5 out of 5 stars more quality from hardy marks publications.......2000-07-05

do you think you are serious about tattooing? consider yourself a bit of an expert on it? and you don't have this book? (not even any of the other tattootime issues?) then re-think and re-consider! anyone serious about tattooing, its backgrounds, its history should have this book. and all the other four issues. they are all out on hardy marks publications; the publishing company owned and run by don ed hardy. whom you should know.

this volume is entitled "music and sea tattoos" and covers lots of topics!

origins of sea/water tattoos in the pacific (by dan thomé!), sailors and their tattooing tradition (background and motifs), a photograph essay covering different "mermaid" tattoos, another one covering "pirate" tattoos, an interview with the innovating tattoo artist pinky yun (one of the first asian tattoo artists that worked in the states), the traditional "rock of ages" tattoo (historical background, variations on it by different artists), sea and water tattoos in japan, the japanese tattoo revolution amongst the young japanese, punk rock tattoos, tattoos and music. plus profiles on tattoo greats greg irons, leo zulueta, doc webb and bob roberts.

one of the things i like best about tattootime 3 is the number of photographs. there are so many of them! and all of very good quality, showing good quality work.

as in most other "tattootime" issues there are "suggested further reading" listings at the end of each article/chapter. i love those, but dislike them because they tell me about more and more interesting books i should still buy (and study!).

        Book Description

In 1562, François Deserps published a book titled (in English translation) "A Collection of the various styles of clothing which are presently worn in countries of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the savage islands, all realistically depicted." Based on information Deserps claimed to have received from travelers about the garments worn by people from distant lands, this collection has been called the earliest book published in France on ethnography and costume. It was originally intended to be read by children, specifically the eight-year-old Henry of Navarre, the future King Henry IV. In it, clerics, aristocrats, soldiers, peasants, men, women, and even a few monsters are pictured in 121 woodcut illustrations, each accompanied by four lines of verse describing some aspect of the person or clothing portrayed.

This beautifully produced facsimile edition includes full-color illustrations, translations of the verses and the original introductory material by Sara Shannon, and an introduction by Carol Urness.

François Deserps lived in Paris in the mid-sixteenth century. He was involved in the book trade, as a bookseller as well as a writer.

Sara Shannon has studied medieval history at the University of Minnesota, the Sorbonne, and Columbia University.

5 out of 5 stars Gruesome, but worth it........2006-04-17

I own Fist of the North Star Master's Editions issues 1,2,3, and 7.

True, FotNS is very gruesome, and that fact is only emphasized by a visual media as comics. However, from what I can see, there is an overriding theme in all of Ken, the main character's, interactions with the evildoers and bandits he encounters, and that is: justice for the wicked.

I don't know fully the whole story yet, however, dare I say, it reminds me of a graphically intensive version of America's "Superman". Ken is a good-hearted, gentle man (something the world needs more of!) with phenomenally deadly powers in a dangerous and dog-eat-dog world.

Ken selflessly puts himself in situations to rescue women and children, and right wrongs. The gore and violence should be secondary to this fact. The complete justice dished out to villans is the machine behind the obvious violence you're going to see in these comics.

The artwork is beautiful and intense, and I wish more imported manga and other drawn artwork could match the very large, colorful pages of this edition of FotNS.

I'm female, so shonen manga isn't just for guys. :) I have greatly enjoyed what I've read of FotNS so far. I look forward to collecting all Master's Editions. Fist of the North Star is an anime/manga CLASSIC, and the Master's Editions are well worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars great comic mangas in Japanese history absolutely.......2005-03-10

I am not a reader who has read many Japanese comics, however in such condition even, a little great comics in my history exist. One of them is this, Fist Of The North Star (Japanese title, Hokuto No Ken) published at the middle of 80'. As I watch the numbers of the reviewers, I think that the mangas are not famous than (Akira by Katsuhiro Ootomo) or (Naushika valley of the wind by Hayao Miyazaki). There are the comments of many reviewers in latter two mangas lists. But in my opinion, the contents of Fist Of The North Star (story, graphic, character and so on) will be never inferior to such mangas, may be splendid rather than. If such different popularity may be caused by the culture difference between Japan and U.S.A. But if the cause is just what foreigners have had no the chance that read Fist Of The North Star, it is very regrettable. At any cost, I wish that many people read the mangas.

