Customer Reviews:
The Divine Garbo.......2005-04-13
One of the reasons I love these paper dolls by Tom Tierney is that they capture the magic and star quality of Greta Garbo. The book is clearly aimed at adult customers, whether they be Garbo fans, paper doll enthusiasts or students of costume design.
As someone who fits into all three categories, I loved the portrayal of Garbo. There are three dolls showing her at different times during her career, and the first two in particular are very life-like. I also enjoyed seeing the development and growing sophistication of costume design from the silent era until the early 1940-s. The costumes from "Mata Hari" and "Camille" are especially lovely.
My only complaint is a small one. I would have liked to see more than just one costume each from two of Garbo's greatest roles: "Queen Christina" and "Anna Karenina".
MYSTERY LADY CAPTURED BY TIERNEY.......2001-11-15
OUTSTANDING COLLECTION OF COSTUMES OF THE FIRST GREAT SCREEN ACTRESS.HER EXTENSIVE SILENT FILM CAREER IS WELL REPRESENTED BY THE BEST COSTUMES BY EARLY DESIGNERS."FLESH AND THE DEVIL"COSTUME IS EXCELLENT, DOLLS ARE TERRIFIC."GRAND HOTEL" BALLARINA DRESS IS ANOTHER HIGHLIGHT. A DELIGHT FOR ANY COLLECTOR OF MOVIE MEMORABILIA.

Book Description
They are called the Bird Spirits. Each night the humans worship them and leave food as an offering. But Cutter and the Wolfriders know the Bird Spirits are not gods, or even spirits--they are real. Because the giant winged creatures attacked the tribe and carried off four of their kin to the distant spire of Blue Mountain. Now Cutter wants them back. Called "completely enthralling" by Andre Norton, the bestselling Elfquest saga has captivated fans all over the world, growing from a small independent comic into a smash hit series of beautifully illustrated, full color graphic novels. Now the adventures continue in this unforgettable new novel from the creators of the Elfquest universe, Wendy and Richard Pini.
Customer Reviews:
good, but..........2005-03-19
Of course, being an ElfQuest fan, I love pretty much everything ElfQuest, including this book, and so will you if you like ElfQuest in general.
However, this is the paperback/black and white edition-don't buy it! Warp and Marvel comics are coming out with hardback, color editions of I believe all of the ElfQuest storyline, just slightly re-organized from the last hardcover/color edition of their graphic novels that they released- heads up, don't go paying fifty bucks online for someone's used old copy! Unless you're really impatient don't go buying this! The next one to be redone in color and hardback should be #3! They've done 1 and 2!
Although it will be more expensive that way, if you're going to bother getting into something that is primarily a visual medium, why not in color as it was meant to be seen? Nothing "artistic" about this kind of B&W, it just loses.
Wow...this is good!.......2000-12-16
If you are new to the world of elfquest this is the third book in the elfquest line. Before it comes the books Fire and Flight(book #1)and the Forbbiden Grove(book #2). In this book, you meet the Gliders, a group of elves that claims to be the High Ones. You also meet the dark and evil Winnowill, a healer but one which uses her powers for hurting rather then healing.Lastly you learn the secret of the Wolfriders... I won't give away the story but I do reccomend you buy this book for its art, story and feeling...
GREAT.......1999-10-13
I thought this was one of the best books in the EQ series, and coming from me thats saying quite a bit, oh and Winnowill is a subject worth thinking about.
This Graphic Novel is the piece that has shaped my life!.......1999-09-17
ElfQuest is a wounderful series for anyone whom reads it. It is full of some of the personal expierences from Wendy and Richard Pini's own life, it contains moral lessons, it has incredible insight, a dynamic story and georgeous artwork, do not pass this book up! IT ROCKS!!!
Only one word needed here........Awesome!.......1999-07-12
This is the third book out of four collections of the original quest which are, in my opinion, works of genius!! The first book is Fire and Flight, the second - The Forbidden Grove, and the last (In my opinion, as the stuff that follows doesn't really seem like Elfquest to me) is the Quest's End. I have been reading those same four books over and over again for 15 years and I feel that they have enriched my life.

Book Description
Towns and communities across America once revolved around their downtowns. Here people shopped, worked, relaxed, and worshipped. Changing needs and developments, however, resulted in their abandonment. Over the past decade, citizens have begun to seek ways to rejuvenate their main streets. While these efforts have experienced varying levels of success, this handbook presents many of the more successful programs, providing practical and proven "how-to" insights for those communities seeking similar results for their downtowns.
The articles collected here provide an introduction to the downtown situation and its complex issues. They illustrate techniques of organization and management, describe the tools required for successful main street renewal, and provide case studies of many successful programs from across the country. This valuable tool for city planners, businesspeople, and private citizens includes a bibliography and index.

