Book Description
Self-serving lackey, self-deceiving puppet, Swiss Protestant partisan, or sensible Erasmian humanist: which, if any, was Thomas Cranmer? For centuries historians have offered often bitterly contradictory answers. Although Cranmer was a key participant in the changes to English life brought about by the Reformation, his reticent nature and lack of extensive personal writings have left a vacuum that in the past has too often been filled by scholarly prejudice or presumption. For the first time, however, this book examines in-depth little used manuscript sources to reconstruct Cranmer's theological development on the crucial Protestant doctrine of justification. The author explores Cranmer's cultural heritage, why he would have been attracted to Luther's thought, and then provides convincing evidence for the Reformed Protestant Augustinianism which Cranmer enshrined in the formularies of the Church of England. For Cranmer the glory of God was his love for the unworthy; the heart of theology was proclaiming this truth through word and sacrament. Hence, the focus of both was on the life of on-going repentance, remembering God's gracious love inspired grateful human love.

The Heart Of The Gospel Unfolded In The Liturgy of 1552.......2003-06-06
If the cost weren't so high, this could be called a "Tract
for the Times"! Because of the price, I have given it only
4 stars, despite the 5 star content.
Here is what attracted me in this study. In this day of
much liturgical revision, nobody seems to ask *what message
our liturgy conveys?*
Indeed, modern revisions seem to produce liturgies hardly
worthy of the name. Dumbed Down or theologically neutered,
today's modern revisions often leave something to be desired.
Worse, those who claim to "have to liturgy" and "follow
the bible alone" often end up going to a meeting called a
"worship service" in name, only to experience a
Contemporary Christian Music concert without the Mosh Pit.
Then, at best, the Word of God, the Thanksgiving of the
People through the Lord's Supper, and the Gospel of
Christ become incidental to the "performance".
Such muddy thinking and spirituality was not always the case.
Cranmer's Doctrine of Repentance is unfolded in Cranmer's Liturgy of 1552.
Yet Cranmer's doctrine and liturgy were not really *his* at
all. Instead he simply sought to be faithful to the
Holy Scriptures and what he considered to be the
faithful teaching of the Holy Catholic Church before the
corruptions that had so plagued his day.
Specifically, Cranmer's Liturgy attacked the heretical view
of Christ's atonement which stated that our Lord's passion
was sufficient to wash away the stain of original sin, but
little more. Our works, the indulgence peddlers stated to
their profit, are required expiate post baptismal sins.
To this Cranmer, having studied the scriptures
and the fathers of the Church answered a resounding
"NO"! His liturgy is the unfolding of the biblical
doctrine repentance towards God and faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Read it and you'll agree that we need to re-establish
godly worship along these lines whether one uses
Cranmer's ancient liturgy or a modern - but faithful
- rendition of it. The point is not to return,
necessarily, to the Thee's, Thou's, and Vouchsafe's
of Cranmer's day. Rather, the point is for us to
RETURN TO CRANMER'S GOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST
in regular worship that humbles us and exalts
the salvation that Jesus Christ gives to the world!
Read this book, and I believe you'll agree with Cranmer.
May God move someone at Oxford Press to put
this out in a reasonably priced paperback!

Awesome Fictional Kemono!!!!!.......2006-04-11
"Kemono" (literally meaning "beast") is a genre of ancient Japanese art (more so paintings) that featured animal or animal-esque characters in human-like settings. If you're a fan of manga and anime (as am I), then you know that anthropomorphism runs heavily through manga and anime (e.g. Studio Ghibli's Porco Rosso, My Neighbor Totoro, The Cat Returns, etc.). Created by Stan Sakai, Usagi Yojimbo (literally "rabbit bodyguard") continue the tradition of anthropomorphic kemono in the form of a manga.
This TPB (trade paperback), 'Book 9: Daisho', (daisho referring to a twin pair of Japanese blades) collects a portion of the independent Mirage Studio's 16-issue run, beginning with issue #7, of the series which ran from 1993 to 1996. Actually, Mirage's 16-issue run is Volume 2 of the Usagi Yojimbo series, as another independent Fantagraphics published the ealier first volume (1987-1993). (Currently, Dark Horse has taken over publishing the series and is 92 issues strong to date.)
In it's run at Fantagraphics, I'm unsure as to whether or not the series was in color or in B&W (black and white); the current Dark Horse published series is indeed in B&W. However, Mirage Studio's run of the series printed the comics in color, which is a stark contrast to the fact that most independent publishers print their comics in the B&W format.
Personally, I favor color over B&W. For you die-hard comic purists out there who scoff at me for favoring color as opposed to B&W, so be it: There are some good B&W comics, but to be honest, sometimes it's just too hard to visually decipher what's going on with all the line work and penciling going on.
