Lavish and Visually Stunning .......2006-02-21
I acquired this book for jewelry design reference, it was highly recommended by a designer friend who trained in Paris for Jewelry design. The book contains just over 140 pages, the first 54 dedicated to text accompanied with quick sketches depicting Coco Chanel and her fashions; the remainder is filled with glossy photos of Chanel's jewelry creations, most in full color, a few other period stills in black and white. The photos are large, very sharp and show much of the fine detail of her jewelry, often dedicating one page to a single piece.
The book includes some images of objects of antiquity from which Chanel was clearly inspired, or in some cases copied directly. Chanel's Byzantium crosses are especially intriguing for capturing a look of great antiquity. I found the strong Renaissance and Baroque forms to be equally inspiring.
I would have welcomed an even more expansive book that included more photos however this book covers pieces from the 1930's to the 1960's, and some space has been dedicated to all the various styles.

Book Description
One of the most visible personalities of her era, Gabrielle Chanel invented a style that was synonymous with modernity and chic. What is perhaps less well known is that the grande dame of twentieth-century fashion used platinum and diamonds to create an exceptional collection of the finest jewelry. This daring experiment is currently a new source of inspiration for Chanel, which through its fine jewelry department in the Place Vendme in Paris, is once again demonstrating the art of creating and wearing exceptional jewelry. The adventure is both classic and contemporary and perpetuates one of the greatest names of the century.

Separated at Birth 2 (Separated at Birth?)
ASIN: 0385247443
Release Date: 1988-10-01 |
Book Description
A must-read exploration of this volatile member of the "Axis of Evil."
Customer Reviews:
The One Book to Read re the NORK Crisis.......2005-02-13
I picked up a copy of "Separated at Birth" this morning and finished it this evening. I've lived in Seoul since November 1994 and, as a foreign investor in Korea, have followed events here and the commentary thereon closely. This is simply the most succinctly accurate account of, and the most compelling prescription for dealing with, the challenge posed by NK, that I've read in ten years.
Preaching to the Choir.......2005-01-25
This is not a bad book. However, it could be better.
Mr. Cucullu attempts to show us how North and South Korea have developed since the end of the Korean War and looks a little into possible futures. He does an excellent job in telling the story of South Korea's transformation from an authoritarian/Third World nation into a representative democrary with a well developed economy. The good colonel peppers the standard historical run down with personal experiences while serving many years in Korea with the US Army. Making you actually feel the transformation of the Republic of Korea into a modern society is a real treat.
The author doesnt do a very good job explaining North Korea. In fact, his discussions of the DPRK are really just tirades that boil down to the fact that living in North Korea is unpleasant and the Kim regime sucks. Hey, Im on board with this. But I would like to have seen more analysis. Also, he makes a few of what I call "wild eyed" statements. First, he posits that North Korea killed prisoners in South Korean army uniforms in June 1950 to produce evidence to justify the Korean War. This is plausible, but where is the evidence? Also, he claims Kim Jong Il has taken family members of senior DPRK officials hostage to keep them in line. Again, I wouldnt be at all surprised if this were true. That said, Id like to see some proof.
One final comment. The Publishers Weekly review notes Cucullu is critical of revisionist historians but doesnt consider their arguments. The arguments of the likes of Bruce Cummings are not really worth commenting on as they have been utterly and completely refuted. Its pretty safe to assume North Korean society is dysfunctional and the Kims are horrible leaders.
North Korea's 20th century history is explored in full.......2004-12-08
With North Korea rising to become the new 'evil' in the world in its pursuit of nuclear weaponry, a book such as Gordon Cucullu's Separated At Birth becomes even more essential, providing a history of North and South Korea with a new emphasis on just how North Korean became the 'evil twin' of the two. North Korea's 20th century history is explored in full in Separated At Birth: from its initial separation from the south and changing relationships with China, Japan and the U.S. to its growing role as a nuclear force. The focus on Kim Jong-Il, ruler of North Korea, provides many condemning visions of the dictator and his approaches, but most importantly, Separated At Birth analyzes world concerns, options, and realities in working with the 'rogue' nation. Cucullu is a former Special Forces Green Beret colonel, serving over 20 years in the military in Asia: his analysis is personal - and astute.
A fascinating book of grave importance to our future........2004-11-26
This work by Gordon Cucullu is sure to be very valuable to those of us who follow the world situation with serious thought and, let's face it, worry!
It's a very enlightening summary of the development and present-day status of one of the world's most secretive and most disastrous areas. Such insight can only be presented by one who spent many years living and working in close proximity of the people and the events which engulfed an innocent nation in almost unimaginable calamity.
I learned a great deal from Cucullu's keen observations regarding the history, development and extensive suffering of the Korean people. It touched me very closely, because I find their fate similar in many ways to that of my native Hungary. Maybe that is another reason why I felt so sympathetic to their terrible struggle and awful situation with the communist North.
This analysis of the geopolitical importance of the North Korean threat is not only excellent, but it brings home the extremely serious nature of that threat. The danger of a maniac such as Kim Yong Il doing something totally devastating is not only very real, but even likely, if he feels threatened to the point of no return.
Cucullu's suggestions on how to deal with the threat are very serious and can have not only far-reaching, but life saving effects on the Free World. It also contains a fascinating analysis of the South Korean role in all this which, I'm sure, is very little understood by those who aren't close to the situation. I can only hope that our present leadership will take the necessary steps in proving our country's strength, endurance, will-power and courage to face the threat posed by North Korea.
This book is a must-read for those of us who are seriously concerned with the security of our nation and the Free World.
well distilled ideas presented less skillfully.......2004-11-19
I believe the thesis and facts because the author is so evidently a straight shooter. This book is my introduction to the North/South Korea topic and I'm sure will serve as a very solid cornerstone.

