Absolutely a must!.......2002-01-14
If you are a fan of the Elfquest comics, this is really a must to own. Lots of facts are to be revealed about Bearclaw's leadership and about the elf he was and if you are fan of Strongbow, you really must read it...
Why?
Because in this book you will find all kinds of emotion, from happiness to desperation and grief. And a dark chapter in the history of the Wolfriders is enlightened. What kind of chief, lifemate and father was Bearclaw?
And...
Did you ever wanted to know more about Strongbow, the silent archer? And about his deceased child? Then this issue is worth to read. His dislike of changes, it doesn't come out of nowhere, does it? Read and you'll know.
Not only this issue, but all the issues drawn by Wendy Pini are worth to read... you won't regret it......
A very complex look at a complex character........2001-12-27
Bearclaw isn't an easy character to love, and he definitely isn't the stereotypical nurturing, loving, peacable Wolfrider. The book details how he came to make war on the humans and firmly sets responsibility for that war just as squarely on his shoulders as on the humans'. Prejudice, racial hatred, violent childrearing, and Dumb Boy Mistakes abound here. After reading this book, I came to understand that the Pini's elves are in their way just as human as we are, and just as capable of unpleasant behavior and beliefs.
In "Hidden Years", when Ember asks her father, Cutter (whose hand is raised to slap her), "Who taught you to do that, anyway?", the question is all the more poignant, and Cutter's childrearing beliefs in the face of Bearclaw's treatment become all the more remarkable.
I was quite jarred when, midway through the book, another artist took over -- this new artist had a very different style from Wendy and honestly I did not like that style much -- but eventually Wendy took over again.
I'd consider this a must-have in an Elfquest reader's library. It very efficiently balances the overly-good image the elves have.
Wolfrider.......2001-01-07
I loved this book. Not only is the art work beautiful, the story is one I've been wanting to see for quite some time. If you don't have this book in your collection already, I recommend adding it.
Interesting.......2000-02-19
I think that this book is very interesting becasue it gives a little insight into bearclaw's world as a leader, but the illustrations get a little shotty towards the end. But all in all it is a great book. I recomend reading this book, so one would be able to learn the history of the wolfRider tribe.
happy in San Antonio.......2000-01-31
the book wolfrider is one of wendi's best i think. beutiful story, art, and over all everything
Book Description
In Drinks Well with Others and Mixed Nuts MikWright pokes fun at two favorite topics: cocktails and dysfunction. Readers will laugh as they page through these funny little gift books and may even feel compelled to lift a highball to themselves, family, and nutty friends. All in good fun, Drinks Well with Others conjures up such images as Grandma getting tipsy at the sight of communion wine, Aunt Violet lollygagging around the eggnog bowl at Christmas, and Mom using four-letter words after two glasses of vino. The spicy one-liners mix delightfully with black-and-white photography that looks like it fell right out of every baby boomer's hand-me-down family album. There's Great-grandmother with that trademark iron grip on her cocktail glass and Uncle Bill showing fine form as an ice fisherman-cum-beer drinker.

The Greatest Disappointment of All.......2003-04-30
Oh please, read the book, wasn't thrilled. It had it's amusing points, but I think that Mr. Ammons has a vendetta against Whitney and this is the payback. I am no where near a Whitney houston fan and I read this with the intention of having more fuel to add to my fire- but this was no kerosene. I often got the impression that though this was supposed to be a "tell-all", Mr. Ammons was reluctant to diverge a lot of information he could have told. Maybe he's saving that for a follow-up, who knows? who cares? This book is best left in the store.
What a joke?.......2001-09-04
Sounds to me like Kevin wrote this book to make a quick buck and to get back at Regina. And Kevin was just as scanless as Regina he had a wife and children, however, was having an affair with Regina because of the promise of a record deal. Most of the things that were written about Whitney was not original. I could have wrote this book myself based on gathering information from previous articles written on Whitney. He should have wrote a novel about him and Regina and their scanless ways. I am glad that I waited for this book to come out in paper.
