Nice book, but the selection of works is limited.......2002-08-31
This book is a catalogue for an exhibition that was held at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The reproductions do not represent the full work of Millet but rather the selection of works that was presented in that exhibition. There are many reproductions of drawings, pastels and watercolors, and only a few paintings. Many of the drawings are preparations for larger scale paintings. I bought the book after a visit to the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and was disappointed not to find many paintings that I remember from that visit - not even "The Angelus", which is probably Millet's most famous work. Still there is a large number of beautiful drawings and paintings, and the introductory text is interesting. I wish the reproductions would be larger - there are only about ten full page reproductions throughout the book.
Very pleased with the quality of the book.......1999-05-24
This is the first quality pyblication I have found on Millet. While I was looking for more of a coffe table type book of his paintings, I was slighlty disappointed that many of his works were not included but the history of his life more than makes up for it.

Absolutely Stunning.......2006-07-26
Wish I could give this more than five stars! This is a fantastic book for anyone who needs to know more about what was worn by women during this time period and how it looked. Illos are on lovely bright paper, no words to mar the pictures. This book is 376 pages full of highly-detailed line drawings, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Beautiful illustrations, but no text.......2006-08-13
There's good news and bad news about this book.
The good news is, this book has literally hundreds, possibly even thousands, of gorgeous period illustrations of women's (mostly), men's and children's fashions in one of the most elegant and sumptuous periods in costume history - the late Victorian/Edwardian/post-Edwardian-WWI period collectively known as the "Belle Epoque". Many of these pictures are in color and many are full-page, and present every possible style of dress that you could possibly ask for.
The bad news is, this cornucopia of lovely pictures is not accompanied by a single word of text except for the introduction (in four languages), nor, as a previous reviewer has noted, are the pictures in chronological order. I don't personally consider it a total showstopper - I own this book, after all - but the lack of text is a major handicap for people who are looking for in-depth illustration.
If you're a completist and if you appreciate beautiful artwork, do get this book. But if information is what you need, you would be better advised to get the fantastic Dover Publications book _English Women's Clothing of the Nineteenth Century_.
Utterly useless.......2004-01-03
A "fashion history" compendium with no dates, no sources, no captions, and no index? The plates are not even in chronological order; I can't understand how anyone could publish this and think it might be useful. This is a complete waste of time and money for the serious costumer or student of fashion history. Moreover, I can easily identify almost all of the plates from various Dover publications; nothing rare or hard-to-find here.
If you want a collection of Victorian graphics, look at Carol Belanger Grafton's books - higher quality images and easier to use. If you are interested in learning about nineteenth-century fashion, look for Dover publications, Norah Waugh, Janet Arnold, compilations of period photographs ... anywhere but this book.
Great Victorian Costume Graphics.......2003-06-27
Anyone who's looking for clear crisp graphics of costume, clothing, and assorted accessory details really needs to own this fantastic collection. Highly recommend it for theatre costumers working on Shaw and Checkov...and anyone else needing either fashion or costume detail.

Atrelegis: The Conclusion.......2003-10-08
This is a great book that concludes the first volume of Pat Lee's Warlands.
The book starts off with a battle between two dragons (what more could you ask for?!).
In this book the elusive Darklyte armor is finally found.
The War of the Races is again at hand. The Humans are joined by the forces of the Dwarves and Elves in battle with the Vampire horde of Malagen.
As the battle of the races goes on above, Elessa, G'dar, Delezar, and Zeph try to possess the Darklyte armor and are engaged in a battle with an army of vampires led by Prince Aalok and Vardemis as the dragons destroy the cave.
The servants of Malagen finally show off their capabilities in this book (which is one of the great things in this book).
To avoid spoiling the story and giving out too much detail, I would have to leave this review as it is.
Again this is the second book to the Warlands series entitled "Atrelegis", this book comes before "Three Stories" which also comes before the second volume entitled "Age of Ice".
Hope this helps fill in Amazon's lack of information. Happy reading.
which warlands book is this? volume 2 atrelegis?.......2003-08-08
the one star is dedecated to amazon for lack of info concerning this product.
I have bought both vol 1 & 3, but I out miss vol 2, Atrelegis.
so my question is, wether or not this book is vol 2.
if anybody else have bought this product, please correct the title on the listing!
(ps. the other books deserves four stars)

A Great Comedy Motivational Book !!.......1997-07-18
A great book from a great comedy writer!
Mr. Perret's book is a great motivational book for one thinking of entering the field of stand-up. Here's a book from a comedy writer who carved out the wittisisms for the greats and a behind the scenes look on what it takes to get started.
This book should be in every stand-up or beginning comedian's library (or comedy writer).

