Book Description
Recognizing that a work of art is the product of a particular time and place as much as it is the creation of an individual, Duby provides a sweeping survey of the changing mentalities of the Middle Ages as reflected in the art and architecture of the period.
"If Age of the Cathedrals has a fault, it is that Professor Duby knows too much, has too many new ideas and takes such a delight in setting them out. . . insights whiz to and fro like meteorites."—John Russell, New York Times Book Review

The Terror and the Beauty.......2005-04-02
Now, don't get me wrong, this book is a very serious scholarly work packed with facts and dates, notes and references. However, according to the author -renowned French historian and member of the Académie Française Georges Duby, who died in 1996- History should be considered, and worked as, a literary genre. And hence his care with vocabulary and narration, his pains to characterize the frame of mind of those who populated the age he was a specialist in: the European Middle Ages. This book is maybe his most significant contribution to understanding the artistic heritage of those years, and he certainly succeeds with it in making us grasp some of the feelings and visions of the world that are behind some of the most striking monuments ever made by men: the gothic cathedrals.
Duby's aim is, as usual, to explain through carefully crafted narration how the society that erected such awe-inspiring monuments behaved and tried to understand itself; how cathedrals are a product of it, and also which were the powers that guided that society. But although some representatives of those powers (church and monarchy) may have been wholly convinced that Cathedrals where ultimately monuments to their glory, Duby shows us throughout the pages of this wonderful book how the architects and the workers, the masons, the servants, the monks, but also the priests and nobles, artists and scholars, contributed with their work and their blood, to make cathedrals maybe the most astounding homage to the power of Life, with its terror and its beauty.
Terror is what you will find at the very beginning of the book(in the year 1000 approx.): the terror of living in the wild forested land that then was Western Europe, trying to scratch a living out of the unyielding land, trying to survive and understand the scourge of terrible plagues or murderous invasions that decimated the few and scattered settlings. The amazing pungency of this beginning totally catches us (who probably expected an arid compilation of dates and battles) unawares and takes us from the basest level of medieval society (especially that of France) up through different layers to the powers that governed lives and souls and who decided where and when one of these fabulous temples should be erected.
Even if you are not a catholic or Christian, even if you are an atheist, when you walk into one of these striking temples you can't help but notice -at ground level, near your feet- how there are numerous tombs of kings, priests, powerful people, that will make you think about the unavoidable mystery and darkness of death; how higher up there are paintings and works of art depicting good and evil, the fights and the fears, the knowledge and redemption to be sought and found throughout life; and when you raise your eyes to the stained-glass windows and the soaring spires....the wonder and the bliss, the whole power of Life.
So, if you are considering a visit to one of these greatest of human works of art, the gothic cathedrals of Western Europe, this is the book to read, or even take with you. But even if this is not the case, I recommend you to read it. You will see a whole society creating, with their work and effort, with their minds and hearts, with their very blood, one of the greatest, best homages to Life: to the sheer awe and terror of it, and the sheer wonder and beauty of it.
(In memory of Bob Zeidler. To the friend I would have liked to have, who died on April 2 2005)

Accessories are not just a way to prove that you know the difference between crocodile and patent leather; they create an illusion, whether of youth, money, taste, or a perfect body (preferably all four). The Chic Simple crew has produced the ultimate guide for the coordinately challenged, with great photos (how did they make pictures of shoes so fascinating?), clever and catty copy ("You can tell when a Hollywood actress wants to seem more than just another pretty face: she starts wearing professorial glasses in public, and her perceived IQ jumps several points"), and great shopping advice.

