Creativity in Context: Update to the Social Psychology of Creativity
ASIN: 0415314534 |
Book Description
How is it possible to think new thoughts? What is creativity and can science explain it?
When The Creative Mind: Myths and Mechanisms was first published, Margaret A. Boden's bold and provocative exploration of creativity broke new ground. Boden uses examples such as jazz improvisation, chess, story writing, physics, and the music of Mozart, together with computing models from the field of artificial intelligence to uncover the nature of human creativity in the arts, science and everyday life.
The Second Edition of The Creative Mind has been updated to include recent developments in artificial intelligence, with a new preface, introduction and conclusion by the author. It is an essential work for anyone interested in the creativity of the human mind.
Customer Reviews:
The wrong approach?.......2006-01-15
The idea of seeking to better understand human creativity through comparing it to certain kinds of computer operation , I must admit, seemed to me , at the outset , less than exciting. This is not to say that the Boden approach of exploring conceptual spaces in the mind, transforming them through computational concepts drawn from artificial intelligence, and through this revealing certain insights into human creativity- is totally barren or meaningless. I myself do not really feel I have the qualification to say, whether some of these insights might be useful or not.
What I can say , is that this kind of analysis seems to me , not really relevant to understanding the kinds of literary creation I know a certain amount about. Consider the following lines of poetry, or for that matter any lines of poetry. " Shall I compare thee to a summer day/ Thou art more lovely and more temperature/ Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May/ And Summer's lease hath all too short a date/ ......
The language of poetry cannot really be translated into mathematical language, whether it is gobbyldegook or not. Nor I would argue can the language of any kind of real "Literature"
The kind of explanations given for Creativity in Literary work here seem to me to be ' reductions' to a 'lower level'. The complexities and ambiguities of literary language, the vast hinting and suggesting which move much poetry it seems to me, are wholly out of keeping with a clear mathematical language , analogue or digital.
To put this another way, this book does not give me 'the feeling' that the kinds of creativity I appreciate are even touched upon by its concepts.
Superb.......2004-07-27
The nature and origins of creativity is of great interest in the field of human psychology, and research on creativity has occupied the time of many individuals. This book, written by an individual well recognized in the field, gives a fascinating account of her ideas on creativity, and has been a major influence for those attempting to realize creativity in non-human machines. Throughout its pages, the author attempts not only to define creativity, but also to give criteria for distinguishing new ideas that are creative from simply new ideas. The most important goal of the book though is to frame the nature of creativity in a computational paradigm.
Philosophers, writers, artists, musicians, and others in the humanities will perhaps frown on the author's project to use computational concepts to assist in the understanding of human creativity. Many of those who work in these professions will point to "intuition" as being the source of creative ideas and works, regardless of their vague understanding of this term. The author demands, rightfully, a clarification of the notion of intuition, but she does not seek to do this herself in the book, but instead looks to the computational paradigm to settle the issue of human and machine creativity. She argues at length throughout the book that not only can this paradigm assist in the understanding of human creativity, but that non-human machines can appear to be creative and can also recognize creativity. The question as to whether non-human machines really are creative is also addressed towards the end of book.
Having a computational model of creativity would allow the design of machines that could produce novel scientific theories, musical compositions, architectural designs, and works of art. It would also give those working in the cognitive sciences greater insight into the understanding of the mechanisms involved in human creative thinking, such as the ability to make analogies, formulate complicated mathematical ideas, or classify patterns. In addition, having a generic computational model of creativity would give insight on how to create novel ideas in a manner that is independent of the domain or context in which one is working. Machines could thus be built that would be able to generate creative ideas in many different domains. For example, a machine that generates new mathematical ideas would also be able to create interesting works of art. This would be a major advance in machine intelligence if such machines could be built.
