Digital networking, such as on the World Wide Web, makes our global cultural heritage accessible to an ever-widening audience. To reach this audience and ensure researchers can find the information they seek, consistent terminology for the language used in information retrieval contexts is
essential. Introduction to Vocabularies explains, demonstrates, and advocates the use of controlled vocabularies in describing, cataloging, and documenting cultural heritage information.

Book Description
Celebrating the Italian Genius in fashion and design, each volume is devoted to a prestigious leader of Italian Creativity in couture, their design philosophy, style and products. The names that have become synonymous with glamour, celebrity, and star quality from the fifties to this day are the subjects of this collection.
Fashion in the late twentieth century has assumed its rightful place as an art form. It is not surprising that Versace originally studied architecture and Ferre has been called the Frank Lloyd Wright of Italian fashion. Couture is now a staple of many museum collections and at the the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York it has become one of the most popular targets for its throngs of visitors. The books in this series have been produced with the cooperation of the design companies. Each volume contains an incisive text covering the organization's history, creations, their materials, and accessories.

Great Read for Fans of JSA.......2007-01-06
Having grown up on Superman and Batman I have enjoyed the guest appearance of some of the older supers. Jay Garrett as older Flash always a favorite so with the re invention of some of these Golden Age heroes it has really been a treat. Now that they have their own story lines it is great to see a little more background and adventures plus Sandman is always a blast.
The Golden Age Strikes Again!.......2003-12-27
For anyone who's a fan of 1) The "Golden Age" of DC Comics; 2) Great team books; 3) Compelling superheroes; or 4) Old-fashioned comic book grandeur, you can't do much better than The Justice Society Returns!
I picked it up not knowing worlds about the golden age: Of course I knew Wonder Woman (although this is actually the current WW's mother, Hippolyta), and I knew the Spectre, the Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman, but for the most part, these were new characters to me. And honestly, there's not a soft one in the bunch. Robinson - along with comic greats like Mark Waid and Geoff Johns - puts a very modern spin on a tale that sees the original JSA battling a demon bent on stopping war by eliminating all life on Earth. The story follows the traditional golden age JSA formula: the team confronts the problem as a unit, they break up and fight on their own or in small teams - and they reunite at the end to fight the menace together.
Overall, the whole thing is really effective. The writing is top-notch, as each character gets some time to shine (especially Hourman and the Atom). The art is also fantastic, often taking a realistic approach for serious settings and topics like WWII and branching into a more cartoonish look when dealing with a throwback like Starman. There are just enough nods to the era (it's set circa 1944) blended with a modern feel (mainly in the smooth lines and dynamic action of the art) to make it seem both nostalgic and relevant (see specifically the chapter that sees the Flash and Mr. Terrific trying to prevent the firebombing of innocent civilians in Dresden). It makes cornball heroes like the Star-Spangled Kid seem legit and just makes comics in general seem colorful and fun again. Really, any age will enjoy the stories here, and it's all an excellent introduction to the (still relatively) new JSA ongoing series DC started in 2000.
If you like this collection, you should also take a look at:
*The new JSA series (vols. 1-5) by Geoff Johns & David Goyer, among others.
*"Dr. Mid-Nite" by Matt Wagner & John K. Snyder III
*"The Spectre: Crimes & Punishments" by Ostrander & Mandrake
*"All-Star Comics Archives, Vol. 1"

Entertaining and informative and well written.......2003-10-24
As is usual with many biographies, the genesis of a life is often much more interesting than its (generally successful) conclusion. The child is father of the man as Willie Wordsworth once wrote, and Mr Pressburger was true to his origins til the day he died. Hungarian Jew subject to the nightmare experienced by millions of fellow Europeans, he was a talented and richly cultured individual who very much made the most of his many talents, including an eye for the "girls". This is an interesting and well written biography which will appeal to those interested in cinema, European history, writing, and for those of you so inclined, the toings and froings of many of cinema's greats who were part of the cinema partnership of Mr Michael Powell, and Mr Pressburger. It also inspires one to have a relook at their wonderful films such as The 49th Parallel, The Red Shoes, I Know Where I'm Going, Black Narcissus and provides an understanding into the nature of "composed films".
