Silver in America 1840-1940: A Century of Splendor.......2000-06-30
Silver in America 1840-1940: A Century of Splendor is a highly readable, well-documented overview of the of the development of the American silverware industry. The author, Dr. Charles Venable, has skillfully woven into this study the historic, economic, and social factors that impacted this industry as well as the influence that the silverware industry had in shaping the social rituals and customs of the era. Venable also provides a great deal of detail on the production, technology, and marketing of silver. This book, although replete with marvelous photographs and illustrations, is not a pattern identication guide and readers interested in such reference material would no doubt be disappointed. For those readers who are serious lovers of American silver this book is must reading and a necessary addition to one's library.

SPECTACULAR!.......2001-07-03
This was by far one of the best and most touching book in the FBOFW collection. I could not stop reading this book. I loved how Lynn brought back a very old character back into the strip, and for all of you FBOFW fans.......you will be surprised at who it is and how they are brought back into the strip. I cannot believe how talented Lynn is! This book proves true talent of yours Lynn. I can guarrentee that you will not stop laughing and that you will not stop turning the pages. Before you read this book, you might want to go out and buy something for a stomachache 'cause you will be working that diaphragm of yours. I hafta admit that I cried and was truly touched by some of the book issues. Get out the kleenex, too! There are no words in any language to describe how truly wonderful this book is!
I CAN'T STAND APRIL!.......2000-11-27
Count me in as an April buster. I think she is one of the biggest brats to hit the funny pages in years. She hogs the bathroom, thus negatively impacting on Liz's time. Poor Liz keeps taking the rap for nasty April's misdeeds. April has tantrums, has a fresh mouth and never once gets punished. She does not own up to her actions and has no sense of responsibility. I agree with the other reviewer that her stunt down by the river cost poor Farley his life. Had he not sacrificed his own life to save the brat, he could have at least died in a warm and comfortable house.
April is very babyish for her age. She wears these stupid overalls and says "gots," which sounds just plain stupid. She never helps around the house and she asks for trouble. Don't forget, it was Bratface April who came up with that mean song about Jeremy. She's no innocent bystander. She is trouble with a capital TROUBLE and, like another reviewer aptly noted, head for the hills and don't look back once she hits the terrible teens. I can't abide April!
Oh, no! Here SHE comes!.......2000-07-24
Mrs. Lynn Johnston continues to impress us with her very skillful artistic talents and true-to-life storytelling (though she does has an assistant or two in her studio) and all the characters are quite believable and lovable, thus easy to relate to. Especially the funny young Michael! But guess who's the least easy to relate of all. Little Missy Princess April Patterson, of course. That arrogant little kid rules over the whole household with a very sticky fist. She's forever lost in her own little fantasy world and whether she's back in the "reality", she's always throwing temper tantrums, demanding her way, molesting her big sister's personal things, leaving such disgusting messes (including fecal matter in the pet rabbit's litter box), and just plain driving the poor middle-aged mother right out of her mind with her "cutesy" antics. In fact, she even gets involved into two real crisises; one at the riverbank that cost the life of the poor old Farley and the other that left Jeremy Jones with a broken leg in the hospital. But - that's not the worst yet to come...so when she becomes a rebellious teenager - RUN, RUN FOR YOUR DEAR LIVES!
A HARVEST OF GREAT STORIES!.......2000-07-12
This book has yielded a rich crop of great stories. The cast is certainly a convincing one. They are all folks one can recognize from real life counterparts, from funny, savvy Mr. Jim Patterson to the spoiled, unplesant April. She's the only one I have never been able to like. (I don't know how she gets by with her mouth. I'm surprised nobody ever put their foot down to her and she takes advantage of everybody. April is the weed growing in the garden)! It was good reconnecting with Gordon, who is a sterling success story (from the poor boy who was often picked on and who lived with domestic violence to the successful entrepreneur -- you go, Gordon)! Lawrence, too, was an added treat as his orientation has helped pave the way for acceptance of gays among his "real" counterparts. Love the book! It was great, as I expected it would be.
Great!.......2000-07-10
This delightful collection of a very high caliber strip does not disappoint. The strip boasts of a delightful cast of characters with the exception of obnoxious April, who is the sole weed growing in the comic's Garden of Eden. This book will not disappoint loyal FBOFW followers, myself included.
Book Description
This hilarious sci-fi parody chronicles one man s weekend vacation on Fire Island, where-amid all the cocktails, Speedos, and circuit parties-he s hoping to find true love. But these amorous plans are foiled when a vat of toxic waste washes ashore-and it s up to him to save Fire Island from a plague of zombie drag queens!
On every page, YOU have control of the story: If you ask the lifeguard to bring you to the sheriff s office, turn to page 108. If you ask the lifeguard to warn everyone at the night club, turn to page 32. If you ask the lifeguard if he d like to work out sometime, turn to page 140.
