This book looks at art and politics from a variety of standpoints, among them, the failures and successes of art and religion, globalism and economics, the dangers posed by paranioa and censorship to our vision of free expression.
Customer Reviews:
Half and half, with much worth reading.......2006-04-21
"Defending Complexity" is a compilation of thirty-four short pieces written between 1995-2005 by art critic Eleanor Heartney. These are mainly exhibition reviews published in the magazine "Art in America", with venues such as the "New York Times" and "Washington Post" also represented. About half the essays are, unfortunately, somewhat inert as reprints, being mere chronicles of a particular exhibition rather than really delving into any issue surrounding the art. The other half are more articulate. The best of these involve stimulating commentary on the art and its issues, including several discussions of art as highlighting views toward religion, the disturbing double standard of morality and morbidity accused of artists attempting to deal thoughtfully with death versus the glorification of death as a spectacle in the mass media, museum politics and the trend toward theme-park-like sensationalism, how the available imagery shapes our impressions of war, and much more. The book is not as 'governmentally' political as its cover and titling makes it seem, although it does make references to current world events in several of the essays, and Heartney purports to see a definite difference between her pre-911 and post-911 essays that isn't quite apparent on reading them. But overall, what's good in here is worth reading, vigorous and stimulating and ready to inspire some lively art conversations.
Book Description
The first career retrospective of the great Archie comics artist.
Dan DeCarlo was one of the greatest artists working in humor comics in the latter half of the 20th century. He was without a doubt the most prolific, and for that reason was often referred to as "The Jack Kirby of humor comics." But he might have been likewise compared to pinup artist Gill Elvgren for his ability to render the female form in a way that was at once funny, charming, and unbelievably sexy. DeCarlo worked mostly on wholesome all-American features like Archie's Girls Betty and Veronica and My Friend Irma, but he populated these innocent stories with his irresistibly attractive women. This unique blend of hilarious homespun humor and libido-sparking art made DeCarlo's work outshine the competition.
For nearly six decades, DeCarlo entertained the world with his special talents. Though best known as the definitive Archie Comics artist and creator of Josie and the Pussycats, DeCarlo also brought his unique style to dozens of other characters including Millie The Model, Willie Lumpkin, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Big Boy, Batman and even The Simpsons.
In 2005, Fantagraphics published The Pin-Up Art of Dan DeCarlo, a beautiful two-color knock-out of a collection featuring his best pin-ups from the 1950s/'60s Humorama digest. With Innocence and Seduction: The Art of Dan DeCarlo, Fantagraphics Books presents a fitting tribute to the life and art of one of the world's all-time best cartoonists in a wider-ranging career retrospective. DeCarlo fan, friend, and fellow cartoonist Bill Morrison has written and produced the ultimate book on this remarkable artist, lavishly designed with over 300 illustrations. Included are rare World War II-era cartoons, original Humorama pinups, seldom-seen newspaper strips, examples of his justly famous commercial comics work, and of course, lots and lots of those fabulous DeCarlo girls!

