Deeper than most,still understandable.......2004-08-16
I've checked this book out from the local library where I live twice now, and that's usually a sure sign that I need to purchase a copy. There is a wide series of topics covered here, Wile E. Coyote to Tin-Tin which is one of the reasons I believe it is different from most thesis about comics. Yes some of the titles covered you might not know of, but that allows the reader to investigate these books on thier own. If you enjoy learning about sequential art this book is recommended. Guess I better order my copy!

Book Description
CAPONE'S LAW. You can get a lot more done with a kind word and a gun than with a kind word alone.
LANCE'S LAW. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
MILLER'S LAW. The quality of food in restaurants is in inverse proportion to the number of signed celebrity photographs on the wall.
WALPOLE'S LAW. Every man has his price.
Unwritten Laws is a wonderfully entertaining treasury of more than five hundred rules, strategies, and ironical insights, with many amendments and corollaries, all associated with particular individuals.
Organized alphabetically, from Lady Astor ("All women marry beneath them.") to Zeno ("The goal of life is living in agreement with nature."), from Woody Allen ("Eighty percent of success is showing up.") to Oscar Wilde ("There are two tragedies in life. One is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it."), Unwritten Laws contains a generous sampling of the collective wisdom of humankind.
Hugh Rawson not only gives sources and dates for the law's, but annotates them with fascinating details. For example, Alfred Lord Tennyson's widely accepted "In the spring a young man's fancy turns lightly to thoughts of love" turns out to be a mistake, recent research showing that male testosterone levels are actually higher in the fall!
This delightful book is as wonderful for browsing as it is for providing guidance over the rocks and shoals of life.

A Keeper.......2003-06-27
This is a book that may be the addendum to the classic, "everything I know, I learned in Kindergarten." A book of quotes or laws would have been boring , but the author includes such witty insights. "PARKERS OBSERVATION. men seldom make passes / At girls who wear glasses. POGREBIN'S AMENDMENT. Boys don't make passes at female smartasses." A book to treasure
The Dice Are Hidden.......2002-07-26
A wonderfully-crafted and edited collection of unwritten maxims -- many of which I have often improperly quoted -- Hugh Rawson's volume clears up many misconceptions and offers insightful historical anecdotes to amplify many of the "laws" than most of us live by (without acknowledging them).
Perhaps the most metaphysical of all is "Haldane's Observation;" that God doesn't play with dice (echoed in Einstein's theory that all of the universe's movements/activities are ultimately understandable). Rawson cleverly adds Stephen Hawking's contradictory observation that God not only shoots dice, but that they often land where man can't find them.
Totally enjoyable and entertaining, can be read straight through or left on the shelf as a "reference book," to be taken down as the occasion merits.