Perfect for ideas.......2001-01-19
This little book is well worth every penny. The pictures are gorgeous, and the breadth of ideas is incredible. Even if you just need occasional "help" in deciding what to wear or how to spice up an outfit, Chic Simple Accessories will help.
Outstanding! One of the best accessory books available........2000-11-20
At first glance, this may seem like merely a pretty picture book, but if you take the time to look closer, you will find advice for building a classic, comfortable, versatile wardrobe through the wise use of accessories.
My favorite part of this book is when the authors take one outfit (say, white blouse and black pants) and show it with different accessories. This tactic really illustrates what a difference accessories can make. It also makes me look at my own wardrobe and think how I can achieve different "looks" with accessories rather than buying different clothes.
The other gem of this book is the accessory checklist at the back of the book, divided into categories: basic gear, ornamentation, work, evening, summer, and winter. These two pages are worth the price of the book alone.
Accessories for the Librarian.......1997-06-25
I had been wanting for some time to break out of the dowdy Librarian mode. I decided to start my transformation with a book on the basics on accessories and Accessories (Chic Simple) fit the bill perfectly. It has wonderful pictures which enhance the copy making it more understandable and interesting. It also has information about where to purchase every item in the book and how to maintain the items after purchase. It tries to stay with the classics and tells you how to handle the trends. After reading this book, I feel ready to make accessory purchases that will make me look and feel confident

Hmm...is this really necessary?.......2000-01-05
A pretty book in the Chic tradition--the ultimate bathroom book, a great gift for a housewarming or bridal shower, more eye candy to display, but as far as usefulnes...? Who doesn't know the difference between soap and bath gel? Or what to stock up on or bring when traveling...kind of common sense don't ya think?
And minus the photos it would be one boring book. Pretty pointless.
If you are a sucker for cool pictures like I am, and love the glossy style the Chic series is noted for, then this is a great addition to your growing library. If not? Pass on it!

Positively Crochet, Mary Jane Hall.......2007-09-27
Positively Crochet! Our bookshelves have long awaited current, stylish crochet pattern books. Not only does this collection meet the demands, it goes even further with Mary Jane's well written patterns, shaping tips and solid suggestions for the beginner as well as advanced crocheter. Packed with many months worth of projects I am excited to add this to my home library and look forward to starting many of the designs. Deborah Spigner
What a Marvelous Book!.......2007-09-22
I love it! Lots of patterns to choose from, a wide variety of sizes, and projects that even appeal to my 13-year-old Gothling, with appropriate color changes, of course. Most pattern books contain between 10 and 25 patterns; this one has a full 50 to choose from, as well as words of encouragement on every page. The patterns range from simple to more complex but well explained; it's a book you can grow with if you are a beginner. A more advanced crochet artist might gravitate to the more complex patterns, but the wide selection means there's a choice of a quick, simple project for a weekend in addition to fashion tops. I highly recommend it to any crocheter.
Another reviewer said to avoid the book if you didn't like to see the word "God;" I'm not a Christian but found the word non-specific enough not to ruffle my feathers -- and I have practice at feather ruffling! I like the positive quotes. It keeps the book upbeat and dynamic.
Excellent Book, Positive Notes and Great Designs.......2007-09-20
I really like this book. I'm very particular about crochet books. Alot of times, I buy the book and I'm disappointed. With Positively Crochet, I found several items that I wanted to make (which I'm currently making the tangerine top AND the easy shrug). I also love the positive notes in the book. I was thrilled to hear from the author on my blog! She was willing to help me if I had any questions! Wow, most authors wouldn't give you the time of the day! This is one of the must have books! Disappointed.......2007-09-18
I pre-ordered this book hoping to receiving a great collection of wearables and classic, simple designs that I could refer to again and again. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.
I'm a 23 year old, pretty experienced crocheter, and I'd consider myself on the classic side of "hip." There were maybe 2-3 designs in this book I'd even consider making, let alone wearing. Like another reviewer mentioned, way too many jewelry patterns and scarves bulking it up.
And maybe I'm in the minority, but I found the "positive sayings" tacky and distracting.
I regret buying this, but I'll keep it for the 2 patterns I may make.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!.......2007-09-14
I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I originally ordered this book for the sweater pattern on the front. I have been looking for a wearable to something to my daughter -- she extremly particular -- this sweater was perfect. Once I got the book, I was so excited by the patterns in it. This was well worth my money and I am extremely pleased. I had shown the book to seven people in two days and each ordered it or went and purchased it. Great job!!

the covers the best picture.......2006-12-18
I was disappointed in this book. The quality of so many of the paintings seemed rushed or sloppy. The cover is by far the best painting.

