Bilge of the Communist studios.......2005-08-23

The Communist era is best known for grandiose pompous art, that can be enjoyed for some of its dramatic flair, aggression or harping over class inequities. Unfortunately this book showcases none of that genre. It is a selective presentation of unimaginative talentless minimalist junk, mostly printed in black and white. The Soviets did have some original strains of modern art in their propaganda machinery, but little of it is reproduced here. This is just a sad cocktail of unoriginal ideas - borrowed from the West and executed poorly (an artistic equivalent of industrial rip-offs of Western consumer goods from the same era). If you want to see some original and funky modern Communist posters, see "Revolucion: Cuban Poster Art" by Lincoln Cushing.

In a class by himself.......2004-01-15

Anyone trying to make sense of modern culture is bound to fail. Wiley's job, it seems, it to show why. The cartoons are all just a little off from reality - it's not the difference that's so amusing, but the realities that he lampoons.

I get a taste of Wiley in my daily newspaper. This collection is a feast, a treasure of daily and sunday strips. Now that I see them collected, the recurring themes and characters are even more apparent and enjoyable.

My one complaint about this book is density - or lack of it. Other comic strip collections in this format print at least five or six dailies per page - this usually prints just two or three. Yes, I like being able to see additional detail in each panel. On the whole, I'd prefer more Wiley.

The more life experience you have under your belt the more you will enjoy Wiley's work. Both my husband and I loved this book. It was worth every penny. Just the book to pick up when you want to pick yourself up after a rough day.

Hmmmm...........2002-09-04

This is definitely a book of, from and about the 1990's. For those of us who lived through them, this will seem extremely funny. For those whose memories start a bit later, or who were rather young at the time, this will be an interesting anthropological study. Except for the occasioanl cartoon that made me laugh out loud, bring the book to work and photocopy a page, clip the cartoon out and post it by a computer, and point it out obsessively to everyone else in the office.

Wiley is one of my favorite cartoonists, and I love his stuff... but maybe more his later stuff than this earlier stuff. He has a website, and you can read his current cartoons online (back to 2000). He even does buisness cards. I want the ones where you can have your name & info next to a picture of the penguin hovering near a flower. Unfortunately, his website stuff doesn't ship overseas... Guess I have to wait.

If you are a) really pessimistic about life in the cities, life in the present or life in general because of b) lawyers, the IRS, families, neighbours, panhandlers, people in general, God and / or c) still have a sense of - admittedly weird - humour left, then this is a book for you. Even if it is baaad!

Otherwise enjoy life without it.

Even if you are not having fun with your mates in a pub but just sitting in your couch alone, this book can guarantee you to have a good time.

For it contains more than 1000 jokes, you will be sure to find jokes that suit your taste.

Have to prepare a speech and want to find something interesting to warm up the audience? This is a smart buy.

I love this anthology. It includes most of my favorites among poets who are active at this time, such as Barbara Orton, Bob Hicok, and Tony Hoagland. For readers who want to know more about what's going on in poetry right now, this is an excellent place to begin. Don't be misled by the title. The dates refer to birth dates.

This is an excellent survey of the history of western Christian hymnody from the earliest Biblical and historical references to modern times. Written in clear, non-esoteric language, this book can be enjoyed by church musician and lay person alike. Learn the historical, social and theological background of our hymn heritage. Though published by an unabashedly evangelical-friendly house, this book does not advocate for any particular style of music, but rather embraces all hymnody that has reflected and/or influenced communities of faith.

American Music Librarianship is a biographical and historical review of the musical situation in American libraries from its roots in the late 19th century to the 1980s. Beginning with the period from 1854-55 when the Boston Public Library began to buy music for its collections, Bradley tracks the development of the Music Division in the Library of Congress under the guidance of chief librarian Oscar Senneck. The opening section examines the professional careers of America's first music librarians and the subsequent development of music libraries, taken from information provided in their papers; documentation in their libraries; and from oral interviews with the librarians, their spouses and their successors. In the second and third sections, Bradley covers the librarians involved in the formulation of classification schemes and rules for cataloguing. Pales by comparison.......2007-09-03

Disappointing only when compared to his other books. Not really pearls from Donald Trump himself, but rather it is advice from a number of other successfull people compiled into a "coffee table" format. That aside, most of the advice was helpful, but much was repetitious. But then most achievers have the same traits, don't they? It's just that Mr. Trump has all of these (which he onlys mentions once), and then so many more.

The "so many more" are revealed in his other books like "How to get Rich" and "Think Like a Billionaire". One interesting aspect of his writing is how he matures from "The Art of the Deal" forward. He readily acknowledges his mistakes and explains how he has learned from them. What always shines through is his indefatigable spirit of not ever giving up no matter how tough the going gets.

I read the book he co-authored with Robert Kiyosaki "Why we want you to be rich" and I liked it! So I decided to read some more of Trump, but without flicking through this book as I was catching a plane to Korea. I was disappointed as it is just a bunch of affirmations really. Sure.. good advice
from people who know how to get things done. But I was hoping to get more insights into investing.

The key word is "some". Most of the advice is commonsense or if you don't have any, I take it back. This book is just a compilation of advice from successful business contacts of Trump. Trump doesn't really offer any advice except a few lines in the introduction.

Not really an easy read. A lot of antidotal comments, and just a collection of valuable advice given by hundreds of powerful CEOs and other successful people. More of a reference book than anything.