My first brush with Usagi was during the late 80s when the first cartoon series of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT henceforth) appeared on the early Saturday morning cartoons block (I still have Usagi's and the turtles action figures!). Recently, I learned that this appearance of Usagi in the Ninja Turtles cartoon series may have been a result of the turtles' appearances in various Usagi comics from the first run when published through Fantagraphics.
The story arc presented in this TPB collection is what really thrusted my interest full-throttle into Stan Sakai's awesome character. The stories spanning issues 10-12 focus on the notion that an evil general has stolen Usagi's daisho, "the soul of the warrior", and he's on a mission to get them back.
The action is nonstop, runs at a steady pace, and thrusts your imagination deep into the early 17th century of Edo Japan. On top of that, Usagi is a no nonsense ronin ("masterless samurai") who exudes bravery, honesty, and courage in his upright demeanor. The aforementioned qualities may have been gleaned from the Bushido code of ethics for historical samurai. On top of that, this is historical fiction at its finest: the wardrobes, sceneries, buildings, etc., are drawn to the faithfulness of Edo period Japan, so much to the point that the series was once awarded a Parent's Choice Award due to the comic's educational value.
Although you don't have to be a learned "grasshopper" in the ways of the Japanese warrior to enjoy the series, I think it is helpful to understand some of the history behind what happens in the stories as well as brushing up on some Japanese terms, like daisho, katana, san, etc. Other than that...pick up a copy of this forgotten gem of a TPB! And you get TONS of Usagi Yojimbo stories in this phat collection!
As per usual, Sakai breathes life into his graven rabbit.......2000-01-21
Stan Sakai's story-telling ability once again surfaces to shine bright above the churning mess of mediocrity and narrative detritus the comics industry so often produces - this should come as no surprise to those who have kept up with the lapine ronin's "warrior's pilgrimage." Sakai's talent becomes wildly apparent when, after chronicling the salvation of a farming village from their slaver captors which resulting in the theft of Miyamoto Usagi's daisho (two-swords), he embarks upon a seven-page digression into the cultural import of the samurai's blades and then leaps marvelously back into manic high-action. My only regret is that there are only so many of his books available (fourteen by March 2000)!
What can you say? Stan Sakai have done it again.......1999-01-13
Daisho is a collection of the first Usagi Yojimbo-issues published by Mirage, and to be honest i like them better in b&w as they are here than in colour that they are in the ordinary issues. It's not much to say about the stories, except that they are just as great as always. I should though recomnmend that you read the earlier issues (both the ones published on Mirage and the earlier publisher, Fantagraphics), but that's not necessary to just understand the stories. Daisho is a great collection that should be in every Usagi-collectors shelf.

DAISHO.......2007-01-24
I didn't think i would be able to get into this book- as I really never had an interest in Japanese history, or culture, but I could not put it down. The characters were so completely developed and sympathetic, that I even cared about the "bad guys". Daisho is a pure, romantic, beautifully told, good old-fashioned love story that appeals to any gender reader.

Book Description
Life is "Duck Soup"-fun, easy, a piece of cake-when you can laugh at yourself and everything else. Swami Beyondananda, author of Driving Your Own Karma does away with all earnestness and doctrine of whatever stripe as he elaborates on his punny theories. The self-proclaimed leader of a FUNdamentalist Revival (accent on FUN), the Swami advocates putting levity over gravity, and offers seven ways to prevent Truth Decay. According to the Swami, the reason we are put in the material world is to get more material, and Nonjudgment Day is at hand. Although for most of us life is hardly easy, and can easily be hard, Swami says life can easily be easy and hardly be hard at all. "Am I serious?" asks the Swami. "Absolutely not!"
Customer Reviews:
"Duck Soup" beats a Stew anytine!.......2006-11-18
I read this book a while back, but today I was reminded of its significance. When the drive-thru at my favorite fast-food restaurant was swamped with cars, when a large SUV drove the wrong way through the narrow driveway and when I ended up behind a boat festooned with a grass skirt, I remembered Steve's counsel that our purpose for being in this life is to gather comedy "material." My friend and I drove away laughing so hard we made strange snorting noises, could hardly catch our breath, and had to peek through our eyelashes to even see where we were going. If you do not think life is all that funny, then I recommend this book. Perhaps your "jestive system" is clogged and in need of treatment. You can find the needed remedy in "Duck Soup for the Soul."
