Barry Moser, despite his tendency to sound like a Baptist preacher and his abysmal table manners, is a virtuoso close to our hearts. He is best known as an artist who works with books, and more specifically with the texts he loves. He has illustrated legions of children's books, adult books and poetry collections. And as works of art they have been embraced by children, adults and librarians for over three decades. But he started life as a modest lad, learning letterpress and how type should look on the page, engraving the end-grain of boxwood (when it could still be obtained) and perfecting the art of watercolor to the point where he could illuminate anything from the words of Br'er Rabbit to the poetry of Donald Hall and Richard Wilbur. In The Face of Presumptions by the acclaimed american artist and illustrator Barry Moser presents one of those rare instances whereby a highly and widely regarded artist shares the inner thoughts and awareness that in turn, inspire visual and literary concepts. Each chapter reveals the necessary acumen and grit of daily living transformed into meaningful and fully accesible paragraphs of language, which in turn engage the reader allowing us to see the bigger picture through the eyes of an artist.

It doesn't matter if you're male or female, you can relate to the characters...even if the situation is so bizarre that it's totally unbelievable! A girl stuck on a guy's right hand? Naughty jokes aside, HUH? you say, but forget that, and just sit back and enjoy.
In this novel, to earn some extra money, Midori and Seiji join an all-woman's wrestling contest, with Seiji in drag, with predicable results. Then, Shuichi has the twisted duo working a doll-con, where Seiji shows some of his allegience to his "partner," and then Midori feels threatened when an old crush of Seiji's shows up, with unexpected results, then a couple of dates and a robot interfere in their lives. Finally, to really charge up the tension, Kota forces a confrontation with Seiji regarding Midori's continued existence as a part of his body...with very emotional tugs at the heart of the reader.

Even though the tame fanservice in this title was left uncensored in earlier volumes of this 8 volume series, Viz has censored volume 7 to cover up an exposed breast and nipple in two panels on page 130. The original had Midori freaking out over Lucy's exposed nipple, in Viz's censored version the bra has been redrawn to cover the nipple. This severly alters the humor of this scene.
Shame on Viz.
Cute and Hilarious.......2006-04-12
From its description, this manga sounds like it would be totally perverted. It's not. I read about "Midori Days" in a magazine and was immediately turned off by the idea of a guy having a girl for a right hand. I finally ended up reading it, and I was very pleasantly surprised. The manga-ka does not take the obvious path and write a manga all about fan-service.
"Midori Days" is above-standard in humor. I always get lots of laughs out of every volume. The best part is all the love triangles. There are sexual jokes, but they're pretty mild. Still I wouldn't suggest it to anyone under 13.
There are a lot of sweet moments too, with Midori learning to be more outgoing and Soji to be more sensitive to Midori's feelings. The two have a good chemistry together, and the romance is very rewarding.
Overall, I highly suggest this manga. It will keep you entertained with the humor and romance. It's unique, out-there, and it's one of the best I've read in a while.
Comedy with a dash of romance? .......2005-11-08
Would you call it romance? I think this manga is aimed at guys, however, it seems that a relationship will develop...
Story: Basically a tough guy ends up with his hand turned into a girl, a REAL girl that used to be in his school, until she went into a coma. She's always had a crush on him, and now she's part of him!
Okay, that's actually just the opening, and a strange one it is. The whole manga though, is enveloped in comedy and drama (mostly comedy, but hints of future romance). There is a bit of fanservice; Midori, (hand) girl on cover, her bare chest is exposed to the reader. This only happens like twice, and not in any nasty way...more like a Love Hina way.
If the small flash of fanservice scares you away (girls), don't let it. I'm a girl and enjoyed this regardless of that.I can't wait to get the next volume, and you should try it too!

Laugh out loud!.......2003-07-07
Any book that can make me laugh is worth a minimum of three stars. Don McTavish uses up 165 paperback pages to give a humorous glimpse into various forms of trucking, from his early days as a teenage yard boy, through to obtaining his driving licence, oil patch work, logging and high-mile hauling. Any trucker can relate to the stories and any enthusiast or persons seaking a career change and considering entering the industry will gain some useful advice and insight and plenty of laughs along the way.
Although the cover depicts a Mack, much of Dan's material involves transport in the sixties and beyond, much of it spent in Kenworths, including team driving a 1960 cabover KW with twin gearboxes.
For some old-school trucking fun, nostalgia, and a mix of diverse characters and experiences, this book is a gem.

This book gives a lot of information about Ewan McGregor. It has detailed info on where he was born, his relatives, and what he felt about every movie or tv show he made. The pictures are also fabulous! If you're an Ewan fan, you should definitely get this book.

I think it is a great book with very hot pictures of Ewan, but it need a little more info on him But it does have a lot of interesting and useful info, with a couple funny stories and some quotes.Lots of good pictures that arent anywhere else. A great book for the Ewan fan.