Witty and Informative.......2000-09-09
This book is full "field-tested" wisdom that I would suggest to anyone.
Wonderful title for training professionals!.......2000-05-08
I got a copy of this book from a local book store. What impresses me is Hugh Rawson's ability to locate the source of the "law". Reading this book is both easy and inspirational. As a management trainer, I found this book a great tool for my own REFLECTION:
Do I have beliefs that is questionable? Have I investigated all aspects of the problem? Am I afraid of making mistake and looking stupid?
These are the reflections I've come across while reading it at the bookstore (before I made the purchase, I've spent more than an hour reading it).
While developing management training course, I often come across situations when I want to include something inspirational in the course manual. If this looks familiar to you, Rawson's book is for you. It literally has everything you need to know about "unwritten laws" from the infamous Murphy's Law to those of the great ancient Chinese thinkers.
Get yourself a copy! Kelvin's Law: "You only miss those thing you've haven't done at the right time!"
Book Description
For the past three decades, Hollywood has developed a quiet obsession with translating Stephen King's fiction into film. Of the many major films that have been made of his novels and stories, not one has lost money. Part of this may be explained in terms of King's own popularity in American culture; he has been, after all, a bestselling writer since the late 1970s. But more inter-est-ing is what this cinematic fascination reveals about postmodern American culture. In the first coherent overview of Hollywood's major cinematic interpretations of Stephen King, Tony Magistrale examines the various thematic, narrative, and character inter-connections that highlight the relationships among his films. Opening with a revealing interview of Stephen King, the book takes us through chapters that explore such popular films as Stand By Me, Misery, The Shining, The Green Mile, and The Shaw-shank Redemption, among others.
Customer Reviews:
Hollywood's Stephen King.......2007-03-19
Tony Magistrale brings up some very good points throughout the book that I think most Stephen King Fans will agree on. I have enjoyed the book immensely.
Overanalyzing Stephen King.......2005-10-22
In Hollywood's Stephen King, author Magistrale is best when talking about how the movies based on King's works differ from the works themselves. When he evaluates movies that are very close to the stories as written, he tends to get bogged down in literary criticism, which is not what this book is supposed to be about.
The interview with King at the beginning of Hollywood's Stephen King is one of the best parts of this book. In it, you get the impression that King writes his stories on an emotional level, aiming to grab the reader and shake him silly. As a college graduate and former English teacher, he can probably sling the lit crit with the best of them, but he seems to be aiming primarily for entertainment rather than edification.
To analyze King's stories may be to find things in them that aren't really there. In fact, Magistrale delves into psychoanalysis of King from time to time, talking about what makes him tick. This type of speculation leads nowhere.
On the other hand, Magistrale's discussions of the films and how different directors and screenwriters have adapted them is quite interesting. He even takes on Carol Clover and her book, Men, Women, and Chainsaws. Although I agree with Clover in this case, Magistrale makes a good case for his argument.
In this book, Magistrale wisely limits himself to examining about twenty films and series based on King's novels, novellas, and short stories. He notes that the best adaptations have been on his shorter works, which allow a director to add to the story rather than be forced to subtract. Carrie, Misery, The Shawshank Redemption were all short stories or novellas rather than full-length novels.
It isn't necessary to have seen many of these movies or to have read much King at all to enjoy the commentary in this book. In fact, I didn't even realize that The Shawshank Redemption was based on a King story until I read this book. For a book based on a college course, this short volume is surprisingly readable and entertaining.
very good with a few flaws.......2004-10-31
This is a very good book that serves as a valuable addition to the canon of works exploring the phenomenon that is Stephen King. I would heartily recommend it to people who are King fans and who also like to read critical analysis of his stories.
This book focuses on the films that have resulted from King novels and stories. Magistrale's best readings here are of Kubrick's "The Shining" and Darabont's "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile," but he has something interesting to say about pretty much every movie he covers (which is not every single King film, unfortunately).
There are a few places where the book falls down a bit, though. For example, Magistrale seems to be convinced that the only version of Tobe Hooper's "Salem's Lot" that is commerically available is the truncated version released to theaters overseas. In fact, his entire criticsm is based on that edition. I've owned the complete four-hour version (three hours, actually, since the commericals aren't included) on DVD for several years. It's readily available from any online mercant, and has been for a long time now. How that simple fact managed to slip by Magistrale is a mystery to me, but it is the sort of ridiculous error that makes me wonder how many other things he might have gotten wrong.
Also, for a book that, I think, tries to be a critical overview of Stephen King movies, there are far too many digressions to discuss how things were done in the novel on which the respective movie was based. If one of Magistrale's points is that the King film canon is deserving of serious critical attention, then it is a disservice to constantly return to a discussion of how the novels are different.
Still, this is one of the better books of criticism I've read on the subject of Stephen King. I recommend it.
Red Blooded Criticism.......2004-10-11
Magistrale is one of those academics who has made a whole career writing about the work of a living author. It must make the author awfully uneasy thinking of all those people whose living literally depends on the products of one's brain. King must respect him, however, because he gives him his time and an awfully frank interview which opens up the book on a happy note. King has been treated both well and badly by Hollywood, and he must know that some of this bad treatment is his own fault. Though some fans think otherwise, people who like movies know that when King is in charge of adapting his own work (or even worse, writing originals for the screen) the results are almost always dire. Can't figure it out, how a man whose writing is so perfectly "cinematic," whatever that means, can have so literal and unimaginative a film sense. Oh well, at least we have the novels on the one hand and Rob Reiner, Brain De Palma, Stanley Kubrick and Frank Darabont (among others) to re-imagine King's work and make it come alive on the big screen. Save us from the Mick Garrises of the world!
Magistrale manages to make sense of some of the complexities of the film universe, and he can explain in high toned English why a film like CARRIE might be good and THE MANGLER unredeemably mediocre. I like the way he arranged the films into different categories, so there is a body of proto-feminist films, like DOLORES CLAIBORNE, and then a body of "high-tech gone awry" films like CHRISTINE and the beyond belief bad MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE. Magistrale is a highly intelligent man and his writing is not pretentious at all. He is the type of writer you'd like to know as a friend.
good read.......2004-02-05
At first glance I thought this might be tiresome because it is literary/cinema criticism and I was immediately transported back to a college English class. Surprise, I couldn't put it down! Stephen King is a genius. Tony Magistrael has made a career of studying horror with an emphasis on Stephen King's writings and film adaptations of his work. You can't help but appreciate King's craftsmanship and the volume and variety of his work. Magistrael's enthusiasm makes me think reading books I've avoided because I thought they would scare the crap out of me, might really be fun after all. I'm buying Misery today. And then, I'll watch the movie.

