One of this century's preeminent artists, Louise Bourgeois recently was the subject of a major one-person exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art, and she represented the United States in the 1993 Venice Biennale. This exquisitely designed volume, which includes 133 color reproductions, is a testimony to the importance of the act of drawing to this highly autobiographical artist, who is known primarily for her sculptures. Produced over the course of 50 years, the drawings are seen side by side with Bourgeois' own observations about her personal life, her work, and the genesis and sources of certain works, offering a very intimate vision of Bourgeois as a woman and as an artist, as well as insight into the creative act of making art.

Too die for........2004-12-21
If anyone gets the pleasure of seeing this book in the flesh, you will be sweetly content. And any other Louise Bourgeois book has nothing on it. The delicate mono-coloured drawing inspire curious thoughts in to the excentric mind of the artist. A must have, if you can get your hands on one.
A glimpse into the mind of a great artist..........1998-11-18
Browsing through this book of sketches is like reading Bourgeois' personal diary. These drawings seem to be the ones she made only for herself, to figure things out and generate more ideas. This is not her "finished" work, so don't expect "LB's Greatest Hits", but any true fan of this artist will delight in seeing her sketchbooks come to life and reading her thoughts and memories of the drawings. Full of rich spontaneity & wit.

fantastic campaign setting.......2007-03-26
Fantastic campaign setting for use with any RPG but is tailormade for the excellent Castles & Crusades system.
Awesome!.......2006-10-13
I absolutely love this book. I am in my 30s and played D&D as a kid. Recenty, I discovered that some guys I work with used to play too, so I decided to DM and get a group together. I bought some of the new 3.5 D&D books and the Eberron setting. It's tough to put my finger on it, but something was just missing. It didn't feel the same as those classic games in high school. I stumbled across this excellent tome and instantly felt like a kid again. It has a very old school feel to it. I'm using it with D&D 3.5 rules and have no problem at all. I tend to loosely outline NPCs and then come up with their stats on the fly, so converting stats from C&C to D&D was absolutely no problem at all. After working with this book, I'm seriously considering checking out C&C as well!
A FANTASTIC NEW SETTING BY THE MASTER!.......2006-01-04
I'll never forget the first time I heard of Gary Gygax. It was over 25 years ago when I was in high school was listening to a local rock station that ran a talk show late in the night. Here was this guy talking about this crazy game with elves and wizards and dwarves and such and playing the role of a warrior or priest.... Having just taken an interest in fantasy literature by reading Lord of the Rings, whatever the heck he was talking about really intrigued me. I would soon begin a quarter century love affair with fantasy RPGs and it was all thanks to the father of the genre, Gary Gygax.
Troll Lord games is in the process of putting out several volumes that cover Gygax's legendary creation of Castle Zagyg over the course of the next few years designed for the Castles & Crusades role-playing game. The first of these volumes is Yggsburgh, and it is where the any campaign into Zagyg will begin. Yggsburgh is the town surrounding the castle and the book details the town and its environs in one of the richest fantasy settings that gamers have ever experienced.
The setting is designed for games of 4th to 6th level which can be easily adjusted up or down by the GM. The first section of the book explores the basics of Yggsburgh: Population, social classes, ruling bodies, system of law, military, etc...
Section two explores the actual town in more depth, providing detail on 93 different buildings and locations in the town including temples, inns & taverns, guild houses, and the residences of important citizens like the Mayor. I cannot talk enough about the vast amount of information here. The description of the Thieves Guild is over 6 pages long itself and comes with maps to the tunnels beneath the guild as well as encounters and adventure hooks. Jumpstart your campaign by having the party visit the River Rat Tavern, the seediest tavern in town, filled with colorful and dangerous patrons.
Section three is 90 pages long and fills out the environs around Yggsburgh: lakes, forests, hills, mountains, etc. Best of all there are some four dozen encounter areas that serve as mini-adventures for the party. There's the River King's Tomb on Mound Island, an 8 page adventure and The Cursed Mine in the Woodland Hills which is a lengthy 10 page adventure. A party can spend weeks exploring all of these areas before even getting to Castle Zagyg.