I enjoyed this book.......2001-01-28
I enjoyed this book on Whitney Houston and I know personally that a lot of what Kevin Ammons says in the book is true. I took away one star, as the latter part of the book sounds like research and not first hand knowledge.
Exploitation of a star for a quick buck.......1999-11-30
I wanted to read a biography on one of my favorite singers that will give a realistic, yet, smart look on her life. Good Girl, Bad Girl is nothing but a piece of trash written by a man who either wanted to get back on Whitney for something, or was looking to make a quick buck at her expense. I am aware that celebrity lives behind the spotlight might not be wonderful---but I still feel that they are entitled to their privacy. I am so glad I didn't buy this book, I returned it to my friend the very next day, I didn't bother to finish it.
A well written book on Whitney Houston ........1999-03-22
Good girl, Bad girl was a well written book on Whitney Houston, but unfortunately the book was unauthorized and none of us know if any of the information was true. I will say that many of his comments were true, I know because I am a true Whitney Houston fan. Getting to the contents of the rest of the book I liked it,Ammons words seemed truely sincere he seemed to know information only some one close to Whitney would know. I gave this book 2 stars, because it is an unauthorized, so for that I took I took away some stars.

Be very, very careful if you use this book as history.......2007-01-13
Normally, I hesitate to judge an RPG supplement on it's historical merit. They aren't meant to be history books, after all; a fact omitted or misread can be understood because the goal is to give Wraith players an interesting background setting, not to educate us on the whos, whats, and wheres of the past.
However, this book starts out by emphasizing that it's contents should be taken as truth, at least in the areas where it discusses 'real' history. This causes problems because the authors clearly have historical blinders to anything BUT the Holocaust. What could be a powerful move towards discussing one of the great tragedies of history through the medium of roleplaying becomes almost a work of holocaust denial through omission.
This is most horribly demonstrated in it's section on Babi Yar, outside of Kiev in the Ukraine. The author seems flatly ignorant of Ukrainian history outside of this one event. Never once is the Holodomor, the Ukrainian Famine which wiped out six million peasant farmers in 1933, so much as even implied; not in the background history, not in the character histories, not anywhere. The collectivization campaign, 'dekulakization', and the purges are similarly absent. The highlights of this section include a Wraith whose father 'fought for freedom with Lenin in Moscow', inspiring him to join the Red Army (the idea of Lenin 'fighting for freedom' would likely have come as a shock to victims of the Red Terror, and the authors make no attempt to show that this decision of the character's might be an unfounded point of view), and a Jewish character who is initially spared by a German because she has a "good Ukrainian name" after marrying a Ukrainian gentile (demonstrating complete ignorance of Nazi policy towards the 'sub-human' population of the area who happened to be Slavs rather than Jews).
Similar background setting notes make it perfectly clear that the authors have no idea that, even as millions were dying in German concentration camps, millions more were dying elsewhere at the hands of the Soviets or Japanese. The 'Dark Kingdom of Wire' is founded by victims of the Shoah; nothing is even hinted at as to how the wraiths of the Gulags were dealt with by Stygia.
In short, if you use this book, use it purely as an RPG supplement, not as history. There are bigger and more thorough books than this discussing what happened in occupied Europe under the Third Reich, books which do honor to the victims of Nazi genocide without pretending as if no other genocides have occured.
The Dark Kingdom of Wire.......2001-11-26
Understand, I don't play Wraith. I read it for the background, which I find extremely interesting. So I can't help you on the subject of rules, game balance, whatever. But I can tell you something of the quality of this book.
Perhaps the most suprising thing, right off the bat, is that this is a soft cover. Generally, one does not expect deeply disturbing images to leap from the pages of an oversized floppy book. Consistantly, White Wolf has challenged that assumption, and this is probably the best example everywhere.
