Book Description
Rick has researched this book extensively and presents, with his own inimitable tongue-in-cheek style, the Jack The Ripper mystery as told through a journal of a fascinated Englishman of the day. Both factual and darkly funny, Geary¹s personal take on this story shines an ironic light on the repressive society that spawned such a monster.
Customer Reviews:
Chilling unsolved crime as recorded by a contemporary, with Geary's fantastic pictures.......2006-07-10
The title page says it all: "A Journal of the Whitechapel Murders 1888-1889 Adapted by Rick Geary." Don't expect shocking new "revelations" or speculations as to the identity of the Ripper; the text comprises excerpts from the journals of an anonymous Victorian chronicler of the Ripper's crimes. Yet it is precisely the ordinary, "following the day's news" quality of this account that is so chilling---it reminds the reader that the lost lives of these poor women were REAL and that their murders were never solved. Geary's renderings, as always, succeed admirably in fleshing out the journal entries, and his use of maps as backgrounds for many of his panels is ingenious. Reading this book was a fine approximation of taking a Ripper walking tour through Whitechapel.
Just the facts.......2005-02-15
Jack the Ripper is a fact based comic. The story is told in the form of excerpts from an unamed Victorian man's journal. He says on this day this occurred on this day this body was found here, etc. The idea is to lay out just the facts and not to try to read into them. Theories on who the killer is etc are presented very briefly as they come up and no one theory is endorsed.
The visuals: The drawings here are done in a style that simulates wood cut prints. This lend itself to descriptive diagrammatic illustrations. It also keeps the gore from being so disturbing. This book isn't dwelling on the gore, but it isn't totally possible to avoid it in this case. The drawings of crime scenes etc here are very accurate, so the illustrations add to the information presented.
This is a good clean and straight forward telling of the Jack the Ripper stories. It lays out the facts and does this clearly and concisely. If you have already read lots about Jack the Ripper then this won't add anything new. It is also pretty expensive for a black and white comic book, since it is only 64 pages. The best use for this book is perhaps for families or school libraries that want a book about Jack the Ripper. It does tell about a slasher who kills prostitutes, but it is a clean treatment considering the subject.
A pleasure for the eye and mind.......2004-10-04
I knew just the basics about Jack the Ripper when I picked this up in a used bookstore. The drawings were so detailed and clarified logistics (maps, diagrams, plans) in a way that text cannot. The text is extremely straightforward and reality-based, giving them an authority that hyperbole would've ruined. I had no intentions of buying this, but I had a hard time putting it down.
Years later, this has turned out to be one of those purchases that I pull out over and over again. It is never far from my bed and sits with two other (soon to be three) volumes in the series. All of them lay out conundrums that leave you chilled and uneasy. You go to bed a little less sure that all is right in the world.
Once I was flipping channels on cable and the image of an alley with a distinct bend to it flashed by. "...looked like an alley from the the Ripper killings..." I thought and changed back. Sure enough, it was a documentary on the Ripper. That's how accurate this books visuals are. I correctly associated a photo I had never seen before with the crimes just from viewing Geary's drawings. His illustrative style is fastidious and engrossing.
True to it's title I do treasure these volumes.
Best of luck and much success to you Rick!
Disappointment.......2004-08-07
If I had wanted a picture book, done in a comic book format, this would have been fine. It was not what I was looking for - I expected a more intellectual treatment. Will NOT but Geary again.
wonderful graphic novel.......2004-07-01
A truly great graphic novel. Geary continues his amazing series of "A Treasury of Victorian Murder" with probably what is the most brilliant installment. The story of Jack the Ripper is explained from somewhat of a historically unbiased and objective view without being overloaded with too many sources. The comic contains a documentary side while melding description, assumption, and mystery alongside great graphic images. I have not found a flaw in Geary series other than some dissapointment with "The Borden Tragedy." I would also suggest
Peter Kuper's adaptatation of Kafka's "The Metamorphosis."

