Book Description
Vincent Van Gogh, Frida Kahlo, and Karen Finley are just a few of the well-known artists who have used shamanistic techniques to access visions. Mark Levy explores the use of seeing dreaming and ritual by these and other artists seeking the kind of visionary experience that has long been the wellspring of creativity. Since humankind first learned to use imagination and dreaming there have been seers and sages eager to press beyond the known and verifiable to see what they can see. This is their story.

Seeing the World through Artist and Shaman Eyes.......2005-08-15
TECHNICIANS OF ECSTASY takes the reader on a scintillating, scholarly tour through the work of several artists. While not all artists see the world as shaman do, there are some artists who see, dream, and perform in much the same way as the shaman. Some of the 27 artists included in TECHNICIANS OF ECSTASY are: Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Alex Grey, Henri Rousseau, Salvador Dali, Man Ray, Ann McCoy, and Jonathan Borofsky.
What makes this book so fabulous is the way it demonstrates ways that spiritual meaning and wisdom is at the heart of much of the world's best art. The world's best artists know how to break out of habitual modes of looking, and in sharing their visions, empower all who view their art by helping people open their eyes to new ways of seeing. Author Mark Levy explains, "In shifting attention from common sense or 'consensus reality,' artists as shamans succeed in expanding their consciousness and the consciousness of their communities and offer blueprints for spiritual development." I particularly loved the shamanic techniques mentioned to stimulate creativity, as these exercises indeed are part of the core of all shamanic training: isolation, not-doing, prolonged looking, the strong eye, and setting up dreaming.
TECHNICIANS OF ECSTASY is essential reading for everyone who is excited by meaningful art, as well as for anyone wishing to better understand how to see the world through the artist's and the shaman's eyes. I give this book my highest recommendation!
An enthralling, well written subject.......2001-08-17
I found Mr. Levy's work on shamanic techniqes as it applies to contempoary artists particularly fascinating. His research navigates the theory that mondern artists (visual as well as performance) such as Van Gogh, Kahlo, Dali and others were able to produce the transcendental content of their work through classic shamanic practices. Mr. Levy clearly illustrates the multiplicity of the creative process therein giving reverence and relevance to shamanic techniqes and towards the comprehension and appreciation of modern art. A must read for any art appreciator!

Although the casual reader (that is, a lazy reader looking for easy, New-Agey content) might find Levy's book too rigorous and academic, I felt that he was scrupulous and thorough in making a case for his theory that many contemporary artists use traditional shamanic techniques to achieve the spiritual and metaphysical content in their work. The profiles of individual artists and their specific uses of certain techniques or processes was especially illuminating, and I appreciated the fact that he included seminal figures like Joseph Beuys and performance artists like Karen Finley-- whose radical content sometimes obscures the powerful social critique it carries. Levy was clear in revealing how work by an individual can heal or benefit an audience of viewers or an entire community. The sections in the back of the book wherein he describes specific shamanic techniques in detail for those who want to experiment with them was especially valuable. Contrary to what another reviewer wrote, there was nothing spacey, indulgent or Druidic about this scholarly work!

TECHNICIANS OF ECSTASY: SHAMANISM & THE MODERN ARTIST by Mark Levy
A Review by Lanier Graham, Director, University Art Gallery California State University, Hayward
What is the relationship between shamanic art and Modern art? Until recently, most people in the art world would have answered: "little or none." Specialists have known for a long time that the relationship actually is very important. But the literature has been small, largely because most art historians have not known enough about shamanism to discuss it in critical terms. Levy is an exception, and his book is an excellent introduction to the subject. There are good reasons why his book has received very positive reviews from noted authorities on shamanism. Not only is he an unusually well-informed art historian, he also has studied the shamanic tradition extensively with highly respected teachers.
Levy guides us to the origins of Modernism among the Symbolist poets and painters when Mallarmé was arguing for the shamanic spirit of Orphism, and when Rimbaud and van Gogh were engaged in private, painful "vision quests" in their secular search for the sacred. Few artists regarded tribal art as beautiful until Gauguin, the Fauves, and the Expressionists looked with new eyes. Picasso and the Cubists also were moved by shamanic art, but their interest was primarily formal. Not until the Surrealists did modern artists look for the shamanic psychology behind the forms. By the era of Abstract Expressionism in the 1940s & `50s, a large number of leading artists were starting to compare themselves to shamans. The curtain between worlds was being lifted.
With the development of Postmodernism in the second half of the 20th century, Neo-shamanism spread to the far corners of the contemporary art world. In a series of penetrating profiles, Levy focuses on semi-shamanic techniques used by a variety of visual and performing artists who do not have the arrogance to call themselves "shamans," but have drawn on the wisdom of our tribal ancestors to bring rays of light into a dark world. The artists discussed offer important clues to how art can help us through the poisoning clouds of self-centered rationalism toward a fuller, richer humanity.

