A run-of-the-mill assassin gets bitten by some kind of demon, and instead of being dead, the attack left him with telepathy and x-ray vision, making him an even better hit man. That's Tommy Monaghan's story, and from there it gets better and better. The second collection of Hitman comic books is much stronger and much more consistent than the original volume. 10,000 Bullets is a tale of vengeance and honor. Writer Garth Ennis has a kind of magic in which he takes characters who live firmly outside of the conventional and then infuses them with a heightened morality. In Tommy Monaghan you'll find a character you can both cheer for and feel sorry for, because he's not a stereotyped killer--he's a three-dimensional human being. This book's only real limitation is that some of the characters, specifically Monaghan's new girlfriend, are introduced in the previous collection. Nevertheless, 10,000 Bullets is an exciting read even for newcomers to Ennis's work. --Jim Pascoe

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
The title is obviously a parody, and there is a parody here, as the Hitman is hired to get rid of a superhero gone over the line, called Nightfist.
One problem with being a killer for hire is that when you kill people, it can certainly make other people very unhappy. A mob boss is one of the not happy people, and he puts a contract out on Tommy.
More Ennis fun.......2001-07-16
Tommy Monaghan is a Hitman with a conscience who's blessed with x-ray vision, telepathy and one hell of a skill-level. He'll shoot any meta-human you want (he doesn't take contracts on regular people because 'where's the sport in that') as long as you bring the money, AND he HAS to see the target as 'bad people'. Otherwise, no deal. In this book (which collects Hitman #4-8) the tables are turned when a mob boss from Tommy's past wants revenge and puts a price on HIS head. A hitman, who sees himself as the best in the world, called Johnny Navarone takes the job. Meanwhile Tommy himself, who doesn't suspect a thing so far, takes on a contract of his own. He's supposed to kill of a corrupt vigilante named 'Nightfist' (which is really meant as a mocking of superhero-comics) for the price of $10.000. The assignment turns out to be a set-up and Tommy gets in a world of trouble. Navarone then does something he really shouldn't have. Now IT'S PERSONAL ! From here the story turns into a kill-fest. Finally the book concludes with #8 which is a "Final Night" tie-in. The guys spend a night hanging out but when they realize the sun isn't coming up, and Superman's on the news, they decide to stick together in the bar to wait for the end of the world. They pass the time by telling each other about the time they came closest to death.
Compared to the previous Hitman collection (the one that hasn't got a name) this one contains a lot less one-liners and a heck of a lot more action and graphic violence. Off course there ARE still one-liners and the humorlevel is up to score (it IS a Ennis title after all) but you just have to look harder for it (just LOOK at the characters, it's a blast). It's a great addition to the Hitman series and people who like the typical Ennis' humor, and don't neccesarily need a story to be too complicated will have a lot of fun with it. That's mainly what going on, action and humor and it works out very good. The one downside this book has though is that it relates a lot to the previous collection, so you should really get that one first or at least read it prior to this one (or you'll miss out on things here and there). But that's also a good book so that's not a waste either.
Continuing the bloody fun.......2001-04-05
This book, the second collection of Garth Ennis' 'Hitman' series sees the character of Tommy Monaghen (a hitman with superpowers and a fast wit) face major changes in his life. This collection also brings a close to one of the stories introduced in the first collection, as a mob boss (whose dead siamise twin's corpse decays on his bodies other half) sends a smooth assassin to deal with Tommy. All this, and a pretty funny jab at super-hero comics. '100,000 Bullets', an obvious play on Azzerello's '100 Bullets', is a fun read and a solid continuation of the 'Hitman' story.
A masterpiece.......1999-10-13
By far, this is one of the greatest stories I have ever read. Comic book or otherwise. Action, heart, humour, and some of the best dialogue ever written. The scene with the bathtub... my God... it almost ripped my heart out. Garth Ennis is truly one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.
And You Thought Tarantino Was Violent..........1998-05-11
Even if you've never read Hitman before in your life, this boook is still great. From the introduction by Kevin Smith of Clerks and Chasing Amy fame, to the final chapter which offers an unconventional tie-in to your standard DC "end of the world" crossover, this book is great. If the first three pages don't make you laugh, this book might not be for you... but if you're in the mood for Siamese twin mosters whose other halves are dead, a motherlode amount of blood and killing, funny-as-hell war stories, the world's stupidest superhero and the only gangsta in America who doesn't swear, this book is for you. Ennis shows what he can do when freed from the high intellectual lofiness of Preacher (that's sarcasm, son.)

