You think you'd get more for your money.......2000-12-07

When I heard about this book, I was expecting an elaborate autobiography detailing the Sock Puppet's mysterious past. Unfortunately, I discovered too late that it was only a 64-page paperback w/ witty photos and equally witty captions written by the Sock Puppet for each photo.

Don't get me wrong - the book is hilarious. But I guess I was expecting much more. This is an extremely fun book to read at a bookstore if you're there with nothing better to do, but only die-hard Sock Puppet fans should make a purchase.

The Pets.com TV advertising campaign was hilarious. The commercials with the Sock Puppet standing in as the witty Pets.com 'Spokes-puppet' were pure marketing genious (although sadly not enough to stop their recent demise).... The book however, is only moderately amusing, and doesn't really capture the humor that was found in the TV commercials. A collection of pictures accompanied by some handwritten captions made for a fairly average read. I'd highly recommend purchasing the actual 'Sock Puppet' from Amazon.com...since I think for the extra few bucks it's more fun to entertain kids or co-workers with the charming little terry-cloth sock, than spending money on this book. Only diehard 'Sock Puppet' fans should spend their money here. I don't mean to be cutting, but I guess I was expecting a little more.

It looks slick, maybe even gimmicky. But it was worth the price to find this thin shiny book that completely hit the mark in capturing the fun of the Sock Puppet. The photos and writing were excellent -- they caught the quirky humor of the commercials, and managed to stay brilliant by keeping it short and to the point. (Although short, as the Sock Puppet says in the introduction, is a relative term when you measure time in dog years.) Now, if only they would add some audio...

An interesting and intelligent read, aimed at academia but with much to offer the informed layman, Galt's book addresses an area of film theory that so far seems to have merited little discussion. While focusing on films of the 90s, the book's ideas remain topical, and will have you looking at some old favourites with a fresh and newly-informed perspective.

a double perspective.......2006-07-24

Galt gives us a strange double perspective in her analysis of European films. These were mostly made around 1990, as communism collapsed in eastern Europe. And they were mostly made by people in those countries. But the settings of the films tended to be in World War 2 or in the immediate aftermath. The doubleness of the analysis is given by her book being written presumably shortly before the book was published in 2006. This 15 year lapse gives another temporal distance, that aids in the objectivity of the analysis.

What we see in the movies is that they were made in a time that was consciously aware of its historic significance. As a transition between eras. Between the Cold War and whatever would come after it. Hence, Galt choose to look at the movies set at the end of World War 2. She reads in them a subtext that just as those were at the end of another era, so too was this used as a thematic vehicle for the hopes (and fears) of 1990.

Intresting but not very recommendable for Hip Hop Fans.......2003-09-15

Ice Cube "Attitude" is a quiet well depiction of Ice Cube's
way to becoming one of the world's greatest rappers and black artists in general. It's well written and an intresting read for Ice Cube fans that just wanna know about Ice Cube's life. Yet it's not very suitable Hip Hop fans, because on the one hand the Author tries to involve Hip Hop culture in his book by depicting some facts about Hip Hop culture in order to show its significance to the life of Ice Cube and his development, which would be a good thing to do in a book about Ice Cube, but on the other hand it seems as if the author doesn't really know anything about Hip Hop culture as well as about some bands, which had a certain significance to Ice Cube's story as a rapper, that are mentioned in is book, e.g. the author says Cypress Hill is a band form the East Coast!
Don't get me wrong, its a very intresting book about the person Ice Cube but the author shouldn't try to "explain" several circumstances in Hip Hop culture itself.

Surprising read.......2003-03-03

Not being a fan of rap in any way, shape or form I opened this book w/ a pretty closed mind. As I turned the pages, I found Ice Cube to be much more than just a rapper. The author does an
excellent job of portraying the man's life not only in regards to his music but his work as an actor, writer & director. Through Mr. McGiver's words, I discovered what a hard working, determined & intelligent man Ice Cube is. This is a great source of information for Cube fans & a good read even for those who don't care for his music. Well done Mr. McGiver! This book was interesting enough to keep my attention despite the fact that I had absolutely no interest in the man before I turned the 1st page.

I have not found such a comprehensive book for design of six sigma. I started using this book for advanced experimental design and taguchi methods, but ended understanding the complete roadmap for design of six sigma. The systems approach allows an enthusiast reader to start anywhere, without having to spend time refering back to earlier chapters. The relatively newer trends as TRIZ and axiomatic design have also been nicely dealt with.
Overall, this is a very nice and easy read book, with excellent and well defined examples. A must for everyone who wants a quick refresher on the design principles of six sigma.

A book serves all your needs.......2004-04-02

This is an outstanding DFSS book for production development. It contains integrated information and some of which you could hardly find anywhere else, thus with one book in hand, you have all the tools to get to your destination. This is also a easy to read book providing the reader with a solid understanding- Concepts are clearly defined, real world examples/ case studies are fully described and the chapters are well organized. It can serve as a textbook for students/beginners and also can serve as a handbook for experienced engineers.
The title says it all- this is a roadmap for you to find the way correctly and easily. I am reading the book right now, and the book is really beneficial to me.

Full of information and errors.......2004-03-30

This is a book with a lot of information. Each chapter can be used as a starting point for a specific six sigma technique. However, this is the worst edited book I have ever read. You can hardly find one page without errors/typos.

A matchless guide.......2003-08-03

While the concept of six-sigma is a very popular one, it is not often that one can find such a comprehensive yet clearly-written volume devoted to the most important topics of six-sigma. A book that contains so much information and not just hot air is especially hard to find. Yang and El-Haik have successfully written one of the most impressive and useful reads I have ever encountered within this field. Especially intriguing and novel concept of TRIZ. A very worthwhile book, in any case.

Application Oriented.......2003-07-01

In recent times, there has been a lot of talk and hype about DFSS with very little substance thus far--until this one! I found the book an easy read, application oriented and a relatively prescritive approach to apply DFSS for products, processes and/or services. The sections on TRIZ and Axiomatic Design expose the opportunities largely untapped in the design world today. A must read book for organizations serious about Six Sigma--whether they are focused on delivering worldclass products and services to their customers or designing processes to run world class business operations--a thumbs up all the way!!
