Isabelle Dufresne, aka 'Ultra Violet', was an heiress who entered Andy Warhol's circle in the late 1950s. She describes her decadent lifestyle in far more detail than I wanted to read, but she makes no excuses for herself. She admits her mistakes, but along the way she meets everyone who was anyone during the wild 1960s. The book gives an insider's look into Warhol's famous 'Factory', and concludes with an extensive listing of those who survived it and those who didn't. It is a very interesting read.

The One-shot. Typically that describes a failure. It's certainly not a very optimistic description. But keep in mind that the sum total of Angel Dust's monthly magazine run fits into just ONE volume.

    One.
One is a lonely number. Compare that to the epic Dragon Ball which is hosted in 42 volumes.

In a Grindhouse film preview, perhaps the trailer would carry on like this: "From the pages of Newtype comes a halfhearted non-epic in the vein of 'Bee-Men From Venus,' produced on a similar budget and just as meaningful! Terror and dread almost kinda don't really affect much! If you have a heart condition, go ahead and read this slow-witted beauty fest!"

The problem isn't necessarily one of length, though, but one of depth. Many writers have packed a powerful story into a thin stack of paper, but Angel Dust lack the guts to be successful and the unremarkable, inaccessible storytelling is mostly to blame. In this day and age, mysterious demigods falling from the sky is pretty common. But more importantly, this tale lacks a sense of self-importance. Take "Ah! My Goddess!" and remove all the sweet juices it runs on, and you get Angel Dust.

I've always loved Aoi Nanase's artwork, and I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that her first work as a professional artist appeared in the manga insert for Newtype USA three years go. Angel/Dust's story reflected Aoi Nanase's uncertainty of herself at the time; who wouldn't be nervous when your first gig as a professional artist is to do a 9-month serialization in one of Japan's top anime magazines?

Aoi Nanase was able to channel her dilemma into Yuina, the main character of the story. Yuina, like the author who created her, was comfortable with her current life, but she wished for more, to do what she really wanted to do. But she is afraid of what she must do in order to move forward. In the author's case, that is coming up with an original story and meeting monthly deadlines while overcoming the fear of believing that she's not ready to become a professional artist just yet. For Yuina, she must stop letting the biggest mistake in her life consume her in order to continue to do what she loves the most. The Emulates in Yuina's story are there to place further emphasis that she is special and can do anything if she puts aside all doubts. The conclusion is executed gracefully, as it gives satisfying closure to Yuina's story while leaving it open-ended enough so if Aoi Nanase wanted to make another story within the Angel/Dust universe, she could use completely new characters if she wanted to, which is what she did with Angel/Dust Neo.

Unfortunately, this stand-alone version of Angel/Dust saddens me. I can understand that US publishers need to cut some corners in order to keep costs down, but the decisions made for this release are rather questionable. The first decision was to reduce the size even further from the Japanese stand-alone release in order to match the current manga height standard set by Tokyopop. The second decision was to (perhaps unintentionally) screw up the images so it looks like each page was first shrunk and then blown up before they were printed; you can easily tell from either looking at the Japanese stand-alone version or from the Newtype USA manga inserts of Angel/Dust to realize that the images are clearer and sharper there than they are in this book. The third and final decision ADV decided to make was to price this manga higher than the Japanese version, which was priced at 895 yen, (but Amazon Japan charges the same price as the US version) the latter being larger in size, has a fold out color poster, two color-printed pages (and colored the blood spots that are found in page 101 of the US release oddly enough), a color dust jacket of the images that were also used for the US version, and a bunch of other inserts in there that you probably don't want to throw away.

I still bought this version just to have the convenience of having the English translation of the story and to show my support for ADV for releasing Aoi Nanase's work over here. Perhaps I was stupid, since there should be no excuse for the kinds of mistakes made in this stand-alone release of Angel/Dust as the Newtype USA inserts looked completely fine. I would've paid $10.95 for clean images without a dust jacket and/or the other things found in the Japanese release, but as it stands, even at the reduced price that Amazon's offering for this specific version, I'd only recommend this to anyone who can't afford buying the nine issues of Newtype USA that has this series as its manga insert or for those who want to have a taste of what Aoi Nanase can do, but do not have the luxury of being proficient in Japanese or in any other language of its respective country to where this title was published.

