Jackson Pollock's paintings capture the essence of movement and challenge typical notions of representation. The
Fate of a Gesture argues that Pollock's work overshadowed and directed the course of postwar American Painting. Not to be confused with a survey of this era in art history, Ratcliff deals specifically with the boundless and infinite quality of the influential gesture as a symbol of America itself. Avoiding a common aggrandizement of the artist, Ratcliff's thought-provoking text allows readers to draw conclusions of their own.
Book Description
Flinging his colors onto the canvas, pouring and dripping his paints in a quintessentially American gesture, Jackson Pollock redefined the art of painting. It was the fate of Pollock's gesture to be mimicked, modified, and denied by artists of immense stature. Drawing from twenty years of experience as an art critic in New York, Carter Ratcliff maps the Manhattan art world, revisiting the world of studios, galleries and artist's bars where these personalities met and clashed. Over the story looms the monumental and tragic figure of Pollock, the measure of all who have felt compelled to challenge him.
Customer Reviews:
Very insightful book.......2007-06-11
If you have any interest in Abstract Expressionism and New York school of painting, pick up this highly readable and well written book. The book traces the origins of American modern art to the expressive gestures of Jackson Pollack in his drip paintings. In some ways this gesture is replicated in the book, as chapters seem to jump/ merge from one subject or painter to another without reason, yet, in fact, is building up a glorious picture of the New York artists world at a particular point of time. Highly recommended.
Please..........2007-04-16
Give me a break. This mish-mash of secondhand information is little more than easily readable. With little regard to chronology, Ratcliff separates the various artistic trends of postwar America using representative artists. All of the stories in this book have been told before, and better, by the artists and critics themselves. This kind of 'art journalism' (not unlike Calvin Tomkins' work) is informative, to be sure, but in quite a superficial and unsatisfying way. I suggest reading Irving Sandler's 'American art of the 1960s' for something as informative and enjoyable but with some opinions and insight.
Follows post-world war two american art after Jackson Polloc.......2001-03-14
Jackson Pollock is seen as the greatest American artist ever, because of his poured paintings of the late 40's and early 50's. Dying in a drunken car crash in 1956, he left behind a legacy of American artists who weren't driven by European art tastes. The Abstract Expressionist movement, large canvases, and Pop Art are all traced back to Pollock.
Also includes chapters about Rauschenberg, Johns, de Koonig, and Warhol, among others

An exceptional entry in the series........2007-02-28
Rene Goscinny, Asterix and the Roman Agent (Orion, 1970)
Asterix and Obelix are back, and this time Caesar, desperate to crush the final stronghold of Gaulish resistance, releases a slick-talking prisoner and tells him he'll have his freedom if he can find some way to bring the Gaulish village under control. Can slick talking and manipulation succeed where everything else has failed? As usual, it's an amusing, if somewhat shallow and predictable, story with great wordplay. It's easy, it's fun, you'll like it. *** ½
Green Monsters.......2007-02-06
"Asterix and the Roman Agent" is a psychological story, mostly set in the village. Jealousy is made when a man, a Roman Agent, comes to the village on Vitalstatistix's birthday and gives Asterix a vase.
Excellent Asterix adventure.......2007-02-03
I regard this as probably the best of the Asterix albums. The french title is "La zizanie" and I don't know whether there is an exact english word for zizanie. It means something that makes people angry at every other people. And that is what the gaul village suffers as a particularly despicable roman agent specialized in creating zizanie is sent by Caesar. Basically, he tries to made the other gauls envious and jealous of Asterix status as a hero. Once the village is divided, it would be easier to conquer. And the agent almost succeeds. Only when Asterix threatens to leave the village, the rest of the gauls come back to their senses. The action happens almost all the time in the village and in the suffering roman garrisons surrounding it. An excellent album.
Divide and Rule.......2002-07-02
Julius Caesar's opponents in the Roman Senate are putting him under increasing ridicule, as a result of the continued resistance of the tiny village in the north of Gaul, which refuses to submit to Roman hegemony.
His latest plan involves the use of an agent, who has a remarkable talent to cause enmity and conflict, wherever he goes.
Before he gets to use his cunning in his attempts to neutralize the village, we get to observe his talents, with all who he comes into contact with.
Before long, Tortuous Convulvulus has sown the seeds of slander, jealousy and calumny in the Gaullish village, causing Asterix, Obelix and Getafix to leave the village.
Can our friends once more foil the Romans and preserve the independence of the village?
This Asterix album comes complete with a handy little battle guide, and once more is filled with the puns and wit we have come to expect from Goscinny and Uderzo.
In this album we get to examine the divide and rule tactics of the Roman Empire, which where used so well by the British Empire, and in the 20th century the Communist Empire. It is also used today with great effect in one party states to neutralize opposition.
If you like Asterix..........2000-07-07
... you will love this book! The story is typical Asterix andthe color and puns are just as side-splitting as ever! Add this oneto your personal comedy library!