Quack up with the Swami!.......2000-05-09
With just the right humorous spice and some very ducky spiritual stock, Swami Beyondananda (aka Steve Bhaerman) mixes up a batch of healing stories that build strong funny bones and remind us to increase the laugh-force on the planet. Each chapter is as funny as it is wise, as you can intuit from the Swami's advice that we can alter our own reality (and the reality of those around us) by Making Fools of ourselves, remembering to Tell-A-Vision, being Esteem-Generators, and Committing Random Acts of Comedy and Beautiful Nonsense. Have fun learning how to drive your own Karma... while making sure you don't run over anyone else's Dogma!
Book Description
In contemporary America, more people are becoming acquainted with Shakespeare through the movies than the actual texts. The proliferation of screen adaptions, however, has led to the appearance of the Bard in all manner of productions...many he would surely not recognize as his own.
Shakespeare, The Movie brings together an impressive line-up of contributors to consider how Shakespeare has been adapted on film, TV, and video, and investigates the impact of this popularization on the canonical status of Shakespeare. The focus is not on how faithful or how adequate various celluloid renditions represent the texts. Instead, the essays explore the transformation of Shakespeare by a newly technologized culture, from cultural icon to pop culture product, and open up a range of questions about spectatorship, originality, the appropriations of popular culture, and pedagogy.
Also discussed is the recent trend of British-led adaptions wholly financed by American money, and the implications of adaptions fraught with American anxieties and ideological formations.
With examples ranging from BBC productions to full-screen adaptions by Kenneth Branagh and Zeffirelli, this impressive volume offers a fresh look at Shakespeare's role in contemporary media.
Customer Reviews:
FIRST-RATE COLLECTION ON SHAKESPEARE AND FILM.......2000-05-28
THIS IS A LANDMARK COLLECTION OF BRILLIANTLY WRITTEN ESSAYS ON A VARIETY OF FILMED ADAPTATIONS OF SHAKESPEARE'S PLAYS, INCLUDING THE RECENT HENRY V AND RICHARD III. IT IS ALREADY A LANDMARK IN THE FIELD AND HAS BECOME THE MOST WIDELY CITED BOOK ON SHAKESPEARE AND FILM. I HAVE ASSIGNED FOR SEVERAL COLLEGE COURSES. STUDENTS HAVE FOUND IT AN INVALUABLE RESOURCE. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. READERS OF THIS BOOK WILL ALSO WANT TO HAVE A LOOK AT BURT'S EXCELLENT BOOK, UNSPEAKABLE SHAXXXSPEARES.
Awesome Criticism!.......2000-01-06
This is a fantastic coleciton ranging across a wide variety of Shakespeare films. If you are dumb enough to think that "gender" is not a verb (as in "to gender") and a noun as well as think that "verb" is a verb and a noun (as in "to verb"), this book will probably disappoint you. But if you have a good sense of the grammar of the English language, you'll love this book.
Interesting but flawed.......1998-04-01
A close look at its title will reveal the kind of cultural synthesis "Shakespeare: the Movie" aims at: it is a book of essays about movie and TV adaptations of plays written by Shakespeare. Seems like a fascinating subject - after all, there is a constant cross-fertilization between movies and plays: Dustin Hoffman in "Death of a Salesman," or "The Lion King, Broadway Musical." (Although, as one essay claims in passing, "The Lion King does have a distinct flavor of Hamlet.") And Shakespeare drew many of his plots from old folk tales - so you can toss oral tradition into the pot. What would it mean to write a review of one of these hybrids? How much importance must you place on faithfulness to the original, and how much on a successful adaptation to the new form? The set of questions suggested by those three words might be the most concise moment in the book. Because unfortunately, when I turned the page, I was faced with the most sour stew of turgid prose that academia can produce. Favorite words include "narration," "discourse", "cultural," "explicitly," and "contextualization," for these words can usually be added to any phrase you want, so the sentence can march down the margin until it's half a page long, while saying very little. Mobile phones and intercoms, writes Richard Burt, "formulate the mediating power of Los Angeles as the contemporary site where high/low distinctions are engaged in endlessly resignifying themselves." The word "gender" is frequently verbed... A couple of essays, like "Shakespeare Wallah," offered a genuinely new take (and fresh language), but on the whole the book was all over the place and lacked coherence.
Book Description
Following on from the phenomenally successful Shakespeare, the Movie, this volume brings together an invaluable new collection of essays on cinematic Shakespeare's in the 1990s and beyond.
Shakespeare, the Movie II:
*focuses for the first time on the impact of post-colonialism, globalization and digital film on recent adaptations of Shakespeare
*takes in not only US and UK films but adaptations of Shakespeare in Europe and the Asian Diaspora
*explores a wide range of film, television, video and DVD adaptations, from Almereyda's Hamlet to animated tales, via Baz Luhrmann, Kenneth Branagh 1990s Macbeth, to name but a few
*offers fresh insight into the issues surrounding Shakespeare on film, such as the interplay between originals and adaptations, the appropriations of popular culture, questions of spectatorship, and the impact of popularization on the canonical status of 'the Bard'.