Shame on you, ADV. I know you can do better than this, and if the stand-alone release of Angel/Dust Neo is going to end up like this, I might consider not even purchasing it since I already own the Japanese version, and I'll just rely on fan-translations of it instead.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Artwork.......2006-02-08

I have been an anime fan as long as I can remember and I came across this looking for a present for my friends birthday. The art is originally caught my eye and needless to say this is a good manga for it.

However its somewhat lacking in story in my opinion. It seems more like a short story then a series but its not a totally snore fest.

Yuina is a girl who wants nothing more then to blend in and not cause problems for anyone. Her father left her with her "auntie" after her mother died and she is to stay their till she is 18. Needless to say she is a smart perfect attendance school girl till on her way to school an angelic android falls from the sky and makes a contract with her. Suddenly she is being herself and simulating with this android to become well an angle savoir type thing. Like I said this book is not much for details or story in my opinion really. This coming from a die hard Yu Watese fan.

I would recommend this book however, it is a nice read and the art goes above and beyond expeditions.

      Book Description

Geary explores the first assassination of one of our presidents in the hands of an obsessive-compulsive stalker, a deluded loser who thought his action would bring him national glory. Once again, beyond a mere presentation of facts, the author surreptitiously peels for us a bit of our national psyche.

      3 out of 5 stars Not really a "Murder".......2007-02-02

I'm a fan of this series. There are good entries and less good entries. I discovered them with the Jack the Ripper volume which I like to read at night before bedtime. There are two aspects of that book I wish Geary would return to. The first is that the crime is scandalous and unsolved (as is the Borden case), the second is that none of the victims was a president!

This is really not about juicy, low Victorian murders which I would think is the appeal of a series with that title. Once a president is involved you're into assasinations, which to my mind are a different thing. Curling up with a book about an assasination in which the killer is known & villified for his failings, the victim lingers, and in which all the answers are found before you're done just doesn't hold the same appeal.

People who are seeking history seem to like the book.

5 out of 5 stars Fun way to learn history.......2002-01-27

When I ordered this book, I thought it was a short textual history of the assasination of President James Garfield. It turns out that this book is in comic book format with the story being told by dialogue and cartoon illustrations. However, I really enjoyed the book and learned a lot about Garfield, his assasin, Charles Guiteau, and Garfield's slow death.

Guiteau was basically a loser in life and had even served time in jail. He was constantly skipping out on creditors and and he showed signs of mental illness. He was dillusional and thought that Garfield would apppoint him to an ambassadorship. He literally stalked both Garfield and Secretary of State Blaine in an attempt to secure the appointment. When it was not forthcoming, he stalked Garfield (this was in the days before the secret service) until he had the opportunity to shoot the President.

The wound caused a rupture in an artery but an aneurism sealed off the opening so he did not bleed to death. Garfield lingered for many weeks until the aneurism ultimately ruptured and Garfield died. The location of the bullet had not been located and the aneurism had gone untreated. Today, Garfield's condition would have almost certainly been diagnosed through an MRI and he may have survived delicate surgery which would have saved his life.

In reading history, we generally get a line or two about Garfield being assasinated by a "disappointed office seeker." It was enjoyable to learn more about this event, particularly in such an unusual literary format.

      5 out of 5 stars A true eye-opener...........2001-09-28

As a history buff, and a fan of Rick Geary's, I knew I'd enjoy this book, but I had no idea how much! The book tells the paralell stories of President James A. Garfield and his stalker (and eventual assassin) Charles Giteau, an abysmal failure in every aspect of life; indeed, his ONLY success in life was the murder of President Garfield, and he almost botched that up, too. Garfield lingered for months after the attack, dying perhaps more as a result of medical incompetence than Giteau's efforts.
Geary's wonderfully cartoony art is reminiscent of claymation; it gives a true illusion of depth and form. He is truly one of the underrated geniuses of the Comic art form. His meticulous research gives us many interesting facts, such as The President being allowed to walk around Washington D.C. unescorted (No Secret Service yet), Abraham Lincoln's son's association with Garfield, and too many others to count. Do yourself a favor- read the book!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to this little-remembered event.......2000-11-23

This entry in Rick Geary's series on Victorian murders examines the assassination of President James Garfield by Charles J. Guiteau, a megalomaniacal failure at preaching, the law, and almost everything else he had tried. The drawings are evocative of the time and place, and give a clear idea of the events. The lives of Garfield and Guiteau are traced, and Guiteau's mental illness is made quite clear; today, he would almost certainly be sharing a room with John Hinckley. I'd like to see this whole series reprinted: one of them is out of print and apparently unavailable.

