I was expecting something better.......2002-04-26
The Fashion Design ideas here are for a very extravagant type of people.
A Big Disappointment.......2001-11-13
I expected more info on how to put your portfolio or presentation boards together. This book is full of pictures and seemed more of a display item. If you are looking to find out more on how to create presentation boards or portfolio's, this isn't the book you should look for.
wrong book cover!.......2001-11-08
Dear Editor,
Just an FYI: the jpg book cover you have here is different book from the one you are promoting by Janet Boyes. Please look closely and you'll see : )

A Really Good Start.......2000-05-18
This is a really good book for beginners, hoping to take up Fashion Design as a hobby or proffession. Although it doesn't take the place of a good course or class, it is great for home use, and it has plenty of clear, easy to interpret illustrations. Filled with projects and excersises that help your skill grow, I think that this is a really good book for anyone interested in Fashion Design.

Book Description
Set in 50 B.C., these hysterical historical tales follow the adventures of Asterix and his pals in the days of the Roman Empire. Normally, he’s concerned about protecting his town from the legionnaires (with the help of a magic potion), but here something else is on his mind: his surprise birthday party! Meanwhile, two old friends are about to turn up again...and they’re up to something interesting. “Great for leading high-school students into discussion of history and literary devices.”—Booklist

Not bad........2007-05-12
Albert Uderzo, Asterix and the Actress (Dargaud, 2001)
Caesar's newest plan to conquer the indomitable Gaulish village: get an actress to impersonate Panacea, with whom Obelix is in love. It doesn't help matters that the boys' mothers are in town and trying to convince the two of them to get married (to women, not to each other). The fact that Panacea is already married doesn't seem to cross anyone's mind (except that of Tragicomix, her husband). This one was definitely a breath of fresh air after Asterix and the Secret Weapon and Asterix and the Falling Sky (yes, I'm reading them out of order). ***
Golden Caesar.......2007-03-06
Missed "Asterix and the Actress" when it came out. Pretty surprised reading it. Enjoyed it for the humour, the introduction of new characters & the exploration of Goscinny-era ones.
Asterix #31 (2001)
Asterix and Obelix are after the village folk, they've gone missing. Pompey is after Obelix, he's got Pompey's helmet. Julius Caesar is after Pompey, he can't stand rebellion in his empire. No girls are after Asterix and Obelix, though their Mums preferred if there were.
Midst of this comes Panacea. She's got memory loss & only can remember Obelix...
Gotten a low ranking so far. Sort of see why. Seems to work best as a stand alone story, set aside from the series, but knowledge of the past of the series is needed for gags & such. That's the trouble, I think. Fans who love Goscinny's humour from the 1960-70s seem to be the one's it's aimed at, seems so from the references, yet the humour is sparser & not quite the sort Goscinny fans enjoy. Reminds me more of Beano & of the movie "Asterix & Obelix Versus Caesar" (1999)
Asterix and the Actress.......2006-02-26
This book was written by the illustrator of the Asterix books and not the original author (who died).
He draws beautifully but his writing skills are mediocre.
Not the best one, but still enjoyable.......2003-12-09
As a child, I read all of the "classic" Asterix books in Swedish. As an adult living in the U.S., I am reading them again to my children, but this time in English. In addition, this time I am also reading the new ones, like this one, and I am still enjoying it.
My kids asked me to read this one once, and did not ask for it again after that. So I guess that is a sign it is not the best one. I can see why, the story line is not as intriguing as usual, a little hard to believe, and a little bit non-Asterix. The kids do not care for pretty cartoon women and love stories, so that should be avoided. However it was still enjoyable and funny, and worth buying and reading, just do not let this one be your first Asterix.
I find that children the age 5-13 usually really enjoy these books, not just mine. These comic books are a great way to teach children ancient history. Naturally, the adult needs to help with the differentiation between fiction and history. From these books, my kids have learned about the Roman Empire, the ancient Greeks, the Vikings, the Goths, the Phoenicians, ancient Gaul, ancient Egypt, and the ancient Mediterranean world in general.
A BIG disappointment!.......2003-04-30
I have been an avid Asterix fan almost ALL my life, I have collected pretty much all the Asterix adventures and still love and read them ALL. I think they are ALL brilliant, this is simply NOT Asterix. When I found out there was a new Asterix out there I was very excited, I was reading the other reviews and thought well just how bad can it be, this is Asterix after all... let me tell you, if you are a big fan and familiar with earlier Asterix books, do NOT buy this! It IS THAT bad! I do NOT know what these people who gave it good reviews are on about, Uderzo died a while back and Goscinny has produced some excellent Asterix since, it is not a sudden transition! Call a spade a spade, if you are over ten years old, this is just not worth it, TRUST ME!