If you've ever wondered whether you're going to hell, Betty Bowers has an answer for you--and it is a soft, self-satisfied "Yes." What Would Betty Do?, a satire of self-righteousness, collects the ravings of "America's Best Christian," a creation of the writer Paul A. Bradley. The book is organized as a send-up of Christian advice manuals, including sections on Bible study, sex, fashion, and social justice ("The Poor Will Always Be with Us, So We Needn't Break a Heel Rushing to Help Them"). Betty is at her best with snappy one-liners (such as "So close to Jesus, He validates my parking," and "If God created me in His image, I have more than returned the compliment") and wicked acronyms ("B.A.S.H." is an ex-gay ministry: "Baptists Are Saving Homosexuals"). Betty nails the target of fundamentalist hubris with aplomb, but as the book goes on and the same jokes appear again and again, satire also verges into sneering. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Betty Bowers is a better Christian than you!
In a world of reflected glory and shameless name-dropping, no one can touch America's most puritanical pundit, Betty Bowers. Betty is so close to Jesus, He's given her His loaves and fish recipe. And only Betty knows how many shopping days there are until the Apocalypse. As she is fond of saying: "If God created me in His image, I have more than returned the compliment!"
In Prada and in prayer, Betty has devoted her life to bringing people the Good News: They are going straight to Hell. Thousands have aspired to emulate her joie d'apres vivre by logging on to her popular website, bettybowers.com. But only now, with What Would Betty Do? does she finally reveal her spiritual survival secrets. You'll discover how, come Judgment Day, to be whisked through the 10 Sins or Less express line. But first, you will have to learn how to vote (for God's Own Party, the Republicans), whom to hate (Lie-berals and other non-Baptists), and what to throw (a soirée -- and then a few stones!). "After all," warns Betty, "if Heaven is just going to involve running into all the people you avoided on Earth, what would be the point?"
Unchic? Unsaved? Wavering faith? Wandering hands? A pair of $650 Manolo Blahnik pumps that won't go with anything? No problem! Just ask yourself -- What would Betty do?
Customer Reviews:
For the deliciously doomed..........2007-09-25
Neither God nor the Devil would DARE mess with Ms. Bowers! Guaranteed, not a politically correct syllable to be found anywhere between the covers. If you have had it up to here with puerile religion-mongering and blatant attacks on the U.S. Constitution over the last 6 years by the willfully ignorant and superstitious you will love this book. And as with some of the believers who have commented, if you have the ability to laugh at yourself you will love it just because it's funny. Don't pass up the chance to be counted amongst Betty's unworthy!
Religious Humor.......2007-08-31
My pastor and I immediately identified Betties traits among three women in the congregation. Her traits are unfortunately too common in the main stream Christian Churches, as well as among Betty's Southern Baptists. You will meet her kind in every church you go to. Smile, and think of Betty
I can only think of three words to describe this book: "Fab-U-Lous".......2006-09-23
Think of this fine book as the "cheese" that would go very well with your wine and crackers during Holy Communion.
Although no book could ever take the place of the Bible, this book is a fantastic accompaniment to the Word of God.
Mrs. Betty Bowers truly is America's Best Christian, and her "What Would Betty Do?" book totally blows "Gone With The Wind" out of the water.
God Bless Betty Bowers, God Bless Landover Baptist, and God Bless America!
Hilarious satire.......2006-08-11
Self-help, from Richard Simmons to Martha Stewart to Suze Orman, has become one of America's de facto religions, practically on par with Christianity in the twin gulags of publishing and cable tv's "paid programming." And like Christianity, it's such a big, brainless target that it's spawned many a satire. (Who can forget "Is Martha Stewart Living?" from her highness's heyday a few years back?)
"Mrs. Betty Bowers" aka "America's Best Christian" goes most such parodies one better by combining self-help with religion, making the target bigger and better. Betty isn't a new phenomenon; "she" had had a cult website for at least a couple of years when this book was published. But What Would Betty Do?, based on the website, remains fresh four years after its publication.
