        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Huff Collection.......2007-01-02

I just received this collection of Huff short stories for Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed it. (From the date you can see it didn't take me long to plow though it!) All but one of the stories were new to me, so I'm sure that flavored my perception. If you haven't read any Tanya Huff before, this can be a good place to start, especially to experience the breadth of genres she covers. Her writing style is often light and witty, but not lacking in depth.

I didn't think there was a bad story in the bunch, though as someone else mentioned, the Dracula tale was probably the weakest. Still, having to think a bit before mentioning a possible dud indicates the strength of this collection. I highly recommend it to all Huff fans and potential Huff fans who haven't already read most of these stories in other anthologies.

4 out of 5 stars Nobody else writes like Tanya Huff.......2003-11-12

It is always a pleasure to get a new Huff, and this collection has got some great stories. Fans of the Blood series (and who isn't?) will be glad to know there is a new Henry Fitzroy story and a new Vicky Nelson story in this collection. If you like the Quarter series there's a Bannon and Vree story. There's an hilarious story about a very, very wicked Queen dictating her outrageous life story to a scribe. One story 'Oh Glorious Sight' I didn't much care for, it seemed to me to lay on the pathos a bit thick. My favourite story is 'Nights of the Round Table' in which a down-to-earth cleaning lady at Camelot dispenses advice to a succesion of dopey knights. One slight dissapointment was to discover that three of the stories I had already in a previously published volume ' Stealing Magic' but this is a minor quibble. Anything at all by Tanya Huff is always welcome.

4 out of 5 stars Love the work, but I've already read a lot of it!.......2003-10-21

I'm a big fan of Tanya Huff's work (we Rye High grads have to stick together... or something), so of course I bought this the second it came out. I was a little cheesed then, to discover that so many of the stories had appeared elsewhere. I wanted NEW stuff. Granted, the majority of the stories were new, but a significant amount were not. The Terazin stories, except one, all appeared in Stealing Magic, and I'd read Death Rites already as well (it was in Assassin Fantastic, and stars Vree and Bannon from the Quarters books). Okay, so I guess that's not that many to have been repeats, but I was really hoping for more Magdalene or Kelly Chase stories.
Anyway, the stories which are new are well written and interesting (although the Count Dracula one was a bit ho-hum - Henry Fitzroy is a much more interesting main character). Still, it's worth the price of admission. :)

                Description:
The MAGIC model was used to evaluate the relative sensitivity of several possible climate-induced effects on the recovery of soil and surface water from acidification. A common protocol was used at 14 intensively studied sites in Europe and eastern North America. The results show that several of the factors are of only minor importance (increase in pCO"2 in soil air and runoff, for example), several are important at only a few sites (seasalts at near-coastal sites, for example) and several are important at nearly all sites (increased concentrations of organic acids in soil solution and runoff, for example). In addition changes in forest growth and decomposition of soil organic matter are important at forested sites and sites at risk of nitrogen saturation. The trials suggest that in future modelling of recovery from acidification should take into account possible concurrent climate changes and focus specially on the climate-induced changes in organic acids and nitrogen retention.

Their sixth book, "Duct Tape Halloween" definitely sets the new standard for duct tape books! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

                  Book Description

Few inventions evoke such nostalgia, such deeply personal and vivid memories as radio—from Amos 'n' Andy and Edward R. Murrow to Wolfman Jack and Howard Stern. Listening In is the first in-depth history of how radio culture and content have kneaded and expanded the American psyche.

But Listening In is more than a history. It is also a reconsideration of what listening to radio has done to American culture in the twentieth century and how it has brought a completely new auditory dimension to our lives. Susan Douglas explores how listening has altered our day-to-day experiences and our own generational identities, cultivating different modes of listening in different eras; how radio has shaped our views of race, gender roles, ethnic barriers, family dynamics, leadership, and the generation gap. With her trademark wit, Douglas has created an eminently readable cultural history of radio.

"Douglas's wonderful book offers a sophisticated history of radio listening." —Journal of American History

5 out of 5 stars Superb social and cultural history of the medium.......2000-06-28

Radio has become such a background part of our lives, we forget just how astounding an impact it has had on our culture and psyche. Susan Douglas brings it all back to the foreground in her book "Listening In." This is not just a chronicle of the development of the media, this book takes us deep into the social impacts of radio, and how it changed how we react and interact with each other. Douglas has perfectly captured the feel and "tone" of different periods of radio listening, and explores a lot of the psychological aspects of how radio let us sample and explore different parts of our American cultue in a safe and nonthreatening way.

As a present-day radio fanatic, the book gave me hope: hope that the medium hasn't been corporatized into complete blandness. Radio will continue to evolve, just like our American culture.

Whether your're a radio technology type, an old time radio fan, or just a student of American history, you'll find something to love in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a history, not just a textbook.......2000-05-05

Please take note that Susan J. Douglas' (Times Books, 1999) is no mere history of radio. It was triggered by a request from the Sloan Foundation that was preparing a series of books on technology and American culture; and the emphasis is not on the details but on the general effect radio has on us from its beginnings. And take another note. This is too enjoyable a read to be considered a textbook.

My favorite chapter was the one called "Radio Comedy and Linguistic Slapstick." Here only a few comics are used as examples to support her several theses, one of which is the emasculation of the American male by the use of such high-pitched speakers as Jack Benny and Joe Penner. Of course there is lots of room for argument, but she does let the facts speak for themselves (pun intended).