THE HOUSTON POST
Lewis Grizzard remembers 1962. But a lot's happened since then, and he's in the mood to discuss it all, in the inimitable style that's made him the most popular social commentator to tickle people AND tick them off. From being PC to watching MTV, from rednecks to black militants, from singing the praises of the South to sounding off on the problems of just about everywhere else, nothing and nobody escapes when Grizzard shoots from the lip...and hits the "nekkid" truth every time.

The Best Book Grizzard Ever Wrote .......2006-11-27
It is truly sad that as he reached the apex of his book writing career (in this book), Lewis Grizzard left us. This book was released in October of 1992, and Lewis died in March 1994. He wrote one more book about the hospital stay that nearly killed him a year later. But Lewis Grizzard went out at his creative peak.
Most of Grizzard's previous works had been collections of his four times per week column in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper. There were a few exceptions, like "Elvis Is Dead And I Don't Feel So Good Myself" (highly recommended), but most were collations of previous material. he made a few exceptions as his career progressed. In 1988, he wrote "Don't Bend Over In The Garden Granny, You Know Them Taters Got Eyes," a book about sex. The next year, he wrote one about golf. In 1990, it was a book written to his late mother (she died in 1989) and his biography, "If I Ever Get Back To Georgia, I'm Gonna Nail My Feet To The Ground."
After another collection of columns release, Grizzard wrote this book that primarily expounded upon his political views. For those who are unaware, he was an unabashed right-wing, trickle down, conservative. But it wasn't that simple.
He wrote about his politics in the context of trying to get a date in the newspaper want ads. He realized at this point that he was among the most politically incorrect persons in America. He also pointed out that any time he praised something about Southern culture, he was ripped as a racist. He correctly noted (for the time frame) that the New York Times and Washington Post have too much public influence. That has since changed, of course, with Al Gore inventing the Internet for the rest of us.
He roars through his views like tax breaks for the rich, get people off welfare, and he really didn't care how hard people had it because he pointed out that charity still begins at home. He did NOT advocate a return to the back of the bus mentality in the pre-civil rights 60s, praising many blacks while pointing out that people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are political opportunists who could really care less about helping out anyone.
One of the highlights of the book was his logical review of Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing." He caps it off by noting, after the pizza place is burned down, 'Did these guys ever stop to think, "Hey, where are we gonna get pizza tomorrow?"' He also had fun with Michael Dukakis, the feminists, and even mused about the Atlanta Braves losing the 1991 World Series was proof that life wasn't fair.
For those who have not read it, he did reveal that there are two issues on which he does not have a right-wing conservative view: abortion (he was reluctantly pro-choice) and gun control (he favored it). And it wasn't revealed until his next book but, yes, Grizzard was a Dittohead.
What does LG mean when he references 1962? It goes back to the Cuban Missile Crisis. He notes that in 1962, he was 16 and slept well, had a pretty girlfriend and all was normal. Arnold Palmer and Sandy Koufax were in their primes. But as the preface says, in 1963 somebody shot the President. Then the Beatles came. And all hell broke loose.
This book is, in fact, a sequel to the aforementioned "Elvis Is Dead And I Don't Feel So Good Myself," written in 1984. Although this book stands fine on its own, the previous book does serve to illuminate a few of his musings.
Enjoy the finest hour of a fine writer.
Souther, Funny, Wonderful............2004-02-10
What can one say about Lewis Grizzard. I wasn't born in 1962, but grew up in the South. I can't get enough of Grizzards stories and humor. He gives insights into the Southern way of life like no one else can. He will be dearly missed and nothing that I can say in this small space would do him justice. I am not old enough to have lived through all the things he writes about, but they make me laugh and think about where my family comes from (he even got me to try fried green tomatoes that I had refuse to try at my mother insistence). I laugh and send each copy of his books home to my Mamma. I have bough three more of his works and can't wait to get started.
I laughed my eyeballs right outta my head........2003-02-24
All Yankees should read this book so you know what we think of you. All Confederates should read this book for a good laugh at them Yankees :) Seriously, this book is excellent, and its got some stuff in it that you might not want your kids to read...these days maybe you don't care. They'll hear it anyway. But this book is so funny and you will love it. One of his best.
I may not be a southerner..........2000-02-25
...but after some years spent living in Slidell, Louisiana, I'm thankful to see a commentator of intelligence and piercing insight blow through the baloney and tell it like it is. This is the closest we're likely to get to an autobiography of Grizzard's early years, and I'm glad to have it in my hands, because it allows us to see what kind of mind produced the stuff the late great man wrote.
True Grizzard Humor! He is truly missed........1997-07-31
Lewis had a way to make us all laugh,... and think. He was truly a son of the south. From his boyhood tails of exploits with Waymon C. Wannamaker and Kathy Sue Loudermilk to his stirring praise of Ronald Reagan's courage after being shot by Hinkley; Lewis relates feelings shared by all. I'm sure he is under a large Magnolia tree above, sittin' with his mom, dad, Daddy Bunn, Grandma Willie and good old Catfish, drinkin' iced tea, eatin' bar-b-que and laughing with us all

