Book Description

The year 2002 marks the 50th anniversary of MAD Magazine, America's longest-running periodical of humor and satire. Throughout its long history, one of the most immediate, defining, and influential aspects of MAD has been its unique art; the magazine is a treasury of illustrated humor. MAD Art is a hilarious look at five decades of America's premiere showcase for parody, satire, and wit. All of MAD's "Usual Gang of Idiots" are represented, beginning with Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder and continuing on through more recent Idiots like Richard Williams and Hermann Mejia. MAD fans will find fascinating one-on-one discussions with veteran MAD artists about their favorite pieces, stylistic influences, and the references they used in creating their art. Also included are quotes from artists about each other's work, like Sam Viviano's comments on Mort Drucker, Tom Bunk's conversation about Basil Wolverton, and many more. MAD's writers are essential to its success-and readers will discover captivating personal interviews with the writers who helped create the side-splitting text accompanying the illustrations. There is also a section on the talented writer/artists, such as Al Jaffee, John Caldwell, and Sergio AragonŽs, who write as well as illustrate their own material. Finally, this authorized guide through MAD history includes a treasury of MAD's infamous advertising parodies; samples of classic cover and interior art; and dozens of rare and never-before-seen preliminary sketches, photos, and much more. The quintessential reference for every devoted MAD fanatic!

5 out of 5 stars A celebration of the artists who made MAD what it was (is).......2003-12-27

The title of "MAD Art" is a nice, simple title, achieving a sense of balance by consisting of a pair of three letter words, but it is a bit off target. Even when you through in the subtitle--"A Visual Celebration of the Art of 'MAD' Magazine and the Idiots Who Create It"--we are still off the beam a bit, because what Mark Evanier has compiled here is a tribute to the specific artists who made "MAD" magazine the cultural icon it has been ever since I was a kid (and a little bit earlier than that as well). Evanier, a former assistant to the legendary Jack Kirby has written comic books (including "Groo the Wanderer" with "MAD" artist Sergio Aragones) as well as becoming a historian on the subject of cartooning, so there is a sense of scholarship to this effort. Those who comes to this rather thick trade paperback with expectations of reading some choice movie parodies and other familiar "MAD" pieces are going to be disappointed, because this is not that type of "MAD" collection.

Evanier uses a double chronology for "MAD Art," with the chapters detailing the general process by which artists join the "MAD" gang of idiots and end up producing their mini-comic masterpieces in discrete stages, while each chapter provides profiles of over five dozen artists with examples of their work, from the infamous advertising parodies, and classic front (and black) covers to the interior art, including dozens of rare and previously unseen preliminary sketches and photographs. That means the first chapter, representing the fabled time when "MAD" was a E.C. comic book, looks at the legendary artist Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis, Will Elder, John Severin, and Wallace Wood. There is certainly something to be said for any list of artists that end up with Wally Wood being on the bottom. Kurtzman gets special credit for being the writer-editor and occasional artist for the all 23 of the comic book issues and the first five of "MAD" as a magazine, while Davis is the premier caricature artist of our time.

With each chapter revealing another wave of fan favorites, you get a sense for how the "MAD" stable of artists was created. The second stage sees Dave Berg, Bob Clarke, Mort Drucker, Frank Kelly Freas, Don Martin, and Norman Mingo being added to the ranks, while chapter three looks at Sergio Aragones, Paul Coker Jr., Harry North, Antonio Prohias, Jack Rickard, and Angelo Torres. These are the artists that defined "MAD" when I was a mere lad, and even if you do not recognize the name, you will recognize the artwork (I actually made it almost all the way to 2004 before I realized that Antonio Prohias did all the Spy vs. Spy bits when I was a kid).

However, after that point we are up to the next generation of "MAD" artists, which means those who have been working on the magazine since I moved on up to "The National Lampoon" and then abandoned written satire for weekly doses of "Saturday Night Live." So Tom Bunk, John Caldwell, Don "Duck" Edwing, Sam Viviano, Drew Friedman, and Roberto Parada were all news to me. But, to be fair, how many people have actually been reading "MAD" magazine for a half-century? If the younger generation gets introduced to Harvey Kurtzman, then that justifies this entire 304-page book with its black-and-white illustrations and two 16-page color sections. As for me, my favorite of the "new" artists is Richard Williams, with his updating of Norman Rockwell for the 90's (The cast of the first "Survivor" doing the Thanksgiving dinner "Freedom From Want" bit).

