Book Description
Arguing that cultural reform is a key aspect of political reform, Richard Kraus shows here that China's economic transformation has dramatically liberated the production and consumption of culture. In this original and provocative study, Kraus offers a political analysis of Chinese culture that includes all genres of art. Surveying the evolution of China's cultural politics between 1979 and 2003, this book explores the complex relationship between money and art as exemplified by declining state arts patronage, changing standards for painting nudity, censorship, and the professionalization of artistic work. Cogent, witty, and deeply informed, this comprehensive overview of the Chinese arts scene will be an essential text for all observers of contemporary China. Visit our website for sample chapters!

The best of Nursing Humor.......2002-12-08
As a student nurse I found this book hysterical!!! The student nursing short stories were so easy to relate to. Finally I realize I am not alone, there are more psycho instructors out there marking papers as if they were Zorro using a red pen, and it is not just our facility that "treats report as if it were classified information, and we don't have proper clearance." A must get for the nurse in your life, or for yourself for humor you can relate to.

And you thought "dental humor" is an oxymoron!.......2003-02-13
If you are looking for hilarious dental jokes, short stories, poems, cartoons, and experiences in the dental chair, then this book is perfect for you. I tried searching specifically for dental jokes online but none existed. Fortunately, Dr. Sonis complied this anthology of the best of dental humor from professional and mainstream publications like the Journal of American Dental Association and Gary Larson's "The Far Side". I strongly recommend this book for all audiences including dental students, dentists, and of course, us patients. This book makes an excellent coffee table book, or in this case, dentist waiting room table book for a leisurely read and laughter. Overall, the hours of content in this book provides an excellent source of laughing gas at a great value.

The Patriot
ASIN: 1842220764 |
Book Description
South Carolina, 1776 at the start of the American Revolution, one man struggled with the upheaval of political independence and his own secret past. The making of this dramatic film about war and family is all captured in The Patriot, The Official Companion. Starring Mel Gibson, Tom Wilkinson (Shakespeare in Love), Chris Cooper (October Sky), and Jason Isaacs (Armageddon), and directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day), The Patriot is the story of America on the threshold of war. Complete with stills from the set, special in-depth interviews with the cast, director and producers, and information on how the Smithsonian Institute helped oversee the production for historical accuracy, this book is a visually stunning keepsake of the movie.
Customer Reviews:
A GREAT COMPANION BOOK!!!.......2003-04-06
This is a great book for history teachers and history and film buffs! You not only get an in-depth look at the making of one of the greatest films ever created, but you also get a look at the historical aspects (People, places and events) that parallel the film's fictionalized portrayal of history. Grade: A+
How was "The Patriot" made? Find out!.......2000-07-31
The stunning historical imagery of "The Patriot" was the result of a lot of long hours and hard work by a lot of people, seeking out properly historical sites, consulting with the Smithsonian Institute (the first time they have ever participated in the making of a movie), and ensuring that all of the details of "The Patriot" were properly carried out. This attention to detail is a hallmark of well-made, well-thought-out movies, and was probably last seen to this degree of precision in "Titanic". Learn how "The Patriot" was made in this superb book filled with on-screen and behind-the-scenes photos. The one amusing irony I find is the amount of computer work that went into the massive battle scenes. Is it just me, or is there something slightly -- unusual about computer-generated REVOLUTIONARY WAR combatants? But if it adds to the overall impact of the movie, which it certainly does, what of it? You'll discover that and much more in this must-have book for anyone who enjoyed and was impressed by "The Patriot", which I regard as one of the most significant movies I have ever seen!
Learn how a movie is made--I did from this book!.......2000-07-21
If you enjoyed the movie, you'll really enjoy this book. Lots of big, colorful photographs of the cast and crew at work during the filming; many pictures are suitable for framing--the photos are that good. If you are a student of film, this is a great book in which to learn how a movie is put together from start to finish: the text is very, very enlightening. The book even illustrates and explains how all of the film's special effects were accomplished.
Enjoyed the story behind the pictures........2000-07-15
Great book! I saw the movie and the book brought it all together. One correction should be made though. I live near Rock Hill, SC and we are not a primarily farming community. I have lived here for over 25 years and I don't even know a farmer. Yes, people were excited about the movie being made here, but I don't know anyone who spent their days chasing down Mel Gibson. Anyway, I thought the book was great and so was the movie.
Beautiful work!.......2000-06-14
After looking at and reading through my copy of The Patriot: The Official Companion about 10 times, I recommend this beautiful work of art to everyone! The photos in this book are breathtaking and realistic and they cover every aspect of the movie. Some of the best shots of the film are included in this work. The articles on the actors are thorough and not only give some history and filmography on them, but also offer a very personal view into their lives. Being on the set during filming myself I can see that The Official Companion offers a view into the business of film-making, and that coupled with the historical aspect of The Patriot will truly make this book a pleasure for everyone! Suzanne and Rachel both did a *wonderful* job!
Customer Reviews:
Good Read.......2007-03-10
I got this book a few years ago at a library sale in Hawaii. I think I paid a quarter for it. It has some really interesting little stories from many artists and people in the business like Frankie Valli, Sting, Shadow Morton, Mickie Most, and others.
The book was published in the 80's, so it's interesting to read these stories from people who have either passed on or become even more popular than ever. I liken it to a hors d'oeuvre tray of who's who in the music business.
Brief anecdotes, little depth.......2005-07-11
This 430-page tome is a collection of brief anecdotes culled from interviews with over 200 music personalities, from Artie Shaw to David Lee Roth --- featuring huge luminaries such as Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Ben E. King, Buddy Rich, Ella Fitzgerald, Tom Jones... an impressive assemblage. However, I take issue with the authorial credit: in no sense is this a book "by" Joe Smith; his writing here consists of about eight pages in total. These are stories told to Joe Smith, which is how the credit ought to run. Why is he listed as the author? Basically, this is a vanity project: Smith was the CEO of Warner's, and who's the publisher of this book? Warner Books! What a coincidence! Sure, he made the interviews and edited them down into anecdotes, but... well, then, what did the editor, Mitchell Fink, do? Anyway, Smith's ego aside, this is an interesting enough collection to flip through. Its broad scope is, as noted, impressive, but this also works against the book, in that each interviewee's remarks are brief, three pages at the most. So unfortunately you get very little substance from each subject. As a whole, it's an adequate, skim-the-surface overview of pop music from the jazz era to the late '80s, and it gives a nice idea of how the business has changed over the decades, but --- and I say this in disappointment, not mockingly --- unfortunately the brief interviews fly by rapidly, and are ultimately forgettable.
Best oral history of popular music .......2005-03-31
I have read this book at least three times and find it endlessly entertaining. It features artists and other music industry insiders from the 40's to the 80's telling their own stories in their own words. Each person is featured in a self-contained "chapter" that lasts just a couple of pages; the format lends itself to reading whenever you have a few minutes to spare. I recommend this book highly if you are interested in the subject.
Amazing.......2004-02-05
I have owned two copies of this book - the first I lent out and did not get back. I loved it so much that I bought a second copy.
This fabulous book begins with Artie Shaw and ends with David Lee Roth and contains some of the most interesting anectodes and musical insight I have ever read. Some of the first-person narratives were hilarious - others were heart wrenching. If you love music, and the history of music, you simply must read this.

