      Book Description

Textiles and fashion share a close and complicated relationship. They have, however, traditionally been considered separately. This is surprising given that fashion is dependent, and to some extent shaped by the type of raw materials (textiles) that are available. This essential book provides the first comprehensive overview of this symbiotic relationship. In Fashion and Textiles: An Overview Gale and Kaur analyze fashion and textile's cultural, industrial and social relationships, as well as how the two fields compete with and influence one another. Highlighting cultural differences and similarities between the two industry sectors, this book includes varying professional perspectives, information about key roles and jobs, and practical considerations relating to economics, design, manufacture and retail. A key text for a wide range of courses on fashion and textiles, it is vital reading for anyone hoping to pursue a career in either field.

This story was included in Pocket Book 5 of Strangers in Paradise and - except for a few cameo appearences- has little to do with any of the main characters in the book. It concerns a young woman named Molly Fleming, a struggling writer who one day snaps and murders her husband, Michael, in his sleep. Diving into her psyche through a series of letters with an unknown man named Poo, we are able witness the same events taking place in early 19th century London, but with Molly as the hero of her own sick fantasy.

I have to compliment Mr. Moore for his diversity and creating a piece of work that allows us to get into the mind of the killer. It's certainly what I consider to be a breath of fresh air in comics today. The reason I dock this book a star is because of the price. If you are primarily an SiP fan, I recommend spending a little bit more for the Pocket Book which includes this story as a bonus. Otherwise you'll be spending a bit more for this stand alone issue.

As one of the Make Up artists for this book it was a pleasure to have worked with Michael and his crew. Michael took an idea and created a visual for all to see. The people are real, the ads are real and the "Looks", well they are just as real! I hope that everyone who buys it or looks at it has as much fun as I did in being a part of his creation.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasy Portraits Based on Headlines in Personal Ads.......2001-02-27

The concept behind this book is unique in my experience. Mr. Smith read many personals ads offered by people looking for companionship. He then contacted those who had placed the ads, and offered to do a fantasy portrait of them based on the description in the ad. This book contains the actual photographs of the people behind the ads along with the ads themselves. The perspective is a humorous one, touched by more than a little pathos.

Before going further, let me caution you that the images in this book include people of almost every major sexual persuasion and practice. I have written my review so it will be acceptable to general audiences. This book should not be shared with children, in my opinion. The images exceed an "R" rating if this were a motion picture.

The author explains his purpose (and his ambivalence) rather well in the introduction. "Although I've always been drawn to personal ads . . ., I had never . . . answered one until I began to research this book." "Maybe the project was really just an excuse . . . ."

The results will surprise you, as they did the author (and me). "I had no idea what I was in for." "I was touched, shocked, titillated, saddened, amused, horrified -- but always fascinated -- by the people who placed the ads."

Let me give you a few examples (selected from among the less controversial photographs). The quote is the ad's headline in each case:

"Start a Fire in My Heart" In this one, a young woman describes her desire to meet a handsome fireman. The portrait has her wrapped in a fire hose that is attached to a hydrant while smoking a cigarette.

"Tennis Playing Cross Dresser" Here, a man dressed like a woman in tennis whites leaps over the net in a way so that you can see that this is a man dressed like a woman.

"Do You Have a Hairpiece?" A nude young man is standing in front of a barber shop window holding a small wig strategically over a central part of his anatomy. The title refers obliquely to a contagious skin affliction mentioned by name in the body of the ad.

"I-Dream-of-Jeannie-Looks" In this one a blond woman in a harem outfit lies next to an open lamp with smoke coming out. She does indeed remind one of Barbara Eden in the television series.

"Urban Mermaid" This one has an Ariel look-alike lying in a crummy bathtub on a seedy urban street.

"Tickle Party Guy" Here, a nude young man strategically covered has disembodied hands all over him.

"Bowl You Over" A nude man wearing socks and bowling shoes is standing on the lane with a bowling pin strategically placed.

