Book Description
"If our procedure is to work steadily in the direction of drawing as fine art, rather than (as we so often find) beginning from examples of such art, where shall we begin? One attractive possibility is to begin at the beginningnot the beginning in prehistory, which is already wonderful art, but with our personal beginnings as children. From there it will be the ambitious project of this book to investigate `the course of drawing,' from the first marks children make to the greatest graphic arts of different cultures."from the Introduction
Patrick Maynard surveys the rich and varied practices of drawing, from the earliest markings on cave walls to the complex technical schematics that make the modern world possible, from cartoons and the first efforts of preschoolers to the works of skilled draftspeople and the greatest artists, East and West.
Despite, or perhaps because of, its ubiquity, drawing as such has provoked remarkably little philosophical reflection. Nonphilosophical writing on the topic tends to be divided between specialties such as art history and mechanics. In this engagingly written and well-illustrated book, Maynard reveals the interconnections and developments that unite this fundamental, autonomous, human activity in all its diversity. Informed by close discussion of work in art history, art criticism, cognitive and developmental psychology, and aesthetics, Drawing Distinctions presents a theoretically sophisticated yet approachable argument that will improve comprehension and appreciation of drawing in its many forms, uses, and meanings.

Book Description
Tracing the history of costume jewelry from ancient times to the present day, and explaining how changing fashions, social developments, and the discovery of new materials have influenced and inspired designers, DK Collector's Guide: Costume Jewelry is exciting, comprehensive, and easy to use. Written by world-renowned antiques expert Judith Miller, the book offers more than 1,500 collectible pieces in catalog-style, including special sections on 25 major designers such as Joseff of Hollywood, Tiffany & Co, Chanel, Schiaparelli and Dior, and offers priceless tips on what to look for when buying costume jewelry.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Photography, High-End Emphasis.......2007-01-11
This book is a good one to have in your costume jewelry library. It begins with interesting background on costume jewelry through the ages followed by twenty in-depth designer profiles with example pieces. An interesting feature of these first designer profiles is the "Good, Better, Best" designations for examples of the same type of piece, such as necklaces or pins. The third section is entitled the "A-Z of Designers and Makers," which includes less in-depth information on the company or designer with photos of pieces. Interspersed among the A-Z designers are sections entitled "Hot Collecting Field," which deal with topics such as Christmas tree pins, Scottish agate jewelry, Bakelite, Coro duettes, etc. It took me a while to figure out this interruption in the A-Z organization. One surprise in the A-Z designers is that DeLizza & Elster (Juliana) is not included. The book concludes with a "Gallery of Unsigned Pieces" with some rather hodgepodge categories, such as "Miscellaneous Pins." The index is good but alphabetized by designer last name in contrast to other sections of the book which may be alphabetized by designer first name. The jewelry included in this book definitely leans toward the high end. In addition, values seem to me to be inflated in relation to eBay averages. The photography is beautiful. I would recommend buying a used copy for your costume jewelry library.
Great Book, Lots of Information!.......2006-09-08
I really like this book because the is alot if information on alot of different makers. The pictures are clear. There are alot of designers I have never heard of so this is great for me. I'm far from an expert and not a beginner so this book is good for me!
Buy it!
Judith Miller Costume Jewelry.......2005-07-24
Very good basic review of higher end costume jewelry with great photos, bold layout.
Great Book for Beginners and Experienced Collectors.......2005-05-14
This book was one of my first books on costume jewelry, and it is so easy to learn from. I know, because I have an online vintage jewelry site, "Enchantment Vintage Costume Jewelry" and I still reference this book frequently.
The best thing about this book, besides the clear & colorful eye candy, is that it gives a rundown on different jewelry eras--from Victorian through 1980s glitz! There are aslo sections on a great many of the most collectible designers and the characteristics of their jewelry. It also includes a section on unsigned jewelry, which is good because most costume jewelry was unsigned.
One of the most helpful aspects is that the jewelry is dated, so that the reader can learn to start assigning dates to the different styles of jewelry. You can't go wrong with this one.
I also recommend "How to Be a Jewelry Detective," by Jeanenne Bell.
Good quick reference.......2004-10-22
A beautiful book that covers an exaustive list of designers/makers. It's great for quick reference of designer bios and their notable pieces, or simply for enjoying the high quality photos. However, I find this book inadequate in terms of in-depth information on period/designer indentification based on material, craftmanship or markings. As a relatively new collector of vintage jewelry, I find it a good place to start, but it's by no means an all-in-one type of reference book.