In the Blink of an Eye Revised 2nd Edition
ASIN: 0941188817 |
Book Description
This book explains how cutting-edge technology and the age-old desire to tell a story have come together in the form of Digital Cinema
Customer Reviews:
Kind of depressed me.......2005-08-28
I read this book with one thing in mind-will it help make WebcamMurder.com (my first digital feature) a success?
If I had been interested in an overview of the past and future of digital film from a technical point of view, I daresay I'd have given more stars. Probably I'd have been fascinated by the mechanics of digital projection, lines of resolution or the cost of "lighting and grip equipment, plus a small rental truck to transport all the equipment: $1500 a day, plus parking fees and insurance." How many beginning digital filmmakers can squeeze a truck for grip equipment into their budget?
I wasn't too entranced to read, "If you don't have big name actors, it's much harder to get people to tune in to [your movie]"...on the Internet! The one place open to any film by anybody. I don't read how-to books to get more depressed about my chances than before I read them.
My attention perked up during the hopeful parts, like Chapter 10, where the authors name small companies looking for films to produce or distribute, with contact information in the appendix. Way to go. However, Madstone Films in New York, which the books says, "hires young film directors and produces their first features on digital video," shut down operations in June, 2004. And the submissions page on Los Angeles-based Visionbox Media's website now says, "Unfortunately, we are no longer able to accept unsolicited submissions for development and production."
Not that a book published in 2003 should be held responsible for changes in the world two years later. But it's something to think about before you get carried away by the five star reviews here.
Unfortunately, warnings to filmmakers throughout the book still apply. For instance, if you finance your movie with credit cards, you'll have to pay back the credit card companies. And even if you spend relatively little money, you could lose it all if your movie is so small and personal that nobody wants to see it.
Thankfully, the authors end on a positive note: "If you have a story you want to tell, there is no excuse not to go out and tell it." They don't specifically say that telling it in a movie is the wisest decision, but I'll take a little encouragement anywhere I can find it.
A must-have book for filmmakers.......2004-01-06
I love this book. The writing is clear and clean, and while it covers basically *everything*, it's never either condescending or overly simplistic. If you want to make a digital movie, this nuts-and-bolts guide should be your first read.
An inspiring and encouraging book.......2004-01-05
Digital Cinema is a must-read for anyone interested in filmmaking today. Actually, it is a must-read for anyone interested in telling stories because, as authors Taylor and Hsu convincingly argue, digital cinema is the cutting-edge medium for today's storytellers. "Going back to our cave-dwelling ancestors sitting around a fire," say the authors, "the human impulse to entertain, provoke, move, enlighten, and share has shaped our whole history of dramatic, written and visual work. There is a very basic human need for translating internal thoughts and emotions into a medium that can effectively and affectingly convey them to others...and digital technology promises a quantum leap in access to visual storytelling tools." Hsu and Taylor clearly know their field, and expertly guide the reader through a highly readable explanation of why digital cinema has "democratized the filmmaking process," making it much easier for individuals with stories to tell to reach their audiences. They acknowledge that simply owning an digital video camera is not enough, however, and carefully detail the often challenging realities involved in making even a digital picture. Still, if you read this book, you won't want to turn back. Incidentally, if you're in the vicinity of Santa Monica, California, on Wednesday, January 7, you can catch the authors signing their book at 7:30 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, 1201 Third Street Promenade.
Fabulous Book!.......2003-12-17
My involvement with a project shot entirely with a mini digital video camera began in mid-September of this year. My new client was very pleased that I identified the format correctly within a couple minutes of viewing the first episode, but other than that I was clueless regarding the issues involved with shooting in the digital format. DIGITAL CINEMA changed that immediately. The authors have provided me with invaluable insights into the use of digital video, and I was able to read (study) their book whenever I had a few minutes available. Wasting no time, Chapter One provided a detailed chart comparing the expense of shooting on film compared to shooting on digital video. While I'm involved with a television show, many of the issues translate directly to my situation. The rest of the book continued to enlighten me in the most cost-effective manner possible, and I now feel completely comfortable and confident whenever a conversation turns to this topic. The postproduction discussions were most personally relevant, but everything else is also extremely helpful. For instance, I wasn't even thinking in terms of digital video being a series of "ones and zeroes" instead of true video, but I'm aware of such issues - both large and small - now thanks to this book. I thank the authors for their work, and recommend it to all.
Speilberg, Move Over.......2003-12-03
If Speilberg could start his career with a Super-8 camera, I can only imagine the amazing results that readers of DIGITAL CINEMA can accomplish with their digital cameras after reading this book! Taylor & Hsu not only discuss the decade-old issue of "digital vs. 35mm", they provide helpful comparisons, valuable resources, and look at digital filmmaking from all sides, including story concept, realistic limitations, advice on actual shooting, how to keep costs down, and marketing your finished product. Concise, informative and easy-to-understand!