For those who are interested in finding out about the favorite pieces, stylistic influence, and references the veteran "MAD" contributors used to create their art, "MAD Art" is going to be a treat. If it tries the patience, not to mention the memory, of those who have no clue who "Flesh Garden" and the "Lone Stranger" are parodies of, then that is their problem. It is about time somebody took the artists of "MAD" magazine seriously.

4 out of 5 stars All I Need To Know About The Sixties I Learned From MAD!.......2003-11-21

What a rush of nostalgia this compilation of MAD art brings back! I first started reading MAD as a late pre-teen, in the early Seventies. As I collected issues, I came into possession of some older copies, from which I got my first impressions of the lately concluded Sixties. The early MAD, freshly spawned from EC Comics back when William Gaines had a buzzcut, didn't interest me. But once he let his hair down and assembled his famous Usual Gang Of Idiots, the resulting humor and satire was a surefire hit with smart-alecky adolescent boys like me.

This collection presents a couple of pages of biography on each artist, along with a few panels of their work. I remembered most all of them from my era, but some were rediscoveries for me. Sergio Aragones, Jack Davis, Paul Coker, Jr., Al Jaffee with his goony inventions, Dave Berg--to name them is to summon to mind a favorite riff in the greatest cartooning ensemble ever assembled. Possibly the most poignant was the sad case of Don Martin, who drew those jug-headed characters in those "One Fine Day" episodes. Through illness and unspecified other problems, he was forced into an unwanted collaboration with the equally talented Duck Edwing, and then decamped altogether to an imitator, before passing away not too long ago.

If you are not familiar with MAD, then you certainly can't be expected to have all these fond memories. The social satire is dated in a retrospective like this, too. But coming to the collection cold, you'll still find something to chuckle at, surely. With so much talent on display, it'd be impossible not to.

3 out of 5 stars Artist only please????.......2003-11-02

I liked this book in the sense that it was a Mad sampler. I got to see art by old friends (I have been into Mad since the early 1970s) but I don't know if a novice researcher would find this book as good. There are short biographical sketches of all involved.

The best history of Mad was The Mad World Of Bill Gaines which is sadly out of print for decades now.

Also while I know that the title is Mad Art this book lacks for not talking of the writers of Mad.

3 out of 5 stars too small to read.......2003-10-15

I could not believe that a book with such obvious
interest to many would be printed in the form it was.
The print is so small in the cartoons that have been
reproduced that one needs a magnifying glass to read.

And I am not exagerrating. I would rate this book
as a 5 if it were not published with such unreadable print.

3 out of 5 stars The Tepid Mad.......2003-07-05

Everyone has nostalgic affection for what Mad once was, and the art generated for it in its heyday has been endlessly recycled. The selections for this book are nice, but the reproductions are tiny. There are relatively few of the gorgeous full color paintings that graced its pages in the '50s and '60s, and no roughs or preliminary sketches to give any insight into the process.

The writing is perky and lightweight, like a testamonial speech for a retiring employee, with a little biographical information on each artist, where he was schooled, what a gifted cartoonist, how respected by his peers, what a funny guy, etc. Here and there are hints at the pressures that must have come into play in the production of the magazine, but propriety and niceness always win out, and the real story is glossed over with well-worn Madisms like, "...mainly because...!" and other breezy, hand-me-down catchphrases. With no glimpse into the creative life behind the vacant gaze of Alfred E. Neuman, you might as well buy a Mad reprint from the days when it used to parody superficial fluff like this book.

The only interesting thing about "Mad Art" is its inclusion of the newer artists who have appeared since most of us stopped reading the magazine. These newcomers are technically rather good (if unoriginal), and it's important to see what's being done today, even though Mad hasn't been funny for a decade and a half.

4 out of 5 stars Humor in Art.......2000-03-31

This book celebrates visual humor in its many forms: whimsy, wit, parody, irony, satire, and nonsense. Nearly two hundred reproductions (many in color) are used to illustrate humor as an art form. Various types of visual humor are traced using comic iconography found in early history down through the ages to contemporary times. Both 2-D and 3-D forms of humorous art are considered as the author explores ways in which artists transform ordinary subjects into strange and unconventional ones.