Book Description
They're all here!, the hooker, the drunk, the proctologist, the little old lady, the midget, the traveling salesman, the black guy, the Jewish mother, dirty Johnny, the redneck, Helen Keller, the Polish girl, the Chinese couple, the two lesbians, the priest, the horny divorceé, Confucious, the rabbi, Schmidlap... Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling knows them all and more. Here are the gems from the private files of the head writer and cast member of The Howard Stern Show -- the man infamous for knowing every joke there ever was. In comedy clubs from coast to coast, Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling has dared audiences to start a joke he couldn't finish. Now he takes no prisoners, spares no ethnic or social group, and exhibits not one ounce of good taste in this wildly offensive, all-inclusive, and outrageously funny collection of dirty jokes.
We hope you like this book, and if you don't we hope that the next time you bite into a jelly doughnut, there's a string hanging out of it.
Customer Reviews:
An American Classic.......2007-01-19
Jackie the Jokeman Martling is the go to guy when it comes to classic one-liners, hilarious jokes, and biting observations. We pulled the book out at Christmas dinner and had everyone laughing and red-faced at jokes about Jewish child molesters, Eskimos and snowblowers, and guys in foxholes. This book lets us laugh at ourselves without the mean streak that can be evident in today's humor. How can you tell when a man is in love? He divorces his wife! Okay, the rest are really good. Keep the book in your back pocket. You'll make a lot of friends.
Hello, and welcome back to fifth grade........2003-04-03
I'm a big fan of some of some of the most off color, raunchy, in-bad-taste humor there is, and a lot of these jokes were funny the first time I heard them... In grade school.
This book is nothing more than Blanche Knott's Truly Tasteless Jokes with a new cover, and really, that book isn't very funny once you hit puberty either.
Not Funny.......2001-03-24
This book isn't funny. It's a rehash of old jokes. Save your money.
F Jackie!!!.......2000-09-23
Yeah, these are mostly ones EVERYONE has heard. And they are funnier when you can hear 'em spoken by Jackie....go catch this guy at the clubs, a book doesn't do the man justice.
Jackie has always been funnier than Hooknose, I told you!.......2000-06-28
I always told you that my husband was funnier than Howard, this proves it to all of you. Jackie is the funniest man alive, always has been. My husband is not some old, retarded drunkm, that is a misconception, he knows how to make money, do you know how much we got making this book. Haha, the joke is on you. Robin is jealous, Howard is cheap, Fred is dangerous, Gary is ugly, Jackie makes the show and will also conquer the book world while I set my sights on Hollywood. F-Jackie, that F stands for Fenomenal, that's what my husband is. Tell Jessica if I ever see her I am going to scratch her eyes out!

William Goldman - Four Screenplays
ASIN: 0802136699 |
Book Description
The recent success of Freedomland and Clockers has established Richard Price as one of America's most accomplished novelists. Critics have praised both his uncanny ear for the cadences and pitch of dialogue and his insight into the deeper recesses of the American soul. Perhaps more than any novelist today, Price has captured the undercurrents of our culture and society. Bringing these talents to the art of screenplays, Price has also emerged as one of the foremost talents in screenwriting. Now, with this collection of his three best-known screenplays, readers can see for themselves why many movie critics have come to consider Richard Price today's most preeminent screenwriter. Introduced with a revealing interview of Price by the critic Neal Gabler, this volume includes Price's screenplays for The Color of Money (1986), which starred Paul Newman and Tom Cruise and won an Academy Award nomination for best screenplay; Sea of Love (1989), which starred Al Pacino and Ellen Barkin and became a major critical and commercial success; and Night and the City (1992), which starred Robert De Niro and Jessica Lange and again attracted rave reviews for Price's screenwriting.
Customer Reviews:
Great writing at any Price!.......2001-07-12
Screenwriting gurus are forever trying to define "great screenwriting." And screenwriting students are always asking the gurus: What is great screenwriting? I would advise guru and student alike to CUT TO the chase and pick up this book...it's a fine example of GREAT SCREENWRITING. Lean, to the point, and always moving forward.
Contemporary master.......2000-07-31
Richard Price is among the most talented of Hollywood screenwriters working today. His ability to infuse characters with even the smallest unique trait infuses them with depth and reality that few other writers are able to capture.
His recent rewrites of such scripts as "Shaft" and "Ransom" prove the level of quality he is able to bring to even the most mainstream films.

Top rate words from a concert pianist.......2003-11-25
Written ebulliently by an acclaimed pianist who's been there done that, lends definitive veracity to this guide. This is the ideal technical and interpretative Bartok manual for advanced pianists. Her detailed coverage of style, form and structure makes it useful for the listener too if you can read music and follow Nissman's copious music examples. An inset CD of music examples played by Nissman and a full discography of Bartok's own recorded performances (many now restored on to CD) are added bonuses.

Good Resource.......2001-12-24
When I first saw this book, I was curious about the coinage on the cover. Chinese coins have always been of interest to me.
But it is the content of this book that I found much more interesting. This little book is packed with information of value to anyone interested in divination.
There is a short introduction relating some history of coins being used as "Divination" tools. The "heads or tails" is the most obvious. But Mr. Buckland goes deeper, examining divination from its roots, its history and its use.
He then gives you some real "meat and potatoes" information, a complete "how to" use coins as tools for divination. No fancy coins needed, pocket change will do. And he goes from very basic "yes or no" types of divination for the beginner to some very thorough and complex multiple coin astrological divination, coins used as tarot cards and I Ching variations.
A small pocket book, yes, but don't let that be a judgement on this book. The tarot, astrological and I Ching material covered in this book make it well worth having for that alone.
Raymond Buckland has packed big things into a small package here and has given us yet another book of solid information and guidance well worth having in our libraries.