David Breskin is a fantastically talented interviewer: he has a knack for asking probing questions and the good sense to make sure his subjects answer them directly. He's assured enough not to be cowed by his famous interviewees, but humble enough to let them do most of the talking. Inner Views contains eight lengthy conversations that Breskin held with some of the most prominent modern film directors, many of them caught in the process of making their most important recent works. Francis Ford Coppola reveals the reasons for making The Godfather Part III after 16 years of refusals. Oliver Stone traces his life from his earliest memories to the making of JFK. Spike Lee, fresh from the success of Do the Right Thing, talks about the meaning of that movie and of Jungle Fever, which followed it. Robert Altman waxes eloquently on his unique filmmaking process, particularly as it relates to The Player and Short Cuts. And Clint Eastwood, caught just before the release of Unforgiven, gives a lively overview of his career. Throw in engrossing conversations with David Lynch, David Cronenberg, and Tim Burton and you have a book that provides indispensable insight into the life and work of the world's most intriguing filmmakers.
Customer Reviews:
This is one of the best books of director interviews I have ever read........2006-11-28
Breskin plainly admires the filmmakers at their best, at work and as people. He wins them into describing, with greater articulation than most, what they were thinking when they made their films and how they see art in general.
But what makes the book so worthwhile is that Breskin makes his subjects pay the piper, when they would almost certainly rather dismiss at least some of his questions with a one-liner. He is not inclined, as more "fannish" journalists would be and have been, to let them off the hook for mistakes or evasive answers.
(Revealing as well to note which of those interviewed arguably still had their best work ahead of them and which did not. The two Davids, Cronenberg and Lynch, are especially useful for this)
Breskin, we hardly knew ya..........2004-06-15
It's so very rare to be able to predict that a book, were it a publicly traded stock, is an investment certain to become more valuable over time, the antithesis of a kitten. Breskin has honed his ability to ingratiate ephemerally, and in this process, you will get a rare glimpse of these great directors actually moving outside of soundbite to let you in on some part of process. Very worth...worth.
Essential reading for film fans.......2000-03-26
Probably the best book of director interviews since HITCHCOCK/TRUFFAUT and Andrew Sarris' INTERVIEWS WITH FILM DIRECTORS. After reading it, you want David Breskin to go around interviewing every director, immersing himself in their work beforehand, leading them into intimate and challenging conversations in which they sometimes get mad at him (even the laid-back David Cronenberg gets a little prickly at one point) but develop a grudging respect for him at the same time. INNER VIEWS collects eight interviews Breskin conducted for ROLLING STONE -- yes, children, there was a time when that magazine was worth reading -- though the pieces were significantly shortened for publication in RS, and thankfully restored to full sprawl here. I have no idea why we haven't seen more from Breskin; is he dead or retired? An interviewer this penetrating and eloquent shouldn't be allowed to ride off into the sunset.
I would be duty-bound to cherish this book simply because Breskin sits down with two of my gods, David Cronenberg and David Lynch; between their interviews here and the respective books about them edited by Chris Rodley, you will discover all you could ever want to know about these fascinating directors. But Breskin also interviews six other greats: Robert Altman, Oliver Stone, Francis Ford Coppola, Spike Lee, Tim Burton, and (in the expanded 1997 edition) Clint Eastwood. He parries amusingly with a few of them, as when Oliver Stone -- intellectual macho man that he is -- smugly breaks out a quote from Aeschylus, only to be informed by the unimpressed Breskin that Coppola had already related that same quote to him. (Stone is described as "surprised, his thunder stolen.") Breskin also gets yelled at a few times by accomplished shouter Spike Lee (this was before he became a father and mellowed) but admirably, calmly stands his ground -- yet Lee comes off not as a hothead throwing a diva tantrum but as an impassioned man who isn't used to being challenged by an interviewer from ROLLING STONE. Lee, and everyone else in the hot seat here, would discover that Breskin was much more than that.

Great Concertos For The Cello.......2003-08-30
Three great cello concertos are included in this edition, with perhaps the Dvorak concerto being the best ever written for the instrument.
Dover's edition is put together well. Clear printing, score lays flat, and once again, how can you beat the price? Recommended for anyone that loves these concertos and wants to learn more about them.

Book Description
Although Dvorák's cello concerto is enormously popular, no extended study of it has been undertaken hitherto. This book is a comprehensive study intended for concertgoers and students of this well-loved work. It considers aspects of historical background, form, virtuosity, performance and the concerto's rich personal content. This guide sees the work as a crucial means of exploring the composer's emotional life and links it intimately to the woman who was probably his first love.
Download Description
Dvor·k's Cello Concerto, composed during his second stay in America, is one of the most popular works in the orchestral repertoire. This guide explores Dvor·k's reasons for composing a concerto for an instrument which he at one time considered unsuitable for solo work, its relationship to his American period compositions and how it forms something of a bridge with his operatic interests. A particular focus is the concerto's unique qualities: why it stands apart in terms of form, melodic character and texture from the rest of Dvor·k's orchestral music. The role of the dedicatee of the work, Hanus Wihan, in its creation is also considered, as are performing traditions as they have developed in the twentieth century. In addition the guide explores the extraordinary emotional background to the work which links it intimately to the woman who was probably Dvor·k's first love.