As I wrote already, this manga was published at the mid of 80' by Syounen Jump, the majorest weekly magazine for boys on those days and even now. But this mangas have great contents that adults can read fully as some reviewers wrote already. Certainly, there are the violence scenes in this manga. That may be a scene that can not avoid for the theme of the survivor's story after nuclear wars (similar with Akira on such theme). In such mean, that may not be recommended comics in U.S.A that have strict customs rather than Japan on the violence drawing of boys comics. But this manga is never just such violence comics, off course the main character Kenshirou is great nice guy with tender character who can beat many cruel enemies and help many injured old men, girls etc. Or Toki who can cure many sick or injured people is a respectable man too. But greater points in the manga exist in other aspects, that is, such cruel characters even like Raou; Rei etc have the hidden nice characters. For instance, in their boy-age scenes, they brushed their Kenpou techniques with honest mind, and when such characters with cruel mind was dying by the battle for Kenshirou, they showed the true mind that they had once in boy-age, then true bond between Kenshirou and such characters happened ironically. That will be just great friendship of men.

Anyway, this manga will have the values that people over the world read.

Thank you for reading poor English

        2 out of 5 stars Mediocre manga and a half-assed coloring job.......2005-01-18

Fist of the North Star is considered a "classic" in the shounen genre and it's an ok read, but there's little more than lame fights (which take up 90% of the content). Even if the cover says "for mature readers", the only 'mature' feature is the gore. The storyline and dialogue are just as corny and childish as any other shounen for 12 year-olds, if not more.
As about the hyped "full color presentation", it is mediocre at best and only ruins the original black & white art. There's the occasional good panel but most of it is just ugly rushed CG. The backgrounds are especially bad.
I don't recommend buying this unless you don't get turned off by stupid plot and dialogue, repetitive fights, and would pay the extra cash for a half-assed coloring job.

5 out of 5 stars Great manga, Great value........2004-01-04

When you get this manga in the mail.... The manga is pretty big, and it is in FULL color. There is also a nice jacket on it. They really spent some time on mastering this manga. They did a terrific job.

The manga revolves around Ken fighting Shin mostly. Then the aftermath as Ken fights more random people. Right when it starts off the fighting begins. They did a great job with it as we see a lighter side of Shin.

I really enjoyed this manga. There is a lot more fighting compared to volume 1 I would say. There are also some more great death moves. Enjoy.

        5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2003-10-18

Fist of the Nort Star is one of the greatest manga in Japanese history. And now Raijin has brought it to the USA in perfect form.

FOTNS Master Edition is just that. Every page is in brand new full color, supervised by creator Hara Tetsuo himself (yay), the color is nothing short of stunning, it looks like you're reading an anime movie. The paper is just about photo quality stuff, very thick and glossy, the printing job is flawless, laserjet printing all the way. The book also comes with an outer dust jacket of very high quality.

As for the manga itself, all the original Japanese sound effects are untouched, it reads right-to-left, all attack names are still left in Japanese romanji, so Kenshiro doesn't yell "Thousand-Fist Attack!!", he says it in Japanese romanji, (for example "HOKUTO DAIZENKEN!!") and it's translated into english on the page footnotes.

And the most important of all, this is in large comic book format, 7x10, not the puny 5x7 format the cheapie 7.95 Tokyopop and Viz mangas are in.

I was stunned at the quality when I got this book, this should be the standard all manga is brought to the USA in.

Raijin will be releasing all 27 volumes here, and I can't wait to get them all.

Charming, revealing, fascinating — and hilarious — Spielberg, Truffaut and Me is simply one of the great movie memoirs, an instant classic which will appeal to anyone who's ever wondered what it's like on the inside of the Hollywood magic machine…

In 1976, actor Bob Balaban found himself working with two of the most gifted filmmakers of all time: the legendary French director François Truffaut and Steven Spielberg, who had cast his hero Truffaut alongside Balaban in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Balaban's hugely entertaining on-set diary reveals just what it's really like making a Hollywood blockbuster.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie book.......2004-12-08

This is one of the best making-of-a-movie book I've ever read, and I read a lot of them. It's not dishy/gossipy, just really entertaining and funny as hell. You get an idea about the insanity involved in making a movie. In that respect, the book reminded me a lot of Truffaut's movie, Day for Night. It's a great read for anyone interested in movies, or for anyone who wants a good laugh.