A Grandson's search for his grandfather.......1996-06-11
Emeric Pressburger was a fascinating man. A Hungarian Jew
exiled during WWII he came to England and (together with
Michael Powell) made some of the most fascinating and
influential movies of the period.
This is the story of how Kevin MacDonald followed his
Grandfather's path through Europe and how and why a
non-native speaker could finish up being one of the
best observers of the English.
Emeric Pressburger often showed a deep understanding of
the British that is only granted to those "outside, looking
in". He always prided himself on being "more English than
the English". After all, some of use were just BORN English,
but he CHOSE to become English.

Book Description
For which album were the songs "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" originally intended? What was the original title of the album eventually released as Abbey Road ? Which instruments were played by the Fab Four during the recording of "She's Leaving Home"? These are just some of the almost 1,000 questions included in Who Was Eleanor Rigby... Organized year-by-year in chronological chapters, the book includes questions covering all facets of the band from Liverpool, and is a surefire hit with all their fans.
More than 25 years after their break-up, the Beatles are once again the hottest act in music. The recent documentary on the band was one of the biggest television events of the year, and the two Anthology double-CDs soared to the top of the charts. .
Incidentally, the answers to the questions above are: (1) Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, (2) Everest and (3) none -- a group of string musicians handled all the playing. As for the book's title, Eleanor Rigby was a name on a tombstone found by Paul McCartney.
Customer Reviews:
The Worst Beatle Book Ever.......2004-04-13
Pointless rehash of information that's been around for years.
Maybe I'm biased.......2001-06-24
Maybe I'm biased because I am a contributor to this book, but I found it highly entertaining and informational. Oh, and by the way, Eleanor Rigby's grave wasn't found by Paul McCartney until sometime in the 1980s. Eleanor Rigby is really a combination of Eleanor Bron (an actress in "Help!") and Rigby's stores found all over England.
Very fun!.......2000-05-13
This book is very good. It is divided in various chapters, each one talking about one disc or year. There are short trivia questions, some are "true or false", others have complete answers. They are divided by numbers (there are 909 questions) and in the end of each chapter there are the answers. There is a nice introduction and in the end, a bibliography (useful for those who want o go deeper into the trivia). I bought it on a trip to New York, and althought I had read about it on Amazon.com, I would have bought it either I hadn't, because its backcover has attractive questions that incite you to buy it. It's a narrow and small book (not a pocketbook, taller), a typical paperback.
what a great book! Amazing, random info..........1999-12-29
I have no idea how the author went about researching this book, but the end result is such enjoyable, and interesting reading. Very quick and interesting reading for a fun night with friends(who are interested in the Beatles) or when you only have a few minutes to read some quick interesting tid-bits.
My review of Who was Eleanor Rigby? And 908 other questio..........1998-01-06
Gear book. I liked it because it had questions I knew the answers to immediatley, ones I had to think about and ones I didn't know at all, so I learned quite a bit about the Beatles from reaing this book. I had a groovy time goin' through and tryin' t' figure out th' answers before I 'ad t' look them up. I'd recommend reading it wether you're a HUGE Beatles fan with a ton of knowlege, or just a novice who's looking to learn more about the GREATEST ROCK GROUP OF ALL TIME.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Breadth but Has a bit of Overkill.......2007-03-18
This is a very well done work. This book is not that big, but the breath it covers is pretty amazing.
That being said, there are times he goes pretty far overboard. He has a section about tents you can make and he talks a little being a boy scout in the 50's. This section may have had relevance then, but it doesn't now, so don't include it.
A good counter point to this book is the very fine work by Michael Rutter called Camping Made Easy.
Good but similar to his other books.......2006-12-27
I really like this book and I gave it 5 stars because it has some really great ideas that are worth a ton (they made camping more fun). However, there is some filler and this is very similar to his other books. This is definitely a book that could be shared amoung friends (try or write down a few ideas and pass it on).