A Fascinating Start.......2006-05-08
"HOW TO OPEN A FINANCIALLY SUCCESSFUL COFFEE, ESPRESSO & TEA SHOP" by Elizabeth Godsmark, Lora Arduser and Douglas R. Brown.
Coffee is a huge industry across the country and around the world. In the introduction of "How to open a financially successful coffee, espresso & tea shop" the authors point out that the coffee industry is a $5 billion industry, which is growing more and more every year.
Anyone who is interested in starting his or her own coffee, espresso, or tea shop is going to be fascinated in this book. The authors start at the beginning with developing a business plan. The give examples and even offer a CD program that has preformatted documents. Licenses, business name, choosing suppliers, and equipment requirements are all discussed in the opening chapters.
Many aspects of running a successful coffee, espresso & tea business are discussed throughout this book. The authors have done a tremendous job in giving an introduction to opening this type of business. They talk about profit planning and advertising, as well as choosing the best equipment and managing your operating costs.
Without a doubt this is a definite must have book for anyone even thinking about starting this kind of business. The author's are able to skillfully introduce all the major concerns with opening a coffee, espresso & tea business. They provide a wealth of information that will help clarify a person's views of what is actually required to open, operate, and run a financially successful coffee, espresso & teashop.
Good content, but very choppy.......2006-04-27
How to Open a Financially Successful Coffee, Espresso & Tea Shop" by Elizabeth Godsmark, Lora Aduser, and Douglas R. Brown is great for beginners looking into possibly opening a coffee shop. The book touches on a lot of information that is generic to any business, but it is a good starting point. It provides basic information on writing a business plan, scouting out a location, buying equipment, hiring a staff and more.
I wish the authors would have delved further into the various aspects of writing a business plan. As it is, it simply lists what types of topics should be covered in a business plan and basic information on what the terms mean. There is nothing comprehensive about how to create pro-forma income projections or any of the more intricate parts of the business plan.
While parts of the book seemed to just be stating common sense knowledge, the authors did provide a number of helpful websites and resources. They talk in-depth on ordering coffee, but I wish the book would have included more coffee/espresso specific information - such as numerous drink recipes, maybe tips from those that have started their own coffee shop. Things like that would have been useful.
The book's flow is also a little disappointing. Many times the writing seemed redundant because the topic had already been touched on. For some reason the authors will discuss a subject, such as using a website to enhance your business and then touch on the subject again a few chapters later without adding anything significant to the mix..
All in all, I think the book does provide a good deal of useful information to anyone looking to open a business in the food industry. I just wish it had more meat to it or that the authors would have gone more in-depth on a few key issues.
Really helpful.......2006-04-19
Organized in a simple to comprehend and use manner, this book is likely to be beneficial to anyone who is thinking about opening a coffee or tea shop. It starts by helping to clarify the all important business plan. Chapters follow a logical sequence which helps someone who is new to the business to fully understand everything that is involved.
This book helps the reader prioritize all of the different steps that are needed in order to begin a thriving business. It covers the basics of buying the product, equipments, and how to figure out pricing of the items. CD-ROM is choked full of many different forms which are needed in order to run the business smoothly.
The book also completely covers the basics which are needed in any business, including employees, customers, marketing strategies, bookkeeping, and laws and regulations. Easy to read and simple to follow, this book will help anyone who wants to start a coffee or teas shop.