Ever wonder what qualifications some strategy guide authors have and what makes them such authorities on the game in question? When it comes to Falcon 4, the long-awaited and generally heralded F-16 jet combat simulation, Prima decided it was best to bring in some big guns. Peter Bonanni and James Reiner are both F-16 instructor pilots and graduates of the F-16 Fighter Weapons School. They also consulted on the development of the game, so it's safe to say that when these guys talk dogfighting tactics, they know what they're talking about. Still, this is the sort of book that is probably best suited for hardcore flight sim enthusiasts (which, come to think of it, is pretty much the demographic matching Falcon 4 players...). Beginning with some basics on the game and the various gameplay options, the book gives readers a quick and dirty guide to instant action missions, multiplayer dogfights, and full-fledged campaigns. After that, this guide is all business--I mean, any book that devotes separate chapters to laser-guided bombs and the AGM-65 Maverick missile is a hardcore title indeed. Studying the wealth of information in this guide, Falcon 4 pilots should be able to improve their skills in a hurry. In fact, after going through this manual a few times, you might just feel ready to take a real F-16 out for a spin...
Book Description
In-depth strategy, tactics, and info straight from members of the development team and not available in the game manual
How to get maximum performance from your Falcon
Basic fighter manuevers, including positional, attack, and intercept geometry
All about Falcon avionics and weapons systems
Detailed diagrams that illustrate military flight concepts
Advice from real Air Force F-16 pilots
Customer Reviews:
You can't fly Falcon 4.0 without this book.......1999-10-29
The Falcon 4.0 Simulator (*not* a game) is a very good facsimile of an F-16 and its operating environment. The sim manual is very comprehensive and very good, but this book should be required reading if you want to further your air-to-air and air-to-ground skills and compete in the campaigns, especially if you fly multi-player. I reference this book and review the tactical concepts constantly.
Of particular importance are the anecdotes, or personal *real-life* stories that Pete presents at the head of each section. These are more than just "war" stories, they are stories with an important lesson to be learned, and they apply to the *virtual-life* experiences that you'll have in the sim. If you fly Falcon 4.0, you need this book.
Falcon Freak.......1999-08-23
5 stars eh? yeah the book deserves more than five if you ask me.If you thought that manual was huge this would look very thin in front of it but boy o boy it sure have a punch in it.What can i say more it really improved my games and now i am enjoying the game more and more Thanx Peter And James for such an excellent book
A Complete package.......1999-02-04
Written by Pete "BOOMER" Bonanni and Jamie "LINUS" Reiner, 2 actual F-16 pilots gives this book an even more authentic feel and there true experiences they share with the reader sure give you an idea of the tough job a Viper pilot has. The book is well thought out with 25 chapters and 7 appendix's devoted to all areas of the sim. It will surely add to your enjoyment of Falcon 4.0 ORDER IT NOW!!!
This book.......1999-01-09
This book has helped me so much on Falcon 4,science it is A VERY COMPLICATED SIM!