Irving Thalberg is one of Hollywood's success stories - and tragedies. A mogul at MGM by the age of 25, he produced classic films like Ben Hur, Mutiny on the Bounty, Grand Hotel, and hundreds more. Thalberg brought taste, daring, and vast profits to MGM before his tragic death at the age of 37. This is an authoritative look at the "boy wonder" and his achievements.
Customer Reviews:
The Last Tycoon.......2006-07-16
"Why is it that the great ones always go first, while the schmiels live to be 100?" - Groucho Marx said when hearing of Thalberg's early death.
Irving Thalberg was born with a weak heart. Doctors said he wouldn't live past the age of 30. He lived 7 years beyond that, and his extreme sense of urgency made him accomplish quality work with more regularity than any producer in film history.
Able to read letters, and hold meetings in his office simultaneously, with no loss of comprehension - and often mistaken as an office assistant by newcomers, Thalberg earned the nickname "The Boy Wonder."
Bob Thomas' biography (originally published in the 1960's) remains the 'definitive' biography on Thalberg. This dubious honor comes from the fact that there aren't many publications available about Thalberg to begin with. Thomas has the market cornered.
Thalberg's motto: "Credit you give yourself is not worth having" illustrates his modesty. He rarely wrote letters, made sure to stay away from the press, and never placed his name in the credits of his own pictures. This lack of material makes biography-writing difficult.
The most insightful passages of this book are from Thalberg himself: a section of a speech he gave to a group of UCLA college students on "The Art of the Photoplay", and an article titled "Why Films Cost So Much" printed in a trade magazine.
Four-fifths of the book is good. Filled with many anecdotes about the making of Ben-Hur (silent version), Grand Hotel, Freaks, Mutiny On The Bounty, etc. And also the 'making' of certain stars: Greta Garbo, Norma Shearer, and Clark Gable to name a few. Studios held all the power in those days, concerning publicity. And they (i.e. Thalberg, and Mayer) decided how to market their actors and actresses. More than once, stories are told about Thalberg deftly handling newspapermen when they smelled a possible scandal in the air.
One complaint: The book's editor should've pulled a Thalberg, and cut Part 1 of this book, dumping it on the floor faster than footage from an unwieldy von Stroheim project. Three chapters are spent on F. Scott Fitzgerald writing his final (and incomplete) novel, "The Last Tycoon." Granted, "The Last Tycoon" is an excellent book, and the character Monroe Stahr is largely based on Irving Thalberg...but spending 3 chapters on this? Cut it! It rambles on pointlessly like some college thesis on the demise of Fitzgerald and the loss of the American Dream.
Good book overall. But, then again, with so little material 'out there' on Thalberg, ANY information on The Boy Wonder is welcome.
Also recommend:
*The film MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES (1957) - biopic on Lon Chaney (James Cagney). Features a few scenes between Chaney and Thalberg (played by Robert J. Evans - selected personally by Thalberg's widow to play the part.)
*The book MEMO FROM DAVID O. SELZNICK, a first-person account of producing films during Hollywood's 'Golden Age.'
In Old Hollywood.......2005-02-21
I enjoyed reading this biography about one of my favorite movie people, Irving Thalberg, the boy genius of MGM. I was able to learn about his relationship with Lois B. Mayer, how he worked his way up in the business and how he shaped the careers of many Hollywood stars.
Bob Thomas gives us an insight into the Hollywood of the 20s and 30s. The pictures of Irving Thalberg with, among others, Norma Shearer, are really good. I liked being able to take a look at Thalberg's office, since I had often wondered what that looked like.
Most people thought very well of Irving Thalberg and were sad when he died young, at the age of 37. This, I think, is a rarity in Hollywood. The man deserved a longer life.

Thalberg-Last of the Tycoons.......2005-02-21
This was the kind of book you want to memorize if you are interested in the early beginnings of MGM.
Thalberg started out as a secretary to Carl Lemelle, and his brillance and observance of the film industry was noticed by Lemelle and Iriving was placed at Universal as Producer. He took a company with low revenues, and with poor management and made it into a thriving movie making business.
He left there to join forces with Mayer, and they made the deals that subsequently formed MGM.
You will learn much about other producers- and how Irving operated and made MGM a multi-million dollar business.
The journalism is very accurate. I could hardly put this book down for one who wants to digest the early makings of MGM. I also found the spot online where THalberg had his "Ocean Front" home in Santa Monica. Amazing what the internet can tell you.
I would recommend this book. Nice B & W pics too.

Book Description
What made Metro-goldwyn-Mayer was not its possessions, but its people, men and women under contract to put together and appear in the motion pictures it produced. Rich with anecdotes and never before told stories, this book is an eyewitness look at the way Hollywood was born. Samuel Marx knew all the people he writes about. He digs under the facade, telling the real story, the grit, dirt, and emotion behind the glitz, smiles and songs of the MGM studios.