The book is "as told to" its real author and the architect of the website, Paul A. Bradley. What distinguishes it is Bradley's tone, a kind of dignified bitchiness that perfectly snares its target. Like a bible-thumping Joan Crawford, Betty tells readers exactly how to live and what to think, all the time making it clear that even the most devoted reader will never come up to her heavenly standard: "If God created me in His image, I have more than returned the compliment!" To Betty's mind, everybody else is a sinner. She addresses her troubled Christian correspondents pleading for a crumb of advice as "Dear Hellbound Sinner" and "Dear Sinner Who Neglects Her Christian Home for Secular Work." She's handy with tips on the proper couture for "abortion-clinic bombings" and "executions." And in her Betty-centric world, even the cherubs, those annoying little butterballs with wings, conspire to keep her on top: on the book's cover they're seen doing her (large) hair, applying perfume to her wrists, and generally slaving to keep her looking good.
Bradley's vitriolic brand of camp practically oozes off the pages. In a phrase worthy of W. C. Fields, Betty reminds us that "Children are like fresh fruit. They have no taste when they are small and new; they should be thrown out when they turn rotten." There's also a decidedly queer undertone to all this. Her gay chapter is called "What Would Betty Change? Homosexuals -- And Then Into Something Shimmering for Dinner!" The "gay agenda" as imagined by Betty is screamingly funny, a daily log with such entries as "4:10 p.m.: Time permitting, bring about the decline of Western Civilization." Like Martha, she's also seasonally minded. The reader will be pleased to know "there are only 297 shopping days till the Apocalypse." Now if only the hellfire crowd would read this book.
Sparkling Satire.......2006-03-21
Phyllis, Beverly and Dr. Laura should be proud of Mrs. Bowers' contributions to keeping God out of the hands of the undesirables (read Democrats). While I have met too many Bettys in my day, the fact that way too many people are taking her seriously demonstrates that satirical tone of this book drips more than Betty's ten carat diamond engagement ring.
Customer Reviews:
Reading the script let's the reader be a contender........2007-07-29
Of course, I saw the movie first; in fact, before VCR's and DVD's, we showed the 16 Mil. film to our regular English classes as a reward, usually at the end of the year. One year, however, I had a particularly unmotivated special ed. English class. I remembered the film, and found the book at a college bookstore. I figured it was worth a try, so I persuaded the Chairman of my department to order 15 copies out of the budget (which was usually close to empty, but somehow she ok'd the funds). At first, nobody would read ("who wants to read an old movie script anyway?"), so I began reading all the parts, and the next day I had no trouble getting them to take the parts; in fact, to avoid a slugfest, the part of Terry alternated every 10 minutes. What was it about a (at that time) 40 year old script that sparked such interest? Even though I promised to show the video when we finished reading (a bribe that usually worked), I sensed that the story of Terry's struggle to do the right thing despite the emotional and physical price he is forced to pay had struck a note. Why? Maybe because the story is so brutally stark, yet filled with a compassion that is at odds with the way Johnny Friendly and his thugs do business; it's hard to say...But this book was the basis of some of my most successful teaching. Some followed the script when I ran the movie, and a couple of kids wanted to borrow the video to watch at home, the ultimate compliment. I have to say that it has always been one of my favorite movies; with the possible exception of The Godfather, Brando was never better. But the script itself is great reading, especially aloud. It's a story that still rings true.

Customer Reviews:
Midi-schmidi.......2002-07-18
MIDI QUICK START is a 2nd grade level text; worthless, overproduced, incredibly overpriced. I wouldn't give it away, much less attempt to sell it. It's two redeeming qualities: it'll only waste ten minutes of your time--if you bother to read it cover to cover--and it doesn't take up much room in the trash can.

Customer Reviews:
Know anyone who enjoys the Times crossword?.......2007-05-02
If so, you've found the perfect gift. By chance, I read WORDS AT PLAY right after having seen the crossword puzzle documentary Wordplay. For anyone who enjoys the process of shifting, goofing, and jumbling with words, only to appreciate them again in a new light, this is a terrific volume by Oysterville native Willard Espy. (You know where Oysterville is, right?)
Making Word Work into Word Play.......2002-02-11
Often learning literary terms and how to use them can be a challenge. This book makes learning the terms both amusing and enjoyable. With a small selection to read each day of the year this book allows for easy learning everyday of the year. Espy's creative set up of the book covers everything from Acronyms to Univocalic writing. Each day with a differently constructed style and purpose this book is excellent for most age levels and can be read at any pace though it is meant to last an entire year.
