    Book Description

Tiki bar mixology is a lost art--but the Grog Log rescues it. A twenty-page introduction traces the history of Polynesian Pop, then teaches you everything you need to know about how to make the Grog Log's eighty tropical drink recipies. Many of these recipies have never before been published anywhere--including vintage "lost" recipies by Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic, and long-gone Polynesian restaurants from the island of Manhattan to the islands of Hawaii. Profusely illustrated with vintage tiki menu graphics from the '50 and '60s, with cover art by famed Exotica artist Bosko.

I am a cocktail snob and emmersed in tiki culture and the Atomic Age. Get this fantastic tome, a bottle of Falernum and Orgeat and your bar stuff, plus my Grogalizer found on my Swank Pad site and you are making the best cocktails on earth. No one should be without this book!

5 out of 5 stars The ONLY Tiki Recipe book you'll ever need.......2005-04-18

Joe Bob Briggs from UPI called this "the best bartender's guide for tropical and rum drinks ever published". That, my friends, is an understatement. Forget those fancy and useless trendy tiki books that have to be gussied up with Shag illustrations and glossy printing, if you've already bought those: use 'em as coasters for the wonderfully entertaining and informative "Grog Log". From a pair who can navigate the tikiphyte through the Singapore Slings and arrows of the sugary crap that give tropical drinks a bad name. Easily worth 5 times the cover price, "The Grog Log" and the follow-up "Intoxica!" are the only Tiki drink books you'll ever need or want.

Alright, I'm going to keep it short and to the point. I'm a Tiki geek, I've got every book related to the subject and, along with The Book of Tiki, this book and it's sequal Intoxica are the Holy Trinity of the Tiki Religion. There is no better book on Tropical Drinks anywhere, ever. Buy it. Now.

I essentially have the same review for both this book and Berry's follow-up book, Intoxica: Jeff (Beachbum) Berry is, without question, the most learnéd authority on "tiki" beverages alive today. The cheap production characteristics of the book in no way detract from that fact, and it will be evident to both drink historians and harkeners after the tiki experience alike. Well-considered recipes, delicious and examined minutely=buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: Self Serving Review ..........2002-04-24

Aloha! I am the editor of this fine publication (and the owner of more than one completely stained, well worn copy) and wanted to throw in a quick pitch about the Grog Log's place amidst the bevy of "Trendy Tiki Drink Books of Questionable Quality".
If you are a Tiki Freak / Cocktail Enthusiast who legitimately wants to experience these classic recipes in their original, robust forms, the Grog Log is the only way to go. I sought out Jeff Berry after seeing his original self-published Grog Log five or six years ago. I was intensely facinated by these old restaurants and all of the amazingly complex creations they served. No matter how many modern (or vintage) drink books I came across none captured the true nature of these original (mostly) rum drinks (with the possible exception of some of the classics in Trader Vic's own line or the Hawaii Kai Cookbook). Jeff's self-published, xeroxed zine was the only authentic source.
We decided to team up to do an expanded mass produced version of the book to make it available to a wider (although niche) audience. Since that time (1998) the Tiki craze has exploded and more Tiki-focused drink books have been released. Don't get me wrong ... I own each of them myself ... for the most part the art, design, and production make them interesting ... but for actual recipe content they are sadly lacking. If you really want to dial up the way back machine and sip with the Masters (Trader Vic, Donn Beach, etc.) the Grog Log is for you.
NEWSFLASH: Jeff and I are just about done with a sequel to the Grog Log titled "Intoxica!" to be released in the Summer of '02. Check back often to Amazon.com as they'll be selling it once it's available. Mahalo!

    Book Description

As kitty gift books go, this is "the best, funniest, most inspiring" of them all, according to the Village Voice and tens of thousands of dedicated readers. Now out on the prowl with a new cover that's the cat's meow, it's ready to inspire a second wave of cats and their owners to relax into a catnap. Author and illustrator Alice M. Brock (of Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant" fame) counsels cat owners to approach the cat quietly with palms "up and open." Beginning at the rear, the masseur works all the way around the cat using a "vigorous kneading motion," then rubs, presses, twists, and tugs the cat into a state of complete relaxation. We are assured that a well-massaged cat may remain in a state of prolonged calm "for some time." Brock's instructions are accompanied by charming illustrations sure to inspire a mischievous chuckle in both friends and foes of felines everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, hilarious classic.......2007-07-07

I first got this book about 30 years ago, when I was a teenager. It made me laugh so hard then that it brought me to tears. Every few years I pull it out to share with someone and it STILL makes me cry with laughter. I'm sorry to find that some people have the opposite reaction. To me, it's hard to understand. I love my cat and know this book isn't meant seriously. It's a deliciously ridiculous 'how-to'. I will always love it.

