The world knows Georgia O'Keeffe for her monumental paintings of flowers, shells, and sun-drenched New Mexico landscapes. She also worked on a smaller scale in watercolor, pastels, and charcoal, experimenting with themes and ideas. Fifty-five of her drawings are illustrated in O'Keeffe on Paper, which accompanies an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art in Washington and the O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. The images work on several levels: viewing what at first seem brightly colored, jewel-like abstractions, with titles such as Pond in the Woods and Portrait of Paul Strand, we suddenly become aware of more complex, realistic forms. Witty and accessible, O'Keeffe's drawings remind us to recognize significance and beauty in our daily surroundings. The book's supporting essays are well written and useful. The first, which places O'Keeffe in the context of her teachers and colleagues, is an excellent survey of the early-20th-century American avant-garde; the second explores the evolution of O'Keeffe's ideas, developing her youthful question, "If one can only reproduce nature, and always with less beauty than the original, why paint at all?" The final essay is a detailed analysis of the materials she used. An extra dimension is given by photographs of O'Keeffe at work and some illuminating pictures by artists who influenced her. Reflecting a statement by the critic John Canaday quoted early in the book--"In a drawing artists give us at full strength, but with minimum elaboration, the essence of whatever they have to say"--the images in O'Keeffe on Paper are deceptively simple but very satisfying. --John Stevenson

Book Description

A National Gallery of Art Publication Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986), one of the most innovative and renowned of all American artists, made works on paper throughout her long career. More than 50 of her most stunning watercolors, charcoals, and pastels are presented in this volume, the catalogue of an exhibition that opens in April 2000 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and travels in July to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe.

Images dating from 1915 through 1962 reveal O'Keeffe's unique imagination and technical virtuosity and chart the development of her personal abstract vision. Essays by well-known scholars address the significance of the works on paper to O'Keeffe's art as a whole; examine the importance of her choice of materials in the development of her aesthetic; and place O'Keeffe's works on paper in the context of her American modernist contemporaries. 80 illustrations, 60 in full color, 192 pages, 81_4 x 103_4" RUTH E. 5 out of 5 stars A wonderful change........2000-09-27

This book is outstanding. It provides the reader, or viewer, with the opportunity to enjoy and study many of O'Keeffe's works, in watercolor, pastels, and charcoal drawings. I was very satisfied with my choice. I searched and searched for a book that contained works other than her standard oils and watercolors, that have been so available in other books for years. As an art student, this one fits the bill as a great book to study one of my favorite artists and her varied use of techniques and mediums. Who else could make an avocado look so asthetically wonderful. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. You won't be disappointed.

Book Description

This classic ground-breaking volume--the first to consider Georgia O'Keeffe's works on paper--explores the medium of watercolor, charcoal, pencil, and pastel. O'Keeffe's earliest mature works, which led to her first New York exhibitions and initial acclaim, were works on paper. These works can be viewed in the larger context of O'Keeffe's career as an artist. They move from stylized, flat patterning of the early charcoals through the rhapsodic organic forms and fresh uses of color in the water colors to the tighter, more focused compositions of the later pastels, charcoals, and pencil drawings. Finally, the works on paper of the 1960s and 1970s are characterized by an extreme simplification and almost decorative flatness.

3 out of 5 stars minor works by a major artist.......2003-08-22

Art critic E.M. Benson is quoted in the introduction of this book saying "I never saw an O'Keeffe that reminded me of anything but O'Keeffe", and the pieces selected for this book, though most of them are minor, early works, are an indication of how her talent would develop, with her unique vision and terrific sense of color.
As is stated in Barbara Haskell's text, they "provide valuable insight into the origins of her vocabulary and basic approach to art".

The illustrations include eleven watercolors reproduced in black and white, from 1916-1934, a monotype from 1917, twentyfour color plates of watercolors from 1915-1922, and ten pieces from later years, mostly pastels and drawings, from 1925-1977.
With good quality paper and fine color reproduction in a semi-gloss finish, this is recommended for art students, as it is always interesting to see the promise of early works, and die-hard O'Keefe fans.