1 out of 5 stars Historic Costumes and How to Make Them.......2007-08-23

There is more to Historic Costumes than Medevil times, but that is all this book covers. I was not happy with it and returned it. Improve the description so that it specifies the time period covered, and it would be a great book.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the faint-hearted.......2007-07-13

This book gives a extremely brief overview of many styles of clothing throughout the last 1200 years. If you are after detailed instructions on how to make medieval clothing, then this book is not for you. However, if you are an accomplished tailor and can work from line drawings, you have the right book.
I did not find this book particularly helpful with how to make the clothing, but it did show me what styles were around.
Be aware that this book gives no measurements nor types of materials used, nor does it assist the serious re-enactor.
This book is aimed, in my opinion, at someone who is planning to attend a fancy dress party and who intends to wear the outfit they make once only.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Patterns inside.......2007-06-27

I was pleased with the number of patterns and detailed instructions in this book. The patterns need to be enlarged or drawn to scale in order to use them. It would be very useful for anyone who makes costumes or who is interested in fashion.

5 out of 5 stars Experience Necessary..........2007-05-10

If you're more than a beginning seamstress then everything makes sense and it easy to follow. Gave me a lot of great ideas on how to design and make some SCA garb.

Three of Eddie Campbell's "Alec" books collected into a single volume for the first time. "Alec: Three Piece Suit" includes: "Graffiti Kitchen," considered by many to be his finest work. A mad story about love and a three-way situation: Alec loves Georgette, her mother and himself; "Little Italy," a record of a year spent in tropical North Queensland in Australia; & "The Dance of Lifey Death," in which Alec ruminates on "wifey" and kids -- all the important things in life.Eddie Campbell's "Alec" stories are a brilliant and insightful romp through his own life. In them, we witness Eddie's progression from "beer to wine," or to put it more accurately, his inevitable maturation through time. Whether it's tales of his early pub-crawlin' days, or glimpses into his current private life with "wifey" and kids, there are "truths" here that transcend the factual and paint a picture of the way life should be.

This authoritative guide to those annoying and embarrassing tricks everyone grows up with (and maybe never outgrow) provides "sage" advice for the young and the young at heart. Arranged in encyclopedic format, each of the more than 50 entries includes a formal definition of the prank, followed by tips for execution and countermeasures. Illustrations document the best technique for affixing a "kick me" sign to someone's back, or how to wriggle out of a noogie-giver's clutches. A ranking system places each act on a scale of 1 to 10 for its degree of pain, embarrassment, annoyance, and degree of difficulty. Other fun and irritating tricks include the Burp ’n' Blow, the Rat Tail, the Eskimo Hook, and the Marker ’Stache.

I picked this up after a review in the campus newspaper recommended it as a good diversion from cramming for finals. It is not only hysterical, but also very practical. I have already pulled the Loose Lid and Soda Exploda on two of my room mates. What's funny to me is how seriously it is written. I assume (hope!) that the authors are being dry intentionally. Either way, it's already a staple in the common room.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Humor.......2005-03-31

This book brought me back to my childhood, reliving the pranks my brothers and I indulged in. The 'rating' scale used to determine degrees of difficulty, embarrassment and annoyance levels for each act were great. Beware of the Flour Shower!

    Book Description

"Presents Disney culture-so often thought of as a bastion of mainstream, heterosexual family values-in a fascinating and illuminating new light. Tinker Belles and Evil Queens is sharp and rigorously researched work. A veritable alternative history of Disney."

--Dana Polan, University of Southern California

From its Magic Kingdom theme parks to its udderless cows, the Walt Disney Company has successfully maintained itself as the brand name of conservative American family values. But the Walt Disney Company has also had a long and complex relationship to the gay and lesbian community that is only now becoming visible.

In Tinker Belles and Evil Queens, Sean Griffin traces the evolution of this interaction between the company and gay communities, from the 1930s use of Mickey Mouse as a code phrase for gay to the 1990s "Gay Nights" at the Magic Kingdom. Armed with first-person accounts from Disney audiences, Griffin demonstrates how Disney animation, live-action films, television series, theme parks, and merchandise provide varied motifs and characteristics that readily lend themselves to use by gay culture. But Griffin delves further to explore the role of gays and lesbians within the company, through an examination of the background of early studio personnel, an account of sexual activism within the firm, and the story of the company's own concrete efforts to give recognition to gay voices and desires.

