One of the most talented and witty writers today, Roger Rosenblatt showcases his talent in this series of short essays (one or two pages average). Some of the pieces are just collections of observations, others are the epitome of the craft of writing. Most of the essays have a deeper meaning hidden within the text that suddenly leaps out at you in the final sentences. Anything Can Happen is highly recommended and many of the essays could easily be used in the scholastic setting for how writing of this style should be done.

These are not what one might think of as typical essays; rather, they are disciplined flights of fancy, the work of a nimble and penetrating mind at play. There is humor and wonderful word play, as well as wistfulness and a deeply felt sense of humanity.

I have given "On Aging" to a dozen people,and made it mandatory reading in the department that I manage. Saw this one on the shelf at the bookstore and couldn't wait! Well, it's not nearly what "On Aging" is. Was he in a hurry to get something in print? Sorry, I still love the man, but this just isn't up to his standards.

Best Laugh Therapy.......2001-12-16
I love this book and have read it many times. When I have a friend who needs cheering up, I loan them my copy. It is usually passed around to their family & friends before I get it back. If ever one is in need of hope, this story provides a beautiful example of people helping, loving, laughing and eating together. It is the quintessential story of immigration to America with its deprivation, hard work and eventual success. With the help of Georg's wife, it is told with the indiosyncratic syntax of a non-native speaker of English which makes you feel the author is telling his adventures to you directly. Papashvily was an amazing person and one of the few authors that I would love to have spent an evening with listening to his stories. This makes a great gift of joy to anyone you know.
a heart-warming true story of an immigrant from Georgia, Rus.......1998-09-09
This is the story of a man who loved America from the moment he set foot on our shores. He said, and never changed his mind that, in America, "Anything Can Happen." There are many vignettes in his book, telling of his adventures and misadventures in America, but he never changed his opinion that he loved America, even though he sought the companionship of other Georgians. This book was made into a movie which fell far short of the book, which dealt with his honesty, integrity, and love for all pertaining to America and his fellow men. This book is heart-warming, poignant, and often brings a tear to the eye; in other parts it brings a chuckle or a laugh or a general thumbs-up. I have read the book a number of times not only to myself, but aloud to my family, especially when traveling. Exceptionally enjoyable were vignettes about Dzea Vanno, the wager about fitting a Nash wheel on their vehicle, Luba--who had the disposition of a camel, and at a party, his saying, regarding food, that "...only too much was ever enough", plus being outside and listening to "...people being happy and enjoying themselves in his home" (paraphrased). I heartily recommend this book to anyone!

A 5-star Hotel.......2000-09-01
Caryl Churchill is one of the most creative playwright today. Hotel consists of two musicals done in a minimalistic style. The first story takes place in a single hotel room, with all the characters appearing on stage at the same time. I particularly like the idea of having everyone on stage as if they're all superimposed onto each other like a montage.