A compilation of the wordmaster's masterpiece!.......1999-12-01
I have collected each of Espy's books as they have appeared; they occupy center place on my shelves of language books. The original "Almanac" and "Another Almanac" blew me away when they came out about 20+ years ago. I tried so hard to limit myself to one page a day so they would each last a year - they are almanacs, after all - but failed miserably - I remember sitting in bed with the flu and reading through both books in three days, giggling and chortling and slack-jawed with amazement the whole time.
Willard Espy is a true master - creative, erudite, knowledgeable, and howlingly funny. His Higgledy-Piddledy about Dorothy Thompson is burned into my brain for good. His ability to make the language dance is unequaled by any other writer I have read. Safire, Lederer, and Newman are articulate, yes, but not half as goofily inventive or funny, and they take themselves very much more seriously than Espy does, which is not at all. This man disproves the adage that no one is great all the time - he is.
Having said all that, I must confess that I haven't seen this Compilation - my comments are based on the absolute conviction that any compilation of brilliant material must, of necessity, be equally brilliant. I have spent the past 20 years lending out my copies of the two originals from which this volume is drawn, listening to people giggle over the cubicle walls, and plotting diabolical conseqences when they weren't returned. They are both ragged and bulging with yellow stickies - my own quick-reference system - so I can easily find and re-delight in my favorites when I need an Espyfix.
The man is gone from our midst now, so there will be no more crazy pleasure from him, and his original books are long out of print. So buy this one, I say, and prepare to laugh and be awed all at once by this explosion of sheer linquistic virtuosity.

Inventory Accuracy: People, Processes, & Technology
ASIN: 0071376003 |
Book Description
Warehousing continues to play a critical role in assuring high levels of customer service and overall logistics performance. Efficient warehousing can minimize the effects of supply chain inefficiencies; can improve logistics accuracy and inventory management; and can allow for product accumulation, consolidation, and customization. The cost of warehousing should be commensurate with the contribution of warehousing to overall logistics performance--typically between 2% and 5% of corporate revenue. In world-class warehousing these costs are minimized while also improving customer service. The principles and systems described in this book are common denominators of world-class warehousing. The principles have been developed over a decade of logistics research, education and consulting project experience. World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling can be used to develop a warehouse master plan to support the corporation's overall logistics strategy. In the second book in the Logistics Management Library, World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling will address: customization and countrification; information technology in warehousing; warehouse performance analysis; the role of the warehouse in the supply chain; warehouse expansion and contraction planning. World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling will integrate both global and e-commerce issues and examples throughout the text. The author's consulting and teaching experience places him in the position to draw on his wide experience to present numerous case studies and best practices throughout the book. In the end, this book will help the reader to develop a comprehensive warehouse strategy to reduce costs and increase quality.
Customer Reviews:
Great overview of concepts.......2004-06-20
I found the book helpful in learning some basics of warehousing. I appreciated the overview of various types of equipment and racking. The book focuses more on distribution systems but I found many of the concepts can be applied to MRO warehousing(zoning and slotting in particular)with some tweaking.
World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling.......2004-02-02
Interesting overall view for beginners in warehousing. It has a superficial treatment on very critical issues such as receiving and putaway. Also it's so focused on order picking (the author's experience) that provides an unbalanced view of Distribution Centers. It doesn't address any type of raw material warehousing insights, it focused more on finished goods distribution centers. Limited applicability of the content.
Good book on order picking methods.......2003-05-03
This book quickly covers the most common methods and equipment used to receive, move, store, pick, and ship materials within a warehouse environment. Much of the book focuses on the order-picking process, which makes it a good choice for fulfillment operations. Of particular interest is the detailed info on slotting as well as an objective discussion of the pros and cons of automation. The size of the book (only 233 pages) results in somewhat brief treatments of the various topics. On the plus side, this makes it a quick read for someone wanting to become familiar with warehouse operations, on the minus side you may find that you need to go to another resource to get more detailed info on a specific topic.