Appendices provide further detail on building styles, crime & punishment tables, encounter tables that include dozens of more urban adventure hooks, magic items and spells, monsters, and skills. There are several maps within the pages of the book as well as a full color, 24" x 30" fold out map done is a style very similar to the old World of Grey Hawk fantasy setting.
Ultimately what will make or break any campaign setting is if the world comes alive when you play it and Yggsburgh does just that. It's written to allow gamers freedom to adapt it to their own campaign, or, if they're lazy like me, to use it right off the shelf with little preparation needed. The book is well-written and edited and even though the information in its 256 pages is vast, it never becomes dull or clichéd.
Gygax is proving once again why fantasy RPG's begin with him!

AMERICAN SPLENDOR
The Life and Times of Harvey Pekar
Two classic comic anthologies in one volume
Stories by Harvey Pekar
Introduction by R. Crumb
Art by Kevin Brown, Gregory Budgett, Sean Carroll, Sue Cavey, R. Crumb, Gary Dumm, Val Mayerik, and Gerry Shamray
The classic collection of the comics that inspired the movie American Splendor, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival
American Splendor is the world’s first literary comic book. Cleveland native Harvey Pekar is a true American original. A V.A. hospital file clerk and comic book writer, Harvey chronicles the ordinary and mundane in stories both funny and touching. His dead-on eye for the frustrations and minutiae of the workaday world mix in a delicate balance with his insight into personal relationships. Pekar has been compared to Dreiser, Dostoevsky, and Lenny Bruce. But he is truly more than all of them—he is himself.
“Mr. Pekar has . . . proven that comics can address the ambiguities of daily living, that like the finest fiction, they can hold a mirror up to life.”
—The New York Times
“[Pekar] has a vision that makes daily city life—a ride on the bus, a run-in with a boss, or simply buying bread—dramatic.”
—Chicago Sun-Times
“Simply stated, American Splendor is the most superb literary endeavor to come off the streets of Cleveland in decades.”
—The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)
“Mr. Pekar lets all of life flood into his panels: the humdrum and the heroic, the gritty and the grand.”
—The New York Times Book Review

A Humdrum Life Writ Large.......2006-09-07
I've been a fan of Harvey Pekar's work for over fifteen years. The first time I ever read his self-published comix, American Splendor, I was impressed by its examination of everyday life. His self-effacing humor grows on those who want more than mainstream comics starring spandex-clad teens with superpowers. Compared with Pekar, Spidey has it easy.
I was happy when this movie tie-in release of his early collected work was published. The everyday brilliance of the real life interactions between Pekar and his friends, co-workers and loved ones merit more attention by discerning readers. It would behoove anyone who cares about the comix medium to claim a copy for their personal reading enjoyment. This volume is not for collectors, but for fans of alternative graphic literature who want more meat and potatoes rather than the visual eye candy of more mainstream publishers.
Pekar has been described as a "working class intellectual" (The Comics Journal), and this label is respectfully accurate. He comes from a generation who grew up devouring a culture that had more respect for intelligence than is common today. Instead of just mourning this trend, Pekar rebels from it in true beatnik fashion. His long-time association with R. Crumb (who drew the very first American Splendor story, "The Harvey Pekar Name Story") attracted other artists within Cleveland as well as from other locations as the series has progressed.
The everyday heroism of Pekar working a civil service job in order to create his vision of the potential of graphic literature comes through in every page of this collection. I am glad that there are other collections and issues of American Splendor that are available. It would be grand if future generations of comix fans could gravitate around the work that Pekar has never tired from creating. Even at the worst of his lymphoma and chemo treatments, he has never quit observing and relating the drama of everyday life.
the best pekar collection.......2006-07-08
i own i think every american splendor collection book there is, and this one is my favorite. there's a few in particular that really blow me away (the one with pekar wondering around a park, reflecting on his past marriage, his present, and whether there is a God is spectacular). there are a wide variety of artists, from the goofy robert crumb drawings to more serious ones. there are certainly weak points IMO, but not as much as in the other collections. while "the quitter" is his most consistent i've read so far, there's no replacement for finding a really cool comic collection like this and reading through it, finding a bunch of random pekar stories and seeing which ones you enjoy best.