RPG books...classic.......2003-03-26
Tolkien, one of the best fantasy authors. These books are from the late eighties. They are Set in Middle earth as the name implies. RPG's...blown to hell by video games, not that they are bad. This book closley relates to dungrons and dragons, which I might add, has some rather nice books as well, but there is a problem with D&D...It requires more than one person, the isolation of a good solo rpg is hard to find.
I have always loved the game, D&D, and rpg's...video rpg's. But a week ago, I ran into troubles. The first...Nobody plays D&D, so I had to give that up. And second, I had noticed I was getting less educated, my life was going no where, I found two sources. One was videogame rpg's, they take too much time, and they are difficult to end play. The other was online rpg's, they took too much time as well...all that typing, BAH! And, they all had to be done in one place...my room, cutting into time I had to be doing something else. So I quite, said to hell with it and gave up.
So, one day I am in my father's basement, looking through his old books for a good read. As I bent across the stairs to grab frankenstein...which I hear is a good book...I noticed the words Middle Earth. TOLKEIN! I thought to myself. As I stretched fearlessly across the gap, it finaly came into my grasp. Apon closer inspection, I found that it was not just a fantasy book, it was a solo rpg based on tolkien's work! I then found that it was rather comoplex, a well made rpg. Copywrite of 88', the first of its series.
The plot is that you are an aprentice of Saruman the white, as he falls under the influence of Sauron. You decide to help the fight against Sauron by spying on Saruman. You also decide to tell the white council by sending message to Galadrial, the Lady of Lorien, to meet a reprisentative in a location you get to pick. Your task in the book is to find clues to Saruman's betrayal by searching the tower Orthanc. Then leave the tower and meet the reprisentative. The story can be as long or short as your decisions make it. Mine was short, not very short, but not very long. There are longer versions, I just made wise choices and came into few confrontasions.
For being the first of its kind, it is good, and for being only one of the many adventures you and your character(characters can be transfered from one game to another, maintaning their level, items, and abilities), it is a wonderful read. The constant fear of being found by Saruman, the many trense, if not action packed, situations, and the time limit to reach the representative. They all added to the adventure, and though I only faught two battles and three monsters, there re more that can be found, about 30 monsters, actualy. And, Saruman...if you have a death wish, or feel very lucky, that is....
I find it a good way to pass the time, and for 1 to 12 $ on this site, it will be much cheaper than most video games, even for the whole series. So try the book for a few dollars, it is worth it.

Practical, accessible.......2007-05-08
This book is a valuable guide to the real world issues of M&A's and Corporate Restructuring. Instead of dwelling too much on financial theory it provides informative descriptions of the options available to CEO's, CFO's, corporate boards and shareholders, as well as the ethical and tactical issues they will face. Language and structure both are very accessible, making this book equally useful as a study text or reference book.
I can recommend this book to both finance majors and laypeople.
Excellent book: highly recommend.......2006-03-10

good insight in the M&A world.......2003-12-27
This book gives the reader a very good insight in the world of mergers and acquisitions + corporate restructurings due to M&A. It covers all possible aspects of M&A activities, all very well explained. My opinion is that this book is especially useful if you are a beginner within M&A, as I was when I first read it.
It provides even more insights into the matter by stating clear examples of mergers and acquisitions.
This book is the one to buy if you are taking your first steps in the world of M&A...