2 out of 5 stars Not my thing, but others seem to like it.......2007-01-08

I didn't find this book all that funny, but then, that's just me. I'm sure any potential buyer can get the gist of what the book's about from reading these reviews, so if this sounds like it's up your alley then go for it.

I do think it's silly to claim anyone who doesn't like this book is an idiot. The images do depict an animal being hurt - certain people will never like seeing pictures of that, even if they know it's a joke. So some people are turned off by violent images in general and others don't mind as long as it's all clearly in absurd good fun - that doesn't mean one group has no sense of humor, or that those who are not bothered by the images can't enjoy the book.

My family owned this book 25 years ago and I thought it would be out of print... everyone loves it, from kids to elders.

I love my kitties. They may love me (at least they put on a good show around mealtime). We all loved this book.
    Why?
Because we have a sense of humor! It's silly, irreverant and has fantastic illustrations.
Unless you have a brain that's smaller and more simplistic than mine and my three cats' brains (a tall order, but if you read some of the other sourPUSS reviews, you will see there are even dimmer bulbs out there), you will find this book a delight!

    1 out of 5 stars Yuck.......2006-06-28

My sister and I both ran across this book yesterday, and I have to concur with her review below. So what if you know full well it's meant to be a joke? A step by step illustrated guide to choking and slowly, painfully killing a helpless animal just isn't funny. Maybe if you have a history of starting small fires and slicing up live mice in your basement, but otherwise, not so much.

3 out of 5 stars Take the information provided with a grain of salt.......2007-09-28

On the positive side, this book talks about the lean years in Buster's life, including his second marriage, that are pretty much ignored in other books on Keaton. It offers a complete filmography at the end, and talks about what has happened to Buster's extended family in the years since his death. On the negative side, the author jumps to conclusions or offers her own opinions about what happened as facts. Like everyone else, I vehemently disagree with the functional illiteracy accusation. Did Buster lack formal education? absolutely. Was he illiterate? absolutely not, based on jobs he had at MGM that involved working on scripts and his own diary which prove otherwise. Buster was interested in his craft and had no use for going over contracts and legal issues with a fine-toothed comb, a character trait that was part of his undoing for sure, but not proof he couldn't have read them had he been interested.

The specific errors that the author makes include her claiming that by the late 50's Buster didn't even remember who Dorothy Sebastian was - part of her portrait of Buster as an emotional cripple. However, about the same time, Buster wrote, along with a ghost-author "My Wonderful World of Slapstick" in which he talks about the dilemma he was in when he met his third wife Eleanor while already involved with a woman with which he had an off-and-on relationship for the previous ten years, and how he wanted to break it off with this woman to pursue Eleanor without hurting the woman's feelings. He is obviously talking about Dorothy Sebastian here, but he comes from an era in which he doesn't want to "kiss and tell" and omits her name from the book. There are other erroneous conclusions in which the author totally misinterprets certain magazine articles to claim Buster is actually complaining about this or that. The point is, take this book with a grain of salt. Entertaining it is, entirely accurate it is not.

From reading this book - and others for that matter - the person who comes across as a total mystery to me is Natalie Talmadge - Keaton's first wife. Here again, the author adds her own conclusions about Natalie's attitudes that I can't see Natalie ever conveying to anyone who would have revealed them, but the following facts are inescapible:
        a. Natalie spent a huge percentage of Buster's money on clothes she never wore and homes Buster really couldn't afford.
        b. Natalie ceased sexual relations with Buster after the birth of their second child.
        c. The effect of (a) was that Buster HAD to sign the contract with MGM in order to keep the money pouring in after his own studio closed.
        d. The effect of (b) was that Buster looked elsewhere for female companionship.
        e. The effect of (c) was that Buster became an alcoholic when he no longer had any creative control over his films and was reduced to a performer in movies he largely held in contempt.
        f. Natalie ultimately divorced Keaton because of (d) and (e) and was seethingly angry with him for the rest of her natural life, when in fact her own actions ( (a) and (b) ) contributed to the whole cycle in the first place.