Here is a further adventure based on the real-life “sword saint” Miyamoto Musashi. In this tale, Takezo escapes from the authorities and finds a hiding spot in a nearby forest. A posse of villagers is rounded up and the manhunt for Takezo begins. Tsujikaze Kohei, brother of the bandit Tenma, joins the search, finds Takezo, and challenges him to a sword fight. Kohei is so impressed by the swordsmanship of his young opponent that he later saves Takezo's life.

                    4 out of 5 stars A manga for a legend.......2007-01-04

Takehiko Inoue continues on the same high level with this episode of the life of Musashi. Althoug it tends to be a little to long to tell the life of one of his main contenders(7 volumes). For as much interesting as Sasaki Kojiro's life could be, this is a story about Musashi. That's why I'm not giving a five star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than the First.......2006-09-23

Vagabond is about the journey of Takezo, a young man, future master swordsman, who is in search of purpose and meaning to his life. In the first book he thinks its to become the best swordsman by challenging and defeating the best in the world. Having experienced disillusionment about people, he meets a monk (You'll love this guy) who strives to teach Takezo the value of a person, beginning with the youth. Book 2 gives us more of Takezo's background as he desends into a bestial killing machine. Can the monk help Takezo save himself? No alone.

If you like Manga that does not romanticizes war or swordsman, Vagabond should peak your interest. The storytelling is excellent in the drawings, more so than the text. I would rank such adept skill in the same arena as Lone Wolf and Cub. LWC is the standard for balancing poetic story telling and showing the hardcore grit of life as a swordsman. The Vagabond sereis starts with a youth, a teen, not a man with a child. So Takezo maturity is not yet there. What drives him to succeed and overcome his past makes this series promising. The characters show a range of emotions in this manga, and the situations they deal with does an excellent job of targeting a mature audience. Takezo struggle for "his" truth becomes ours to learn from his journey about becoming complete.

Read each book like a wine, one delicious sip at a time, enjoy the flavors.

                    5 out of 5 stars A manga reader.......2003-03-21

Vagabond is one of the few stories I have read that make me sweat with anticipation before flipping to the next page. The action becomes so intense you will feel bad you're flipping through the pages and missing the superb artwork in you're haste to discover the outcome of the last few pages. Overall the action is some of the best I have seen in the manga format.

A powerful story of one man's quest to become "invincible under the sun", Miyamoto Musashi drifts through the world questioning his one principle: his strength. A raging beast in battle, Musashi, only knows what it is to fight but gradually learns of the world beyond strength, blood and death throughout the course of his duels. Some fights take up entire volumes but they are well worth it.

The one negative aspect of Vagabond would have to be that not all the volumes are translated yet, and the reader might have to wait for the next volume to come out. Maybe the age-old story of "the quest" might seem cliché to some readers but if you can stomach it, Vagabond does its take on Musashi's journey in swordsmanship incredibly well.

I am not a Samurai buff, or even a big action fan but Vagabond's has me sold. I have read most (no lie) of the English translated manga you can find in America and easily place Vagabond right up there with Nausicaa, Maison Ikkou, GTO, Akira and Ghost in the Shell. I believe that all types of comic readers can appreciate Vagabond although shojo manga (girls comics) readers might be a little put off by all the blood and death.

                    A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Follows the book! OUTSTANDING!!!.......2002-08-14

I just found out about these titles, bought and read them before I could throw out the box they came in. Being a martial artist and student of Iaido (Japanese sword drawing), I am very Familiar with the Musashi story. Yet these books (vol I & II ) are told from a fresh perspective that keeps you tuned in. I can't wait for the rest of the series to follow.
The artwork alone makes these books worth buying.

Also worth a look are the Lone Wolf and Cub Series...

                      Book Description

An affectionate homage to the British tradition of tea-drinking and to the greatest tea biscuits of all time, from the Custard Cream to the Pink Wafer.

Put a cup of tea in your hand, and what else can you do but sit down? This new book celebrates that most British of life's cornerstones: the tea break. There is, however, another element to this ritual that is a must: biscuits. As Nicey so rightly points out, a cup of tea without a biscuit is a missed opportunity. Finding the right biscuit for the right occasion is as much an art as it is a science, and it is a task that Nicey has selflessly worked on for most of his tea-drinking life. From dunking to the Digestive, the Iced Gem to the Garibaldi, everything you'll ever need to know about British biscuits is in this book, and quite a lot more besides. So go on. Put the kettle on, take a weight off, and enjoy.