If Lucy Knew How Funny She Was, She Wouldn't Be Crabby!.......2000-07-13
In this collection (originally entitle As You Like It, Charlie Brown), Lucy gets top billing in many of the stories. She takes piano lessons making Schroeder rather jealous ("You're cute when you're angry!"), points out Charlie Brown's faults (for $143- even by today's standards, that's pretty steep!), pulls a cruel joke on the blockhead for April Fool's Day, forces Linus to sing "Jingle Bells" at the PTA Christmas Program and uses his blanket for a Science Fair project.
Of course, the rest of the gang have their moments. Charlie Brown has a sore elbow and can't pitch for a week (and the gang isn't heartbroken). Snoopy refuses to see the vet for a rabies shot. A character by the name of 5 is introduced. The Peanuts gang may not consider Lucy a "cutie" but Peanuts wouldn't be the same without her!

Product Description
The inevitable death of home fitness equipment. The humor of debt-counseling commercials. Militants who use plastic dividers at supermarket checkouts. Jared and his goofy Subway sandwich diet. The State of the Union Address. Movie studio research screenings.
These are just a handful of the many subjects Dennis Camlek tackles in this collection of amusing observations. Drawing upon humorous life and entertainment career experiences, he not only takes aim at pop culture, but celebrates it, and promises to make you laugh at the proceedings, often at his own expense.
Call it a commentary on subjects with little to no social relevance; a real "less is more" philosophy.

Oddities of Human Behavior & Pop Culture.......2005-12-10
Correct Me if I'm Wrong is a collection of cleverly written and very humorous anecdotes of everyday life. The author's witty take and unexpected commentary on the sometimes mundane, sometimes absurd, and sometimes unbelievable will have you wanting more. He wonderfully describes the daily curiosities we all share with best friends, old roommates and even exes-life's idiosyncrasies we take for granted such as the condiment area at Roy Rogers, the plastic dividers in any Grocery Store that separate your sundries, or Jared of the Subway Diet fame.
Mr. Camlek's entertaining and, at times, hilarious observations make for an enjoyable read and fun book for all family members. A great gift for anyone who likes to read about the oddities of human behavior and pop culture.

This is the perfect book for the hot, humid days of summer. You'll find yourself nodding in agreement as you read about the peculiarities of life in Manhattan, and laughing along with the author as he recounts the joyous and sometimes frustrating times of his past life & career experiences. This is a book you'll enjoy reading and recommending to friends.