Very cute book.......2001-10-20
I thought that this book was great. We checked it out from the library and my six year old son has chosen the teddy bear party. He was not too thrilled with the bowls of porage cakes, but all the other ideas are great and really get the kids involved.

Great Book!.......1999-12-26
This is a great book. I only got it yesterday, but it has lots of wonderful ideas. Although this is really a kids do it yourself book, it can also be used by parents, or party planners like myself. It has a pile of themes, and each one includes invitations party hats, crafts decoration, favor and games. Most of the party hats, favors and games are those you can make from paper and other things around the house. Most of the crafts can be used as games, and many can also be used as favors. I always like Kathy Ross's books, but this one was GREAT!

Customer Reviews:
Too much "renter" not enough "expenses" space...could be improved.......2007-09-21
I bought this book along with "How to rent Vacation properties by Owner".....THAT book is great, but for me, I was hoping for a better organizer. My main disappointment is simply not enough pages for expenses, but like over 50 pages, (thats over 200 renters) for your renters. Perhaps that is OK for those who rent nightly or weekly, but for me, who rent my vacation home for one month minimum, and usually for 3 month at a time, this was off balance.
I have many expenses that I need to keep track of, utilities, mowing, cleaning,etc,etc......for me, I need WAY more then the 6 pages they give for expenses.....I would think any owner would. Pockets and tabs would have been nice, but the main thing is it needs WAY more pages for expenses.....6 pages is not enough.
World Ventures, Dream Trips, Vacations.......2007-03-01
This book was very thorough and easy to read. If you're looking for a dream vacation also check out, "World Ventures, Wayne Nugent".
Must-have for anyone renting "by owner".......2007-01-16
This organizer, along with it's companion book "How to Rent Vacation Properties By Owner" are indispensible. I used to rent my vacation home through an agency. Last year they got me 2 rentals for the entire winter season for my ski home! Plus they took almost 30% for commissions! Thanks to these 2 books I'm doing the renting myself, and I couldn't be happier! I've had every weekend booked so far this season. And I've already earned enough to cover 80% of my expenses for my home for the entire year. My home pays for itself thanks to Christine's books, and yours can too, with a little effort! Don't waste any more money on an agency - do it yourself with these ingenious books.
Vacation rental Organizer.......2007-01-04
I do think that she could have explained how to organize it in a clearer
manner.
Also, the the examples in the explanation page are not in large enough print.
I do use it but I need another book to put my leases and calendars.
It could use "at a glance" monthly and yearly calendar
This Book Got Me On Track!.......2006-05-17
First I bought "How to Rent Vacation Properties By Owner". This gave me the confidence to self-manage our own beach house. The rental organizer was just what I needed to keep track of the various stages of the life of a rental period from inquiry to deposit return. The only thing I have added is an item under check list for "changed availability calendar". This book goes everywhere with me.