one of those books that everyone reads..........2007-01-10
I bought this for my precocious 12 year old for Christmas, but over the following week, everyone in the family picked up this book and read it. Easy, light reading; intended to be humorous, but not sarcastic. It is organized by category. Lots of quips. A few gems. It would be a great book for pre-teens; teens and adults, although teens and pre-teens will not know all of the people quoted. It would also be good for physician waiting rooms, or guest bathroom reading material.
Fun for the smart .......2005-04-27
That rare and wonderful thing---a book the whole family can read together, read to each other, and laugh for days. It's become my favorite gift for everyone.

Yvonne Rainer: Radical Juxtapositions 1961-2002
ASIN: 0801860792 |
Book Description
Yvonne Rainer is one of the most important feminist, avant-garde filmmakers working today. She began her career as a dancer and choreographer, and was one of the founders of hte Judson Dance Theater. Since the mid-1970s, however, she has worked almost entirely in film and here works in that medium have been the subject of more than a dozen retrospectives, the most recent of which was at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. She has been honored with honorary degrees from art schools and with fellowships from the Guggenheim and MacArthur foundations.
Her works have unblinkingly explored such issues as menopause, breast cancer, lesbianism, sexual dissatisfaction,a nd political violence against women. Increasingly, they have moved beyond the festiva circuit to premiere in art theaters in the United States as well as overseas. Her most recent feature-length film, Murder and Murder (the script of which is included in this volume), opened in New York last month.

Rough Guide to DnB-Overview.......2002-11-06
Good reading, especially if you're a junglist, and got some spare time on your hands. Contains good info on the biggest names in the scene (the british ones). Does include downtempo and trip hop etc. however, so dont be surprised to run into names such as Dj Shadow and Thievery Corporation, towards the end. Also the book names almost each artists' biggest anthems, so why not use these highlighted tracks for your next burned compilation?
Good basic look @ D&B.......2001-06-30
Despite the not always perfect genre listings for the artists in this book, it still porvides most all the biographical info that any normal person would want for Drum N Bass and Breakbeat artists and groups, worth the small price.
Some glaring mistakes.......2000-06-17
I think this book is good, since there are few other books about the subject of drum and bass, there are some glaring mistakes. For some reason they put Air (the French duo) in the drum and bass section and not the Trip-hop, Lounge, Big Beat area. Air clearly falls into the downtempo catagory. Second, in one review they noted that the Exploited wrote the song "City Baby Attacked by Rats" (it's an old hardcore punk rock tune) but it was GBH who did that tune. Bad mistake for a music historian. It also mimics Simon Reynolds book "Ecstasy Generation" too much. The opinions seem to be the same and the way Rough Guide is written also shadows Reynold's book. In addition, there aren't any keys to the symbols for CD or vinyl. I had to figure it out myself. And...some of the recommendations aren't the best samples of the artists' work. Kinda poor way to guide someone through a genre many find confusing. But, like I said, there aren't many more books about D&B out there.
Very rough guide........2000-01-03
The Rough Guide to Drum and Bass is a fairly decent book. Flipping through the pages you see a lot of leading names in the scene. In it, you can find some of the people who started the genere. The only thing I was disappointed about in this book was the fact that it's so new and it left out major names like Bad Company, Calyx, Dieselboy, and more. Hopefully there will be another book covering these names and more. Overall, this book was quite informative.