In spite of this obvious chain of events, Keaton never spoke evil of his first wife, a fact that even the author of this book admits. That truly makes him a class act in my book.

        1 out of 5 stars Poor research........2007-08-01

Why did Ms. Meade write a book about someone whom she clearly dislikes?
More importantly, why did she write such a poorly researched book?
AS soon as I read that Keaton was 'illiterate' I knew that this book was not a keeper.
(Buster Keaton kept a diary when he was seven years old, and wrote screenplays when he was an adult. Any biographer can check this out.)
And any reader can purchase a much, much better biography of Buster Keaton. THE MAN WHO WOULDN'T LIE DOWN or KEATON are both superior to this one.

        3 out of 5 stars Not a good biography.......2006-06-03

This is a very detailed biography of Keaton. I don't put faith in non-fiction books that don't include bibliographies and footnotes and Meade's book has 41 pages of those so obviously she has done her research. She cites much of the info contained in the book, however, Meade makes several (almost slanderous)detailed statements about Keaton, then doesn't back them up in the notes. What really pissed me off was Meade wrongly using a known fact to exaggerate the "abuse" from his father. On page 37 she wrote how Joe Keaton "abused" Buster on the stage and 1935 X-Rays revealed cracked vertabrae to prove it then on page 145-146 she mentions the exact same 1935 X-Rays revealing the cracked vertabrae when telling the story of the stunt that went wrong that broke his neck while filming a movie years earlier. I found Meade to be somewhat of a drama queen because she exaggerates a lot of things too numerous to count. All throughout the book Meade states Keaton lied in his autobiography. I don't think he lied-he just didn't give details about some of the stories leaving me with many questions. The reason why I got Meade's book in the first place was to try and fill in the gaps. According to her notes, Keaton's widow and his children helped Meade in her research but I would like to think that reading the finished product left them very unhappy. Meade does go out of her way to show Keaton in an unflattering light. I too was very irritated by her insisting Keaton was illiterate. Since he had only 1 day of school I'm sure he didn't read or write very well but he obviously learned enough through the years to get by in life. I have read the other reviews regarding this book and I agree with them. I don't recommend anyone buy this book but if you want to read it check it out from your local library like I did and save your money.

1 out of 5 stars A total waste - save your money and time.......2006-01-19

This book is tripe, frankly. It boringly repeats a number of glaring mistakes from earlier efforts (the abused child myth to the nth degree, that alcohol and poor box office lost Keaton his independent status, that he was incapable of smiling, and so forth), and then augments these with the ridiculous assertion that Keaton was functionally illiterate. Pure nonsense! Instead of really contacting the people who know/knew Buster the best and following the leads that they could have supplied to the true story, she followed some half-baked psychological analyses, rumors, insouciant third-hand gossip and those earlier sources to arrive at a thoroughly faulty picture of the talented, humble, resilient and, on average, ultimately happy comic. Buster's real story was already available and fundamentally open to any serious author who asked for it at the time of this writing; why Meade chose to write such a miserable piece of trash is beyond me. Was she motivated by sensationalism? Does she look for the sinister in every shining story, no matter how foolish, and batter her readers with it? Who knows...

There are no great biographies of Keaton to date, although there are hopes that this may change in the not too distant future. The good information is certainly there. For a far better, if still somewhat faulty assay of his life, see the video "Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow" by Brownlow and Gill on HBO Home Video, reportedly soon to be released on DVD (Summer 2006). Don't waste your time on Meade, unless you want to read a sorry tome of blatantly false assertions and despicable fiction.

2 out of 5 stars Not Bad But Many Errors.......2004-03-12

...the most annoying perhaps eing the myth that Buster Keaton was illiterate. True he was not educated, but to say he was illiterate is false. I've seen photocopies of his journal he kept during WWI, and it's clear he studied his Army manuals and learned Morse code and practiced it. The author also makes the mistake of relaying to us conversations that took place between Buster and his mother-in-law, both deceased of course. How would she know what was said? These were about things Buster would have discussed with no one else. It's an intro to people unfamiliar with Buster, but by no means accurate. She could have skipped the hearsay about his early life "with women" as that is unfounded too.

My kids like this book, I like this book, you'll like this book. It's full of insight and strategies and written with enough wit to make it real fun. Can't recommend it highly enough.

