Book Description
This impressive, informative book portrays the progress of Haviland china in form and decoration from the formative years in the 1840s-1860s, through the development of porcelain manufacturing in the 1870s-1880s, and on into the twentieth century, which brought many changes to the Haviland companies. Over 570 beautiful color photographs show the progression of patterns and style. The early multifloral and botanical designs, the Japanese influence, the Impressionist, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles, and recent patterns and shapes all have made Haviland china a porcelain of importance today. To enable the reader to identify patterns, many are cataloged by Schleiger numbers, the form of pattern identification preferred by most Haviland matchers. Also included are sections on setting a proper table, pieces that made up a complete set, and interesting stories about famous and influential people who ate from Haviland china. A listing of back marks and current market prices is included.

With only 3300 hand-numbered issues its a MUST have item........1998-11-06
Visionaire 24 LIGHT with guest editor Tom Ford for Gucci is a Double deluxe issue. It comes in a magical, revolutionary format consisting of a flexible Luminagraphics light panel packaged in a black foam-lined box which is used to view the 24 transparent and panaramic photgraphic plates. LIGHT is encased in a shiny black plexiglas case (similar in style to the new fragrance for men by Gucci - ENVY), and "custom-manufactured" by Gucci for Visionaire - need I say more. The theme is LIGHT and Visionaire as in the past have brought together cutting-edge imagemakers from the worlds of fashion and art to convey their own interpretation of LIGHT. We have the likes of Mario Testino using Lasers to convey his view of light which is titled "Patience" and then we have Alexander McQueen whose view is somewhat differnt, but very McQueen, titled "United Explosion", there is a hint in the title. Well you can't really go wrong with Visionaire and Tom Ford being behind this masterpiece. I can see LIGHT just like Visionaire 18 (Fashion Special) which came in a Louis Vuittton slip case becoming a very demaded item and auctioning at 1000% the original price just like Visionaire 18 did recently in London. It was auctioned at $7000 and was bought for only $75. Its a MUST have for Visionaire Collectors and anyone who appreciates art and fashion to the extreme, as for the rest stick to Vogue Magazine and Art Expo's unless you have a few extra notes lying around. With only 3300 hand-numbered issues globally all I can say is - GRAB IT WHILE YOU CAN! - otherwise it will sell out and become a priceless item.

Capitalizing on the popularity of one of comics' hottest artists, Fantastic Four Visionaries: George Perez, Vol. 1 collects 11 issues of the "world's greatest comic magazine" from 1974-76 when Perez was making guest-penciler appearances (other artists from that run included Rich Buckler, John Buscema, Sal Buscema, Ron Wilson, and Jack Kirby). It may not have been a pivotal period for the FF, but "Rascally" Roy Thomas was crafting a number of interesting story lines, such as both the Thing and Mr. Fantastic losing their powers, and Agatha Harkness's abduction of young Franklin Richards. The drawback, however, of basing a collection around an irregular artist is that the run of issues is not consecutive--in this case, the included issues are 164-167, 170, 176-178, and 184-186. That means stories are begun but not concluded, or they start out of nowhere with only brief recaps of what happened before. It's good reading, but not without a fair amount of frustration. --David Horiuchi
Book Description
Before his cross-company fame for Disturbing Crises and Avenger adventures, Perez put the World's Greatest Super-Team through its paces - and first up was a fight with a fabulous fifties favorite! The Thing gets replaced in the FF, but who's replacing Mr. Fantastic in... the Frightful Four? Also featuring the Incredible Hulk, Luke Cage, the High Evolutionary, and costumed characters never seen before or since! Collects Fantastic Four #164-167, #170, #176-178, #184-186.