Described by Aaron Copland as "among the finest creations of the modern repertoire," Berg's Violin Concerto has become a twentieth-century classic. In this authoritative and highly readable guide the reader is introduced not only to the concerto itself but to all that surrounded and determined its composition. The book puts the concerto in its cultural context, provides biographical information on the composers and others associated with the work, gives an accessible guide to the music, and provides scholarly discussion for specialists. The author's ability to combine musical anecdote with scholarly analysis makes this guide compelling reading for amateur and specialist alike.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe the single most useful Cambridge Music Handbook yet.......2005-12-12
Anthony Poole's study of Berg's violin concerto is one of the standouts of the Cambridge Music Handbooks series, exploring every facet of the work and giving a vivid picture of the society in which the book was written. If you love Berg's quirky yet moving masterpiece, or are trying to understand what all the fuss is about, this is a vital book to have. Note, however, that one must also have a copy of the score to fully use this handbook, as Poole makes frequent reference to rehearsal numbers.
Poole's work consists of four parts. In the first, Poole presents the music scene of the 1930s, paying especial attention to the style of allusion used by Stravinsky et al. and the conservatism of Rachmaninoff and even some of Schoenberg's American works. Berg, writes Poole, elegantly balanced between the competing musical philosophies of the time. The second part of the book takes up this theme, showing the breakthroughs Berg made in the works written up to the violin concerto, such as the Three Orchestral Pieces, the "Lyric Suite", and parts of "Lulu".
Yet it is the latter half of the book that will be most fascinating to many readers, getting as they do to the violin concerto itself. In the third part, Poole tracks the composition of the work, explaining how it was partially inspired by the death of Manon Gropius. A big bombshell is that parts of the work are inspired by a bawdy Carinthian folk song; a work often seen as of angelic purity (dedicated as it is "to the memory of an angel") has a rather risque subtext. Poole also mentions Berg's fathering of an illegitimate child by a servant girl in his boyhood home, memories of which, which he says, leave meaningful traces in the work.
The next two chapters form the musicological analysis of the work. Some of it is accessible to everyone. For example, he goes step by step through the various portions of the concerto. The two movements break nicely into two sections each, and each section has several distinct parts of its own. Poole helps the reader follow these developments in a way that greatly enhances appreciation of the concerto. The discussion of tonality in the work, however, supposes some knowledge of music theory, and makes heavy use of Schenkerian/Neo-Schenkerian theory. Poole reveals the work to be much more traditional than is often let on--which, incidentally, vindicates Boulez, who over fifty years ago famously dismissed Berg as too bound by early notions of form and tonality. The final chapter of the work talks about the critical reception that the concerto met.
An admirable handbook, and much more successful than most entries in the CMH series.
An outstanding guide to a complex piece of music........1999-05-18
This book covers almost everything you could want to know about this concerto, which is difficult but full of powerful emotion. It explains the commission, the performance history, the program, and the tonality. I wish the book had more short musical examples in the program section, but that is a small caveat. The discussion of tonality is much clearer than in the other works I have read on this concerto.

The standard reference for fixed income portfolio managers
Despite their conservative nature, fixed income instruments are among the investment industry's most complex and potentially risky investments. Fixed Income Mathematics is recognized worldwide as the essential professional reference for understanding the concepts and evaluative methodologies for bonds, mortgage-backed securities, asset-backed securities, and other fixed income instruments.
This fully revised and updated fourth edition features all-new illustrations of the future and present value of money, with appendices on continuous compounding and new sections and chapters addressing risk measures, cash flow characteristics of credit-sensitive mortgage-backed and asset-backed securities, and more.
Customer Reviews:
really great book.......2007-01-06
like the handbook of fixed income securities, this is a comprehensive text. it is a great reference for the methodology of fixed income math.
Absolutely Fabulous!.......2006-05-11
I work in Equity research and recently had to move over to Fixed income. Two things happened at this stage - (a) Work-pressure dictated that I learn FI (b) I started taking a course from NYSU.
Thus, this review is applicable to both sets of people - those who're learning and those who are working.
The language - is very free-flowing and easily can be grasped.
The alma-mater - very, very professionally presented. Without spending too much time covering the absolute basics, i.e. taking the subject from ground-zero, he covers each topic from a perspective of an intelligent reader. Quickly covers the basics, the derivation explanation and then the core equation. The equation is very heavily exploded through various examples and situations. TERRIFIC stuff... really what "hits" you in work.
Critical areas which he has carefully covered this particular edition has the VERY BEST COVERAGE on the latest developments related to: (missing in prev. edition)
* Interest rates and their modelling.
* Credit risk concepts (CDS, etc. also explained)\
* Pre-payment modelling - perhaps the only book covering this ever-important subject, esp. relevant nowadays.
* Corporate bonds and their measures of risk
* MBS Structuring - don't know any book covering this!
The best - tracking errors and multi-factor risk-models... the models and techniques explored here, though rudimentary gives you that 1 single-aspect on every analyst's mind .. i.e. fear of errors. Where it might happen, how to mitigate it, pre-empt it.