This volume finds the proper place of psychoanalytic thought in critical analysis of cinema through a series of essays that debate its legitimacy, utility, and validity as applied to the horror genre. It distinguishes itself from previous work in this area through the self-consciousness with which psychoanalytic concepts are employed and the theorization that coexists with interpretations of particular horror films and subgenres.

When the publishers of Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians set out to revise their monumental reference work in the 1970s, they commissioned new biographies of many composers. They then extracted some of those biographies from the finished product, added some details to make them a more interesting sit-down read, and issued them as separate volumes. Unlike the complete Grove, this biography of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is both portable and affordable. Nearly one third of its length is devoted to a listing of his works, arranged by type (opera, sacred) and date. There are many biographies of Mozart on the market; this one makes a good starting place and handy reference.

        Book Description

A child prodigy who performed throughout Europe in his early years, this Austrian composer excelled in every medium of his time, including chamber music for strings, the piano concerto, and opera. Along with his contemporaries Haydn and Beethoven, he is one of the composers who brought the Viennese Classical style to its height. Mozart's mature music, distiniguished by its melodic beauty, formal perfection, and richness of harmony and texture, is deeply colored by Italian opera though rooted in Austrian and south German traditions. He is widely regarded as the most universal composer in the history of Western music. The New Grove Mozart is the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to one of the world most beloved composers.About The New Grove II Composer Biography Series:These new, fully re-written editions of some of the most popular titles in the New Grove composer biography series last published in the 1980s build on the enormous success of those books, offering fresh new insights drawn from the most recent scholarship. Focusing on some of the greatest and most influential composers of the last few centuries of the millennium, these titles are derived from the second edition of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Most excitingly, as they will be published before the dictionary, they offer sneak previews of some of the best, most up-to-date entries in this landmark, end-of-the-century edition of the most authoritative, comprehensive, and widely respected music encyclopedia in the world. In addition to the re-written editions of The New Grove Wagner, The New Grove Haydn, and The New Grove Mozart comes for the first time The New Grove Stravinsky, the first in a series of New Grove composer biographies that will cover the great masters of the 20th century, never before published as individual volumes. This series is edited by Stanley Sadie and John Tyrrell. Both men live in the United Kingdom and have edited The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, Second Edition.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful overview of Mozart's life and work.......2000-06-28

This is the first book I reach for when I want basic information on Mozart. It is compact enough to read straight through in a few hours; it is also well-organized for reference by subject. There is succinct coverage of everything you'd want in a composer's biography: dates, events, family, colleagues, works; there is a good amount of musical analysis, a few pages of autograph manuscript, portraits of the composer, a lengthy bibliography, and a work list. This includes dates, key, forces required, title where applicable, and Koechel number(s).

There is no mental analysis or minute examination of the Baesle letters or anything of the sort here, just the "hard facts" on Mozart--and plentiful guidance on where to look next if you need more information on a great composer.

          Book Description

Each entry in this New Grove series of composers and their operas is based on articles in The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, that feature information on the lives of individual composers, their works, their librettists and interpreters, and the places where they performed. These unique books compile the meticulously researched articles into organized narratives, designed to make finding information as easy as possible without sacrificing readability. Each volume is completely up-to-date, and includes a suggested listening guide and an eight-page glossy insert containing relevant illustrations. Each volume is a must-own for lovers of opera and classical music. One of the best known and most admired figures in European music was Wolfgang Amade Mozart. His short but colorful life is of enduring interest, and his works remain central to the repertories of classical music. This book gives a concise and scholarly account of Mozart's activities as a composer of operas. It includes a concise biography, orientated towards the operas; an essay on Mozart's operatic contribution and style, and the antecedents to his operas; a separate synopsis and historical account of each opera; and three essays which bind into narrative form the dictionary entries on librettists, interpreters, and venues. There is a new introduction, a glossary of relevant terms, a list of operatic roles, and a guide to listening.