The first book to address the history of the gay community and Disney, Tinker Belles and Evil Queens broadly examines the ambiguous legacy of how modern consumerism and advertising have affected the ways lesbians and gay men have expressed their sexuality. Disney itself is shown as sensitive to gay and lesbian audiences, while exploiting those same audiences as a niche market with strong buying power. Finally, Griffin demonstrates how queer audiences have co-opted Disney products for themselves-and in turn how Disney's corporate strategies have influenced our very definitions of sexuality.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Happiest Place in the World.......2007-10-03

Versed in the theories of Foucault and post-colonialist writers, Griffin does a wonderful job of letting the Disney story speak for itself even when it doesn't quite match what theoreticians might expect. Nevertheless, as Disney surreptitiously reaches out to the gay market, Griffin makes clear that it is with an eye to profit from the segment without disowning it cherished 'family' brand image. I compare the attitude to those who organize Gay Pride Parades--the business sponsors often feel politics distracts from the Spectacle meant to promote their wares!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful media studies book.......2007-05-26

I'm a fairly big Disney fan, and also a big fan of subculture studies and media studies. So, this book is right up my alley. I am not gay, however. This book is filled with insight that helps to reinterpret Disney films from the silent era to the present day with a 'queer sensibility'.

The familiarity the author has with the many decades of Disney material (primarily animated shorts and feature films but also the animated films and TV shows) is impressive. What's great is thanks to Disney's releasing of the Treasures collection, the average reader can follow along to just about everything mentioned in the book.

    Overall, a great read.

The rise of rock-and-roll--in a nutshell, with particular attention paid to the business side of the equation. Charlie Gillett, a British journalist, loves the music, and his passion is evident throughout. Yet the greatest strength of the book is the way Gillett tracks the resistance of the music industry to early rock-and-roll, which was followed (needless to say) by a frantic rush to engulf and devour it.

4 out of 5 stars Sound of the city?.......2007-01-09

I won't go as far as to say this is the best book ever written about pop-music. It definitely has it good points, especially in the beginning chapter about the different areas of music, styles etc. After that it is more a long list of paragraphs on bands. They fit superbly into the canon of music into the 1970's.
There were some interesting facts that I didn't know which really made me enjoy the book (like a Monkee writing 'Different Drum').

In the end of the book is a list of songs, a sort of canonical list that fits neatly into the storyline.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST I HAVE READ ON THIS SUBJECT BY FAR.......2006-09-21

This work is comprehensive, well researched and just as importantly, well written. Not only is the music addressed, but the problems this music encountered in the early years, something that is now often forgotten, is throughly examined. The social impact of this music, one of the most important aspects in my way of feeling, is examined in great detail. Of less personal interest to me was the business end, but that is just me, but I feel that many would find this fascinating as well as the rest. This work goes along way in helping understand R&R, our society in general and our culture in particular. I found this to be a well organized, easy read and one that I do recommend for your library.

3 out of 5 stars Great but not for musical reasons.......2006-06-01

The Sound of the City is informative and provides a detailed account of the economical, artistic, and sociological forces that shaped pop music at the beginning of the 20th century. The detailed listening list at the end of the book is helpful and serves as an excellent propaedeutic to its study.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have book.......2006-02-25

This book by Charlie Gillet has to be the ultimate guide to anyone who has an interest in popular music from the 50's and 60's upwards.I promised myself this book when it first came out, but never got around to purchasing it, until last month.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on Rock 'n' Roll ever written.......1999-08-28

As rock 'n' roll recedes into the past, what actually was rock 'n roll becomes less and less clear. The Sound of the City, first written some thirty years ago, remains the best book on the subject. Period. I know. I was there listening to it all as it unfolded.

Gillett weaves the various forms together -- vocal group, jump blues, southern pop gospel, urban big band blues, rockabilly -- and constructs a means to understand it as a musical movement.

An important strength is the emphasis on location and record label, something few younger critics understand today. We called it all rock 'n' roll then, although as Gillett relates, it all turned into blues for teenagers.

The Sound of the City remains the best overall description of the music of the 1946-1964 era.

                      Book Description

Each card in this fully-illustrated 78-card deck is a fantastically realistic image of a fairytale feline world where Baroque cats link and sashay through gardens, palaces, inns and theatres. All sorts of incidents take place, and each card seems to carry a whole story within it.

The lively and engaging companion book discusses the backgrounds and meanings of each image, with simple instructions on how to read the deck - reading with "reversals" is included, and as well as popular spreads, a challenging new spread "The Cat's Tale" is described. There is also a charming and enlightening section on the cats' interpretations of the cards.

This may be the most "readable" cat tarot ever. It is certainly one of the most lavishly and lovingly illustrated. A must for anyone who loves costumes, castles or cats - not to mention tarot!