Here are some other titles where I will leave the photographic image to your imagination:

                        "Vampire Huntress"

                        "Don't Stop When I Tell U"

                        "Rock Tigress"

                        "Killer Mouth"

                        "Cinderella"

                        "Spanker Sought"

                        "L.A. Girl Seeks D.C. Guy"

                        "78-Year-Old Virgin"

The bulk of the people in the book are either quite attractive or at least reasonably attractive. One wonders about what lack of social skills led them to try personal ads. Presumably, the headlines suggest a strange view (in many cases) of what people are looking for in a social relationship. I was particularly surprised to see the number of women who used celebrities for whom they bear a resemblance in their ads.

After having seen this book, it occurred to me that this book could make a great party theme for Halloween. Have each person write a personal ad, and dress and act like the headline in the ad. Someone could take photographs as souvenirs for each guest. I am assuming that you could handle the invitations so that people did not aim their humor too low for the other guests to enjoy.

After this, you can also read personal ads and imagine the photographs that Mr. Smith would make. I also hope he does a sequel.

Seriously, this book points out that written expressions can give very mixed messages. Think about the visual images you are creating when you write. You may be heading people in a direction that you don't want them to go in.

Visualize your language carefully for clearer expression!

                        5 out of 5 stars Personals.......2001-02-13

This is a fascinating case study of real people (I think), and their ads. Michael Smith did a fabulous job of matching these characters with equally fitting clever settings. It is reassuring to see that there are persons from all aspects and walks of life just searching for the most basic of needs, connecting with another.(Grant Dillon, you devil) I would recommend this book as a interesting insight into the world of people and their personal ads. I will eagerly await the movie version!

5 out of 5 stars The Personals Story.......2001-01-26

As part of this wonderful book of pictures and the personal ads that inspired them, I can tell you firsthand that the people photographed within really are real. I was working as the director of a personals department in L.A. when my advertisers began mentioning to me that they were receiving responses from a man who wanted to photograph them for a book, and my curiousity was piqued. I'd been given his number by one of the lady advertisers who was worried about being taken for a ride, so I gave him a ring and we arranged to meet.

Mike was one of the nicest, most interesting and interested men I'd ever met. His project divided his time between L.A. and N.Y., and he had some great stories about the wonderful people he'd already photographed. I soon realized that we shared a belief that the people who place personal ads are as normal - and as strange! - as any other subset of humanity, and just as worthy of both respect and ridicule. I'm thrilled to see that his book conveys that affectionate belief.

In an age of cyber-communication, cyber-relationships, and cybersex, it's nice to remember that sometimes people are just people needin' people... with all the ridiculousness and tenderness that entails.

                          Book Description

The introduction of the DVD marked the beginning of one of history's most successful technological innovations, and capped a 75-year development of home-viewing possibilities. Never before have film fans had access in their living rooms to something so remarkably close to the theatrical experience. In addition, because a DVD can hold much more than a single movie, it has allowed films to be marketed with a variety of extras, sparking both a new packaging industry and greater interest on the part of home viewers. This book provides an examination of the DVD's impact, both on home viewing and on film study. From film fan culture through filmmaker commentaries, from "special editions" to a look at where the format will go from here, author Aaron Barlow offers the first-ever exploration of this explosive new entertainment phenomenon. As the DVD becomes the popular vehicle of record for films, it is also becoming a unique and unprecedented way for the interested viewer to learn more about filmmaking than has ever been possible before. Because of its ability to reproduce the dimensions and quality of the celluloid image, film fans and scholars can have practically perfect reproductions of classic and contemporary films at their disposal. Not only will this book be of interest to the burgeoning population of DVD fans and collectors, but it will provide insights that should be of interest to both students of popular culture and of film.

5 out of 5 stars a must for every movie buff.......2005-02-19

A very cool book about how technology is changing the way we see movies, make movies, and think about movies. DVDs give us the capability to see a lot of movies---all kinds of movies----again and again. They provide a way to challenge the one-size-fits-all attitude of corporate America (in this case, corporate America is Hollywood.)

You could almost say the advent of the DVD is a little bit like the advent of the Internet---it gives a lot of people the ability to access information, thus increasing their appetite for it. And if you can skip from a Bollywood DVD to Persona to The Wizard of Oz to the Creature from Planet X all in the same night---sort of like surfing the net---it's got to do something to your approach to movies. I've done that, but until I read Barlow's book, I never thought about its effect.

