Book Description
Since his late-1970s debut, Jean-Paul Gaultier has never ceased to astonish and outrage with his inventiveness and playful experimentation with the bizarre. Known for his feats of style inspired by the streets of Paris and London--the most infamous being Madonna's much publicized cone-shaped bustier--fashion's enfant terrible is a fixture in the world of haute couture, brazenly overturning traditional definitions of the beautiful and the ugly, the elegant and the vulgar.

A brief but interesting look at the world of Gaultier.......2001-05-06
As with the other books in the Universe of Fashion series, the Gaultier edition is mainly a photo look-book into the world of the designer. There is a short introduction about Gaultier, as well as a timeline of major events and collections in Gaultier's career. The photos used in the book are a good representation of Gaultier's clothing from his entire career, highlighting key pieces, and often showing them in interesting ways (a women's velvet cone bra dress is worn by male model Tanel in one photo for example). A great book for any Gaultier or fashion afficionado.

Book Description
It's not only fashion designers who leave their mark on a look: they'd be nothing without make-up artists and hairstylists. Odile Gilbert, one of the most creative hairstylists of all, finds herself in the greatest of demand these days. She works her fleeting, human materials into designs much as a sculptress would, borrowing from historical styles and ethnic languages of form, using feathers, earth and precious stones to fashion the most lavish of creations. This book sneaks a look behind the scenes of the fashion world and shows Odile Gilbert at work and alongside her finished creations. Her Style includes pictures of fashion shows, photographs for magazines and advertising campaigns. It is the result of many layers of fruitful collaboration: stylized with some of the world's best known fashion designers, photographed by the best fashion photographers and modeled on the most famous models of our time.

Customer Reviews:
Finally a great book about Gaultier!.......2001-05-06
Although it took 25 years after Gaultier first started designing under his own name for someone to dedicate a book to him, it was well worth the wait. McDowell, as with his book on Galliano, does a lavish job on Gaultier's life and designs. The book is packed with runway photos and details about some of the collections. My only complaints about the book (and they are very minor complaints): McDowell goes into over-detail about Gaultier's life, especially up to 1976 when he first started designing his own label, making for slow reading for half of the book; a few of the photos are mislabelled with the wrong collection (mostly the couture photos); and although there are some great runway photos in the book, a lot of Gaultier's show-stopping designs in the past are not represented, and there aren't enough photos from men's collections. A great book though!
Gaultier fans--this is the book you've been waiting for!.......2001-02-21
Colin McDowell's peek into the wild world of Jean Paul Gaultier is both long overdue and well worth the wait! From his earliest childhood memories to his 2000 couture show and all points inbetween, McDowell reveals all in the same manner Gaultier designs his collections--with wit, irreverence, and style! This lavishly illustrated book has pictures and sketches (sadly, not Gaultier's own) from his most famous collections, including some rare and unusual ones. Photo coverage starts in heavily from around the 1989 collections, but earlier eighties collections are glimpsed here and there throughout the book. McDowell punctuates with notable quotes and images of Gaultier's influences, from pin-up queens to Physique Pictorial, from the great couturiers to street fashion. Smartly written and solidly designed (it even has Gaultier's nautical stripes in the end caps!) this book is a MUST for all Gaultier fans and admirers. It explains, in vivid detail, how he became the fashion icon that he is today!

The Prequel Trilogy is now complete, and Star Wars fans can now own the entire set of graphic novel adaptations in one deluxe package! From Anakin Skywalker's days as a pod racer on Tatooine, to his tragic transformation into the Dark Lord of the Sith, the entire story is here in one slipcased set.