Loved this book. Nicey has a wonderful, witty tone and covers the essentials to British tea drinking and biscuit dunking. Wonderful review of the various biscuits with photos, good guide for those who are new to the art of biscuit buying. Wifey manages to keep everything on topic.

                      5 out of 5 stars Perfect Read...again...and again...and again..........2006-09-10

It has quickly become one of my favorite books. I happen to be a tea fanatic, so obviously a book about tea and biscuits would suit me just fine. However, I am also quite particular about the books I adore, and this one fits the bill. Well written by an obviously intelligent human being, but also extremely witty and informative. I have purchased a copy for my adult brit-loving/tea-loving daughter. She wanted to borrow my copy, but there is no way I am letting it go! Buy it...devour it...come back for more. You won't be sorry.

This book contains everything you need to know about tea and biscuits when visiting Britain. Never again have the Brits looking down at you in disgust when you don't know the proper protocol for afternoon tea.

Buy it. Read it on the plane on the way over. Never look out of place again at those important business meetings.

I would hate for anyone to miss out on this book because of a bad review so I'll post my own.
All of the FastTrack drum books are well written and make it easy to learn how to play grooves, fills, and complete songs. If you want to hear the drums more clearly, just pan to the right! They will not be "drowned out" by the rest of the band.
The notated parts for these songs fit the music really well and you will be grooving right along with the CD. One of the big hurdles on any instrument is being able to play complete songs from beginning to end. You will get a sense of accomplishment as you learn these arrangements, and that will keep you coming back to practice more.
                          :) Sarah

This book is a terrible waste of money. I'm glad that I got it for a Christmas present and didn't waste my own money on it. The biggest problem I have with this book is the CD that comes with it. I thought that the Cd would just be the drum tracks to the songs and nothing else, which would have helped me a great deal in playing. But on every track there is a whole band playing and even worse is that there is a blaring saxophone that plays the lead singer's part and drowns out all the other instruments. I eventually put on the actual Elvis recording of Jailhouse rock and I think that its actually easier to hear the drums on the original recordings of the songs than on the CD that comes with this book. The other problem I have with this book is the songs it covers, for the most part they are totally boring, i hope someday this company decides to release a drum book of quality music like Good Charlotte or the Ataris, because their drum tracks are much more exciting than these ones. All in all, I would not suggest this book to anyone. The sheet music is alright by itself, but I really need to hear it being played so that I know how it should be played. If you can read music really well then this book might be alright for you otherwise, don't bother. Peace :)

5 out of 5 stars Still one of the best places to start!!!.......1999-03-07

This was the second book I bought on programming using Microsoft's DirectX SDK. I researched all the other books on the market before I bought it, and by reading this book I learned everything I needed to know about DirectDraw, DirectInput, DirectSound & DirectPlay

This book provides many example games, after reading this book you'll have a better understanding of 2d game engines like those found in Rayman, Myst and Command & Conquer.

Another big plus is the author's explaination on how to use Binary Search Trees and Linked List and the sample code provided on how to apply these to creating/destoying objects/entities in games.

If you want to learn how to program games for Windows using DirectX you either go with this book or Andre LaMothe's Windows Game Programming for Dummies.

Go with the later if you're a complete newbie. Or (better yet), buy them both.

2 out of 5 stars Not so hot.......1999-02-27

I skipped a couple newer DX books and bought this one as I'd heard many good things about it. Unfortunately I'm not very pleased. Although all of the code is still relevant to newer versions of directX, the level of explanation is very light. On the plus side, there is a lot of code, but one is simply left to figure out many important details. Basic/summarizied descriptions appear all over the place which even a non-programmer might understand (To load a DIB, first, read the header, then... etc), but many of the "nitty-gritty" details are either completely skipped or only given a very cursory examination. Overall, it's not worthless, but there has to be something better.