A look at the idiosyncratic, ever–rising film career of Johnny Depp, one of this generation’s most impassioned, highly praised actors.
Customer Reviews:
Don't be Fooled-------.......2007-04-12
What a waste of my money! As others have stated, the somewhat detailed "history" of Johnny's family is interesting. However, once the reader gets to his films, it's basically a criticism of Johnny and every film he has done. This is just another author making money from Johnny Depp's name under the guise of being an expert on the actor. A much better read is Johnny Depp by Christopher Heard. This is an author who actually "gets" Johnny Depp and provides more details about his life/movies that are accurate and not opinionated like Meikle.
what can you say;......its johnny........2007-01-07
Great book on Johnny Depp a must for any true fan.
Denis Meikle: A Kind of DElusion.......2006-08-27
I agree with everything Mazzy D said.
This one did start out as a pretty straightforward bio, but as I went along, and it focused on his films and his romances, there came the revelation that this author did not want you to like Johnny Depp, and it's full of misquotes and rumor.
He seems to go out of his way to find the most unflattering reviews and he seems to be bringing down almost all of the films and everyone involved in them (in particular poor Tim Burton)!
Occassionally he'll put a positve comment in there for good measure, but Denis Meikle is a verbose, sef-absorbed charletan.
beware:
There's money to be made for anyone and everyone to write rubbish and ride along the crest of Johnny's tidal wave of current success.
I'm glad I did not purchase this book!
This book is the illusion.......2005-12-08
I'm not really sure why a writer would make the decision to write a book on someone whose films he didn't particularly care for. It starts off quite well with an interesting look at Depp's family history but then takes a downward turn. Each film Johnny has appeared in since the start of his career is criticized one at a time (except for perhaps Blow in which the author manages to scrounge up a positive thought or two-WOW). Not to mention that there are glaring typos and random errors that any well versed Depp fan/historian would pick up in a heartbeat (The Arizona Dream 12 minute wedding sequence was not Paul's, it was Axel's for goodness sake!)
And what is this illusion that the author speaks of? Why, it's the idea that perhaps Depp and his agent Tracey Jacobs have managed to fool us all by marketing his personality in order to make him who he is today. Funny, and here I thought his success might have something to do with his gift for transforming into the various characters he has played over the years. But what do I know. I'm just a brainless fan. And this book is definitely not fan friendly.
In conclusion, this book is more suitable for someone who wishes to learn the "fine art" of becoming a film critic. I'm sorry I didn't know all this beforehand.
Interesting biography.......2005-09-01
This biography was interesting but it was more about the history of Johnny's movies than about the great actor himself. The author goes into great detail about the directors and the screen plays so much so I found it at times to be confusing. He made some errors in his facts. The worst was the telling of the last scene of the POTC where he left out one of the best lines in the movie.

Amazing book for aspiring guitar players!.......2004-03-07
I bought this book along with my new Martin acoustic several days ago, and think it is the best of all the beginning books that I purchased. It contains the exact material that I was looking for in a 'getting started' book. I really like the fact that the book is in full color and has photos to assist wih proper finger positioning and color coded tabs. Also, the included CD that goes along with the book material provides an easy-to-use checkpoint to make sure that I am playing the material correctly. In the back, you also get the best chord dictionary (with color photos) that I've seen in any of the books that I bought. Highly recommend!
Excellent way to learn.......2003-06-29
I am just learning to play the acoutstic guitar and have tried several of the "standard" self help books available. Have found that this book Instant Guitar in Full Color and its' associated playalong CD are way he top of the list. Excellent way for someone like myself, who has minimal musical experience, to get up and start playing within a short amount of time.
Great way to learn!.......2003-05-07
I got this book for my nephew and am amazed at how quickly it has helped him improve his guitar playing! The chord diagrams in color with accompanying photographs seem to be the perfect combination.

52 playful and easy to understand activites to hhelp parents teach children moral lessons that they won't forget
A child says, "I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand." 10-Minute Life Lessons for Kids is a book about seeing and doing--a book that gives parents the ability to teach the powerful principles of honesty, trust, generosity, love, and other values. Children will discover the objectives themselves as they actively participate in fun games and activities.
The games can be done in any order, with very little planning and with very few supplies--just common objects most people have around the house like toothpicks, string, pennies, or an apple. Some can be done while riding in the car, and others can be expanded to fill a whole evening with family fun. The activities in 10-Minute Life Lessons for Kids will not only create cozy and enjoyable moments of family togetherness, they will have a lasting impact on your growing child.
Customer Reviews:
Great Choice for Teaching Kids Values!!.......2007-05-29
I love this book, it is easy to follow and has fun entertaining was to teach kids values.
For parents, not educators.......2007-04-25
I was hoping this book would be a useful resource for developing supplemental activities for an elementary-level (K-5) curriculum on non-violence and conflict resolution. But it is really geared toward parents (as the title indicates), not educators. The activities and required materials are suitable for an interpersonal setting, not really for the average classroom or after school programs. I found that 104 Activities That Build: Self-Esteem, Teamwork, Communication, Anger Management, Self-Discovery, Coping Skills by Alanna Jones, was more useful for my needs/goals.
It was great.......2006-11-16
It was very helpful and the activities were really only 10 minues long, at max.
Good Topic Selection.......2006-11-10
There are quite a few important topics to choose from. Seems to start good conversation with the children. (Ages 9-13)
Ten minutes that could affect a lifetime!.......2006-03-29
This is an interesting and useful book. It provides a wide range of activities to use with children to help them learn about themselves and understanding others. Many of the activities offer ways to accommodate for older or younger audiences, and some are specific to ages. The range of topics addressed is rather inclusive, and the activities are designed to appeal to all types of learners (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). The activities offer a creative approach to each topic, and are nice springboards for deeper discussions. I am certain this book will be utilized both in my home and in my classroom!