Anyone who believes in magic in this enlightened era is pathetic. I only wish I could give it negative stars. Poorly written and edited, it is even more a waste of time than Rowling's drivel.
Good mostly for completists and Unglued fans.......2002-03-25
Volume 4 covers Urza's Saga, Urza's Legacy, Classic, Urza's Destiny, Portal: Three Kingdoms, Unglued, and Starter. As always, this volume covers ONLY those expansions released since the previous volume of the encyclopedia. After covering the individual sets, the book gives an overview of 1998 World Championship decks. The book concludes with a "Deckbuilders Indexes" section, as in the earlier volumes of the Magic encyclopedia, but this is now out of date (see Volume 6 or higher).
The introductory material (i.e., the section before the expansions are presented) is a bare minimum in this volume: "How to Use this Guide" and "A Visual Guide to Magic Cards". Each expansion covered in Volume 4, as usual, is provided with an introduction, describing any new twists added for that set (including new types of decks that came about as a result), and any noteworthy cards in that set. The introductions provide an informative overview (including descriptions of storylines that were added or updated by the release being described). The entertainment value of the introductions is in inverse proportion to the number of broken cards in the expansion and the severity of the flaws, so with the exception of the deliberately broken Unglued expansion, the introductions in this volume are rather bland. The individual cards for each expansion are listed in alphabetical order; they're shown at about 3/4 actual size. The versions of Magic that included those cards (at the time of printing) are specified, as well as any errata. The card lists' images artwork and flavour text came out well.
Having said all that, I would rate this as a mediocre, and even dull volume of the encyclopedia. Consider, if you will, that I have ranted about the encyclopedia's policy of dribbling out a few expansions at a time instead of waiting until they have a substantive amount of material built up. So why have I rated this volume as highly as I have?
I'm very fond of the Unglued expansion: that deliberately broken expansion put in for fun, deliberately designed to wind up the rules lawyers, and stuffed with in-jokes about broken cards in previous expansions. "Blacker Lotus", for example, has artwork similar to Black Lotus, and it's even more powerful - but you have to tear up the card to play it, and it's rare. Lots of cards for summoning chickens, squirrels, and clams (Clam-I-Am, Clam Session, and Clambassadors are all cute). The introduction for Unglued points out lots of little things you might miss on your own (e.g., each card has a word down by the copyright; placed in numeric order, the cards spell out a hidden message from the designers).
A great reference for Collectors.......2002-03-05
As is typical with this series, the books are great for collectors looking to complete sets. These books are also useful to anyone who plays regularly and is looking for information on cards that can help them beef up their decks.
Volume 4 - too soon.......2000-07-16
Volume 4 contains Urza Saga, Legacy, Classic, Portal-3K, Unglued, Starter as well as Top 1998 World Championship Decks. Wizard of the Coast really should wait until at least Urza Destiny come out before relasing this volume. But this is again a great book with nice picture, information as well as the printing quality is great. Although it might not be the right time to issue it but as a M:tg collector, this is one of the book that should be on your bookshelf (Volume 4).

As one of the early North American pioneers of the SAP technology in late 80's, I have assisted numerous clients in implementing complex projects in an effort to drive significant business value and the realization of business strategy. Making I/T Work does an excellent job of capturing the lessons learned over the past decade and shares a practical framework for how to get it done right. The book combines the value of change management, alignment, and dynamic planning in an easy-to-read story. It is a must read for any executive embarking on a similar journey.

Having worked with Passino since the early days of systems integration and the creation of the chief information officer role, I'm impressed to see this book. Most people think you unleash the power of technology through some grand combination of new hardware and a complex technology architecture.
Truth is, it's about people. How you work with them. How they work with the system. How you treat them.
Passino is a strategist who would agree with Michael Porter that information can help give you strategic advantage, but advantage only comes through people.

Dennis and Jacque have distilled years of experience into a couple of very simple, but very useful frameworks that give every executive the context for making I/T more effective. In addition, they effectively share their experience and the results of their interviews to identify the usual problems and then how to deal with them. A simple, quick read that is extremely useful.
Right on the Mark.......2002-10-24
Having spent 32 years in Information Technology, I find this book right on the mark. It is a must read for ALL CEOs and their I/T executive that may be contemplating a major change in their orgainzation or heading into to a project of any type or size. The authors use more than a half century of experience to describe how any major project, with or without an I/T component, will fail if proper management techniques and practices are not understood and followed. You may even think this book is about you and if you don't read it carefully and heed the advise, it may well be in the future!
Focus on what matters.......2002-10-23
Making I/T Work outlines an effective methodology for planning and executing technology initiatives. One of the nice things about the book is how it alternates between narrative and lesson, one reinforcing the other. And this is done in a style that is knowledgeable and confident without being preachy or pedantic.
However, Severance and Passino have written a book that goes beyond IT implementation in its message to executives. Based on solid research and practical experience, Severance and Passino have provided a framework for bringing an organization together focusing on a common goal and executing according to a plan. Some would label this 'change management'. I would call it a platform for competitive advantage on a sustained basis. As the authors point out, knowing what to do really isn't all that difficult. Where the majority of companies have trouble is in execution. Great book!
