Book Description

Dutch designer and printmaker Hendrik Werkman (1882–1945) is best known for his innovative printing techniques and avant-garde typography. As publisher of De Blauwe Schuitt, a series of underground booklets produced by Jewish dissident poets and writers during the Nazi occupation of Holland, Werkman was imprisoned by German secret police in 1945 and executed without trial just three days before the country’s liberation. This generously illustrated book is the first in English to focus on Werkman’s remarkable graphic work and fascinating life.

Werkman founded his own printmaking shop in 1908. His self-produced magazine The Next Call was published in 1923 and included typographical and other printmaking experiments as well as the designer’s own Dadaist poems and texts. Werkman also developed a printmaking process he called “hot printing,” a technique incorporating found materials that added repeated design elements directly onto the paper—all without the use of a printing press. Although much of his work was destroyed at the time of his execution, the remarkable examples that remain tell the story of a maverick designer and typographer whose graphic vision was playful, bold, experimental, and unwaveringly optimistic.

CUT DOWN TO SIZE.......2007-04-30

Hikaru has refused to play against Akira Toya but he has joined the Haze Middle School Go Club. Akira joins the Kaio Middle School Club in hopes that the two will meet in one of the periodic school tournaments. Of course, Akira is a million lightyears ahead of anyone on the Kaio team when it comes to Go. While some players on his team admire his skill and want to learn from him, his arrival has thrown the hierarchy of the team into chaos, and has made some feel a great deal of resentment towards him. Three of the members plan to knock him off his pedestal in a dishonest scheme to shame him. Meanwhile, Hikaru's team might not be able to enter the upcoming tournament if they can't find a third player. They post an extremely difficult Go problem on the school bulletin board, thinking that whoever solves it could be their next prospect. A kid named Yuki Mitani solves it but unfortunately he sees Go only as a method of making money on games he bets with gullible old timers. In addition, he has a fondness for cheating. Will Hikaru and Sai be able to reform him and add him to the Haze Go Club?

I'm not going to lie and say that my knowledge of how to play Go or understand all the strategies involved has improved after 3 volumes, but that doesn't even really matter when reading this manga. Obata's art and Hotta's writing convey the suspense in each game and the emotional content without the reader having to understand each and every move. I'll probably never pick up a Go tile myself but I still really enjoy this manga. Maybe it's because the characters invest so much passion and honor in the game they play? Or maybe it's seeing them try to improve their skills to where they're worthy of calling each other equals? A good read even if you have no interest in the game itself.

Great fourth book!.......2005-07-07

Well I have read the 1-3 books in he series hikaru no go and I have found them to all be great! Then one day I picked up the fourth in the series and started reading it and it was AMAZING! Hikaru is at a go tournament and he gets bored so he decides to go walk around and he sees someone playing go on the computer (which you can actually do). He finds it very interesting and so he wants to play it too, but there is one problem...he doesnt have a computer. So he goes to Yuki's sister's computer almost everyday to play go. He makes a username called Sai and becomes a very well known player on the inernet and everyone wants to play him. Nobody knows who he really is and thinks that he is a pro. Akira hears about this and he makes a username to play against Hikaru. Akira resigns because he can right away tell that it is Hikaru. Now Akira is then the only person who knows who the username Sai is. This manga is a very good page turner that I loved. Hikaru no go is one of my favorite series and I think that everyone that likes good manga should read it!

Book for Beginner crossing into Intermediate level.......2004-05-04

I was expecting this to be a child's classical book because of the kid on the cover and the word "Easy" in the title. What I got was a book at a different level than the one visually suggested on the cover. But that's okay. I needed music a bit more challenging than what I had in my beginner's arsenal. I accepted the fact that this wasn't what I expected. It's actually better. I am at the beginner-crossover into intermediate level, which means I'm not ready for books that say "intermediate" but "beginner" is way too easy. I brought this book to my piano teacher who liked it. As she played some of the selections from the book I recognized songs I knew and liked. Anyhow I have been using this book and it's challenging for me but I like the music in it so it's motivation to finish a piece to move on to another. It had a pretty decent selection. The Table of Contents wasn't listed on Amazon so I'll tell you what's inside:

Nice book for those of us who didn't attend Cal Tech or MIT.......2007-08-07

There are lots of books out there that are just too much work for the beginner. Sklansky is brilliant but I can't wade through his books or most of the 2+2 library just yet. That's a criticism of me not them.

Lots of other books attempt to describe hands in prose or through some kind of diagram. These books by Purdy provide a very clear way of illustrating and narrating a poker scenario so that it has the feel of being at the table. The situations can be read one at a time. Each stuation and analysis taking perhaps five minutes or so to read through.

Since 95% of the book consists of the 150 situations, don't buy this book unless you are willing to actively engage in thinking them through as presented. This is not a book to just sit back and read on autopilot. You have to "play" the hands. You might think of it as 5 hours of play at the casino poker room.

The books by Purdy have helped me the most in starting out. And who knows, after reading them, I may just be ready for some Sklansky.

I'm between Beginner and Intermediate, and this book works great for me. Illustrations help reders to understand situations very clearly. With this book I feel as if I were at a card table with a great mentor.

Great beginners book.......2006-07-15

Following the success of the limit version of this book the author has moved into the arena of the very popular no limit Hold'em game. Unlike most of the books out there this one breaks everything down into illustrated scenarios which include the important factors of position, pot size, action, and other useful information upon which decisions should be based. The reader can visualize the exact scenario and then read the correct course of action. By providing over 150 scenarios some of which are multiple parts of the same hand the reader is guided through a number of thought processes that are essential for any winning poker player.

A beginner is exposed to ideas they may never have considered such as the importance of position, how to figure pot odds, the consideration of prior action in the hand, theoretical hand strength, maximizing profit from a winning hand, and much more.

Some of the concepts will be old news to an advanced player, but to new and intermediate players it drives home some very important advice covering real life and internet games. By using illustrations with every hand the concepts are easy to grasp and remember. It is a book that can be read a little at a time and is very easily absorbed.

There are better books out there.......2006-06-21

I was not a fan of this book. It contains a lot of errors - like how to look like you are going to bet by holding your chips when describing an Internet tournament scenario! Of the 150 scenarios, one includes making a Royal Flush and another involves flopping quads. Sure, they happen, but I've been playing online for more than six years, and I've made one Royal. Are there people playing on the Internet as dumb as the opponents described in this book? Sure. But the overall message I took away from this book is, "Don't gamble unless you have the absolute nuts." Good luck on that. Find a better use for your money.

I had the pleasure of sitting in on one of Roberta's seminars and meeting this very lovely woman. This book gives you some good tips and trick on how to deal with people that you may find difficult.

Excellent Resource!!.......2005-06-13

This book is so chock full of info on dealing with difficult people. It goes beyond the obvious and gets to the root causes of the actions some people take, and how you can best combat them. I would recommend this book for anyone. Not just business persons, but anyone dealing with the public. It can even help with interpersonal relationships.