A horrible idea, yet Marvel insists..........2006-10-31
Once again, Marvel Comics releases a "Visionaries" book covering work by an artist. No offense to George Perez - he's a great artist with some legendary work to his name, but FANTASTIC FOUR VISIONARIES: GEORGE PEREZ VOLUME 1 contains some of his early work for Marvel, and I'm guessing that his art was not the sole reason that folks bought the comics herein when they were first released. In fact, I'd even bet that many comic readers didn't even know George had worked on the FF until this trade paperback came out. Collecting FF # 164-167, 170, 176-178, and 184-186 from 1974 - 76, it's an uneven selection in the fact that it only collects the issues that Perez pencilled (and irregularly, at that), resulting in incomplete storylines and references to stories that are not included. Honestly, writers Roy Thomas and Len Wein deserve the credit here. They do a great job in continuing with the Lee/Kirby flair for the amazing and the dramatic, as well as the self-deprecating humor. These factors and more make the absence of certain stories all the more obvious and awkward. The complete sequence of stories would make an excellent Essentials edition, but certainly not a collection under George Perez' name. If he's such a visionary, and if Marvel refuses to collect the stories he didn't illustrate, then I have a proposal for Marvel, to be used on future Visionaries titles that focus on an artist: delete all the text and dialogue, replacing it with gibberish, or even no words at all, letting us stare in awe at the art and not get bogged down with pithy elements such as story. Then we'll see how well it sells. Please understand, I'm not bashing Perez - I love the man and his work, but it's absurd to claim him as the visionary when there are so many other people responsible for the quality of these stories. So cut it out, Marvel! Give credit where credit is due, and give us some complete storylines!!!
Anyway, I'll get off of my soapbox and address the facts: herein you will witness the FF confronting the Crusader (formerly Marvel Boy), the Frightful Four (sort of), the Brute (aka Reed Richards of an alternate Earth), the Incredible Hulk, the Eliminator, and Salem's Seven, to name a few, plus appearances from Agatha Harkness, the Impossible Man, Thundra, Tigra, the Marvel Bullpen, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, and *shriek!* Ronald Reagan! Yes, this book is packed full of fun - just be warned that you might be scratching your head when reading the obligatory expository dialogue at the beginning of each issue, 'cause some of the stories referenced aren't included! I guess it's a testament to the skills of the writers that they are able to fill in the holes well enough that you should be able to figure it out. In closing, I'd prefer to give this book 2.5 stars, but that's unfortunately not the way it works.
Good but not essential or great.......2005-09-29
I will not lie, this is not the greatest stories or georges best work on the art side, this book was put out because the new fantastic four movie was coming out and they hoped to put out some stories with big names on it, well george perez one of the greatest artists ever had a short run on the title so they highlighted his work.
now on the art side it's good standard perez, it's not bad or even close, it's just not some of his greatest work that we would see on titles like the JLA, superman, avengers and others, I bring this up because a collection with his name on it will bring in people to see his art alone, and it's not worth it just for that.
but it is worth getting for the story if you have been looking for another good F4 trade, the stories are good stories, not highlights of the f4, it's not the byrne era, some great turning point or epic world bending story, but they are good strong stories that are fun to read, so if you, like me, were looking for another f4 trade after reading all the byrne and waid and stan lee f4 books, then get this, but dont make it your first F4, don't pass up mark waids run that is all traded, or the cheap essential books with the stan lee era.
so remember, weak does not equal bad when compared to the many stories in it's history, but it does not for me equal top of my shopping list ether.

"God's tip of the day: If you're at a fancy restaurant, don't fill up on bread" is not very funny just sitting there on the page. The problem with a book of stand-up jokes is that if you don't read them with the timing and verve of a polished comedian, they just aren't funny. So as Jon Macks is the head writer for The Tonight Show (now transcribing divine revelation), what you have to do is pretend you are Jay Leno giving his monologue. Do this: stand up, put your hands in your pockets, and take them out to gesture at a critical moment; finish a joke with a shrug of the shoulders and a coy, "I don't know"; and if all else fails, look over at Kevin Eubanks and ask him about his girlfriend. Okay? Now try this one: "What gender is God? I am what I am. I am neither male nor am I female. So technically, you are not in my image, Michael Jackson is." There, wasn't that better? How about this one: "I have a plan for each and every one of you. The problem is, the last time I merged my files, I lost it." Like Neale Donald Walsch's books, this is a conversation with God. Is it sacrilegious? Yes. But, hey, He's God; He can do what He wants. --Brian Bruya

LENO'S INTRO: AMAZINGLY BAD.......2007-09-26
The book was not very funny. It wasn't terrible, but rather bland. And the subject matter has been covered before. My one star review is for Jay Leno's introduction, which is embarrassingly poorly written! The stilted wording, lame attempts at humor, bad grammar...wasn't this edited?
I know from the two times I've watched his program that Leno is not the sharpest tool in the shed, but this was unbelievable. Jay's IQ is not so high.
God, as Heard by Jon Macks.......2001-09-13
Jon Mack's book tells of his conversations with God. Jon believes God speaks in clear sentences, suitable for publishing. Before we decry either the irreverence of this book, and definitely before we divest all our assets to devoutly follow Jon's every word, we do have to wonder if Jon hears God correctly. Especially when he writes God as stating "You want to play God? Be my guest, it's all yours. Guaranteed, two weeks on the job, you quit from all the aggrevation."
The book does provide some interesting insights into the Supreme Being. God appears to feel He is being taken advantage of, as when He reportedly asks us "Just once I'd like to have someone make a sacrifice or a burnt offering without immediately following up with a demand. Surprise me this weekend."
The book contains a bonus interview with God along with a forward from Jay Leno, for whom Jon authors jokes. Jan Leno complains about being unable to book God for the "Tonight Show", a move that would guarantee a rating win that evening over Letterman and maybe even Ted Koppel.
Some may be disappointed with this book's small size. While less wordy than, say, the Bible, the book does contain many more yucks than lenghthier humor books.