Book Description
SimplyDog is a dog's-eye view of modern living. Reh is no ordinary dog. For Reh, life is a journey toward harmony, fulfillment, and self-acceptance, not just mindlessly chasing after cars and happiness. And whether she's dating, coming home from work, or just de-stressing, Reh shares what she learns in a Bark--a phrase that helps her achieve, overcome, or just simply cope.
As Reh demonstrates in SimplyDog, the right attitude can make all the difference. In photos and text, Reh delivers the Bark in 27 lessons we all can relate to: Whatever you do, make it look good; Perfection is overrated; Everyone needs something to believe in.
In real life, Reh is the cherished golden retriever of Maria Peevey, founder of SimplyShe. What Peevey and Weinerman share in their SimplyShe books and cards, Reh now shares in SimplyDog. Her outlook, her hard-won wisdom, and most of all, her bark-based approach to life, will speak eloquently to readers of every species.
Playful, modernist photographs plus humorous text make SimplyDog the perfect gift for the deep-thinking dog lover.
Customer Reviews:
Fun book.......2004-10-16
I normally wouldn't have bought this, since I'm trying to *gasp* cut back on my book purchases (being a college student will do that to a person, sadly). Found it in the dollar bin at my local Petco, and am glad that I did. The way that little life tips are presented, and all the fun pictures...the way that Reh seems to like to stick her face right into the camera is fun!
graduation gift.......2004-06-26
Forget about Oh the Places You'll Go for a graduation gift. Reh has all the wisdom for college or high school grads and delivers it perfectly. I bought three copies....2 as college grad gifts and I needed one for myself to keep me sane and grounded! Reh rules!
Great Book! Gives a great perspective on life........2003-05-14
This book is excellent! I gave copies as gifts to my sisters and they loved them. Offers a great perspective on life in a light, humorous and furry way.I would recommend this to everyone. Reh is adorable!
OMG! Too Cute!.......2003-05-13
What a great idea! Really smart and funny! Buy it if you have a dog and think they have their own personality. Also if you just want a really insightful book on life.
Use this book to de-stress.......2003-05-02
I saw this book in this month's Glamour and just about died when I looked through it at Borders. I bought it for my Mom for Mother's Day, and my friend who is going through a hard time right now. This is a really funny book (like all the SimplyShe books), but it's also really insightful. If you're a dog lover, you must get this- we all know how much dogs de-stress our lives, but if we all thought like them too- we'd all be happy, all the time! This book is really is adorable, and a really great gift.

Philip Brophy's bfi Screen Guide provides a soundmap to a hundred films that engage the ears. Covering titles as diverse as Car Wash and Apocalypse Now, Le Samourai and Stalker, Shaft and Citizen Kane each entry outlines the film's distinctive contribution to the hitherto underexplored world of sound in cinema.
The author guides the reader through an alternative cinema canon of the 'ear' of sonically exciting and remarkablefilms from all across the world and their amazing diversity of purpose and effect. This guide shows how most critics completly underestimate the significance of sound and how it is caught between the two irrreconcilable forces of the 'sound track'and sound design.
In his introduction and analysis (or more accurately 'hearing) of 100 films, the author compels the reader to 'listen not look' and to 'think with their ears'. 100 Film Scores and Sound Design is a provocative and absorbing guide to some of the most exciting uses of sound in popular and international cinema.

Book Description
Mozart's piano sonatas form a richly diverse and significant part of his instrumental output and span much of his mature composing career, thereby representing a microcosm of the composer's changing style. Part I examines the contexts in which the sonatas were composed and performed, and reviews likely sources of influence. Part II concentrates on the genesis of the sonatas and the sources, which reveals important information about Mozart's compositional process. In Part III the musical style is studied from the standpoint of rhetoric--a discipline featured in numerous contemporary aesthetic and theoretical textbooks on music.

Mozart's Piano Sonatas: Contexts, Sources, Style.......2000-08-27
This is a very scholarly work, in fact it reminded me of a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation revised for popular publication. It is the most thorough and detailed study of Mozart's piano sonatas I have yet found and even so I had hoped for a more complete analysis of how to play the sonatas well. As an adult piano student, I wanted advice as to how to interprent theme, motif and emotion in the various sonatas. This book presents a complete historical perspective on the sonatas but didn't provide the guidance on performance I was hoping for. As part of the library for a serious student, however, it is a must, albeit expensive.

Advice you don't mind hearing, not to mention taking.......2006-03-01
Imagine your smartest, funniest, closest friend...Now imagine you're sitting across from her in a coffee shop, listening and I mean really listening, to what she has to say about money. You don't feel threatened. You don't feel small. You don't feel stupid. Your friend is trying to help you and you let her. That is how reading this book makes you feel. Let Rowley's book help you figure out your financial style, and easily work towards a future you can afford and feel comfortable with. Trust me, the little tests are right on the money! (sorry for the bad pun!) If you've ever had even a bit of anxiety over your debt, spending habits, or frugal to a fault ways, you are not alone. Through exciting, real life stories, Rowley talks to women just like you (you WILL see yourself in her book) and helps us plan for a future where our money and happiness can be aligned properly.
While a worthwhile read from cover to cover, it is also a book you will return to again and again, picking up a paragraph here or a chapter there, helping you stay focused on your financial future
can't make up it's mind what kind of book to be.......2006-02-21
This book begins to suggest that the author is going to help you figure your money personality. After a highly superficial treatment of that topic, she moves on to semi-standard financial advice which is greatly incomplete.
While I agree with the other reviewer's comments about Suze, this book isn't worth the time or cost to read.
A reader.......2005-05-15
This book inspired me to create my own emergency fund and get myself together financially. Rowley explains how and what we need to do and gives good reasons why from financial, quality-of-life and psychological perspectives. Love the great real life stories of women and how money has played a key role in their lives. In addition, the book is loaded with financial information. Read it with a good highlighter, Post-Its and/or notepad. I gained a lot mentally and financially from this book. This book will remain a resource and tool on my shelf for a long time.