2 out of 5 stars The author/editor should spent more time revising the book........1998-10-30

The book has good information about how to use DirectX for developing games. However, there are lots of problems either related to the text or related to the example programs. (The latter being the worst). The example codes are a) not well commented, b) most of them do not run as they suppose to; c) the programmer (who is not the author) defines functions (methods) never used in the main program; etc. This book can be useful for someone interested in developing games, but be aware that you will need to rewrite most of the code again (after you understand what the original code was trying to do, which will take a lot of your time). Also be aware that the author does not reply e-mails, what is really sad. I have been in contact with authors of other books and this connection between author-user is a very healthy thing to have. Normally both have something to learn from this connection.

In the day & age where everybody wants to create the next QUAKE it's nice to see a book that's main focus is on 2d and multiplayer RPG development with direct X. Every book I have purchased in the past has an entire 4 chapter section dedicated to DIRECT 3D and maybe a chapter or so for 2d programming with direct draw. So what's the beginner to do? I mean if you can't create a 2d game what chance do you have of creating a 3d game? Well with the help of this book you'll learn all the fundamentals of game programming as well as how to use some of the Direct X features. Yes the book only deals with Direct X 3 and the latest direct X version is 6 but any sample included on the CD can be compiled using the directX 6.0 sdk with out having to make any modifications. New features have been added to direct X but beginners need to learn the basics first and this book is the place to start

4 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners looking to do Games in Windows.......1998-03-13

Even though Directx will soon be up to version 6, Spells of Fury is still applicable to programming games in Windows. The book is ideally suited for someone trying to get into programming games in general plus doing them on Windows platform. I wouldn't bother using the source code on the CD. Be a trooper and write all of it out on your own. You'll find that you will learn more that way.

In Double Billing, author Cameron Stracher puts the legal profession on trial and finds it guilty of waste, fraud, and other offenses. Stracher has based his inside account on three punishing years as a young associate at a New York City law firm, given the fictional name Crowley and Cavanaugh. With everyone facing nearly impossible odds to become partner, there are no lawyers in love at Stracher's firm--only lawyers at war. The lifeblood at C & C is "the billable hour." Even a first-year associate costs clients $150 an hour. What's more, there's little desire to save money. "The longer C & C fought on behalf of a client, the more C & C was paid," he soon learns.

There is no literal double billing, but it comes close. Clients sometimes pay twice for virtually the same service--once by the associate and then again by the partners. Every associate's memo is revised by a partner, for example. Two corporate combatants often pay their respective attorneys outrageous fees to research and argue the same, narrow points of law. The outcome is rarely in doubt.

Stracher's young lawyers are ambivalent and cynical--there are no illusions in the courtrooms of Generation X. "Today, law students have nothing but doubts: about the nobility of their chosen profession, about their interest in it and about its interest in them," he writes. Say goodbye to the idealism of John Osborn's The Paper Chase. So much for the committed bunch in Scott Turow's One L. Double Billing is a great read if you're thinking of becoming a lawyer or if you work with lawyers. It will no doubt change the way you think about our system of justice. --Dan Ring

                            Book Description

By turns hilarious and horrifying, Double Billing is a clever and sobering expose of the legal profession. Writing with wit and wisdom, Cameron Stracher describes the grueling rite of passage of an associate at a major New York law firm. As Stracher describes, Harvard Law School may have taught him to think like a lawyer, but it was his experience as an associate that taught him to behave--or misbehave--like one. Double Billing is a biting glimpse into the world of corporate law from the perspective of the low man on the totem pole.

In Double Billing, Cameron Stracher reveals a shocking nonfiction account of the ordeal of a young associate at a major Wall Street law firm. Fresh out of Harvard Law School, Stracher landed a coveted position at a high-powered corporate law firm and thus began his grueling years as an associate, a dreaded rite of passage for every young attorney. Only about five percent survive long enough to achieve the Holy Grail of partnership in the firm.

As the author vividly describes, law school may teach you how to think like a lawyer, but it's being an associate that teaches you how to behave like one. Or misbehave. Stracher doesn't mince words about the duplicitous behavior and flagrant practices of many lawyers in his firm, which is one of the premier partnerships in America.