In the book, the author introduces two notions of creativity that she feels is necessary for her study. One of these is called 'P-creativity', and is a personal and psychological notion. The other is called 'H-creativity' and is a historical notion. Given an idea that arises in a particular person, this idea would be called P-creative if the person could not have had it before. It is irrelevant how many other people already have the same idea. An idea is called H-creative if it is P-creative and no one in human history has ever had it before. As can be seen from the definition, it would be difficult to check whether an idea is really H-creative, since it would require quite an extensive statistical survey. But such a survey would be unnecessary, for the author contends that there is no theory that can explain solely H-creative ideas, but that since H-creative ideas are also P-creative, an explanation of P-creative ideas would also apply to H-creative ideas.
According to the author, the ability to distinguish first-time novelty from genuine originality involves an understanding of what generative processes were involved in the production of the idea. A "novel" idea is one that can be described or produced by the same set of generative rules as other familiar ideas, whereas a genuinely original idea is one that cannot. Therefore, the designation of ideas as "genuinely creative" is always done relative to a specific generative system.
Conceptual spaces, in the author's view, are styles of thinking, and creativity must be thought of in terms of the mapping, exploration, and transformation of conceptual spaces. Conceptual spaces are used to organize and give structure to a particular domain of interest, such as checkers game or a Bach concerto. The structure of a conceptual space can be mapped by forming mental representations of it, and these maps can be use to explore them and to change them if necessary. As one example of this, the author quotes the investigations of tonal harmony in post-Renaissance Western music. The dropping of the home-key constraint in tonal music transformed the conceptual space of tonal music to create the conceptual space of atonal music. The deliberate dropping of a constraint is one method by which conceptual spaces can be generated. Another method is to negate a constraint. The author illustrates this method with a discussion of the discovery of the benzene ring due to Friederich Kekule.
A highly interesting and totally unexpected discussion in the book involves the connection of unpredictability with creativity. Since H-creative ideas are ones that have not appeared before in human history, they are unpredicted. The author emphasizes though that this does not mean that H-creative ideas are unpredictable. The role of serendipity, chance, and coincidences in creative thinking are discussed in terms of the computational paradigm. The author concludes from this discussion that creativity cannot be due to chance alone, but that chance with judgment can. The author also discusses three different notions of randomness, with the intent of shedding light on the belief that determinism is incompatible with creativity. These three notions are labeled 'absolute', 'explanatory', and 'relative'. The first is total absence of any order or structure within the domain; the second the lack of any explanation or cause, and the third lack of any order relevant to some specific consideration. Human creativity is relatively unpredictable the author asserts, and it is easy to believe this considering our folklore understanding of it. The computational paradigm of the author has assisted our understanding of it, but more research is needed.

COGNITIVE ASPECTS OF COMPUTATION REVIVIFIED!.......2000-03-26
The past few decades have witnessed enormous growth in the field computer applications.Automation has entered almost every field of human endeavor. With new advances in Applied Electronics supplimented by innovative Software designs, high end computing has been able to mimic human capabilities if not replace them. With the development of Artificial Intellegence applications, computers seem to simulate human decision making capabilities as well. All over the world Neural Network researchers are exploring the possibilities of creating an electronic nervous system which they think(strong AI) would replace human capability. This approach has evoked the intrest of scientests from diverse fields like Psychology,Philosophy,Neurology,Cybernetics...giving birth to an entirely new field called"Cognitive Science".As one explores deep into the human mind and the complex functionings of the brain the very term Artificial Intelligence seems to be a contradiction in terms, these days a newly coined term "Synthetic Intelligence" is much used which clearly reflects the inter disciplinary nature of the field, here Dr.Mervin Minsky's definition of AI holds good:"AI is the science of making machines do things that requires intelligence if done by humans". Dr.Margaret Boden has done extensive research in the field of Cognitive Science at the University of Sussex and is considered as one of the greatest authorities in the field of Cognitive aspects of computing. This is a very delicate area because it involves lot of moral, philosophical and ethical issues. In this pioneering work she examines creativity from the scientific perspective delving deep into the conceptual spaces of mind and goes on to propose with proven convictions that what is the need of the hour is the synthesis of Computational Models of Mind and Computer Designs inspired by the Biological Functionings of the Human Machine. This calls forth for immense interdisciplinary interaction at all levels. While advocating ths she does not forget the essential underlying reality of consciousness, the charm and wonder of spontaneous creativity.Dr.Boden's work removes the walls that seperate different fields of scientific pursuits.I'm just reminded of Dr.john Snyder's words.."If one were to build a computer with as many electronic interconnections as we have in the human brain, that computer will occupy the whole area of the state of Texas!". Dr.Boden approaches the essential gift of being human ie:Human Creativity with deep reverence and precisely for this very reason we get to understand in scientific terms the best in us and machines!