Barlow has a very easy, readable style, and has a real knack for writing about things that could be dry---like questions of copyright, or the Special Edition DVD---with liveliness and insight. And I loved the discussions on the history of film collecting and the impact of the video on the work of Quentin Tarantino (and in turn, his impact on the world of film).

For film students such as myself, I would say that the DVD Revolution is almost a necessity---we need to know more about the world that we are going to make films in! But I think anyone who has a passion for movies would enjoy this book.

Misha Tal finally died in 1992 at 56. Heavy smoking and drinking habits combined with bad health and a missing kidney just finished him off.
He was a most extraordinary chess player as can be read from his autobiography; as a matter of fact that book only covered the story up to 1975. Gallagher book is very welcomed by every fan of Tal since it tells the latter part of the story; this is not as witty as Tal's writings but it is able to tell the real truth because the KGB is gone...The book is interesting and does a good job telling us about the latter part of Tal's sad life; let's say that the book contains some astounding games too since Tal, at times could yet kindle great fires on the board: Hubner-Tal (Bienne 1976), Tal-Portisch (Bienne 1976), Spassky-Tal (Montreal 1979), Tal-Larsen (Montreal 1979), Tal-Korchnoi (montpellier 1984), etc...See also the games Tal-Ftacnick and Tal-Flesch.
This book must be seen as a labour of love for that great player from a non too distant past which was destroyed by the soviet system.

4 out of 5 stars Great effort, but not the same..........2001-09-26

Joe Gallagher does a great job on this book which is a follow-up of Tal's "Life and Games of Mikhail Tal." Gallagher is known for his great works on the openings, and that is reflected here as he uses Tal's games as a vehicle for opening study. The format is great, also following "L and G", with tournament/match results, ratings, and stories strewn about. The game notes are very good.

The downsides of this book are that 1) it is extremely hard to live up to Tal's beautiful writing and notes. Afterall, "Life and Games" is considered to be one of the best chess books ever written. Gallagher just doesn't have the same fire and passion in his writing and notes. Maybe he should have chosen a format that is different from "L and G" if he wanted to avoid such an obvious comparison. He tells some nice stories about Tal, but rather flatly. 2) the games are not of the same quality and beauty as Tal's earlier ones. The opponents are not as strong, and Tal's style dulled a bit, becoming more solid at the expense of sparkling sacs and combinations. However, the games are thoroughly enjoyable if you don't think about is earlier games too much. 3) The introduction chapter is too long, since it covers what Tal already has (before 1975). I found it a bit redundant, although it nice to have another perspective on this best part of Tal's career.

Overall, this is a must have for any Tal fan, as it is well done and gives a complete story in conjunction with "L and G." Just don't be too disappointed that it is not the same quality as Tal's classic work.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book.......2001-02-22

Joe Gallagher goes all out in this book! Covering Tal's career from 1975 to his untimely death in 1992, Gallagher picks up where Tal left off in his autobiography. The games themselves are, of course, Tal masterpieces and are well annotated using some of Tal's own recommendations. Galllagher provides ample biographical detail to go with the games and his notes on the games themselves are very readable with not too many variations. All in all, a modern classic on "The Magician from Riga."

2 out of 5 stars Average Text Heavy Book.......2007-02-12

Really expected this book to include a lot more process flows and diagrams to make it easy for readers to understand. However, it is chapter after chapter of text. I believe the authors had relied on some service providers to obtain the true understanding of the industry.

However, having worked in the fund industry for 15 years, I can say that it is an average book. It can give you general understanding of the industry.

I needed a good resource to learn about the securities and MF industry. This book is by far better written and more accessible than most other books - much better than Pozen's book on MFs and other popular books like "after the trade is made". Actually was enjoyable to read with great explanations and interesting sidebars. Very comprehensive with good diagrams.

Start a Successful Mutual Fund by Melinda Gerber lists this book as a recommended read. It definitely complements her book. While hers includes the costs and steps to start a mutual fund (and how to choose service providers), this one shows how a mutual fund's service providers work together. This book is for anyone interested in learning about what goes on to support a mutual fund.