Book Description
1875. This volume discusses gems, jewels, coins and medals of ancient and modern times. At almost all times, gem engravers have cut devices on precious stones so that in fact, as jewels are gems, not all gems are jewels. They are treated the same in this work. Billings writes about the history of coins and medals, some of which are found in archeological sites. The appendix is a translation by Mrs. Billings of the Autobiography of Benedetto Pistrucci.

Customer Reviews:
A good solid resume book.......2006-01-31
No resume knocks anyone dead, but this book generally gives good advice on how to write one. In Yate's resume samples you'll sometimes see lists and bullet lists that are too long for anyone but a computer to sift through, and some of the sample resumes are a bit crowded, but all-in-all, the content is very useful. If you've thought through what kind of work you want and know who your targeted employers are, this is a good solid resume book.
Middle of the road..........2003-01-28
I didn't find any new, earth-shattering insights into the resume process, but it did layout the fundamentals nicely. I learned a few new things, and it gave me a good outline to put together a resume.
The section that describes how to pull the resume information together, would have been presented better had it been in some sort of a chart or list format. The way it is set up - it is wrtten in long sentences that stretch over a couple pages. I had to keep flipping back and forth to remember what step to do next.
There was a lot of redundant information, and I thought the examples didn't help me much.
But in the end, it did prompt me to put together a new, more concise, and tailored resume. Although the description of how to edit the final resume was a bit broad.
Too General and Elementary.......2002-09-05
Book offers too simplistic and barely entry-level formatting and ideas. The styles were all basic and not varied enough, and the jobs were all low level. I am a marketing director and the upper level resumes they had were still so basic they were not useful as examples. Might be good for high school students, though.
Top-notch advice.......2002-04-16
This book is as good as it gets. Put the time into following setp-by-step and you will have a dramatically different view of your own skills. Plus, you'll end-up with a fantastic resume.
Your book is great.......2002-02-05
I learnerd so much from this book.

Customer Reviews:
Not quite knockin' 'em dead.......2005-03-08
I used this along with "Cover Letter Magic" and "The Very Quick Job Search," and I prefer those over this one. Though certainly an improvement over the old "Enclosed please find" style, the examples throughout the book are still a bit stiff, unnecessarily wordy, and dated. There's also not as much variety as in the other books.
On meail cover letters, he gives a bit of misinformation, which suggests he may not be as up-to-speed on email limitations as he could be. Specifically, he suggests using a signature-styled font in an email. (That only works if the recipient has the same font on their PC.)
I liked the examples of "Resurrection" letters (basically a thanks for the rejection), but their use is never explained in the book, so there's nothing to suggest this tactic is effective. (The only mention in the other books is in "Cover Letter Magic." They advise against them.) My guess is that this would have to be done selectively and carefully. What may be seen as persistence by the job seeker may be interpreted by the potential employer as either not being able to take a hint or a desperate need to have the last word.
It's an okay book, particularly if your personal style is somewhat formal and "old school," but it's not worthy of its title.
Great info!.......2001-05-09
Lots and lots of cover letters, styles and information. Very helpful!
BRAVO>>>>Well done maestro!!!.......2000-10-06
Excellent book it showed me all I needed to write the perfect cover letter and it was incredibly easy to read and showed excellent examples of all different types of job seeking situations. I highly recommend this to anyone...from professionals to those seeking part-time employment, well done Mr. Yate!
You need this book!.......2000-09-08
I used this book when I was job searching during my senior year of college. I read it cover to cover, and followed the author's advice. I was highly successful in my job search, landing my dream job. I was even complimented several times on my "very creative" cover letter. You can't go wrong with this book!
Letters are all the same and don't offer much variety.......1999-01-20
I think the letters in this book are just average, and they focus on me, me, me. There is nothing that helps the writer craft a letter to meet the needs of the employer. A good title, but this books misses the mark.