Book Description
Conceiving a "self-portrait dress" was the charge given to world-famous architects, designers, musicians, and artists by Alessandro Guerriero, and the results were an exercise in cross-genre creativity that would stun a traditional runway front row. A winner of Italy's highest award for industrial design, the Compasso d'Oro, Guerriero received sketches from 30 of the most innovative minds in a variety of fields, then recruited design students from Milan's Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti to realize the fashions. A touring exhibition of the clothes, on view originally at the Triennale di Milano and moving to New York, London, and Tokyo, displayed the outfits on glass resin sculptures representing the creator in real scale. There are dresses that evoke memories, dresses using reflective materials that change with the light, dresses that explode in waterfalls of multicolored threads, and dresses that dissolve into invisibility. Among the participants were musicians Antony, the Aluminum Group, Jimi Tenor, and Devendra Banhart; architects Johanna Grawunder, Hariri & Hariri, Ettore Sottsass, Peter Wilson, and Makoto Sei Watanabe; and artists William Alsop, Meschac Gaba, Choi Jeong-Hwa, Mimmo Paladino, and Enrica Borghi.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty darn good!.......2007-10-01
The New Avengers have their hands full. There are 44 escaped super-villains that need putting back in prison, and with their reduced resources it will be a real chore. But to make matters even more confusing, it seems that the central pivot of events is a mysterious super named the Sentry. Just who is the Sentry, and where did he come from?
Overall, I found this to be a pretty darn good book. I've been pretty disappointed with the recent Avengers graphic novels, but with this one, the Marvels seem to be hitting their stride. The storyline is quite interesting, and the illustration work is excellent - including the vintage-appearing flashbacks to earlier comics. I enjoyed this graphic novel and don't hesitate to recommend it!
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Coming out of the mini-series a while back, the Avengers have to work out what to do with the most powerful hero going, who is serious schizoid, and his own and everybody else's worst enemy.
So, of course they sign him up, after he helps keep them alive in the Breakout.
This does not mean he will not destroy the planet afterwards, but that is a risk they have to take, unfortunately.
Worthy Follow-up to Jenkins's "The Sentry" Mini-Series.......2007-08-27
This "New Avengers" trade paperback adds some interesting twists to the Sentry mythos and firmly entrenches the Sentry into the Marvel Universe. If you were a fan of Paul Jenkins's original Marvel Knights mini-series (The Sentry), then this book is necessary reading. It's less about the New Avengers than the Sentry, so if you're looking to see Wolverine or Iron Man in action, this one might not do it for you.
who is the sentry.......2007-06-19
a character, marvel has, absolutely, no idea of what to do with apparently! The sentry is this man with a "Superman style" of crime-fighting which maybe the reason he's not used often. Copyright laws, I'm sure. The Sentry is an interesting story yes but if it was a movie I would recommend you rent it.
Great Creative Team.......2007-06-14
This is the same Creative team behind Civil War. The art, as everyone points out is excellent, that's just what Steve McNiven does, he's phenomenal. The story is good, it involves a lot of characters outside of the New Avengers, most notably the X-Men's Emma Frost. The scenes with the Wrecker is essentially comic relief meant to break the more serious tension of the main story.