The Premier Merger Book.......2002-04-28
This book is an excellent pragmatic treatment of the topic of mergers. It surveys the relevant research and combines it with many practical examples to demonstrate its relevance. The abundant case studies serve to drive home each major point. The topics covered feature a broad international focus throughout the book. Given the fact that mergers, acquisitions and corporate restructurings are now an international phenomena, we need a book which covers the topic from such a focus rather than just focusing on a U.S.-oriented treatment.
The other major advantage of this book over other merger books is its chapters on valuation. Practitioners will find this invaluable. I would strongly recommend this book to all interested in the field.
Kerry Monahan

Customer Reviews:
Interesting Subject... Boring Book.......2005-02-08
The subject of this book is quite interesting and the knowledgable authors add many insights into the field of Mergers and Aquisitions. However, the book is poorly written and designed. Simply opening the book will show colorless pages and bland figures that perfectly reflect the tone and content within. There is also a surprising number of spelling mistakes and grammatical errors (something I should not expect if I'm paying over $100 for a book).
Solid text to introduce this topic - readable and helpful.......2004-09-30
The fourth edition came out in 2003 and I am not familiar with earlier editions. In my view, this is a very good text. In its nearly 700 pages, it provides a solid and comprehensive overview of this interesting and important topic. Obviously, no textbook can be both a survey of the topic and provide complete coverage of every topic. This book goes deep enough that students being introduced to this topic will find plenty to work on and get enough information to develop a feel for all that is involved in changing corporate control and ownership structure for any number of reasons.
The book has 22 chapters in six parts. The six parts are:
1)Takeovers and Mergers in Practice
2)M&As - Theories and Empirical Tests
3)Valuation - The Strategic Perspective
4)Restructuring
5)M&A Strategies
6)Strategies for Creating Value
There are many end of chapter questions and dozens of mini-cases in the book. Plus, there are online resources for students available.
The book provides references at the end of each chapter for more in depth study, a glossary at the end, and an index.
This is a solid text that can also be read by the general reader interested in this topic.
I expected more.......2001-09-24
Considering the reputation of the primary author, I found the book to be ponderous to read and seemingly focused more on what the authors wanted to discuss than what might be really useful to students and those practicing M&A. The authors should have sought a more appropriate balance between theory and practice. This tome is weighted in favor of theory. It seems to spend more time addressing societal issues and issues of government policy than addressing the mechanics of how to plan for and implement transactions. In fact, only the last few pages of the book deal superficially with an approach to doing M&A.
The book also assumes substantial knowledge of accounting, finance and economics on the part of the reader. The dearth of examples also hinders the readers ability to readily understand how to apply complex concepts explained in torturous paragraphs of prose. It would have been helpful to use more illustrations to communicate concepts that are difficult for those of us that don't have Phds to understand.
Thankfully, there are other books that are far more helpful in explaining both theory and application of M&A. I have found Mckinsey's book on Measuring and Managing Valuation to be a much better guide to understanding how to apply complex valuation techniques. Integration methodology is well explained in Marks and Clemente's Winning at Mergers. For an excellent detailed overview of M&A, see Depamphlis Mergers Acquisitions and Other Restructuring or Weston's other, more recent book on M&A.
Largely Disappointing.......2001-05-12
The book is really only useful for those interested in a literature survey, discussion of public policy, and somewhat tedious discussion of theoretical concepts.
Written by academics for academics!!!.......2001-04-14
On balance, this book provides a good overview of the subject and of recent academic studies. However, it is often theoretical and "ivory-towerish." There is relatively little that really instructs the reader about transactions are actually done. A great deal of time is devoted to discussing why they occur, but little practical insight is provided as to the challenges and issues that must be resolved. This book may be suitable for someone who is curious and interested in reading about M&A but provides little guidance for those interested in learning how to undertake transactions.