In a stylish and witty manner that has earned him comparison to an early Philip Roth, Stracher does for the legal profession what Michael Lewis's Liars' Poker did for the financial industry. The result is a tell-all glimpse into the cutthroat world of corporate law from the perspective of the low man on the totem pole.

                            4 out of 5 stars Glad I Didn't Choose Litigation.......2007-09-14

Double Billing is a fairly good representation of the life of a junior litigation associate in a large New York law firm. For all practical purposes, the firm described in the book may as well have been CS&M or S&C. I agree with some other reviewers that the title and subtitle for the book are a bit misleading, but the book is worth reading nonetheless for anyone interested in "BigLaw" and the money and prestige that come to the select few. Stracher shows that he is a talented writer in this entertaining tale and did a good job of portraying large firm life, the never-ending hours, the demanding partners and senior associates and the gradual loss of one's life and friends outside of work. Yet, despite knowing all of this, there are numbers of law school students ready to kill for a coveted summer associate position with one of these firms and the job offer at the end of the summer that usually accompanies it. Although I'm currently working in a New York law firm, the constant thought I had while reading this book was that I am glad I stayed away from litigation. I recommend this book for anyone interested in large law firm practice or civil litigation.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the time .......2007-07-08

I disagree with the reviewers who state that this book is a "must read" for anyone considering law school, lawyers, etc. The book could not hold my attention. Stracher likes to complain. He complains about is frustration about the doors a Harvard law degree opens yet boasts on the same page about his elation of getting in, and the opportunities that await. He can't write or hold the reader's attention. Skip this book, and pick up something better.

2 out of 5 stars Stracher's Complaints - All the Whining Without the Raw Liver .......2007-03-05

Stracher's book is a fairly boring whine-fest. He comes across as a silly young man, who went from college to law school without stopping to take the time to determine if law school was right for him. Then, after law school, off he immediately went to take a job as an associate at an enormous law firm, and was ultimately surprised to find himself miserable. Stracher's insights into the world of law are mundane and simple. It takes him three years to figure out he took the wrong job. He (and the reader) would have been much better served if he had engaged in some introspection prior to applying to law school, and again prior to taking a job, instead of thoughtlessly following a path, and then whining that he doesn't like where he has found himself.

4 out of 5 stars Real Life Lawyering.......2007-01-18

Some of the other reviewers have described this book at "exhilirating," but I didn't find much excitement or action in the book, rather it is a very accurate portrait of life as a young associate at a law firm, which is seldom exciting or interesting. Though the job promises a lot of money, prestige and future opportunity, it also demands a lot of unpleasant grunt work and very long hours. Stracher does a great job detailing his emotions throughout the time at the firm (and his initial decision to join the firm) as well as the tasks he was asked to perform on a day to day basis and in doing so provides a very honest example for people thinking of doing big law. The writing itself is sometimes a little too flowery, but the story does move along very well and is very insightful, so I would recommend it to anyone considering a career at a big firm or people who just want to see what a big firm is really like (as opposed to the depictions you usually see on tv or in John Grisham novels).

                            4 out of 5 stars Uncommon Honesty.......2006-07-25

Stracher debunks the lies told about 'big firm' practice throughout the whole of academia: namely, that the work is compensated at such a high rate because it is very intricate and demands the most talented lawyers in the field. Hopeful students are sacrificing their personal desires and passions on a daily basis in order to pursue this fabrication of a dream, and Stracher proves that there is no magical fulfillment waiting once the attractive offer of employment at a large, respected law firm is accepted. The illusion of nobility and purpose fades away, replaced by endless hours searching through thousands of documents in order to use the technical letter of the law in any way possible to advance nonsensical arguments.

Stracher does not overlook the possibility that a legal education can be used in public service or for the pursuit of more broadly humanitarian goals, but he does illustrate perfectly the allure of the superior salary offered by big-name law firms. Few students enter into the study of law with the purely materialist goal of maximizing their income; unfortunately, many are stripped of their idealism and find ways to lie to themselves in order to support their entry into the meaningless void so properly detailed within this book.

This is a tale of warning, a tale of cold reality as contrasted against dreams, and ultimately a story of survival and the forceful disconnection of oneself from the soulless machine of big law.