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginners only........1999-06-09

This book would be an useful companion to beginners of the game, but it's not much use to experienced players who already know how to build large, happy cities. I was hoping to find more detailed technical information on, for example, exactly what effect various measures have on property value or crime, etc. - in short, for "charts, graphs, and numbers" - and I was utterly disappointed. This book provides hardly any more technical info than the manual, and includes much info that is redundant (e.g. every time a zone or item is described, the authors twll you how to connect it to the power grid. duh). On the positive side, it did provide me a few ideas for experimenting (especially with zones) which were fruitful. A good companion for beginners confused by the game's mechanics, but just not worth the money otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars a great SimCity beginners' reference book.......1999-05-31

This book is the second best SimCity 2000 book I've ever read, but its true value shines only in the face of a beginner. This book is one of the few that can send a point with words and pictures instead of graphs, tables, and labels that are incomprehensible to a poor beginner who hardly knows what 'SC2K' stands for. It is like a dog whistle- only the lower life forms (mainly dogs) can hear and obey it easily. This works for experience- newbies canactually understand the material. If you're an experienced player, you can still get some stuff out of it, but there are much better books with graphs, hexadecimals, tables, and the like to portray superior knowledge unnecessary for building a small, self-satisfying (if you're a beginner) city to cherish through rain and through sunshine, through thick and through thin, for richer and for poorer... anyway, it's a good book. To be brief... BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT! BUY IT NOW!

5 out of 5 stars New to Public Relations? Just buy this book first........2006-02-15

I'm starting a new company and publicity is going to be a big part of our marketing and marketing communications activities. I'm kind of process and checklist driven -- and wanted a book that would refresh me on the basics so I could put together an effective publicity plan.

Well, I just finished reading three books on the subject -- and must say Sandra's book is the best by far.

What is so impressive is how complete it is. Seriously? I've been in the advertising business for 20 years. During this time, I worked with a number of VP level clients who oversaw all of their company's communications -- so I've been around some big PR firms and seen them in action. Believe me, there are public relations firms out there charging $20,000 a month retainers that don't provide the smart and insightful counsel Sandra does. She's that good -- and she can make YOU that good.

So if you think PR is simply cranking out press release after press release after press release -- and either mailing or e-mailing it to editors everywhere with hopes that something will stick -- you will learn that is a sure-fire recipe for failure. Sandra explains the difference between working hard and working SMART -- and why the smart part of the equation separates the 1% of people who do publicity right from the 99% of people who crank out junk mail and spam.

Bottom line? If you want to learn the difference between success and failure -- such as setting goals, determining strategies, tactics to employ, and create information that will gain attention from the press instead of being deleted or thrown in the garbage -- buy this book first. It's the only one you'll need.

                      5 out of 5 stars A *real* step-by-step guide.......2006-01-25

In contrast to most books on getting media coverage, this one is a genuine step-by-step, how-to guide. It bypasses the chatty anecdotal style of many PR-professionals-turned-authors, and goes for the "dummies guide" approach.

Personal taste of course, but I much prefer this approach. A flaw of the books by "experts" is that they focus on just one or two of their pet strategies (despite what the blurb claims), while leaving holes in vital areas you need. This book truly takes you from step 1 and covers everything you need thereafter.

A particular strength is that it compares and contrasts your different choices available - a pitch letter vs. a press release; a staff-written story vs. by-lined. It really gets down to what's the right approach for a given situation.

If you want a comprehensive (but plain) how-to guide, go for this. If you want the chatty advice of an expert (with some holes in it), go for Laermer.

4 out of 5 stars Steve's Review of Complete Publicity Plans.......2005-11-22

This is an excellent book that can teach you a lot about the oft-misunderstood world of publicity. The author Sandra L. Beckwith holds nothing back as she clearly and logically lays out the plans for mounting a successful attack on the publicity campaign trail.
As anyone who has tried knows getting real publicity by simply sending out a PR (press release) is NOT ever going to guarantee an avalanche of interested traffic. Knowing exactly what to say, how to say it, and still more importantly what not to say is crucial and vital to having any real measure of success with PR people and the media at large.
This is where this book is so valuable. Sandra can help you save thousands of dollars and even potentially months and years of wasted effort by giving you a concise road map to achieving noteworthy or newsworhty publicity. I wish I had had this book when I did my first press release. The book is not quite a 5 star book but few are. I would have liked the book to have been just a bit longer with more examples but 4 stars is huge, a really great resource. Buy it at all cost.