5 out of 5 stars What a great look at a great movie!.......2003-05-26

This is a really interesting behind the scenes look at the making of CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND. The perspective is from that of Bob Balaban, the actor who played the Translator/Cartographer teamed with Francois Truffaut. The anecdotes are fun and interesting, a look at what it was like to hang out and work with two of the greatest directors in history, one at the beginning of his career, still young and kind of idealistic, the other being a master at the height of his talents, acting for the first time. If you love CE3K, Speilberg, Truffaut or have a thing about guys who are constantly mistaken for Richard Dreyfuss (some of the funniest stuff in the book, this is a great read) It isn't really a dirt dishing tell all, it is more of sweet memories of the struggles involved in making a groundbreaking piece of cinema.

Why accidental? Rock music, as Chuck Eddy sees it, goes straight downhill the minute it aspires to art (or even intelligence). Its monuments tend to be one-offs, afterthoughts, B-sides--in short, accidents. As the author puts it: "Rock seems to work best when greedy kids on the make, ones who don't mind looking like they're on the make, contemptible bastards who'll serve up any tossed-off perfunctory garbage their audience will swallow, inadvertently let their humanness leak out." This is probably the most realistic book of rock aesthetics you'll ever encounter. Also the most unsystematic, and the funniest, right down to the photo captions. (Personal favorite: "Eldra DeBarge and Bo Diddley: plaid to the (herring?) bone." It's better with the picture in front of you, though.)

        Book Description

History, jokebook, buying guide, book of lists, and treatise all rolled into one, The Accidental Evolution of Rock'n'Roll is most of all a joyride through the wildest music ever made. Whether discussing Def Leppard or Nirvana, Vanilla Ice or Public Enemy, Donna Summer or Bob Dylan, Chuck Eddy is an unparalleled master at deciphering unknown tongues and disentangling musical accidents. In this lavishly and hilariously illustrated book, he reveals the roots of rap, disco, power ballads, bubblegum, suburban country, and noise-rock; why selling out is good and honesty is never what it seems; the similarities between disco and garage rock and between reggae and heavy metal; whether songs can ever really "mean" anything; what math rock has in common with amputation rock and orgasm rock; and much, much more. By eventually encompassing the whole wacky world of popular music, this book is destined to change it forever.

1 out of 5 stars Shoot the editor!.......2006-10-11

So this guy's name is Chuck Eddy, and a music fan he is. Now Chuck he likes to write, almost if not more than he likes music, so he decides that he's going to write a book, about music, since he's a music fan, at least as much if not less so than he likes to write. But screw those college level writing classes, those fools don't know jack about music, so he starts to write, and he writes and he writes and he writes, and sometimes he doesn't know what exactly is he's writing about, and proper sentence structure be damned. And Chuck he knows bands, yes he does, and he can tell you that this band did something similar to that band, and he can also tell you about classic rock and punk rock and hell, even a little bit about heavy metal, well not really ABOUT them but he can damn sure mention them in a sentence. So Chuck he name drops, and he name drops some more, and hell it's a book isn't, so he name drops some more, and while his chapters and paragraphs and sentences don't necessarily end where they start, well screw it because that's what rock and roll's about, you dig? You don't overthink it, and you don't plan it, you just go out and play, and so Chuck takes this philosophy, the philosophy of rock, the philosophy of life, and he writes and he writes until his fingers are damn well about to fall off, and pretty soon he decides to stop writing, because like every great song sung by some band, it's gotta end, y'know, so he gets it published and man oh man it was a great day. Just a rock'n'roll fan in a rock'n'roll world writing a rock'n'roll book, and man did it rock. And hey, he did it the rock'n'roll way, unplanned, just writing whatever came into his head at putting it down on paper, the unpolished thought nuggets, the accidental and misguided ramblings of the rock'n'roll fan to you, the rock'n'roll reader. Rock on!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time..........2005-02-03

The other negative reviews pretty much spell it out, why did I not listen to them. There are some critics that create heated debates as to the weight of their opinion (Bangs, Marcus, etc), but this guy is just bad. I think this book is made for teenagers who can't read more than a page or two without getting bored. I traded it in for a good book on Marvin Gaye, so the experience wasn't all bad.

1 out of 5 stars How could anyone possibly like this book?.......2002-04-17

This is the worst thing I have ever tried to read. I can't believe anyone would give this guy a book contract.