ASIN: 0028638301 |
Book Description
Not everyone gets to play Major League baseball. In fact, not everyone has played Little League or even pick-up games. But everyone can play fantasy baseball--and it seems as if almost everyone does, with the huge boost the game received via the Internet. Fantasy Baseball is the greatest thing to happen to baseball fans since the invention of the sport itself, according to Michael Zimmerman, author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fantasy Baseball. You are the one with all the power--you are the owner, general manager, and manager in a league of your own. See how to draft real major league players to form your own team. Use real stats from each real season. Use your own money. And if you win, you own the right of all rights: bragging. And if you stink? You have only yourself to blame.
Customer Reviews:
A personal memoir of the author.......2000-08-22
This book was not a complete waste of time. You do learn about the author's experience in a particular type of fantasy baseball league, but it leaves a lot to be desired. He does not really instruct the reader in how to make themselves a better fantasy baseball owner. This was my first year in fantasy baseball and had to really learn as I went. This book was not a big help. I could find out how to play from the rules of the game I played. I need a book that covers various types and variations of fantasy leagues, Challenge, Roto, 5X5, Sabermetrics, and fantasy point types. If you are new to fantasy baseball I guess it gives you a look at one owner in one league, but you really have to talk to other owners, and read all kinds of tip-sheets and articles on ESPN.com and other fantasy sites. It's a lot bigger world than the author lets you in on.
Great Bokk.......2000-04-03
I really liked this book. Go buy it.

Fun and Effective.......2007-09-26
The focus of this book is in using, what I like to call "tangible metaphors" to persuade. The author provides examples where he used magic tricks. However, you may use other skills you posses to bring your point across by "showing" instead of "telling". And sometimes, the only skill required is a little bit of creative imagination, rather than any special dexterity.
Years ago, a friend frequently took me to different parties with him. As soon as we'd get to a party, he'd get out of sight and embark upon seducing other women. I wondered why he took me with him if his intent was to go skirt-chasing, but I didn't want to say anything. Instead, I cut one skirt short and decided to wear it to the next party. It worked like a charm - my friend stayed glued to me the entire time to protect me from other men.
Words have magic in them, but since people intepret words in different ways, and you may not always know what words would have the greatest emotional impact upon another, guiding your listener through an actual experience may prove to be much more effective, and you may have way more fun in the process.
Excellent read.......2007-05-12
A wel presented well written book. Lots of Mmmmmm moments. Some really clever stuff in this book.
You NEED To Read This Book.......2007-04-17
I have had the opportunity of meeting Joel Bauer in person. Let me just say that he is a great person who genuinely cares about people.
He spoke at an event I attended and I am sure that the majority of the people in attendance followed him to the back of the room to buy his kit.
But did he stop there? Oh no, he came back that evening, on his own time, and talked to whoever was interested, until the room had to be closed and believe it or not everyone moved to the hallway of the hotel where Joel continued to speak until almost 2:00 AM. I had never seen anything like this before or since!
This book gives you tips, hints and techniques to become a more persuasive and influential communicator. If you are willing to put some of these "transformational mechanisms" to work, you will see results.
Joel Bauer is the real deal!!

If you are looking for scientific explanations of emotional and psychological triggers that have been driving all human kind to action since the cave man, skip this book and pick up a copy of Robert Cialdini's "Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion."
But if you are looking for real-life tips you can start using immediately to grab and hold attention of your audiences or clients, you will find this book a treasure chest!
Joel Bauer and Mark Levy give practical tips and tools for commanding attention and persuading people who are numbed by millions of marketing messages, bored by their busy lives, and jaded by being over-promised and under-delivered to in the past.
After reading this book I started using several of the entertainment and fun-focused strategies and tactics to command attention of my audiences and drive home hard to explain, complex concepts. It works like a charm!

If Magic Is Your Thing..........2007-02-21
This book was short on useable content and is geared more for the person wanting gimicks and tricks to attract people passing by on a busy trade show floor. I think that some of the tricks he shares do have value in driving your point home but pursuading people who don't want to be persuaded... so, so. I'm glad he made tons of money as a magician/entertainer and just made more on a less than stellar writing venture. I believe this could be used as a platform to begin being creative in you own enviroment.