His best ideas (which are also coved in his other books) are:
1. Using a ground cloth inside the tent.
2. Basic Rope work and knots (he keeps it very simple which is good)
3. Use of a tarp (and how to modify it).
4. Waterproof packing (garbage bag inside the nylon stuff sack)
5. Make your own sheath.
6. Bring a sponge for cleaning your tent.
7. How to get dry wood and start a fire.
Each of these gets a page or more. There are lots of other tid bits but most did not strike me as worth the space.
His other book, Basic Camping, is more of a book to read while this was more of a alphabetical reference or list of ideas. Both are good but if I had to get only one it would be Basic Camping.

One hundred and one positions that provide a complete game of guards, sweeps, and submissions are detailed. Customer Reviews:
Undisputed Master Discloses the "Secrets".......2006-01-08
If, by secrets, we mean quality, high percentage techniques for BJJ, submission wrestling and MMA, then this is true. As well as being an elder statesman of the legendary Gracie family and well recognised master of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Carlson is also the coach of many top BJJ, submission wrestling and MMA champions.
Names like 'Ze' Mario Sperry, Murillo Bustamonte and Rodrigo Medeiros are just a few of Carlson's fantastic stable of students. In this book, we see why they're so successful.
The book is in three parts and starts with Carlson demonstrating techniques for sport Jiu Jitsu. This section covers takedowns, guard work, sweeps and reversals, chokes and cranks, and arm bars and ankle locks.
Carlson demonstrates (or has his students demonstrate) simple and effective techniques. Often, you'll see something done slightly differently to what you're used to. IT's a little light on description. That's a bit of a pain, but it's also part of the reason this is for "Experts Only".
I especially liked the section on the "Jello Guard". Some open guard techniques you've seen before at the big competitions, but performed by the guy who developed them and refined them, giving you details on how to make them work.
The submission wrestling section covers guard work, escapes and defences, chokes and cranks, and arm bars and wrist locks. This section is mostly demonstrated by Carlson's students, but Carlson demonstrates a number of techniques.
Same comments as the previous section. Great, simple, effective techniques. Light on description, but those with some exerience will be able to pick up plenty of detail. Perhaps you'll even pick up a great technique you haven't seen before to add to your arsenal.
The MMA section is my favourite. It covers the clinch, takedown defence, guard work and side control/knee on stomach. The first two are subjects you don't usually see in Jiu Jitsu manuals. The other two parts are covered in a way I've only seen covered by Mario Sperry in his Vale Tudo series.
The standing techniques incorporate strikes that are simple enough for any grappler to use. The takedown defences and clinch techniques are simple and very high percentage.
As I said earlier, this section reminds me of Mario Sperry's Vale Tudo Series. The techniques are simpler and different, but you can see where Ze Mario developed his philosophy.
This section includes THE ABSOLUTE BEST coverage of guard use in MMA/NHB I have seen in a book.
All in all, the photography is good, the techniques are great. The book doesn't teach you how to string techniques together very well, though. They're more a set of ideas to add to your game. The book loses a star because I thought it needed more detailed descriptions in a lot of areas.
Don't let that deter you, though. Especially if you're a somewhat experienced grappler who wants to add to his or her gam or to see how to implement your existing game into MMA/NHB.
Don't let the title scare you: any level BJJ practioner can benefit from this text........2005-09-15
An excellent book showing the Carlson Gracie method of Brasilian jiu-Jitsu. He does have a unique style all his own, and when mixed with the traditional techniques show in the Renzo/Royler book, you have a great set of books in which to refer to for your class.
This book has helped me immensely, especially the nogi section. I personally prefer and compete mainly in gi divisions, but I do train regularly in nogi once a week. That is where I have really noticed this book helping my game, but it has helped my gi game as well.
Great book that should be found on any Brasilian Jiu-Jitsu practioner's bookself.
Develop A complete game.......2005-02-28
Just Got this great book, and it is amazing. It covers several aspects of grappling - GI, No Gi, MMA. I would recommend that you purchase this book, only if you have experience as a grappler......although it can be of some use for non experienced grapplers as well.