Note: Deck is also available separately, packaged with informative booklet.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading Deck.......2006-06-01

"There seems to be some definite, if indefinable, link between cats and tarot...Could it be that people who are attracted to animals as enigmatic, untamable and yet at the same time as warmly emotional as cats also find some of these same qualities in the tarot?" - From the companion book

Karen Mahony and Alex Ukolov, the creative geniuses who run baba studio and Magic Realist Press in Prague, meld lavish costumes, posed cats, stunning Bohemian scenery, and quirky art and architecture in the Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot. While many "cat decks" are mostly art decks, this gorgeous Tarot is a bona fide reading deck based on the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition.

Sumptuous fabrics and lovely detailing grace the costumes created by Finnish artist Anna Hakkarainen, while many of the "models" used in the Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot were from the Prague Cats Rescue Home. Russian Blues, Tabbies, Persians, Siamese, Orientals, British Shorthairs, mixed breeds--all manner of hue and personality infuse these cards.

From the singing Abyssinian on the 3 of Pentacles to the wide-eyed kitten on the Sun card (which was coaxed to stand up on a horse with a teaspoon of cream!), the almost-human expressions surprise and delight. The fierceness of the Siberian on the Knight of Swords crackles with energy, and the sweet innocence of the 6 of Cups elicits an "awww!" for both its cuteness and the way it captures the essence of this card. The 9 of Cups is a hilarious card, with a British shorthair licking his lips in snarky Puss in Boots fashion. Ms. Mahony writes of this card:

"A somewhat portly and obviously very satisfied cat sits on a barrel in the public room of an inn, licking his lips. Behind him, carved in wood, can be a seen a scene of grand merrymaking."

Because some readers prefer Strength and Justice as either Trump 8 or 11, the deck designers have chosen to keep the Majors unnumbered. In addition to the standard RWS attributions and format, Ms. Mahony and Mr. Ukolov have also added a "good luck" card to the Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot: Hermes--which shows a golden statue of the god in a sunny courtyard while a lovely cat clothed in a sage green gown with white ruffles looks on. At first glance, it appears the card backings are fully reversible, but upon closer inspection, you can see the names Ukolov and Mahony on opposing sides. Because the script is so small, however, the backings still work wonderfully for reversals.

The Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot is an excellent reading deck, and especially good as a deck for children or cat lovers. Because this deck follows RWS, it can be used in conjunction with many Tarot books, making it a great beginner's deck, as well. I've had quite a few insights with these cards, which I've jotted down in my Tarot journal. While an artistically exquisite Tarot that belongs in every art deck collection, it's an excellent deck for both reading and meditation. (Note: I highly recommend getting the entire Kit, because Ms. Mahony's prose is exquisite, offering additional insights into both this deck and the Tarot in general).

5 out of 5 stars Soft paws and gentle claws.......2004-12-10

Themed tarot decks must show a delicate balance between creativity and integrity to one of the foundational decks of tarot. The Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot achieves this lofty goal in a superb and charming way. The familiar traditions of the Rider Waite Smith tarot are enhanced rather than obscured by Karen Mahoney and Alex Ukolov's creativity.

I always 'ask' a tarot deck about what it will tell me, how I should approach it, and how well we will get on, using a simple three card spread. This deck promised me tales (tails?) of intrigue and Baroque fantasy, a dream world where true vision is reflected in the round green eyes of a cat.

One bit of advice--buy the boxed set. The book that accompanies the deck adds so much pleasure to owning the deck. Read the cats' biographies, and enjoy the cats' perspective on tarot.

Anything below 5 stars for this book is not fair. This is an excellent reference material, not just a one time read. My regret is that I didn't read it right after it came out.

This book has given me an extensive overview of securities operations - the striking feature of this book is its simplicity - concepts have been presented in a very simple manner with day to day illustrations - a must buy for those who want to understand the Capital Markets industry better.

As the author says in Page 414 "A major reason for writing this book is the need for IT personnel to attain adequate level of understanding.....". This book completely meets the objective. As a practicing IT professional, reading this book was a wonderful experience. It helps professionals like me to gain useful domain knowledge. I hope we have more books like this one, covering other industry sectors.

I am just about finished the book and have found it to be an excellent guide, precise and well written. As an `IT Person' who has steadily moved closer to the business over the years and hence the need to understand how things `work' it has allowed me to consolidate and confirm my understanding of the key areas. Although I have a number of years experience, particularly from the custodian side, this has allowed me to fully appreciate the full process. The examples that run throughout the book that explains the concepts presented are superb and ensure a firm understanding of the subject area