        1 out of 5 stars Carducci's antithesis.......2001-01-04

Reading the other reviews on this page, one might well be confused: Some complain about Chuck Eddy's weak grasp of his subject matter, others delight in the obscurity of his numerous references. So what is it?

Well, all of these reviews are accurate. Chuck slings names all over the place, and shows laudable contempt for genre classification (sure, he spends a lot of time on Debbie Gibson, but not everyone would compare her to, say, Von Lmo). But if you're actually going to him for information, you'll be disappointed, as there seem to be very few albums Chuck has actually LISTENED to. References abound, but are restricted to trite observations about song titles; in fact, he doesn't even make observations so much as group songs by some common word in their names. He doesn't seem to have any grasp of his subject matter because he doesn't seem to have grasped the notion that those plastic things inside album covers play music if you put them in a special machine.

Rock criticism has always been pretty grim, being dominated by hacks who prefer to deconstruct song lyrics than listen to the music. (Just look at the praise lavished on Bob Dylan's "poetics" over the years, qualified by blushing "admissions" that "he's really not a great singer": If only these people realized that Dylan's VOICE epitomizes the rock aesthetic, his stoner ramblings being mere frills!) Chuck Eddy, while relatively unpretentious, represents the absolute lowest form of this tendency.

        This book is truly abysmal.

3 out of 5 stars Good fun, but credibility glaringly missing........2000-09-23

Chuck: Maybe "Me and the boys are playing all night" means that the band Kiss are playing music.

He mentions that some of this book was written while sitting on the toilet bowl; unfortunately, it shows.

Tho I admire his honesty saying he only owned 4 albums in college, it painfully adds to my conclusion that he is hardly an authority on the subject and that there are lots of gaps in his knowledge. He actually admits that he had never heard any Tricky before, while dissing stupid critics who praise him. But if he never heard any Tricky, then he never heard any of Massive Attack, arguably creators of the best cd of the 90's.

Here is a clue: 11 pages talk about Debbie Gibson, but there is only one mention of the Marshall Tucker Band, 3 mentions of Creedence. So if he can flip off comments about brain-dead hippies, what the hell does he think he is?

Totally tasteless is the way he raps about his own ideations about suicide while knocking Kurt Cobain. Unbelieveable.

Positive side: Not many people are going to know who the Louvin Brothers or Andrea True are. This book is really packed with trivia, so rocknroll fanatics should really enjoy the memoribilia. And chapters about players who are missing various appendages are fascinating for anyone interested in this arcana.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best I found.......2007-01-09

An excellent book for anyone considering starting their own business. It reads like a book, and has projects like a workbook. Do yourself a favor- do NOT skip through the project sections. Buy yourself a notebook, and do each section in order and as instructed, b/c quite frankly- if you can't do that, then you probably lack the self discipline to succeed at your own business.
I must have checked out every book in my local library when I was thinking about starting my own business, and I read them all. When I checked out this one, however, I immediately went to the Amazon site and ordered my own copy to keep.
Oh, and my business is doing quite well, thank you. :)

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for entrepreneurs.......2004-12-03

The vast majority of books on business and entrepreneurship focus heavily on theory and case study, and lack practical, easy-to-follow steps to help you get started. This book helps you to identify what you're passionate about, and how to go about creating a dream business around whatever it is that you enjoy.

Romanus takes his years of experience working with literally hundreds of individuals and companies and boils it down to the essentials.

This isn't your average business book - it is a series of worksheets and activities to help you define, refine, and act. If you've never owned a business, but have always dreamed of breaking out on your own - this book is for you. If you've been in a startup before, and are thinking about trying it again regardless of your previous success, you'll still find a lot of helpful information to help you avoid the mistakes and pitfalls of too many startups.

Also -- if you get a chance, I highly recommend attending one of Romanus' events. He is energetic and provides great information. Its not just a rah-rah, motivational session -- you'll find it very valuable.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough but product-focused.......2004-03-24

This book is exceptionally thorough; detailed and practical, with tons of worksheets and exercises to perform. However, it seems very focused on product-based business, versus service businesses. The author does include service businesses in his examples, but the exercises and worksheets seem to me to be very helpful for those people providing an actual product, with suppliers and vendors and product margins and the like. Overall a recommended book, especially if you're looking for an exceptionally detailed blueprint for moving from idea to execution.