When you open it, you will find a two-page black and white image. This image is one of the most haunting pictures I have ever seen. Countless thousands of men, women, and children stand on the shores of a river. Garbed in prisoner stripes, heads shaven, they wait, some standing in edge of the water, some with their arms raised in supplication. There are so very many of them.
There is a single small boat, with a single ferryman, ferrying them one by one into the afterlife. The magnitude, the idea that death is never wholesale, that it is always, always a personal matter, is message enough to be worth the purchase price.
This book is never trivial. It is never "fun". It draws immensely from history, and makes it very clear what is fiction, and what is drawn from a history far darker than that found in any fiction.
The background is superb, the infomation interesting and vivid. Places described are disturbing and realistic. Characters make sense, plots seem feasable.
For many who read this, this will likely be a first look into the subjects described. It is much more intense than they may be used to. It is recommended for "Mature Audiences", and while I think teenagers should read this exact sort of thing, I think care should be taken that they be aware of the seriousness of such a subject.
This is the sort of book that will remain on my shelf, long after the game system fades into obscurity.
Castle Wolfenstein, this is not.

NEVER AGAIN.......2000-06-30
I am only 3/4ths of the way through this book, but I can honestly say that it has changed my views on the Burning and has possibly changed me as a person. I've read the history books, but they're nowhere near as detailed as "Charnel Houses". A few excerps shook me.
Even if you aren't a fan of Wraith: The Oblivion, or ANY role-playing game for that matter, you can still get the messege that this book is trying to get across: Never again.
One of the most necessary RPG supplements in history........1998-09-30
Understand, this is not an expansion for you and your friends to sit down and play after watching Monty Python. In the darkest game of the World of Darkness, Shoah is the darkest corner. The opening artwork is a brutal example of what you'll find in the rest of the book: if it's too much for you, then you may not want to get any deeper.
Shoah: Charnel Houses of Europe opens with a brief bit of history (prompting some to even go so far as to use this section as a textbook) before detailing the Dark Kingdom of Wire: the Holocaust's wraithly inheritors. The book presents the falsified Jewish society that detoured a Red Cross investigation (which, in turn, kept the world blind just long enough for a few million more deaths), the Polish ghettos of Warsaw and their almost-victorious hero, and a Russian camp. These are, obviously, in descending order of darkness, but each are richly detailed and usable for any who think their troupe can handle the content.
Auschwitz is last. It is detailed. It is thorough. If you decide your troupe should go to Auschwitz, it contains enough information to horrify the players: that this is the worst atrocity in human history.
The book is dark, troubling, nightmarish, and easily worth three thousand times the cover price for any roleplayer who knows what it contains. It is very simply the best RPG book I've ever read.

Customer Reviews:
menu pricing.......2000-11-27
The book has a really good discussion on menu pricing that I was looking for. A shorter section than in than Miller's other book, but easier to get the important information. Worth the price of the book.
Easy to understand.......2000-10-15
Alot easier to understand than most books on the same topic. Made it fun to read.
Well written.......2000-05-04
This book was recommended by the National Restaurant Association for their cost control course. I thought it was easy to read and clear. I would recommend it. The author, Jack Miller, was from St. Louis, where he was Head of the restaurant program at St. Louis Community College...
waste of time and money.......1998-04-07
Interestingly enough, in a course which claims to instruct students in making wise spending choices and detailed accounts of managing expenses, I found that this required text refuted such theories. I was forced to buy this book, and feel that the content and the overall ineptitude of the quality, only re-inforced a few of the book's points, which were not so informative. It reminded me that I wasted so much time and money on something that served no useful purpose. I guess it would be like ordering a multitude of food products that would never have any use in a specific operation. For this reason, it taught very valuable lessons. I believe, however, they could have been learned by spending this money on something more useful. Very poorly written, and often inaccurate. Not at all helpful in trying to apply this information in a real life setting. Perhaps, actually visiting a restaurant or working in one might provide the authors a little more insight.