Splendid glimpse into the male mind in a comic book format.......2005-12-24
American Splendor: The Life and Times of Harvey Pekar is the largest published collection of the comic series, containing the complete text of American Splendor and More American Splendor. With an introduction by R. Crumb and art by Kevin Brown, Gregory Budgett, Sean Carroll, Sue Cavey, R. Crumb, Gary Drumm, Val Materick, and Gerry Shamray this is 320 pages of a classic American comic.
Pekar's work is a cerebral approach to the comic medium. Many of the panels have no dialog and only illustrate the external while the text reveals the thought stream of Pekar's mind. His ability to portray the inner workings of his thoughts, in a humorous and sympathetic manner, is the key to the success of his writings. The comic is a working class version of Seinfeld with a populist self-made intellectual as the leading character. Yet there is a Existentialist angst to this work that puts it in a class by itself.
This book literally changed my life!.......2004-06-10
When I was a student at the University of South carolina in 1987, I was browsing through the library and I came across "American Splendor" with the cartoon cover of Harvey on a Johnny Carsonish talk show. It looked interesting, and when I read it- WHOA!
These are stories straight from real life like you've never read them before! The tale of the old man who tells Harvey great stories, but clams up when he meets an attractive lady. Emil, the lonely Slav whose racism covers his insecurities, Mr. Boats, the cranky old man whose race (African-American) is never called attention to in the stories. I was moved more than anything I've read since Charles Schulz and said, "DAMN! If this guy can write like this,I should give it a try."
Since then,I've been a newspaper commetator as well as a writer of historical articles.
Thank you Harvey, for showing me that I can.
Real life made entertaining...............2004-05-01
I had all of Harvey's comic books up until 1980. When I came back from Navy boot camp I looked all over the house for them. I couldn't find them, however, and came to find out my mom threw them away! It was a huge disappointment because anyone that has read his accounts can identify with the material. I forgot about American Splendor until a few years ago...when I came across a copy of the anthology at a book store here in Cleveland. I bought it and found the other anthology and Our Cancer Year at Amazon. Bought both issues without a thought. You can take solace in the fact that "you aren't the only one" going through these things. It is very cathartic. Sometimes I'm glad I don't have Harvey's problems and other times I would trade mine for his. A friend of mine, knowing my conservative views, was surprised to find my interest in American Splendor. "Sure", I told him, "Harvey is on the left and I'm on the right politically, but life's problems aren't political. Hey, when you get to thinking about it a broken down car or lost glasses afflict us all." I would recommend this book to everyone because
we are all in the same boat...some just sink faster.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Leadership Textbook.......2007-05-12
This book propels you on a tour of some unique and innovative ideas on how to identify and develop future leaders. This is an invaluable reference for organisations that need to gaurantee their future success by ensuring that it has great leadership talent. This excellent book provides you with an incredible amount of practical information that will help you make smart decisions and avoid costly mistakes.
This is a well written and organised guide that executives should find handy and helpful. Without talented leaders, an organisation cannot hope to survive and thrive in the fast changing and highly competitive operating environment.
This is among the best books on leadership on the market that I highly recommend.
Insightful!.......2004-06-09
This is a comprehensive guide to identifying and developing future leaders. The authors present an exhaustive (sometimes exhausting) explanation of a program called "Acceleration Pooling" - a fancy collective name for grouping everyone in your firm who has the potential to lead. Much of the content seems like common sense, yet, organizations harried by short-term challenges can easily neglect long-term tasks, such as leadership development. This carefully planned, meticulously documented approach may keep organizations from neglecting the future. Despite its turgid, jargon-choked style, this book may fill the need. Time-pressed managers can glean the most important points quickly from chapters 2, 6 and 16, which have some solid gold principles of succession planning. Human Resource managers will want to delve into the other chapters. The authors, who are consultants, make a strong case for hiring consultants to implement this system, and have registered, copyrighted, service marked and/or trademarked every form and bit of terminology that could possibly be protected. We note that many of these leadership building methods, tools and techniques are in the public domain, in case you want to do-it-yourself, using this guide book.