Although the material in this useful new volume is culled from the New Grove Dictionary of Opera, there is no sense of dry, academic detachment. The "Interpreters" section, for example, concentrates on singers and conductors who created the canonical operas, and the juxtapositions of repertory are fascinating.

Many readers will first be drawn to the excellent synopses of the operas (including the early, unfamiliar works). Julian Rushton's contributions are exemplary. He manages to cover the sprawling plot of The Magic Flute with economy yet still find room to make an interpretive point about the Papageno-Papagena duet and address the issue of antifeminism in this work. His notes on Cosi fan tutte don't neglect the touchy subject of how the opera is supposed to end. Rushton acknowledges the difficulty of ordering the scenes in Act III of The Marriage of Figaro while still keeping the plot foremost.

The book includes a glossary (which, however, lacks an entry for buffo), an index to names of roles, and a few musical examples. Readers will want much more discussion of the performance histories of the works, but will not otherwise be disappointed. The series also includes volumes on Wagner, Puccini, and Verdi. --William R. 4 out of 5 stars Love this book! But..........2004-01-24

This is a great book. It has an information sheet about each state with interesting facts, then it has a couple pages of games related to the facts. This is one of the neatest, most useful state-study books I've come across yet. My only gripe? Well, most states have a letter game where you answer questions about the state using some sort of letter code corresponding with numbers...only problem is, they didn't bother to include the code! So I've had to waste a lot of time cracking the code myself and typing it up so that my students can do the worksheets. With the price I paid for the book, I shouldn't have to do that! (My teacher's aide quipped that I must have forgotten to purchase the secret decoder ring that this book obviously requires.) Other than that, this is a great book and I highly recommend it for a simple but thorough and informative study of our great country.
PS I'm intrigued by the idea of sending a stuffed animal all across the country...how does that work? Please let me know!! It sounds fun! LisaM5305@aol.com

5 out of 5 stars great resource for homeschoolers.......2004-01-14

We are using this book to study the 50 states in our homeschool. The activities are lots of fun. My son is in the third grade. Along with this study we have stuffed animal that is visiting each state by mail and we learn about the state he is in at the time. We are having so much fun with this project!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for new agents or seasoned!.......2007-09-25

I am an experienced agent, but bought this book after about my first year in the business. I went through a stage where I searched Amazon for all books related to the business of real estate that had good reviews and purchased them. Then it sat on my shelf for about a year or so. Things got so busy and hectic that I didn't have time to read anything! I moved out of state and started up again in my new location so I had some free time on my hands.

After reading this book, I was sorry I didn't go through it sooner. Regardless of that - it reminded me of some basic principles that got lost along the way and it was just a fantastic refresher. I HIGHLY recommend this book to new agents and it has certainly earned it's spot on my book shelf to flip through now and again.

Very few parts of the book I would consider 'out-dated' for the way we do business today - it gets back to the basics of selling and client prospecting. There was a time when agents got into this business and didn't have to learn any of it - clients fell in their lap. The world of real estate is changing and it's going back to the 'good ole days'. New agents, relish in the many scripts and suggestions this book will offer to you.

                  Wishing you all success....

3 out of 5 stars More of the same.......2007-01-04

I was somewhat disappointed in this book. I work for Century21 and had higher expectations. I found the material in this book to be a repeat of all of the other books I've read on how to be a top producer. If you REALLY, REALLY want to know how to get listings, I recommend Bill Nasby's Door to Success CD series. In fact I would recommend any of the Bill Nasby products over what I've read by people claiming to have the materials you need to be a top producer.

5 out of 5 stars New to real estate.......2006-10-17

Hamilton has outlned some very effective strategies. I'm making it work already. The book is worth the investment. Rewards I hope to reap: satisfied customers, seamless deals, increased sales. Full of ideas, this book is good.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, Everything you need.......2005-10-07

I have never written a review on this site before. This book compelled me to do so. Mr Hamiltom breaks it down to the nitty gritty. He includes scripts, for prospecting, how to deal with FSBO's, even with no call. I have purchased many books on selling real estate but this is by far the best. Next is "Keller's" book "TMREA". This book is newer and better in my opinion than the new D. Kennedy book. Newbie's or 3 year veteran buy it.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!.......2005-08-02

This book is an excellent tool for learning how to be successfull in real estate. Whether you have been in the business 10 years or just starting this book is very helpful.