Do not underestimate this text! It is quite good........2003-01-22
"Masters of Instrumental Blues Guitar" by D. Garwood is an oft-overlooked but nonetheless significant instruction book aimed at the novice fingerstyle guitarist who is interested in learning to play real country blues fingerstyle guitar. It lacks the glossy pizzazz of newer instruction materials, but it truly delivers the goods in terms of solid guitar-learning knowledge.
When this book first came out it was one of only two available study resources for this style of playing (the other being Happy Traum's book). Now of course there are literally thousands of instruction resources available. And yet I always think of this book first when someone asks me how to learn to play fingerstyle country blues. The reason is that Mr. Garwood the author chose an excellent method: He presents and explains this music in terms of the two most common bass line structures in country blues guitar (alternating bass lines and so-called "monotonic" bass lines common to Delta and Texas playing) and then he teaches these concepts by teaching non-simplified arrangements of many songs originally recorded by two of the classic practitioners of these methods: Mississippi John Hurt of Avalon MS, and Mance Lipscomb of Navasota, TX. As it turns out, the guitar music of these two players is both top-notch deep country blues and has arrangements that are actually accessible to the novice player. The end result is that, upon completing the learning of tunes in this manual, the student is able to play an excellent variety of legitimate country blues tunes in a variety of styles. More importantly, Mr. Garwood's approach to organizing this guitar knowledge serves as an excellent basis for further study. By that I mean specifically that his method of explaining these arrangements in terms of (i) bass line structures and (ii) free-form melody structures going over those bass lines, ... is a great way to approach ANY fingerstyle arrangement of ANY tune.
The book has some excellent photos, and the simple, almost crude text layouts have a great retro feel to them. There are also examples of signature tunes by other seminal players like Rev. Gary Davis and John Fahey. The tablature used in this book is as easy to read as TAB gets, particularly for non-music-readers. Lastly, the music of John Hurt and Mance Lipscomb and Gary Gavis etc. is just plain wonderful stuff ... music that is fun to know and play over ones' lifetime.
Obviously this book provided me with a lot of useful info in my music life, and even though it's out of print at this time I strongly advise the reader to grab an available copy if at all possible ... a nice addition to a fingerstyle guitar learning library.

This is the best bookkeeping book I've stumbled upon. It is organized well, meaning the order of chapters follows a layperson's logic and prepares them well for the task ahead.
Not for beginners.......2004-07-30
I wanted "Bookeeping made simple" or "booking made easy" but both titles were out at every store I tried.
So I got tis one instead on Tuesday, knowing Monday I start a new job as an assistant bookkeeper with no accounting experience.
This is not for beginners! I have had no experience with accounting terms so ever other page makes me consult my finacee's accounting 101 textbook.
The chapters barely explain anything, then you have complicated problems at the end. And they're very hard, I end up cheating off the answer key to save my own ego.
This might help if you use it for its original purpose: if at the midterm exam of a bookkeeping class you realize you're failing, pick this up and use it to help.
But if you're a beginner, look for the two titles I mentioned above. I found them at the library and they are saving my butt!
Learn it before using Software like Quickbooks........2004-07-01
I am completely new to accounting and bookkeeping. I wanted a book I could teach myself the basics before using software. I went to my local Borders and found this book was the only one that actually made you DO exercises to make sure you understood what you were learning. So far this book has been great. Accounting terms and concepts can be confusing for normal people like me (chemist) but this book does a great job making you understand by doing and not just reading. There are a few mistakes in the answer section but the book teaches me well enough for me to realize that they are mistakes. Enough said.
Maybe for the student.......2004-05-05
At best: A simple, clear, student workbook.
At worst: Lame, out of date, historical documentary.
All excercises are hand written and methods do not include any mention of computers, email, spreadsheets, or other standard parts of any modern business. A great way to bore any student to tears, but unreadable for a small business that needs to get the job done quickly.
Good Basic Understanding.......2003-01-15
When I was trying to find a bookkeeping book it was hard to sort through the many choices offered on Amazon.com. If you are like me and want to get a basic understanding of bookkeeping with a chance to practice then this one will work for you as it provides all of the basics necessary to understand double entry bookkeeping. I had accounting in college many years ago but never really understood bookkeeping. This text walks you through the subject from the ground up. Presented in short lessons with lots of practice exercises it is practical, and well presented. The book has been updated (1999) but it was clearly originally written long ago (the original copyright is 1983) so be prepared to feel as though you are in the 70's as you do the exercises. There are several errors (which begin appearing in Chapter 10) where the answer key does not match even the original data provided in the problem but if you know this (another reviewer had mentioned this when I was researching this book and that was very helpful to know ahead of time) then even their mistakes can be used to keep you on your toes and enhance your learning by trying to discover where the errors are! (The errors aren't so gross that it interfered with my understanding of the material.)
Even though you may never actually do bookkeeping using hand written entries and journals and ledgers as the exercises in the book ask you to do, the understanding of how this all works can help with knowing what is going on behind the scenes in Quickbooks or other accounting software. My only caveat may be that if you don't have any business experience whatsoever, it might not be substantial enough. I would still get this book and then supplement it with other general business books. A great companion whose first 5 chapters mesh well with this book and which then takes you beyond bookkeeping into accounting is The McGraw-Hill 36-Hour Accounting Course, Third Edition. The focus of Bookkeeping The Easy Way is small business and the McGraw-Hill book is corporate focused.