*Combining three key essays from the earlier collection with exciting new work from leading contributors, Shakespeare the Movie II offers sixteen fascinating essays. It is quite simply a must-read for any student of Shakespeare, film, media or cultural studies.

Wonderful annecdotes and pictures about Ravel by those who knew him.......2006-01-16
If you want to know more about Ravel as a person, this collection of anecdotes from those who actually knew him is quite interesting and valuable (and available used at a great price). The book begins with a chronology of events in Ravel's life (and major world events along the way so the reader can coordinate where Ravel's life fits in). There are then fourteen chapters on various topics such as Ravel's youth, on composing, about various works, as a teacher, a performer, as a friend, and his last years. The stories sometimes seem to conflict so you have to take them for what they are worth.
There are also many very interesting photographs of those whose stories are included as well as those of the composer alone and with his contemporaries. Ravel was a very private man and this book can help us get to know him a bit. While his music really stands on its own apart from Ravel's biography (as does the music of all great composers), we always want to know more about the composer, performer, writer, and so forth. It really says more about us than the artist or the nature of art, but it is a constant and continuing desire of those of us who receive the art.
So, this book provides us with what we want to know and we find it fascinating. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Excelent!.......2007-02-24
I highly recommend this book. It is so practical and will give you everything you need to get started in the consulting world, except for your experience. It is a book you will use as a reference tool again and again.
Should have consulted some aspiring consultants first.......2005-11-10
What a disappointment. After a successful 30 year career, I needed advice on how to start working for myself. I already know my field, potential customers, how to set deadlines, do the work, be organized, and what services I can sell. What I don't know is anything about working for myself, out from under the umbrella of a large corporation. What do I need to know re taxes, licenses, permits, assets, depreciation. How to incorporate, anticipate and bill for incidental expenses, anticipate other legal and business needs. Note that it is already 8 years old. Books on business have a very limited life. If you are just dreaming of what it would take to be a consultant, then buy this book. Maybe you will find the authors tips and recommendations very profound. If you are already there, don't buy this book thinking it will answer any of your immediate questions on the mechanics of consulting -- it won't.
What else did you expect?.......2004-01-27
I've run into some rather useful book in the series "For Dummies" but this book almost does honor to its name! And, honestly, what could you expect from Bob Nelson, the author of the "1001 Ways..." series of books? This book is not terrible, actually, but it really doesn't go into much depth. There are better titles to assist you in your pursuit of a self-employed career in consulting (just a simple search of the term "consulting" in Amazon will list a host of them), if you want to go beyond a casual reading sitting at a Barnes and Noble or Border's store, which is what I did with this title, to draw the conclusion that I now share with you. Beginning consultants of the world: consult elsewhere is my piece of advice!
Not a Bad Place to Start ..........2003-05-21
As an experienced consultant, I was surprised to find the amount of useful information in this book that I did. As a "...For Dummies" book, I expected that the information would be too basic for anyone with any real experience. Certainly, the book is geared toward beginners; however, I felt that the initial client interview checklist, suggestions for creating an implemenation plan, post-implementation impact study, and information on interim and final reports were really solid (although they could/should all be addressed in more detail). My one real complaint about this book is the lack of any meaningful discussion on proposals. All professionals new to consulting should know that proposals are an important marketing tool. Sure, there are a lot of consultants who avoid writing them, but the purpose of the proposal is not only to market the current project but A CHAIN OF PROJECTS. Proposals don't have to be overly complex. In fact, 65-85% of the material can be standard boilerplate. However, when you are long gone and your presentation is all but forgotten, your proposal and final reports will likely still be around. Believe me, the proposal is a powerful marketing device (if done correctly). Unfortunately, this book provides zero insight into how to craft a winning proposal. Otherwise, this is a good little guide for new consultants. However, two far better choices would be Alan Weiss' "Million Dollar Consulting" and/or his "Getting Started in Consulting." Overall grade: B/B+
Good for starters, but states the obvious.......2002-11-13
I bought this book because I was planning on going into consulting and read many good reviews only to be disappointed. I agree with fsb102 in that it states the obvious, things that common sense will tell you. For example: be organized, referrals are key, have prepared letters, be professional. Even what to include in the letters is basic.
However, I do see how this can help someone completely new to business or consulting, especially someone that hasn't gone to college. It gives a basic understanding of what consulting is about.