With more than 35 illustrations throughout-and more hot bods than a year s subscription to Men s Health magazine-Escape from Fire Island! is the most campy and hilarious read of the summer.

Burns Cabin.......2005-08-29
This isn't the kind of book i would normaly look for in barnes & noble... but i found it in my own way...
There's a little camp somewhere in the USA. And in that camp there is a cabin which houses the oldest teenage boys who attend this camp. And within this cabin is a book.
I've gone to this camp for 5 years, and this book has become infamous as the hilariously outrageous creation that it is over those years. Only this last year was i actually in the cabin which has the book, and yet i still new very well what the Meat Rack was.
Having this book as your "Bedtime story" is by far one of the most entertaining things to obtain. I've read every page, died in so many ways, and even saved fire island (three times, with a different boyfriend by the end each time)... its not meant to be a great intelectual stimulant, but its worth far more than the $10 or so you'll ever be asked to pay for it. And come on... u get to have hot sex with a body builder... ON A WATER BED!
Vacation for the Mind .......2005-01-28
When I was a child, Choose Your Own Adventures was the coolest thing. At my elementary school's library, we were privileged enough to have an entire RACK dedicated to the Choose Your Own series of books. I think the library was willing to do anything to trick us kids into reading.
As an adult, I no longer need to be tricked into reading. I CRAVE a new book in what I can only compare to how a smoker must feel when they have needed a cigarette for a couple of hours. In the spirit of nostalgia, I was excited to see the Choose Your Own Genre making something of a resurface on the book store book shelves.
One of the books from the series published by Quirk Books, "Escape From Fire Island," presented me with a twenty minute, no brain adventure written by Pamela Hobbs. As a gay man on Fire Island, I'm faced with such tough, life changing decisions such as if I should take my shorts off or not to safe a toxic-doused drag-queen, and if I'd rather talk to the blonde OBVIOUS bottom, or be a coward and drink at the bar.
As far as plot goes, zombie drag queens try to take over the island. If you chose to save the island, turn to page 16. If you decide to run away like a terrified girl, turn to page 75. Nothing life changing.
That's exactly what I loved about this little book. There is nothing life changing about it. It won't make you think. It won't give you deep inner thoughts about religion and philosophy. Sometimes, people read to escape their problems. Some people read for the same reason they watch television. They want to put their problems away, and laugh. They want to enjoy a fantasy land where there is no credit card debt, and there is no AIDS.
This day and age, we have enough serious crap to deal with. I'm all for a book that wants to have a good time, and wants to take me along with it. I'm generally not a fan of camp, but no other tone would have fit into this spoof-homage to the '60's beach movies with a comic horror twist.
If only they could have found a way to fit a musical number in somehow...
Romping good time.......2004-12-01
ready for a guilt free adventure? all it costs is the price of this book. you can do any number of things running from radio active drag queens, find romance in the bushes even hook up with a sexy lifeguard. it's all here and it's all fun. great book.
Searching for James H. English..........2003-10-03
This book is off da meat hook, no doubt! I wish the writer would send me an e-mail...it would be cool to talk to him!
Campy, B-movie choose-your-own fun..........2003-04-12
OK, I liked this - I really liked it! Toxic waste is turning everyone on Fire Island into homicidal zombie drag queens; do you flee to the ferry, attempt to find a way to defeat the tottering-on-platform-heels undead, or try to score at the nearest bar? [Think of your favorite cheesy zombie flick, but where the girlish screams come from a drama queen instead of a cheerleader!]
As a choose-your-own book it's quite well done: the choices are plentiful and varied - sensible choices, libido-driven choices, the "I know this is a bad idea but I want to see what happens" choices, just plain unlucky choices - and the possible endings cover a pretty wide swathe, with a few that may be regarded as "successful" and lots of opportunities for disaster.
And it's funny. Silly/campy/funny: when the hero's swimsuit is shredded he exclaims "Damn it! That was Versace!" And there are hunky lifeguards, and glory holes, and mermen, and... well, as one of the cover-blurb reviews puts it, "All the excitement of a Fire Island vacation - for just $$$. You can't even buy a *drink* on Fire Island for $$$"
If I had one quibble it would be that the illustrations are a wee bit tame - but I suppose that's in keeping with the style of the book, so I won't fuss too much. [They're tame enough that they might puzzle, but probably won't shock, anyone who opens this book under the impression that it's a traditional choose-your-own adventure book.
[The cover also lists future releases in the "Date with Destiny" line, and I sincerely hope they're really in the works. I can't wait to read "I Know Who You Did Last Summer"...]