How odd that someone from NBC gave it their highest rating...
Pathetic. Glad I borrowed it from someone or there'd be some slappin'.
I looked for the humor, but................1999-02-18
If I don't like this book it's because I don't have a sense of humor?????? (That's what one of the customer reviewers said.)I am a writer, and believe me, this is not funny, not a bit. This is someone who has connections to get a book published. It's as simple as that. I am astonished that people think this is funny. They must be the people that go to see Beavis and Butthead and Ace Ventura movies. They probably think those movies are funny also. Now you know why they like this book. It's not for a very sophisticated group.
I also am surprised that so much of the material is old stuff that's been used ad infinitum. I mean, do we need to hear another Marv Alpert joke? Jewish jokes? Author Macks only need to feel proud that he got this one by the publishers. He's not clever, just lucky to have caught the publisher on an off day....
If you don't think this book is funny, then..........1998-12-29
you don't have a sense of humor. Jon Macks does a wonderful job of poking fun at our daily lives. I bought a copy of this book for my brother who spent most of Christmas day reading it and laughing...and my brother is a minister! This is a great book for taking a lighter and funnier view of today's world.

Book Description
The life and times of the last great American hipster
Sammy Davis, Jr. (1925-90) rose from childhood stardom on the vaudeville stage to become one of the most famous African American entertainers of the 1950s and '60s (and the only black member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack). At the same time, he spent most of his career surrounded by controversy and ridicule--over his affairs with white film stars like Kim Novak and Jean Seberg; his 1960 marriage to Swedish actress May Britt; his conversion to Judaism; his closeness to the Kennedys and, later, Richard Nixon; and his problems with alcohol and drugs.
Davis comes alive in this collection of writings about him, including a 1966 Playboy interview by Alex Haley; an excerpt from the 1983 autobiography of porn star Linda Lovelace; profiles from The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and The Saturday Evening Post; and articles from many prominent African American periodicals. The Sammy Davis, Jr. Reader is a composite portrait of a complex, self-conscious man and the society that treated him, for more than forty years, with passionate ambivalence.

Fills in the gaps left by the autobiographies.......2001-10-24
If you're interested enough in Sammy to have read "Yes I Can" and "Why Me?" (or at least the compiled "Sammy: an Autobiography"), then this book is an absolute must. Any autobiography is bound to have a flattering slant, but this collection tilts the balance back to level.
Editor Gerald Early offers a lengthy foreward which, at first, I thought a bit self-indulgent until I began to grasp the depth of affection he feels for his subject. Don't skip this foreward; it gets better in the later sections.
The writings in the collection are taken from various autobiographies and other texts about the era, and are insightfully organized. This book is not thoughtlessly thrown together; this is clearly a labor of love. In the first 50 pages alone I had enough of my personal Sammy myths dispelled to recommend the book. I can't help but think how I would have felt had I been the editor. The book certainly doesn't try to slam Sammy, but it does offer the bad along with the good, and it can't have been a painless decision to include some of this material. The excerpt from his daughter's book is particularly revealing, and the bit from Linda Lovelace's autobiography is nothing short of disturbing.
Sammy's own tellings of his life story are far from entirely flattering, but this excellent book brings the legend down from even that level, down to where we all live. Sammy was not a perfect man. He was a masterful entertainer. He was a lousy father. He had a heart of gold. He was into some horrifyingly self-destructive behavior. If you love Sammy the artist as much as I do, you owe it to yourself (after reading the autobiography, I think) to read this volume. It's a real eye-opener. And despite the ugly reality it sometimes offers, it hasn't diminished my love and respect for Sammy one bit. Quite the opposite.

Excellent for the beginner.......2007-07-04
This book is excellent for a beginner, speaking as a beginner. I have carved Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus without any complications. Illustrations are perfect along with well written instructions. If you desire to carve a nativity set but shy away due to the appeared difficulty, this is book will remove any hesitations. Flat plane carving does not have quite a much detail, but is similar to the Willow Tree style of carving. This will definitly allow you to produce a quality nativity set that can become a family heirloom.

Horrible Experience.......2007-03-09
I ordered this book on 1/30/2007 and todays date is 3/8/2007 and I am still waiting on my order...Actually, I am no longer waiting anymore because my school semester is more than half over and I no longer have a need for this book. TOO LATE!! I have actually called my bank and insisted that I be given back the money that Amazon has charged me for the services (the book) I have never received. Not a good experience at all!
GREAT book for learning excel and Finance.......2006-09-24
I really enjoyed using this book. The author did a great job of explaining the topics...well wortht the time and price.
Not disappointed at all.......2006-08-03
Great book, step by step approach, but still requires basic knowledge of Excel's core functions. The CD provided is definitely a plus.
No access to Excel files for eBook version.......2006-02-02
I spent a lot of money on this eBook only to find out that I would not receive the Excel files that go along with it. I am stuck either going through this book without the files that it uses throughout or shelling out even more money to buy a hardcopy version just for the attached CD.
Not for professional.......2006-01-29
Just for basic models. Not enough description on complex financial models.