Customer Reviews:
Cc Costume Jewelry 2edby Harrice S. Miller (Author).......2003-06-06
This book was perhaps a little more helpful than another by this author pertaining to costume jewelry but it still leaves much to be desired for the beginner trying to learn about prices and pieces of costume jewelry. I do not recommend.
A great info reference, but not my favorite.......2002-03-14
This book has wonderful information about different styles of costume jewelry, history, and manufacturing. For me however, I found that there were not enough photos, and the photos that were included, because they are black and white and because of the type of paper the book is printed on, are just not clear enough.
One of the reasons I bought a number of books on this subject was to help me recognize the pieces when I saw them. Because the photos are not clear it was harder for me to put my new found knowledge to practice in the real world, because I wasn't quite sure if what I was seeing was the same as what was in the book.
A Must Have for Serious Collectors.......2001-02-18
I sell vintage costume jewelry for a living so, as you can probably imagine, I have a lot of books on the subject. This is definitely one of the best. It's filled with fantastic background information on the making of costume jewelry, the top name designers and popular styles. The photos (b&w and color) provide good illustrations and are often of rarer, less-frequently-seen styles. I also like the fact that it's a smaller paperback book (as opposed to a large format hardcover). It's easier to take to antique/jewelry shows and thumb through when necesary.
Worth buying!.......1999-12-03
Quite a good reference book on costume jewelry! It is divided into chapters by eras, i.e. - 20's, 30's, etc.... Not only does this book show jewelry and give prices, but it also gives info on what was going on in the jewelry industry during that era, which gives you help in identifying the age of pieces not found in the book. The pictures are mostly in B&W, but are very crisp and well photographed. The few color pictures are stunning. One note of caution to newbies - many of the book values in here are quite high - do not expect to get anywhere near that amount when you sell a piece, unless you sell in a very large city, and even then expect to "discount" a little. In all, however, this book has a ton of info and resources (even a dealer's directory!), and is well worth buying.

Miller's: Furniture: Antiques Checklist (Miller's Antiques Checklist)
ASIN: 1857328167 |
Book Description
This ever-popular series has been completely updated with new prices to reflect recent market trends. The fully illustrated pocket guides make the world of antiques accessible to a wider audience than ever before.
Each book provides a simple question-and-answer checklist for a broad range of representative items, telling readers what to look for and how to distinguish between the genuine article and a fake, an original, and a copy.
Customer Reviews:
I learned a lot from this book.......2006-02-01
It covers antique collectible jewellery from 18th century to modern, gives plenty of details on styles, materials used, hallmarking and things to look for when buying. For each category (i.e. Art Noveau brooches) it gives one representative item in picture and description + estimation of value, and several similar ones (different craftmanship or designer than the main example) but without the value (which bugged me a little). If it also offered a comprehensive table with all/most info arranged in one place, for quick reference, it would be perfect.

Book Description
The greatest adventure epic since Beowulf continues in this perennial, full-color series. Hal Foster's Prince Valiant, with its thrilling continuities of a noble knight in the days of King Arthur, began in newspapers in 1937 and continues to this day. There had been continuity strips, and even strong elements of adventure, before Hal Foster started drawing comic strips, but approximately 35 years after the birth of the artform, it was Foster who introduced illustrative techniquesand the sensibilities and standards of such illustrative greats as Howard Pyleto the comics page. Realistic depictions and sophisticated compositions had been curiously absent before him. He is still considered, twenty years after his death, to be comics' supreme classicist.
Fantagraphics' deluxe, full-color library-quality editions of Prince Valiant were initially intended to end with 2000's Vol. 40, the final volume in which Foster was the chief architect of the strip's visual look. Due to overwhelming public demand, however, we are continuing the series, reprinting strips written and roughed-out by Foster and finished by Foster's prodigious assistant, John Cullen Murphy. Murphy, who had been quietly assisting Foster for several years, actively took over the bulk of the drawing chores in 1971 and immediately developed a fan following himself (although, for the most part, your average newspaper reader couldn't discern a difference between Foster and Cullen Murphy's styles).
Each volume of
Prince Valiant features close to a year's worth of full-page Sunday strips, in an oversized format showcasing the strip's spectacular artwork.

This volume contains the complete EATING screenplay along with a selection of stills from the film. These are highlighted by personal notes written by Henry Jaglom and most of the actresses in the film on the subject of food and eating. Touching and funny, sometimes outrageous, always illuminating, they lend an intimate, yet universal touch to this work. EATING deals with the complex issue of women and their unique and intense relationship to food...a tapestry of 38 specific women through whom we come to know and understand much more about this very complex phenomenon. As one of the women in the film says: I'm still trying to find a man who can excite me as much as a baked potato.

Not surprising at all..........2006-09-29
Naturally, everybody's copy of this REPRINT has the front page signed by Richard O'Brien "to Chris with love Richard" and is similarly #27 of the original Limited Edition of 2000. That's the copy that Christopher Malcolm (original London stage Brad) received from Richard O'Brien, and since they apparently couldn't find the original scrapbook they used his copy as the basis for the reprint.
Scrapbook.......2005-10-10
Okay, this Scrapbook is just that. A Scrapbook. It features great rare photos from the early days of the stage show and has tons of clippings, artwork, album covers, interviews, and press releases. Also covers a bit on the movie. If your a collector or want to see inside the world of Rocky Horror then this book will be great for you. WOuld make a nice coffee table book.

Great Songs for Sopranos!.......2001-05-05
This book contains both well- known and unknown gems from the Musical Theatre world. I must say, the more unknown songs have been very useful to me! They include Christmas Lullaby (Songs for a New World), Whistle Down the Wind (Whistle Down the Wind), and Unexpected Song (Song and Dance). But there are many more! If you are looking for better known material, the book has that too!: Once Upon a Dream (Jekyll and Hyde), In His Eyes (Jekyll and Hyde), In My Own Little Corner (Cinderella), Just You Wait (My Fair Lady), My Favorite Things (Sound of Music), Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again (Phantom of the Opera), Think of Me (Phantom of the Opera), and Wouldn't It Be Loverly? (My Fair Lady). The reason that I didn't give this book 5 stars is that I felt it left out many great pieces. I'm aware that not every book can have everything, but there were anywhere from 5 to 10 songs that I found totally useless. However, overall, this book is a great addition to anyone's sheet music collection!
