. It made me think in new ways about decision-making and the forces that drive to higher efficiency in the decision-making process. The comprehensive approach integrates mental, emotional and physical forces with conventional methods of decision-making techniques. The process of activating intuition is the key stone of this methodology as it expands human decision capabilities far beyond many conventional techniques.

Kopeikina has made a career out of studying and teaching these decision techniques, and they do appear to work. The basic premise is to put yourself into a relaxed state (she covers how that is done), and then you can follow the decision-making steps she proposes in order to make decisions with less stress, less emotional turmoil, and more clarity. Even if you're not quite ready to follow the entire methodology, the material in the book will help add some structure to your decision process. The Decision Map she uses, once you understand it, can by itself help to come up with better decisions. You set a proper objective for the decision (often an issue in itself), identify the options and constraints, list the assumptions and success factors, and then go to work. Just clarifying these elements of a decision is usually more than most people do... Each chapter has a number of real case studies from her experience, so it's pretty easy to take her teaching and apply it to real-life scenarios.

I'm not personally ready to adopt this program for my decision situations, but I can see the value in it. I don't think I'd have a problem recommending this title as a potential source for someone looking to learn better decision-making skills.