Lots of good advice!.......2002-11-17
These cards are filled with good ideas and reminders of what it takes to find the right person. It's easy to get into a rut but these cards have ideas on how to get out of the house more and hopefully put yourself in a situation where you'll meet someone. These cards are well worth the money to give yourself a boost especially if you've been out of the dating scene for awhile.
A *COMPLETE* waste of money ... What a ripoff!.......2001-06-05
This was the worst waste of money I ever spent. All of the short, simple "tips" are self-explanatory; I can't even imagine anyone over the age of 9 not already knowing them. Unless you spend most of your spare time mugging people, I can't imagine that it would add anything to your life. I would very strongly suggest that you save your money and skip this one. YUCK!
Great informational book.......2001-04-18
It appears this another great card series which was just published. I'm glad I got mine right away. I wish it were in the form of a book instead of cards, but nevertheless, the cards are great. They illustrated, well written and easy to follow. They offers many tips on how to pamper yourself in ways I never even dreamed about. The best part is that they're all affordable. It covers everything from spoiling yourself with foods, applying home remedies to your body for sofe and silky skin and hair, to steam baths and pedicures. There's lots more. I thought the little cards were great. You don't need to be rich, famous, or spoiled to treat yourself to a little (or a lot) of pampering. These cards prove that.
Great movie suggestions for the romantic!.......2001-02-24
These cards are great romantic movie suggestions, perfect for a date with your sweetheart. I was expecting to see mainly classic old films and was pleasantly surprised by the wide array and selection. There's something for everyone here!

- ways for making both in-person and telephone meetings quicker and more productive;
- methods for confronting procrastination and poor work habits;
- 10 rules to adhere to when filing; and
- 14 ways to make meetings run smoothly and accomplish what you want them to.
Much of Eisenberg's advice is geared toward the executive; she advises closing your office door to really concentrate on big projects, something that the cubicle-bound can't do. But if you aspire to have that corner office, or if you're prone to losing important documents or rushing to big meetings several minutes late with sweat beading up along your forehead, Eisenberg's words of wisdom should help you get your act in gear.

An almost complete checklist for the office.......2004-12-12
This book is somehow a checklist of what to do and what not to do in your office. But, it is just that; nothing deeper. I would say that it is complete, and it is for mid 1990s. But, in mid 2000s, with computers and e-mail to 'eat' most of our office time, it need some enhancement in these areas. It covers them, but it focus 85% on traditional and 15% on electronic office.
Good for Organizational Review.......2002-09-05
I thought the ideas and tips were well divided into chapters in this book. It was easy to look for hints in a specific topic area. However, the read was so quick that I found myself looking for more insight into the ideas behind some of the suggestions made. I have read other books that have been more detailed about the overall organization process and gave more concise directions on how to get started down finding your organizational flow. This book is a great organizational review tool for AFTER you have incorporated your personal organizational process. A good reminder of healthy organization tips, though, not necessarily a pool of original organizational hints.
Very informative.......2001-11-29
This book is incredible! After years of trying to organize, missing promotions because of my disorganization (losing items, unpolished image...), I have become reasonably organized. I have even had a professional organizer try to help me, to no avail.
Naturally, not every tip will apply to every office. I was pleasantly surprised to realize that many were generic enough to be informative, but instructional enough to help.
At less than ten dollars, this is a must-have.
Insightful!.......2001-05-25
Ronni Eisenberg’s book demonstrates how your work habits can be your best friends or your worst enemies when it comes to organizing your office productively. The book is a mixture of common-sense suggestions and useful organizational tips. She includes helpful hints for home-office workers and organizational tips for those who use personal digital devices. At times, it’s a little too intricate (you may feel you are getting detailed instructions on how to tie your shoes), however, it also offers organizational gems....