So why didn't I give it 5 stars? 2 reasons. The first is because it's short. Only 4 issues, and then they stick 'The Avengers Most Wanted' Case files in the back, which is a list of the 44 villains who escaped from the Raft in the first arc. If this went anywhere, it should have gone with the first volume of New Avengers, or better yet been packaged in as an add-on for a hard back that encompuses both volumes. It has no place here, and is really only here to justify the $15 Marvel is charging for it. It would be one thing if the pictures in the case files were new images by Finch and McNiven and co, but they're just recylced images from previous books, somewhat informative for new readers, but so many of these characters are F list, nobody should be reading about them in the first place. (The Brothers Grimm? The Slug? Mandrill? Armadillo?) Please.
The other thing I didn't like about it, and this is minor, is the cover. The image Amazon lists is not the cover for the paperback version, it's some random group shot by McNiven that really doesn't look that great. I would have much prefered the cover of New Avengers #10 to have graced this collection.

Menken does it again (or rather "did"!).......2000-03-31
One of Menken's timeless masterpieces, the songs of "The Little Shop of Horror" cover many aspects of music - from good ol' fashioned Rock'n'Roll in the theme song to some serious blues in "Feed me" and rather heavy chords in "Don't feed the plants" A must have for all Menken fans, it gives one the opportunity to view his early work, in this case, the 80's. Ony of my friends has a copy and in fact I've used it more than he has so now I'm looking for my own copy! Get this!

wow!.......2005-12-05
In a town, you see a comic shop, you think it is cool but no! It is scary!
WHOA!.......2005-03-19
You love comic books. One day, on a quiet town you notice Milo's Comic book shop. When you go upstairs, you become a superhero but you have to defeat monsters. When you go to the dungeon, you have to battle MILO THE MUTANT!. This is your choice. You decide which adventure to choose!
Don't Go to new Comic Shops and Don't Read This Book.......2003-11-17
Okay your this kid who goes in a comic shop and you touch this rack and turn into a comic or you can go down the stairs and get stuck in a maze. How about the last choice don't read this book. At first glance it seems like it would be good but it's not. If you turn into a comic it seems incomplet and the best ending leaves you puzzled. And when you get stuck in the maze well the whole storyline of that is dumb. The only reson it gets a 2 is because you might if you tried get a small bit of entertainment but not much and unless you love Goosebumps and have read every other Goosebumps book ever three times would you want to buy this book. R.L. Stine tried but didn't live up to his other books this had so much promise but was only disappointing. Readers just skip this one.
The Comic book shop of horrors.......2002-06-17
I read Goosebumps: The Comic book shop of horrors, I give it five stars. This book was awesome, it was about a kid who was 12 years in age and touched one of he comics on the back rack of a horrorful comic book store! He would either do that or go in the basement and get glomfed, whatever you choose!
You Make The Choices.......2001-06-22
In this Goosebumps book you are walking down the street when you see a new comic book shop.Way cool!So you go in,you see a bunch of webs and dirt. You don't know but something really weird is going to happen to you,you become a superhero.Throughout the book you meet villians and deal with dangerous things. The cool thing is that you,the reader, make the decisions.I recomend this item to comic book fans.

Based on a screenplay by Howard Ashman.......2004-02-07
This book is more like a placeholder. It is novelization book that is not really a novelization or a film script. Mostly I ties monochrome pictures that are sills from the Rick Moranis (1986) movie that was based from the play "The Little Shop of Horrors!"
It is specifically designed more as a keepsake than a stand alone book.
For those interested it also contains a special appearance by Steve martin as the sadist dentist.
In the original Jonathan Haze (1960) version, the dentist's victim was played by Jack Nicholson.
Basic story is during an eclipse of the sun, an alien arrives in the shape of flora. Seymour adopts the plant and names it Audrey II. Seymour gains fame and fortune but at a price.
Little Shop Of Fun!.......2001-07-30
This book is a great movie tie in for the movie " Little Shop Of Horrors". There are black and white photos from the 1983 movie throughout the book that go along with the dialogue and descriptions. Reading this book provides an experience very similar to that of watching the movie. The story of Seymour Krelborn battling the evil man eating plant Audrey 2 is a classic! This is a comedy/horror story, and is extremely unique. This book is a must have for all fans of the movie!