All in one.......2007-01-05
Just as I thought that I would have to purchase these three comics separately, comes a Slipcased Set. Excellent. And if they could do this with Episodes IV - VI, that would be great. I recommend this to everyone who loves Star Wars comics. It's a good adaptation of first trilogy. Great work.
Great expectations, great cost - little disappointments.......2006-04-06
I've been waiting for this edition for a long time, because I'd known only Polish ones - of Episodes I and II by Egmont Poland - completely disastrous. Episode III wasn't here at all That's why I decided to complete my collection with original issue and... First disappointment - I found in my box copy of AOTC... withdrawn from a bookstore! Can you imagine? `Collectors' Box Set' containing copy you can account straight to `used'? Cover was worn off and folded with signs of previous labeling! The second disappointment was about quality of adaptation of Episode III, I've read the first time. In AOTC I'd seen before so may shortages that made this book unclear for readers knowing no film, but the "dark climax" of ROTS is only darkening its sense and brings almost no tensions. Drawings, especially characters have no expressions, faces are empty and only their words say something. The only advantage of the pack I've noticed is its discount price - too little to recommend anyone to pay even these 30 bucks, especially with all the mailing costs I had to add.

Helpful instructor resource.......2001-09-16
This collection of descriptions of available videos pertinent to the field of psychology is a helpful resource for those who teach at the college or high school level. More qualitative, movie review-style comments would be helpful. The list is also far from comprehensive. Hopefully future editions will improve on this good first start. It is an invaluable addition to compliment the video collection of the typical university library.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
Customer Reviews:
Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Steam-powered life........2007-05-17
This book is a good expansion to the Dragon Mech game. Full of interesting new steam powers, prestiege classes, and a new core class, the Steamborg Mark II. If you're looking to incorporate more steam tech into your Dragon Mech game, or looking to make your Steamborg unique, this book is a good buy. The feats are pretty interesting, and offer some fun options. Also there is a new race, the Tik-Toks. While interesting I felt that the Tik-Toks, like a lot of the material in the Dragon Mech setting were not fleshed out enough. All in all, a good buy. If you're interested in a campaign with more in-depth look at steam tech, and a more fleshed out setting in general check out the Iron Kingdoms books by Privateer Press.
Product Description
In pre-1990s Las Vegas, casino marketing executives were all cut from the same cloth; sharply-dressed and smooth-talking with street-savvy. They rose through the ranks of operations--dealer, floorman, pit boss, shift boss and casino manager. When it was time to leave the trenches, they went "upstairs" into the executive offices, where they hosted a handful of established players according to the unwritten rules of old-school Vegas. Then Steve Cyr showed up.
Customer Reviews:
A Whale of a Book.......2007-09-11
Take a spectacular author writing about a spectacular person and you end up with a spectacular book!! This is an incredible read...it is by far the best book on high rollers and their hosts ever written. It is an "insider" view of Vegas that is both fascinating and revealing: a high octane blast of Superhost Steve Cyr and his multi-million dollar casino "whales" (high limit players) that will keep you turning pages faster than a blackjack pro can deal cards. If you want a glimpse of how a top casino host operates, the kinds of comps and treatment afforded high rollers, and the lifestyle and gambling habits of the truly wealthy...this book is for you. It's the next best thing to a seven figure credit line! Enjoy.
Captivating.......2007-08-31
Whale Hunt In The Desert is first and foremost a great story. Learning how the highest of the high rollers are lured into one casino versus another with outrageous comps, and how much they bet and (usually) lose once they start gambling, is fascinating in its own right. But, more than that, it's the story of the barely moral actions and ploys of top casino host Steve Cyr.
The author is a skilled, insightful storyteller, whose wit and sense of humor come through. A nice change of pace are the occasional, well placed asides on topics such as compulsive gambling and greed.
Though the book is primarily a chronological account, you can flip to virtually any page and start reading and things will make sense. This is a great book to read either cover to cover, or to bring to the pool or on a flight and read a small section at a time.
As close as I'll ever get to being a high-roller.......2006-09-03
Although the last few chapters are clunky, the rest of the book is so good that I really didn't care! What a fabulous glimpse into the good, the bad, and the truly ugly sides of the cream-of-the-crop gamblers and their relationship with the casinos who host them.
I just was fascinated to peek behind the curtain (or in this case, above the ordinary hotel rooms and inside the high-roller gaming areas).
The next time I'm in Vegas, I'll be doing a lot more than looking for a "fun" slot machine or table game to try out ... I"ll be whale watching!
Boreing.......2006-01-23
This is a book about an egotistical, self promoter. If you want to read about how great Cyr believes he is buy this book. You would think this guy was working on the cure for cancer rather than getting people that already want to come to the casino to actually come to the casino.