Today, Boris Karloff is known principally for his portrayal of the Frankenstein monster and his narration of the television special How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He was, in fact, an amazingly talented actor whose characteristic lisp never kept him from playing a great variety of parts. Author Cynthia Lindsay was a personal friend of Karloff's for more than 30 years. As she tells the story of his life, she not only brings forth the consummate professional who felt that to act was to live but also describes Karloff as an extraordinarily warm and genteel man, the antithesis of the roles he is most famous for. A full filmography and hundreds of photographs are included in this loving biography.
Customer Reviews:
A tender and insightful look into a craftsman's life........1998-06-19
William Henry Pratt aka Boris Karloff was perhaps one of the most underated and illused actors in film history. Cynthia Lyndsay's book provides a most personal and loving journey into this gentleman's life. Included too in her portrait is a concise history of acting in the early 20th century as well as a detailed portrait of the actor's craft. Karloff was the consumate professional on stage and screen and off. This book is highly reccomended for any interested in the craft of acting.
Book Description
The musics of Africa play a particularly important role in expressing and forming identities. This book brings together African and Nordic scholars from both musicology and other disciplines in an attempt to analyse various aspects of the complex playing with volatile identities in music in Africa today. Taken together the papers put new light on the assumed or real dichotomies between countryside and city, collective and individual, tradition and modernity, authentic and alien. The papers are based on contributions for a conference organized by the research project “Cultural Images in and of Africa” of the Nordic Africa Institute together with the Sibelius Museum/Department of Musicology and the Centre for Continuing Education at Åbo Akademi University in Åbo (Turku), Finland in October 2000. The book includes a keynote speech by Christopher Waterman (UCLA), and an introduction by Annemette Kirkegaard, Copenhagen University. Southern, West and East Africa are represented in the studies, which cover a great variety of musics.

Disappointing effort .......2006-08-19
I've read a couple of Levinson's books but this may be the last. This book was flawed in so many important ways that I would not recommend it for anyone with more than a cursory understanding of marketing.
As a couple of other reviewers pointed out. Levinson is trying to take complex marketing principles and transform them into bullets and coy little catchphrase. In the process he looses the complexity and richness of the topic, reducing the principles to a "taste great, less filling" tagline. While this might be successful if he is selling beer where "taste great less filling" is enough information for us to make a decision about what beer we are going to drink it is too superficial for framing our marking efforts.
Second, the writing is so awful it's uncomfortable. Poorly constructed sentences, incorrect word choices, and mixed and sometimes inappropriate metaphors abound. For example, on page 30 we are to believe that marketing is a bit like being a duck hunter were we blast our target (our customers) with a shot gun but on page 31 were the "big ducks" that flap our wings presumable being shot at by others if we are to follow his metaphor?. This doesn't make sense.
Third, the structure of the book--30 days to guerrilla marketing--is artificial and not very helpful. A thematic arrangement (like in his other books and most other marketing books) might have been more useful.
Now, on the other hand I did find helpful the basic messages of the book--that marketing is an ongoing process, not something you doing once or twice, that marketing is about knowing who you are and who your competitors are, and so forth. Unfortunately the messengers gets in the way of the message in far too many cases.
For my money, Levinson's other books are a better value as is The Portable MBA in Marketing.
A great plan.......2006-08-09
Follow the plan. It all makes sense at the end when you make more trips to the bank!
My Favorite Guerilla Marketing Books.......2005-05-10
I read Levinson's original Guerilla Marketing Handbook a couple of years ago and liked it alot. I thought there were some good ideas for my small businesses; web design and wedding DJ. I've thumbed thru some of the other Guerilla Marketing books at bookstores, but got excited when I saw Guerrilla Marketing in 30 Days. I've neglected marketing my business in the past year or so and saw this book as a roadmap for getting back on track. I think it's a great companion to Levinson's original masterpiece.
One of the things the authors recommend is to think about your marketing every day, which is something I haven't done. But I got stoked as I went thru the process and the exercise was made easy because it's all laid out for you. Low and no-cost marketing ideas? That's for me!
I have already gotten some inquiries which were the direct result of the marketing plan I put together with this book, and I'm sure more leads and sales will come.
Over the weekend, I began re-reading the Guerilla Handbook looking for some new ideas going forward. Tonite, I see that Amazon is offering BOTH books as a special. I think it's the best 25 bucks an entreprenuer can invest in their business.
Try Another Levinson Book Instead.......2005-05-09
I bought this book becasue I thought a 30 day, self-guided tour of Guerrilla Marketing would be a handy tool in my marketing tool kit.
I was disappointed.
The book is a regurgitation of Levinson's principles, which are more fully described in Levinson's other books, like Guerrilla Marketing. The 30 day approach is artificial, and the marketing advice in this book is almost too simplistic to be actionable.
Levinson has written so many insightful books that you'd do better to dive into one of his thoughtful books and absorb his timeless advice. This book misses that mark with its pat advice to complex marketing issues.
I think the format for the book is a good one, but the execution wasn't.