The other chapters are "The Zen of Listening," "The Ethereal World," "Exploratory Listening in the 1920s," "Tuning In to Jazz" "The Invention of the Audience," "World War II and the Invention of Broadcast Journalism," "Playing Fields of the Mind," "The Kids Take Over: Transistors, DJs, and Rock 'n' Roll," "The FM Revolution," "Talk Talk," "Why Ham Radio Matters," and "Conclusion: Is Listening Dead?"

Which of us has not been affected in many of the ways Ms. Douglas points out in this book? Therefore, which of us can afford to miss being shown how radio has helped make us what we are? And I do hope she produces a similar book about television.

5 out of 5 stars A great read! "Radio is a sound salvation...".......2000-04-08

I've got Douglas' book today for her take on ham radio (I'm part of the Amateur Radio community) and I was very impressed with the rest of the book. Though I wrinkled my nose at the over-emphasis on the gender conflict in radio, Listening In reminded me of a time when people participate in a common culture instead of idly sitting by listening to the umpteenth Top 40 hit made by over-commercialized "plastic" bands.

The ham radio chapter was simply great and I give Dr. Douglas her due for mentioning the American Radio Relay League as the national association for hams. From this chapter, I can see why hams have a nurturing touch in their approach to life! The section on radio comedy is well done (the comedy bits are good for a chuckle or two). I recommend it to those who have a deep affinity for radio and communications.

                      Book Description

Though it was never designed to accommodate musical performance, the Crystal Palace at Sydenham, opened in 1854, quickly established itself as the most important single location for public music-making in the United Kingdom. For almost fifty years the orchestral concerts and choral festivals provided weekly performances which set new standards and introduced new repertory unparalleled anywhere in its time. Since its spectacular destruction by fire in 1936, the once familiar patterns of music-making have been long forgotten. This is the first book to reconstruct the musical history of the Crystal Palace. In so doing, Michael Musgrave also offers a unique survey of British musical life stretching from the Victorian period to the eve of the Second World War. Fully illustrated and with valuable catalogues of performers and repertoire, the book will be of interest to students and scholars of nineteenth- and twentieth-century music, British social history, and architecture, as well as to the general music enthusiast.

                            Book Description

In this unique study of the dramatic form, Oscar Lee Brownstein presents a personal analysis of the way in which experience is created by drama. A variety of plays are discussed and examined as perceptual objects, structures whose designs are entirely determined by the fact that they are meant to be perceived. Brownstein focuses on the distinct aspects of the dramatic art form and on its special powers to orchestrate the imagination and produce a personal encounter in the lives of spectators. In so doing, he provides a practical critical theory of drama that is sophisticated yet accessible. Approaching drama from a phenomenological perspective, Brownstein strives not to interpret the plays themselves, but rather his own perceptions and the sources that prompted them. Covering the wide history of Western drama from the Greeks to the present day, he treats in detail a small number of works that are readily familiar. He offers an extensive theoretical survey of the "perception shift" that infuses even the smallest element of a play, as well as those forces that are expressed through major dramatic strategies. Also addressed are the ways in which a single narrative sequence may serve all dramatic strategies. Some of the plays discussed include King Lear, A Streetcar Named Desire, Betrayal, Oedipus Rex, and Waiting for Godot. This work will be an important resource for students of dramaturgy, criticism, and dramatic theory, as well as for writers, directors, and actors involved in the dramatic arts.

This is a teacher's aid for teaching a class on arts appreciation. It is full of blank pages (meant to be xeroxed, I guess) that students are required to fill out or attach to projects. There is also a syllabus, all kinds of acedemic rules about what the students are allowed to do (and not do!) for "art" projects, and lesson plans. If I was teaching the class, I wouldn't use this book because it's whole approach is so unfriendly and tied to the acedemic "grading" thing. I was really shocked and surprised to read that it is for a University level class!! The approach is so restrictive and dictatorial, I thought it was for Junior High kids

                                        Book Description

This great "how to" book covers the various mechanics of natural gas trading, including the physical (cash) market for natural gas production, transportation, distribution, and consumption. The heart of the text is the definition and demonstration of financial trading tools and techniques. It closes with discussion of more complex structures of trading and the author's philosophy on how a risk management department should function within a natural gas trading company.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Learn Natural Gas Trading.......2006-08-04

Even if you do not have a solid understanding of derivatives, this book is really good explaining step by step how the different derivatives are used for hedging natural gas; regardless if you are the producer, trader, or end user. The author gives many examples of how each derivative works. I highly recommend this book if you are starting out as a junior trader, risk products trader, supply planner, etc.

5 out of 5 stars educational sources for practical trading purposes.......2005-07-16

I have not seen any book that describes its domain with such generous detail and is geared for real life trading. The contents may not be enough for those who trade only financial energy instruments, but it is indeed a good course material for the market makers, and hedgers, namely end users and producers. I highly recommend this book to those who are involved in natural gas industry.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Natural Gas Traders.......1998-12-05

Was very pleased with the material contained in this book. Although I am a beginner in the natural gas trading field, I found Sturm's book both easy to understand yet challenging in its scope. A great deal of emphasis is placed upon various hedging techniques and many helpful diagrams are included to portray the trading flow. Overall a very unique and insightful book for beginners and for those with years of experience in trading natural gas.