Whatever happened to those good ole' days when Coke was just a soft drink and people thought that cholesterol was the stuff that made leaves green? No one could answer this question better than Lewis Grizzard in this 100% original, 100% hilarious stumble down memory lane.
What in the world has gone wrong with America in the last 30 years? Grizzard attempts to analyze this searching question as he explores, compares and contrasts his relationships with women, the various wars we've dabbled in, sex, fame, the women's movement, race relations, politics, and much, much more. In these never before published pieces, Grizzard is doing what he does best: making fun of everything and bringing us a lot of fun in the process.

I haven't Understood Anyhting Since 1962, and Other Nekkid Truths.......2006-02-12
This is a whole hour of looking at a new housing developement and stating it is different than the farm field that used to be here. If you find comfort in being stuck in the past you will love this tape but look for me I the future. Tape was blah but I am a woman and the author does not know what women want.
I haven't understood anything since 1962.......2001-01-22
The first book I have ever read in my 55 years that actually made me laugh out loud while reading. This is the funniest book since the Clinton administration or the Gore/Bush election. Truely hilarious!
Grizzard points out where society went wrong........1999-04-10
Grizzard points out what is wrong with American culture today, and where it started. A good book for anyone with a sense of humor, and a must read for any Good Ol' Southern Boy. Being one myself, I agreed with almost everything he had to say, and found myself rolling with laughter at most of it.

Book Description
Images of African Americans in our culture abound--on television, in films, on the radio, and in newsprint. Whether in works by African Americans--most notably popular music, film, and to a growing degree, television programs--or works about African Americans from documentaries to news coverage--strong images pervade our public consciousness. Mediated Messages and African American Culture is the first book to examine these images and messages as a whole. Bringing together works by leading scholars, this collection examines such vital topics as the relationship between black men and the police, the state of the African American press, and the perpetuation of images of African Americans as poor, violent, and undereducated. Timely case studies and the combination of theory and practice make this text both up-to-date and thorough in its analysis of the image and portrayal of African Americans in the media. Mediated Messages and African American Culture will be of great interest to students who study popular culture, black popular culture, African American history, and the media. The book's critical discussion about the treatment of African Americans in the media is unique in its coverage and depth.

Book Description
Partly because they are the objects of such intense adulation by fans, popular musicians remain strangely enigmatic figures, shrouded in mythology. This book looks beyond the myth and examines the diverse roles music makers have had to adopt in order to go about their work: designer, ventriloquist, star, delegate of the people. The musician is a divided subject and jack of all trades. However the story does not end here. Arguing against that strand in cultural studies which deconstructs all claims for authorship by the individual artist, Toynbee suggests that creativity should be reconceived rather than abandoned. What's needed is a sense of "the radius of creativity" within which musicians work, an approach that takes into account both the embedded collectivism of popular music practice and the institutional power of the music industries. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical positions, as well as examining musical texts from across the history of twentieth century pop, this groundbreaking book develops a powerful case for the importance of production in contemporary culture. It will be an invaluable source for students of culture and media studies, music and the performing arts.
Customer Reviews:
Good.......2006-05-20
This is a book that will guide you through the secret world of the music producer, of the hit musicians, of the aggressive promoting and of the music mogul. It explains everything you need to know about the three main parts of the music industry: the musicians, creativity and the institutions the govern this world. Using step by step structure with an easy to understand language this book should not be found missing from any musician's pocket. I recommend this book for all those who want more out of their careers.

This book deserves a place alongside the many wonderful tricks that James Randi has pulled off in his amazing career. He's gotten 24 of the finest magicians in the world to contribute favorite tricks to this collection. Some can be done with little or no practice, others will take some rehearsal. All are fiendishly clever and many are very funny besides. Contributors range from David Copperfield to Penn & Teller. Plus, of course, the Amazing Randi himself. Randi also treats readers to profiles on the contributing prestidigitators. Grab this book and prepare to bedazzle and deceive.