Solid techniques, indeed from the master.......2005-02-13
It's hard to argue that Carlson Gracie is a master - he's produced more champions in jiu jitsu and mixed martial arts then the next three or four top coaches combined. This is his first English language instruction manual, where you can see the master and his students executing numerous techniques. Sport jiu jitsu (with Gi), submission wrestling (No Gi) and self defense are all covered. While the material is not an encyclopedia of all the techniques out there, it is well organized and easy to follow for most any audience - even the non-experts.
Great addition for any Jiu Jitsu or Judo Collection.......2005-02-01
The book is laid out very well and a great resource for any ground fighters judo or jiu jitsu.
The Jello guard is also known and the Dela Riva guard and is a very effective guard and tournament tested. Ricardo De La Riva is one of the greatest jiu Jitsukas of all time mostly due to his revolutionary guard game.
Overall I am impressed with the techniques, and only had one small concern as some of the moves aren't as detailed in script.

Customer Reviews:
Worth taking the time to take in.......2007-09-21
I found this book transformational. Well-argued and clearly expressed, it seems to me that the ideas are founded in many years of teaching, rather than of academic publishing experience. Nonetheless each point is supported by interesting references to research. As an educator, this books makes perfect sense to me in its friendly yet uncompromising reframing of the assumptions underlying much of the received wisdom about our own, and our institutions' approach to creativity. It offers a useful guide to creating more inspiring and at the same time disciplined education that will be of greater relevance to ours, and our childrens', futures.
A wonderful book by a great mind.......2007-04-13
I heard Ken Robinson speak on a C-Span program and was quite taken by his mastery of the topic of education and sociology, so I bought one of his books Out of Our Minds... is terrific, and it is no wonder huge corporations seek this man's advice on a myriad of issues. I am in education, and the book is a relevant and informative addition to my reference library.
Essential Reading for Teachers!.......2007-01-10
'Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative' by Ken Robinson is one of the 'must read' books for modern classroom teachers. Robinson challenges many of the widely held beliefs and processes of education found in the majority of western countries. In a time of rapidly changing social and educational climates, the ideas that are raised in this book allows teachers to consider the real purpose of educating students for a modern society.
Keep it short, Sir Ken.......2006-11-28
After reading the book, I had a hard time remembering why I had thought it would be great, so I looked again at Sir Ken Robinson's recent and popular lecture at [search "Sir Ken Robinson on TED Talks"]. Now I remember -- he's an entertaining speaker, with some pretty good points about the genius of children and how we school it out of them. But the book, well, it's subtitled "Learning to Be Creative" but that really only comes in the last chapter, and his recommendations seem very conservative. He spends much too much time before that--building up his case--and that case is watered down by being second-hand. If you want to know about what schooling is doing and why, read Ivan Illich's Deschooling Society. If you're really interested in the physiological basis of non-academic intelligence, read Goleman's Emotional Intelligence (which Sir Ken quotes, but better the original). In short, the book, though it's just 200 pages, is simply too long.
I did find one memorable point: that many people miss the chance for creativity because they're not trying in the field that's natural to them. The idea that, in order to be creative, find your medium, whether it be in the "traditional" arts such as painting or dance, or in any other occupation. Whatever is closest to your heart.
What education really needs.......2006-11-05
While Robinson perhaps uses more words than necessary to make his point, I found this book refreshing because it gets to the heart of the failures in our education system that few others seem to see. The focus of education reform today is on testing to verify that all students learn certain basic facts, e.g. no child left behind. There is some merit to the new attention paid to accountability for outcomes. However, as Robinson clearly points out, the real issue is that we are not helping our students to understand and leverage their own unique talents, and we are not preparing them to deal collaboratively with a world where there are few black and white answers. Until we as a society properly identify the problem, any solutions that emerge are guaranteed to fall short--no matter how well intentioned. I found the book to be short on guidance about solutions and approaches that can address the core issues, but at least it gets the problem in front of anyone who reads it.