Play it as it is!.......2001-05-20
This is one of the best guitar books I've ever seen, both because of it's music (being from Iron Maiden explains everything) and speacially because of its strictness! It's an authentic guitar transcription. If you are a guitarist and Iron Maiden fan I recommend it to you. Take in consideration that the songs are not easy to play and learn though... you'll probably get a bit frustrated with that, but, hell, I'm rating the book, not the user :-)
Eric's X Factor Review.......2000-04-14
I think this book really is just awesome. One reasons is that Dave Murray is just the best guitarist. Another reason is that it's just great to play the right notes to a Iron Maiden song because Iron Maiden's is just the best and these people on the tab web sites make the notes all wrong and it just pisses me off, you know. This is actually a funny reason why the book is cool, the Eddie on the cover is just amazing and freaky. This is why I think the book kicks total arse. Hope you like it, PEACE OUT and UP THE IRONS!

This is how Oriental D&D books should be........2004-12-01
The only fault in this book is that it is written in archaic 1st Edition D&D rules, which is not that easily adapted to 3.5. But this book is worth a translation, because it is far superior to its modern counterpart.
The rules for new races & classes (including ninja and kensai) are much better presented. The martial arts system is a munchkin's dream (It's pathetically easy for anyone to start doing 3d10 punches), but unlike it's 3e successor, its rich in flavor and easy to advance in a far more logical manner. The Wu Jen have never been done as well since this edition, and they have many great spells in the book. As an added bonus, they used a new setting for OA, instead of retrofitting everything to Rokugan, which severely crippled the 3e book.
A must have for any RPG collection.
One of Gygax's last rulebooks.......2000-05-02
Here it is, the most coveted AD&D hardcover in existence - not only for its rarity, but for the excellence of its rules! Here, you get 128 pages of how to play ninjas, samurai, wu-jen, and more; the elaborate Honor system, oriental magic, and the unique monsters and treasures of Kara-Tur, all in one beautiful reference! The golden age of the 1st edition game, here in one volume.
The Best Forgotten Realms book ever........1999-12-26
This book is fantastic, and adds so much depth to the campaign. It has everything you need to run an Oriental Adventure, or make characters in an oriental setting. TSR has yet to duplicate in any other book the remarkebly well balanced rules of this book. For example, the Ninja in Oriental Adventures is more inetersting, better devolped, and more enjoyable to paly with only a few pages of coverage than anything in the 2nd edition complete book of Ninjas. IF you can find it, buy it, you will not regret it. The only drawbacks are that A) the book is out of print, and B) AD&D is moving to 3rd edition, and Oriental Adventures exists solely as a 1st edition book, so the rule converstaion may or may not proove difficult.

Free Money for Entrepreneuers.......2007-08-09
Excellent sourcebook for anyone wanting to set up a business or find more funding for their existing business.
Save your money or spend it better elsewhere.......2007-06-05
The majority of the entries in this book are for loans, not grants. I think that Mr. Lesko should entitle his books more honestly, such as ingredient labels for foods must be written, with the largest amount first, and in descending order. People would then realize that grants, or other "free money" entries, are last on the list.
I'm sure there are better, more honest books out there that truly do list a multitude of grants for entrepreneurs -- or for anyone else, for that matter.
One thing I will say that I think is great about this book is that there are plenty of educational sources for those who wish to go into business for themselves but have no background or knowledge of it.
realy is free money.......2007-01-05
this book is well worth the price. you could pay companies thousands to find you a few grants or you could do it you self and with a little work find twice as many. I strongly recomend this book.
Free Money et al. by Matthew Lesko.......2005-11-17
This work lists critical sources of funds for small business
entrepreneurs and others. The sources are provided for the
federal government and states. The author describes strategies for
raising funds for the purchase of property through HUD and a variety of government programs on the federal and state levels.
Classic sources of information are as follows:
- 800FEDINFO
- advoc4 disabled.state
- Health 800 522 5006
- 84.200 education funding in areas of national need
The work is set forth simply and the price is affordable.
A strength of this work is that the author provides a state-by-
state breakdown of the funding sources together with contact
persons and telephone numbers.