What a help.......2007-05-08
This book was truly a great help. I needed some ideas for the designs of my monthly newsletter. I am not a creative guy so this book was very helpful!
This is the first email book you should buy.......2005-11-06
I don't normally write these things - but I feel like I owe something to the author. I bought this book and another (also on newsletter marketing) - and while I'm not crazy about the second one, I can tell you that I read this book with my yellow marker out. You might go a couple of pages before underscoring something - but then you'll come upon a page (and this is frequently, mind you) where the book pays for itself over and over. Also, if you're in the mode to buy this book, one of the best books I've ever read (on sales/marketing/the science behind it) was written by Paco Underhill and called "Why We Buy." Anyway, you should probably also know two things (about the book "Sign Me Up"): 1) It doesn't have that "get rich quick feel" that some other books in this vein have (thank goodness) and 2) as I write this (Nov '05) this book is current - as opposed to picking up one of the Guerrilla books that doesn't mention the internet because it didn't exist when the book was written). Anyway, great book, you should buy it and cross "newsletter books" off your list.
I Signed Up for this Book - Must have for E-Marketing.......2005-10-10
This is an outstanding book on permission based e-mail. Anyone considering doing or who is doing a newsletter should consider getting this book. It contains excellent insight and ideas on how to execute and improve an email newsletter program. The Team at Return Path has valuable expertise and experience in optimizing e-mail strategy and tactics.
One of the keys to a successful program is Relevance, Relevance, and Relevance. If you provide something useful or interesting to a client or customer they will give you permission to send regular communications. By its nature e-mail allows for personalization, customization, and targeted marketing. This is a great opportunity to build a relationship and better communicate to the needs of any client or customer base. Personalized product and content recommendations are what people are interested in.
If you are looking for a way to add value to your marketing efforts, this book will help with the ingredients to create, launch, and sustain an e-mail newsletter strategy and campaign. The book gets into content, list, and optimization strategies. The team at Return Path covers topics like:
1. Creating E-mail that People Want to Read
2. Writing and Managing an Email Newsletter Program
3. Designing and Formatting Emails for Maximum Performance
4. Building a Large and Responsive E-mail List
5. Keeping Your List Clean and Well-Maintained
6. The Importance of Testing
7. Make Sure Your Message Reaches the Inbox
8. CAN-SPAM and Other Email Legislation
The books covers tidbits of information like, "Research has found that newsletters with several short stories typically get read more than emails with one long story." Another good quote is, "People will gladly accept advertising in exchange for information and entertainment, so the creation of a content-filled email newsletter is the best strategy to deliver your advertising message to your audience with success"
As someone who works in the direct marketing industy, I highly recommend this book to anyone in the advertising and marketing industry. As a friend of someone who has MS I appreciate the fact that 10% of the purchase price of this book is donated to The Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis.

A book review by Susan E. Fisher
Permission marketing is just what it says it is. It's marketing centered around customer consent. You secure permission from your customer and prospective customers to market your products and services to them. Permission is a covenant: As long as you give customers something they want, mainly information they find valuable, they will accept your marketing messages.
The advantages to a system built upon mutuality are obvious. You actually manage to get the ear, and hopefully the mindshare, of customers who are bombarded daily with hundreds of both stealthily subtle and blaringly blatant marketing messages.
The disadvantages are equally obvious: How do you gain consent? How do you get your customers to not only say "Okay, fine," but to exclaim "Sign me up!"? Once you gain permission, how do you keep it? How do you build a strong relationship through these communications, rather than end up as an annoyance and be perceived as one more interruption in a busy day?
Here's a simple answer that should be considered the golden rule of e-marketing: "Create Email That People Love to Read." "Content is king: If recipients don't read your email, it has no chance of building your business, and no one will read it unless the content is relevant and interesting to them."
That's "Rule #4" in "Sign Me Up!: A Marketer's Guide to Creating Email Newsletters that Build Relationships and Boost Sales." Written by a team from email services firm Return Path, "Sign Me Up!" addresses those basic e-newsletter development questions in a practical way. It offers a primer on:
1. content strategy (really the basics on how to write and design a newsletter, rather than tie newsletter content into a greater marketing communications or sales strategy)
2. list strategy (how to build a very basic list; there's not much on list segmentation - which we at BeTuitive Marketing find critical)
3. optimization strategies (how to improve response and measure how the email program is working in a very general way.)
The points are reinforced by examples from Kimberly-Clark, eBay and other companies with well-known brands.
One of the best features of the book is that it clearly states points that should be obvious but, from our experience, unfortunately aren't. For example, here is advice about email customer service that we also emphasize to our customers.
* "Have a real, live person monitor all incoming mail."
* "Don't tell your customers not to reply to the messages you send."
* "Ask for feedback."
* "Handle spam complaints the right way."
Quite frankly, as the editorial director at BeTuitive Marketing -- which creates email newsletters to build relationships and build sales -- I found little new in the book. It did not break any new ground or offer any insight particular to B2B marketing, which is a slightly different animal than B2C communications. Most importantly, experience tells me that a 164-page book can only scratch the surface of the exacting and sometimes grueling - but always rewarding -- effort it takes to get an email newsletter off the ground and to keep it high flying, so customers get what they want to hear along with what you want to tell them.
Nonetheless, the book and its helpful glossary offer a solid introduction for email newsletter novices and a helpful re-introduction to the process for businesses that have tried email newsletter campaigns and ended up with less-than-stellar results. At $6 for a pdf version (and $17.95 for a trade paperback), it's worth the download or the dollars for the paperback. Plus, the authors promise to donate 10 percent of the purchase price to the nonprofit The Accelerated Cure Project for Multiple Sclerosis. A Must-Read for Anyone Involved in Email Marketing.......2005-03-07
I read this book because our company has been disappointed with the results from our email marketing efforts to date. Unlike many business books out there that can seem generic and "fluffy," I was very pleased to discover detailed recommendations and examples of best practices throughout the book on key topics such as building our list, crafting our content, and ensuring that our email is being viewed by our customers. The book gave us specific and actionable recommendations for how to improve our results, and we are already beginning to see the improvements! I recommend this book to anyone involved in email marketing.
